Decor at the Richmond Road location we frequent in Lexington, KY supports their food offering perfectly, and I enjoy the self-serve free choice pickles, onions, peppers, sauces, and drinks format. My family likes individual items including pulled pork, brisket, turkey, chicken, and sausage, so we normally migrate toward their Judge's and City Samplers which offers most of those meat items with tasty sides. We took on a huge sampler recently called The Motherload which was delicious and impressively large. Prices are slightly higher than fast food, but we always feel it's a good value for what's offered. Best BBQ in Lexington! Barbecue sauces are delicious and meat is always cooked to perfection. A little pricey for our family of 6 but that's probably because we order 3 half chickens and a few sides. My kids tear up the chicken here and seeing them eat well makes the money spent worth it. This is a perfect post workout meal! Love BBQ and found this place on an overnight stay in Lexington. The ribs were well smoked but somewhat dry. I like to bite them off the bone but these were just a little too barky for us. Coleslaw was tops! Would stop again, but will pass on the ribs and give something else a try. read more

I really have a hard time believing I've never actually reviewed this location... I must have been here at least 10 times by now. I really have to say, there may be some better local BBQ (Lyle's, Willie's, Blue Door), but for a chain restaurant this place will do in a pinch. Their meats are always tasty and smokey (even our picky 15 month old will eat it!) the sides are excellent. I'm particularly a fan of their smoked sausage, which when nestled on some Texas toast with some of their slaw is just fire. I also really appreciate their desire to improve themselves. Upon my last visit, I noticed they had some new sauces (definitely try the Spicy Ginger!) and has changed the sides container from a small bowl to a paper cup (which makes cleanup or doggie bags way easier). My wife has also really enjoyed their new sandwich offerings (the More Cowbell and the Firecracker). Keep up the good work, City. We will keep visiting. read more

I was really disappointed with city bbq. We have had it three times in the past two years and even though it has never been stellar last night was the worst. My fried pickles were swimming in oil, it looked like they were taken out of the oil and dumped right in there with no draining. In the 5 mins it took me to drive home the oil had soaked through and had started dripping from the to go bag onto my backseat. I tried to salvage them with no luck. The fries weren't as bad but still soggy from the lack of draining properly and the way they are packaged. The brisket and turkey were dry and you could not taste that they had been smoked. Its more liked baked meats, not smoked meats. I will say the pulled pork and cukes and onions were good and the only part of the meal we liked. read more

I've ate at CB about 4-5 times, and I have to say, they have the best smoked turkey breast I've ever put in my mouth. It's tender & moist, done just right. I think a lot of people go straight for the brisket or pork, (which doesn't disappoint) and overlook the turkey breast, but believe me when I say the turkey is fantastic! I've also had the brisket and pork bbq which are also excellent. The Mo' Cowbell sandwich is just out of this world and it's BIG, I could only eat half & took the other half home with me. I've also had the Lou Lou sandwich (I think that's the name) and it is really good, if you like a more vinegar based flavor (as I do) because the meat is marinated in "swine wine". As far as sides, they have wonderful corn pudding, It's always been piping hot & different from other corn puddings I've tried, it's like it almost 'crispy' on top. The french fries are good, and they give you A LOT of fries. The Mac n' Cheese has a great flavor, too. Now for the reason I took off a star is for food temperature. The meat's temps are not a concern, they're always warm/hot, BUT the sides can be on the cold side sometimes. Both the fries & Mac & cheese have been cold. The last time we were there, all of our fries were cold. I also have to say, I don't care for the layout of where & how you order your food. I just feel rushed to order, and there's no space to wait, read the menu and decide what you want to eat. It's not a dealbreaker, though. I advise you to look at the online menu & decide before going in. But CB is an overall great place to eat. You should definitely give it a try. read more

