That was the worst bbq I've had in a long long time. I asked for moist wet brisket. It was like shoe leather. The ribs were cold and all sauced and nothing else. Could not taste any smoke on the sausage. I did go back and asked for wet brisket. The guy cut off some fat and put it on my plate. I asked the cashier what type of bbq is this place. this place used to be a 5 star, but no longer, but I will say the meat is still very good. But they used to have delicious hand cut fries (just a few weeks ago) that were very similar to those at 5 guys. They no longer serve those. I was just served very basic, Applebees level restaraunt fries, that are no where near the quality of what they used to serve. I will not be recommending this place anymore and likely not coming here anymore if they don't change this recipe back to their old fries, which was a great reason to come here as they complimented the meat well. My husband and I waited in line for at least five minutes before anyone waited on us - there was nobody else in line at the City Barbeque on Harrodsburg Road in Lexington. While waiting, we even looked up the closest City Barbeque because no one even acknowledged us as we were waiting (e although there were employees close by). We should have followed our instinct because the brisket that we received was incredibly fatty and dry. It was so tough I couldn't even bite through it. I highly recommend the More Cowbell -- beef brisket, sautéed onions and peppers, provolone cheese and onion straws on a toasted texas toast bun. I do not like to give a negative review to any business in Lexington. I am such a champion of our businesses, especially amid labor shortages and Covid economic recovery -- HOWEVER, as a Yelp Elite member and reviewer, I would NEVER give less than an honest review to those that count on Yelp to assist in their choices. That's because I also use Yelp to help make my decisions. So here is my experience this evening with this business. I have never in my life had worse barbecue. My husband even asked if I thought that maybe they saved the worst parts for their carry out orders. I don't know the answer to that but we ordered 25.00 in food plus tip and it was basically inedible. I kid you not... the brisket (which is usually one of my favs) was slimy, fatty, inedible ... I don't have one positive thing to say about it. It was terrible. I ate my baked beans and took a couple bites of the potato salad which is never anything to write home about - but what was supposed to be our dinner... we had to throw out completely. Makes me shudder thinking of how it looked even. I wasted 25.00 of our hard earned dollars tonight and will still have to cook because of this atrocity they sent to me. And sadly, this is not the first time... I should have learned my lesson. This is one of my favorite barbecue places in Lexington. The staff is always friendly and always allows us to sample anything on the menu. I usually order the brisket when I go unless they run out, which is a real possibility. The restaurant has an app that will give you $5 off your first meal. My son and I ordered the sampler to share and we were both full with food to take home. We ordered the fries and baked beans as a side and they are always great. Only disappointing menu item is the macaroni and cheese. I would suggest they tweek the recipe because it's bland and tasteless. Overall, great experience and would recommend this place to everyone. read more

I tend to go to this City BBq more because it is located inside the circle, however I like the Richmond road location slightly better. It seems I have visited this location and I have taken issue with the quality of the iced tea. The tea machines have been crusty and covered in film which in turn causes the tea to taste odd. The BBQ is tasty. I love the bark on the brisket. And the swine wine is perfect for the pulled pork and the sliced turkey and the brisket and to dip your bread in... The fries are hand cut. The corn pudding is my favorite non-fry sides. Overall, I will be back. The tea situation concerns me but won't stop me from coming back. read more

The Mother Load... if there is one meal in Lexington worth the money, it's The. Mother. Load. I mean, I've had practically everything at City Barbeque there is, and that's my go to order. $59.99 may seem like a big price tag, but it can literally feed at least five people. Honestly, I probably never would've taken the plunge to order it, but I won it on Facebook and I've ordered it several times since then. Six side of your choice, turkey, chicken, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and my favorite, the sausage. Oh yeah, and Texas Toast and corn bread. My dad compares it to the Brazil grill, with so many meat options, and soooo much food to choose from. He's been to both Brazilian restaurants in Lexington and he prefers the Mother Load. And five people can eat on it for about the same price as you pay at the other two. Yes, I did compare BBQ to Brazilian. This is one of the two Lexington CB locations. I must admit, they're not a locally based company, but they were one of the first BBQ joints in Lexington, many of the other local ones came afterwards. This one came straight out of Kansas City, so the bar was set high. I think as with every BBQ joint, you have to know what you want and how to request any special preferences. For example, my husband prefers his brisket with no fat. He always requests for his to be without fat and they always fulfill his request. Some people prefer marbled or fattier brisket, so to each his own... they got it all. The sauce a condiment bar here is the best in Lexington. I'm a bit of a pickle freak, so maybe that's what does it for me. But they also have to-go container, so you can fill them up with pickles or sauces to go. read more

The food at this location is about a 70/20 hit/miss proposition. As someone who's father used to own BBQ joints, I have spent many an hour fixing sides, cutting pork butts, cooking ribs, etc. I am not an expert by any means but have enough of a background to provide some informed criticism. My two big gripes are 1) freshness of the sides and 2) lack of proper trimming/cutting of the meats. On recent visits the sides have been extremely dry. The brunswick stew had 0 liquid...more of a thick paste. The rice in the red beans and rice was crunchy. The corn pudding was completely dried out. Easy fix: All were simply heated for too long. A little quality control from the kitchen staff and management oversight and this could easily be prevented. On last visit I took the stew back up and the manager agreed it should never have been sent out as dry as it was. As to the trimming and quality control of the meats, two visits ago my youngest ordered a pork sandwich. What came on her bun was a mix of big chunks of fat and burned pork (the equivalent of "burnt ends" when you specifically order your beef brisket that way). Again, the manager agreed it should not have sent out as-is and comped us a portion of our meal. And, this was not the first time this has occurred. As I mentioned, quality and the food here is good about 70% of the time. It's that other 30%, and how easily avoidable it is, that's frustrating. I'll continue to go as, when it's good, it's very good but I'll also continue to be vigilant and check my food at the counter before I take it to the table. read more

We've been visiting City BBQ since it opened in this location and have never been disappointed; their brisket is heavenly, their portion sizes ample, and their menu selection more than adequate. If you've never tried their "More Cowbell" sandwich, put it on your bucket list. But probably the best part about City BBQ is the catering options & buying carryout bulk meats. We often order brisket or smoke turkey by the pound and freeze it, pulling it out on those nights when we don't feel like cooking. And if you cater a work lunch with all the fixings, expect some happy employees because everybody loves a good brisket and their mac & cheese will put you in a food coma. City has my favorite smoked turkey in town. Always thick and very moist. I rotate between the Smoked Turkey salad and the Smoked Turkey dinner with sides. They complicated my life this Fall though by introducing Brunswick Stew, which I absolutely love!
