This was my second choice as my first had sold out (by 6 pm). The chicken was extremely moist; however, it wasn't falling off the bone cooked (ergo loss of one star), and the ribs fell off the bone (well, they fell with a little encouragement). As expected, the meal required a large quantity of paper towels for cleanup. As far as sides, I had the corn pudding, and found it tasty, if not a tad more money than I expected (another ding). Ditto for the fries that my wife ordered. If I am in the area, I will probably eat here again. read more

This place is great. You have to love the smell of smoke in a BBQ joint. Their 2 Southern Pride smokers produce a great product. I got the Sample Plate for $15 with two sides and a drink. I left feeling very full. You won't regret eating here. The only gripe I have is the location. But I guess that depends on where you live... read more

The people who work at this establishment are wonderful! There are no waiters at CIty Barbeque, but the team of employees still came to check on us at our table multiple times to ensure that our visit was a pleasant one. My wife sent me to City Barbeque (IUPUI location) to pick up a carry-out order for a birthday party for my daughter. It wasn't a huge order but it was the first time we have placed an order for 10+ people in advance. The process to place the order was quick and easy. When I arrived at the location, Donny assisted me with the carryout order that my wife had placed. He was very prompt and remarkably thorough as he confirmed that my order was correct. He was friendly and helpful, which put me at ease. He made sure I had everything that I would need to serve the pulled pork and brisket with the sides. He asked me if there was anything I would need further and seemed genuine about his concern for my being happy. He offered to help me carry the items to my vehicle, and although I declined, he still asked if I would like a drink to go. I said that that would be nice and he quickly got a drink for me and said he would bring it out to my vehicle while I loaded my items in. He was very cordial and I believe is the kind of person that any company would want working for them as I most certainly left feeling good about the experience. And it is worth noting that Donny was helpful and friendly despite the fact that I wasn't particularly friendly to him when I first interacted with him (due to being frustrated about something that had nothing to do with my order). Not to say I was rude or anything, I just didn't come in in a cheerful mood, but was met with this helpful and friendly person. He was very sincere and it made it a pleasant experience. Needless to say, I left the City Barbeque with a much better disposition due to how quick, easy, and friendly of an interaction I had. It truly made my day better. Then, I got home with everything I needed and the food was excellent! Although I didn't necessarily expect the good experience at the store, I did expect the bbq to be delicious. And I wasn't let down here. My grandfather even commented on how good it was and expressed interest in having it again. That is a big deal because, let me tell you, my grandfather is a tough sell and he doesn't compliment things frequently. So, overall, my experience was GREAT! I am thankful for the great service and we loved the food! I will definitely be a repeat customer and will certainly continue to be an outspoken advocate of City Barbeque! I seriously can't say enough good about this place. There's nothing bad on the menu. The brisket is probably my favorite. Hushpuppies and cheesy bacon fries are the best sides. And either the banana pudding or chocolate cake for dessert. City Barbeque is the real deal. You can see the smokers as you order. I literally eat at City 2 - 3 times a week. Nice dinner spot in Lexington. We had a sampler platter and it easily fed 2 adults, 1 teenager and 1 child. Dinner for under $30 total is awesome. 4 sauce choices which was perfect to allow for each of us to sauce or not to sauce to our whims. Definitely a place to visit again. So this is really a 3.5 star review. We came out here on a whim because we found an ancient coupon. The manager took the coupon and our order, but I got the distinct impression she would be happier if we just turned around and left. I have a pretty strong bias against KY BBQ; every place I've tried has been really underwhelming, and a poor imitation of the BBQ I've had elsewhere. I was actually really surprised by how good everything I had was! The pulled pork sandwich was huge, the corn pudding was exceptional, and even the fries were good. The BBQ sauce was pretty meh, but still better than others we've had around here. Since I had a coupon, I was unable to try the true test of any BBQ joint--ribs. I'll definitely come back, and if I can finally find some meaty, well cooked and well sauced ribs, I might change my mind about KY BBQ. read more