My favorite bbq place. Outside of my hometown, Owensboro that is. I like the pulled pork the Best ,but my husband loves the fall apart brisket. Delicious BBQ!! On a long road trip in the way home from vacation and was really craving some BBQ. Found this place that wasn't too far off the highway (about 4 miles). Pretty quick service so didn't have to wait long to eat, which was good cause I was pretty hungry! I had the pulled pork and it was so tender and really good. My dad had the brisket which was also very tender and tasty. The fries and baked beans were delicious sides as well. Had the green beans but they weren't that great. I used city bbq for a class catered event and it was delicious! I got family packs and did a quick set up myself to reduce cost and ended up with loads of left overs we fed to support staff. My husband travels a lot for his work and he thinks City BBQ is the best BBQ he's had in the country. And yes, he's had BBQ in Kansas City and Oklahoma. He used to bring it down to Lexington from Ohio before they opened one here in Lexington. His favorite is the Brisket but my favorite is the pulled chicken. I'm more of a poultry gal anyway. My go to meal here is the Pulled Chicken sandwich, made with the Texas Toast. And my favorite side is the corn pudding. Every once in a while, it comes out a bit dry but I think it must be an outer edge piece but those middle sections... Oh Em Gee, SO GOOD! I also love the bottle ginger ale that has real ginger pieces in it and made with cane sugar. That's really good. However, I'm deducting a star because their parking situation is so bad. They really need assign 2 parking spots for people who have called ahead and are picking up their order. If they did that, I think we'd do carry out a lot more. This place did not smell like bbq. We got a rib plate and a sampler. the meats were so dry and salty we could not eat them. The poultry was more edible in that poultry is better salty. We were wondering ifthis was precooked and rewarmed meat probably like Sonny's. We are giving one star because the manager immediately refunded us for the inedible ribs. BOTTOM LINE - 3.85 Star BBQ - 5 Star Business. Go there with your Mom and Dad and enjoy each other. Everybody has their own favorite BBQ styles and flavors. Some people have been to America's finest BBQ Mecca's and found the food to be just okay..while others LOVE them some 'Q that I might think was awful. City Barbeque openly states that they wanted to bring all the best American BBQ styles to the people...that's usually a recipe for mediocre food. But in City Barbeque's case, it worked out to be good for all of us. Is the brisket as good as it would be if they focused on it? No. But it's pretty darn good. Do I wish that the spare ribs included the rib tip? (their ribs are St. Louis trimmed to be uniform and more the size of baby backs) Yes. Are the sauces kinda spiced and flavored to be mid-palate? And are there much better sauces to use..Yes.. But they're plenty good enough to enjoy. In fact everything at City Barbeque is good enough to want to go there because - and here's the kicker - City Barbeque is an excellent business. Their people are smiley and well trained. .you can get a cold beer or pop going before you even order..and..well, everything about it is designed and executed to be friendly, clean, effecient and joyful. I had a half slab of ribs, baked beans w brisket bits, and some potato salad...The ribs had a lot of smoke on them and were more done than I like - but were very tasty. The potato salad was better than okay.. in slices with mayo and not too much else, but those meaty little beans with the bits of brisket? Yummm. They have a lot of sides..I saw some very good looking green beans and french fries....the mac and cheese looked a little soft ...I'd like to try them all though..and their sausage too. The only real bummer was everything being served w Texas toast. Everyone knows that really good BBQ comes with white bread so you can make potato salad or baked bean sandies after your meat's gone and Texas toast isn't even a thing ..very few things that have a city or state in their name are popular in the named city or state...anywhoo...I really liked eating and being at City BBQ. I eat at this restaurant almost daily and have enjoyed close to everything on the menu. But today must have just been a bad day for them. I stopped on my way to work to get food. There were no straws at all for drinks, the lemons were soaking in water & mushy. I ordered a smoked sausage on Texas toast & it was literally cold on the inside 20 minutes after I purchased the meal. I heated it up, but just didn't taste the same. I love the food here. This is not a cheap place to eat. One person could easily spend $20 on their meal. I highly recommend the smoked chicken and turkey. I did not like the smoked sausage. I stopped in with my main girl today for a late lunch. Tried the Brisket sandwich with 2 sides, baked beans with brisket and the corn pudding. First thing I noticed were the thick cuts of brisket just hanging out the sides and it was piled high. It was love at first bite. No gobs of fat hanging on to the lightly smoked tender beef. I personally prefer more smoke but when catering to as many people as they must it was on the mark. Delicious stuff here. Corn pudding was cooked to perfection with a slight hint of sweetness.
