City BBQ is one of my go to places when I dont want to cook. I feel their BBq is decent. Quite frankly their chicken is great and they will do without sauce if you ask them to. The place reminds me of a country cabin as the walls are done in pine (shiplap?) planking. Service once was excellent here but now Id say its fallen a bit. The Hamilton road crew is much better. Today we stopped by for pickles and a free cobbler. I belong to their rewards program and every once in a while they give members a freebie: ie- a free cobbler or cake. We ordered a party pack for a graduation celebration we were having for our kids. We asked for paper products to be delivered and never received them therefore not being able to eat our meal because we were staying at a hotel. Our order arrived at 3:30 and at 5 PM the paper products arrived. The restaurant gave us a five dollar gift card in response to our dissatisfaction. It is ironic that I'm reviewing a BBQ place, since I'm vegetarian. But I think it's important for me to chime in here. My manager sometimes orders City BBQ for our team and our customers and each time, everyone appears to love their food. My manager checked with me this past time to be sure I'd have enough to eat. He sent me a list of all the "sides" that he'd be ordering to go along with the different meats. I had plenty of options! We had a party salad, corn pudding (it's better than the name makes it sound), macaroni and cheese, and creamy slaw. I was quite pleased with each of these dishes and made a full meal of it. In fact, I filled my plate twice. I see on their menu that there are other sides that don't include meat that I would absolutely try. This past experience made me think that it wouldn't be ridiculous for me to stop in and actually order food there, since I enjoy their sides so much. I thought the vegetarians should know: This place isn't just for carnivores. All around consistently good food. And the carnivores seem to like it too! read more

This place is solid. City BBQ is your usual BBQ type of place - you order a lot of meat, get some sides, find a table, get some sauce, and stuff your face. This place delivers on all levels. The brisket and pulled pork were really nice - voluminous, perfectly spiced, and just darn tasty. The pulled pork was a hair dry as is usually the case, but the sauce fixed that up easy. The sides, such as the cornbread, were equally delicious. There's apparently an app for this place that offers some sort of first time customer discount - I'd check that out before coming, if only for the discount. read more

LESS AND LESS MEAT. they have a sandwich called "more cowbell". we order the brisket version. they are putting less and less meat on these and the meat quality is going down also. i specifically ask for "lean, no bark" on the cow bell sandwich which i was told meant lean with no burned ends. the cashier repeated it back to me so i know he heard it. non only was that request completely disregarded there was barely any meat on the sandwich. what little meat there was was burned. we live only a few blocks from this location and we order there a lot but I'm getting sick of this poor service. read more

Here we go, a Texas boy eating at a BBQ joint in Ohio. Being a Texas BBQ aficionado, I walked in with lowered expectations and a hint of snobbery and was promptly put in my place. This BBQ is really good! I had a sliced beef brisket sandwich, brisket chili and potato salad. There were quite a few sauces to choose from and I picked the original which as close to my own recipe. The brisket had a nice smoke ring and had just the right amount smoke taste. The brisket chili was especially delicious with layers of taste with just the right amount of heat. Immediately walking in to this City Barbeque location I was struck with the uncleanliness of the restaurant and the lack of proper procedures during the pandemic. Not one employee was wearing their mask properly, or at all. It made me feel very uncomfortable throughout my meal while dining in. The food of course was good. City Barbeque does a good job with their smoked meats. I tried something new on this visit, I went with a smoked turkey sandwich and it was good. The meat was not dry, and it was a delicious smoke flavor. Everyone in our group seemed to be happy with their lunch. Placed an online order with about $80 worth of food. They said 20-25 minutes and it's not far from my home so I got there right when it was up. Grabbed my bad and went to the counter because I had noticed the bbq sauce wasn't self serve anymore so I kindly asked for some for my order. The girl at the counter was EXTREMELY rude "Well I bagged the food and it's in the bag didn't you look." The bags are stapled closed so I hadn't and I asked her for a few more because I didn't want to have to drive all the way back if it wasn't in the bag. "I can only give you a few." That was fine but for $80 worth of food I need more than two and I would happily have paid for more. Service was just abysmal which is sad because I eat here a lot. Stopped in on another craving for BBQ and was pleasantly surprised to find that they have a special lunch sized sandwich -- perfect for me because I don't eat a lot! It was about $1.50-2 cheaper than the normal size and still a substantial sandwich. You can also add two sides for $3.50. I got the pulled pork again -- absolutely amazing again. Their sauce display looms updated since the last time I was in with a few new options. Definitely necessary to add for some extra moisture. As for the sides, I found the green beans to be way over seasoned (super salty and pepper-y), but the mac and cheese was spot on. My partner got the vinegar slaw and omg I could eat a pint of that stuff. Very yummy. Staff was very friendly and the restaurant was clean. We both ate, pants unbuttoned, for $20! While in Columbus, I stopped by on a Friday afternoon. Well, it was so good, I made it my breakfast on Saturday morning. I really wanted to stop again before we left on Sunday but I was afraid that my husband would divorce me & leave me in Columbus. My favorites were the brisket & ribs. For dessert, I got the banana pudding. While in line, I noticed that there were only 3 of the puddings left & decided that it must be pretty good, and it was. I was looking at the pictures on the wall and asked one of the employees about what I was looking at. Tonight the wife and I had a hankerin' for some BBQ so we headed over to City BBQ in Gahanna for dinner. We've been in a rut of ordering their beef brisket sandwiches for quite a while so we knew what we were planning to get; their brisket is hit or miss -- sometimes it's nice and most while other times it's dry. While waiting in line to place our order we overheard the guy in front of us ordering a half chicken and three ribs. Hmm, ribs. We both quickly decided to break our norm and settled on splitting a full rack of ribs. Let me tell ya', that was a great move! The ribs were well cooked and had a nice bark on them. There was just enough fat cap on them to keep them moist while cooking but not so much that you get a mouthful of yuck when you bite into them. The full slab of ribs, two side orders of corn pudding (yum), and two drinks found our bill to be $33.54 including tax. We both agreed ribs is going to be our new norm for a while. This is my favorite BBQ place in Columbus, the rib and beef brisk are juicy and tender, so does the half chicken, these are the top three choices that I would pick here for dinner or lunch, wish they have the 3 meat choice rather than the pick 2. Surely I've reviewed this already. No? Slipped under my radar, or deleted by Yelp? Oh, well. This is the closest City to me, and so I've been a few times. Though our fair city has better barbecue now, City is still a local favorite, and has expanded quite a bit from one location to, I think, twenty or so. In the process it has become more corporate, of course, but they try to retain the "homey" touches. This one was part of the first wave of expansion, I believe, and still seems new but is maybe 10 years old now. Walk in, and it has a rustic feel. The menu is much bigger than it used to be. This location is pretty big inside, too, and can get very busy. I've had everything here, but let's see, our last visit involved a jug of sweet tea (not at all sweet, so probably mislabeled.) When it's sweet, it's a good deal. The previous visit, I tried the brisket "taqos." Pretty good, surprisingly (I am skeptical when places step outside their specialty.) Before that, we usually had the ribs for me, brisket for Sweetie. Their meats are "good not great," the sides are usually very good. Get a platter, and try all the sauces at the table. Have some greens and corn pudding. Oh, and get some banana pudding. Service has always been great. Prices are reasonable. I'm sure we'll be back. read more
