Went in to have two squeaky disc brakes repaired. Guy said it would be better to replace the…read moreoriginals, as repairing them would not be safe. He quoted $110 for both. He replaced the front brake with really cheap, low-quality parts. When I caught him trying to replace the rear brake with a used part, I told him to reassemble the brake; I would take it to another shop. He then tried to charge me $110 for one brake when the original quote was for both brakes. I insisted he replace the front brake with the original parts when some guy walked in claiming to be the manager; he got in my face, literally inches away, starting screaming at me to get the f--- out or he'd mess me up. Liberty used to a great neighborhood shop, but the new owners are a total rip-off. I wound up bringing the bike to NYC Bike & Scooter, where they replaced the brake pads for $40 and the bike's as good as new ! Avoid Liberty like the plague !!

TLDR: asked for a simple tire tube replacement, left with damaged carbon rims…read more I usually do my repairs myself, but didn't have any tools today, so I figured a tire tube replacement is a pretty dead simple job that any bike shop can handle. I walked into Enoch's shop last week, and he quoted me $15 and 10 minutes, and I said sure. As the service continued, I became progressively more apprehensive, but was too polite to tell him "Sorry, I don't trust you anymore. Can we stop?" 1. He clamped my titanium bike on the seattube. One should always clamp on the seatpost, so if any crush damage occurs, it would be easily replaceable. Luckily there was no damage here, but he would have crushed a carbon fiber frame. 2. Unluckily for me, I have carbon fiber wheels. He used a steel vise grip to pull the tire off the rim... I've never had to use anything other than plastic tire levers to get my tire off. This caused dent damage on my flawless carbon rim, as you can see in the attached photo (I did not know this damage occurred until after I already left the shop). I do not know if the damage is just cosmetic or structural, and I will need to contact the manufacturer. 3. When he reattached the wheel to the bicycle, he rested the chain not on the cog, but past the cog on the rear axle, then stretched my rear triangle to handle the extra width, then tightened it down (this I also did not realize until after I had left). This is basic, and so obvious. If he had simply turned the pedal at all, he would see that it's not driving the wheel... When I discovered this, I ran home to get my multitool to relieve the tension on my frame and set it properly. Luckily this does not seem to be permanent damage, as the back wheel still seems aligned properly. If I had a carbon frame, he would have snapped it. At the end he said "I'll need to charge you more, $20, because this took a long time and was very hard". So I came in for a tire tube repair, and left with potentially hundreds of dollars in damage (still awaiting manufacturer reply if the rim is unsafe to ride or not). I made a mistake of bringing something nice here, don't make the same mistake yourself.

I've spent 3.7k on a bike, this isn't including the repairs i had to pay over the span of a year which amount to at least 1.4k+ after random bolts detaching and motor failing, and as soon as the warranty expired my bike had a random electrical issue where the bike wouldn't accelerate. From the owner Pete: OK, where are you going? (Direct email sent from owner) 1- Last Mile NYC replaces all of the electronics on your bike. The cost of the parts and labor is $2910.54 2- Send your bike back to Super73. They will do their own diagnosis, and determine the issues and fix the problems. Unfortunately your bike is not under warranty, the cost of packing up and freighting your bike to and from Super73 will be around $1200. Plus their diagnostic fee, parts and labor. BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I leave the shop again, and the back tire, just "fixed" is completely flat by the time I got home 5 blocks. I thought the shop was going to be OK, but I cannot recommend it. Plus, I have a completely flat back tire.

Same goes for Hilltop in Williamsburg (also owned by Specialized) - those guys treated me like I was a sale/noob and really couldn't have cared less about figuring out what was "right" for me given I wasn't going to be buying a bike from them. Nice guys, but once again - backed up for weeks on the service side of things. Back to Bicycle Habitat - Matt and the team were awesome. Took their time with me after a build and helped me get sorted with both shoes and clips - adjusted my bike a bit and really made sure I got some practice clipping in/out and that I was all set to go before walking out the door. All in all spent over an hour in the shop both chatting with the guys and getting set up with the new bike. I will 100000% be bringing any and all future bike needs to the shop and will be making it known to friends/fellow bikers that this is the place to go. In this city, I had begun to think that it was a mandate of bike shop employees to sport handlebar mustaches, retro glasses and skinny jeans. Well, this city has taught me that "All that glitters is not gold," and sometimes there are diamonds in the roughest little places: This shop, little more than a double-wide railroad apartment in size, is run by a professional cyclist and excellent frame builder (Solstice Cycles) in his own right, who is knowledgeable about bikes in the extreme, and is serious about finding the right fit for each of his customers. That doesn't mean that he sugar coats things - If you come in asking for a triathlon bike to run up and down the bike path from Chelsea Piers to 42nd street, he'll straighten you out, and rightly so! Bike shops are in the business of selling things, and oftentimes, they only really care about the sale, but not here. This shop has showed me that there is still at least one place in New York City that cares about bikes - Look at the clientele if you don't believe - Couriers, travelers on distance tours, and the daily commuter - All know the secret of this hidden gem, and keep coming back. This shop has been my go-to place for repairs and parts for my last two touring bikes: I had my vintage Raleigh Supercourse 12 speed from 1976 completely rebuilt here to perfection, and as soon as it's time for the midwinter cleaning for my Bianchi Volpe (I commute daily) I'll be back again. City Bikes keeps it real in New York City, come see for yourself. read more

Definitely an enthusiasts bike shop. This place is for cyclists not people who "ride bikes". The staff here is really helpful with any questions you have and you can tell they really want to expand the hobby of cycling to others. I highly recommend this place. Could not get out of there fast enough. Avoid this particular location but not all Trek stores (the one in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, is brilliant and has a lovely staff). I went two blocks to the legendary Bicycle Habitat on 7th and 23rd St and bought one twice as expensive as the one I had my eye on at Trek Chelsea. The service at Bicycle Habitat was beyond terrific.

I go for the Appointment. $21... ok. then I ask if I change the right side, will my brakes be perfect, and the repair says "yes", so now it's $42, except the right side STILL didn't work and he said, 'oh, you need a new balancer or some BS'. I can't recommend this store at all. the repair guy was so full of his own "expertise", and he let me riding around dangerously with NO brakes, when they're always doing nothing when I look in. He could have found 15 minutes for my safety, in 4 days, but he didn't and I didn't need a new brake cable on the right, he suckered me into it for no reason. Didn't fix anything.

If you are visiting NYC, or live nearby and are a bicycle enthusiast, I suggest you visit this clean, well stocked, fun decor store. It's wheelchair accessible too. My favorite part of this visit were the antique dogs by the check out counter! I'm sure they're not for sale.

As I turned to leave he said, well, what do you want to pay? I said I'm not haggling with you, not today--you either know the cost of labor and parts or you don't. I felt like he saw a woman crying and made an assumption about what my level of knowledge and how much I could pay. Not cool.

The wheel on my bike popped off 2x, the axel was bent. I lt was about a 10 minute walk from the rental place and it took them 45 minutes to come to me and bring me a replacement bike. It ruined our excursion so I asked for a refund due to the bike breaking 2x and the 45 minute wait. The guy at the rental stand said that I was lying about the bike breaking! And asked why my hands were not dirty if I tried to fix it!! Imagine that the bike breaks 2 x then totally ruined the experience and then instead of apologizing they accuse you of being a liar!!! You can't make this stuff up. They would not give any refund at all. These people basically did not provide the service and took my money. I'll be disputing the charge with my credit card because what they did is theft.