Very, very busy place, and it was well worth it. I do love barbecue, and this place does a very good job at it. I got the sampler, and there was nothing on my plate that wasn't very, very good. This may be a chain but it is the best BBQ around. The meat is tender and the portions are generous. The sides are really good as well. So many places serve corn pudding and it has a weird flavor that I can't explain but one bite and I'm finished. Not here. City's is like a side and a dessert. It's the only place I eat corn pudding. Others swear by Red State and it is an off the beaten path joint but the portions and sides are not comparable for the money or the taste. read more

I had been wanting to try this place ever since I saw it open a couple of months ago. It is fantastic. I'm something of a BBQ aficionado, and this place really hit the spot. We tried the City Sampler. At 15 bucks, the wife and I got 2 sides (mac n cheese and collards), smoked turkey, brisket, pull chicken, and pulled pork. The portions were very generous and the meats were very well smoked. The pork and brisket were probably my favorite, but all were great. The collards are also highly recommended. Best BBQ in Lexington! I know this is a chain restaurant out of Ohio of all places, but it really does have the best BBQ in town. Their cheese fries with bacon are incredible. Visiting from out of town and should have know better than to try BBQ this far north - (even if it is in Kentucky). The portions are generous enough, if you leave hungry it is your own fault. The pulled pork was ok, but lacked a really smoky flavor that I expected. The bun was a bit sweet - think Kings Hawaiian buns. The sauce was thick and was a bit sweet for my taste. I didn't try the mustard sauce because unless you are in South Carolina, that's not BBQ. I had a smoked sausage that was cooked correctly but could have used a better bun. The store looked fairly new and was clean. The decor smacked of trying hard to be an authentic down-home rib shack, but didn't pull it off. Service was good, but ordering system was confusing; I didn't ask what the process was, so it was not the servers fault. They were all friendly and helpful, and I could tell that I wasn't the first to not read the directions! The Smoked sausage was ok The Pulled pork was ok The Potato salad was ok Everything was ok but didn't live up to the visual appeal. I would wager that the original store had better food; like a lot of restaurants, something was lost in the franchise expansion. Still, it was fast, filling, and full of choices. Everyone was very helpful and efficient. I ordered on line and it was ready when I had requested. The cashier, Kayla, was nice enough to make sure my order would be part of the fund raiser even though I had paid on line. Great bbq. Had the pulled chicken with greens and baked beans as my sides. All great. Loved the warm bbq sauce. I normally put vinegar on my greens but they didn't need any. Talk about some of the most bland, boring, and pedestrian food. Nothing about City BBQ says BBQ at all. Sides are obviously straight out if the Sysco can, with the exception of the corn pudding, there is nothing worth stopping here for. I really don't get all the rave reviews about this place. Awesome! The place was pretty busy, but they kept everything flowing. My husband does not like coleslaw, but he ordered the North Carolina pulled pork sandwich with slaw and loved it...even ate all of the coleslaw! A friend had recommended the smoked turkey, so I had it...very good. The baked beans have brisket in them and are thick and flavorful. I liked the corn pudding, though it was a little overdone. Potato salad is best I've ordered in a restaurant in Lexington. Can't wait to go back...mmmm read more

My family went about a month ago. The food was room temperature and we had zero service in the dining area. That's not what I expect for a BBQ place that charges so much! I'm not into chain BBQ restaurants, but this place was a pleasant surprise. Walking in and smelling the smokiness, you could tell this place was the real deal. We carried out 2 lbs of beef brisket and a rack of ribs with five sides - green beans, slaw, mac-n-cheese, corn pudding, and potato salad. You go to a barbeque place for the meat, and everything else is secondary. That's exactly City Barbeque. Meat was outstanding - exactly what I'd expect from a great BBQ joint. The sides were solid but unspectacular. Whole wheat buns and Texas Toast were nothing to write home about. Kudos to the cashier, who was flexible in our "Pig Up 'N Go Pack" and allowed us to get four pint-sized sides instead of two quart-sized for the same price. I plan to go back and try their other meat offerings, and I expect it'll be just as good as this meal. read more

Great food, great service! Fantastic selection of sauces for the different meats, mostly the typical tomato-molassus based types, but also a really great mustard based sauce and a vinegar "mop". The meats are great, but lack a strong smoky flavor. Definitely worth stopping by for a meal. read more
