Went for a ride with a flat tire so I came back and discussed with them what my bike needs. They gave me helpful feedback on the dimensions of my bike and what it needs. Eddie gave me a new inner tube and inner tape for $30. Hard to understand when they are charging you and there's no pricing or anything so when they tell you what it costs feels like they are pulling it out of thin air, but that's a service business. read more

I went into this shop with my bike immediately after being hit by a dirtbag on a motorized unicycle on the Hudson greenway. My front wheel was trashed, the rest of the bike was fine. I asked what it would cost to replace my front wheel and he quoted me $200. The place in my own neighborhood replaced my back wheel for $80 just a few months earlier, I knew the quote was ludicrous. I said sorry, no, I can't afford that and started to leave. I was shaken by the accident and crying a bit, but wasn't about make a bad day worse by letting this guy take advantage of me. As I turned to leave he said, well, what do you want to pay? I said I'm not haggling with you, not today--you either know the cost of labor and parts or you don't. I felt like he saw a woman crying and made an assumption about what my level of knowledge and how much I could pay. Not cool. read more

Traded in my old bike I bought online after fourth flat tire in a year. John picked out a bike for me within five minutes based on my height and my cycling needs. Not many great choices for tall women, but he customized my handle bar width to my arm span, set the right seat height making sure it was perfect for me. Avoid this place. Rude staff and a rip off. Brought a friend's bike to Eddie's Bicycles Shop on Amsterdam and 84th to have tires inflated and seat adjusted. The guy that worked there came out and said it's $12 for him to do anything. I asked if I can use the pump myself instead and he said that I need to buy an adaptor then walked away dismissively. So I left and went to Master Bike on 72nd (between WEA & B'way). They pumped the tires for free and helped adjust my seat. Go there instead and forget Eddie's. read more

Been a fan of Eddie's for decades but over the last couple of years their service has deteriorated incredibly. The last bike I rented from them (for a friend) had rusted components and was a very dangerous ride. I recently ordered a part from them and waited over a month... before was I told with a shrug... that it would not be arriving... ever. If I hadn't reached out to them for updates multiple times they never would have contacted me with this info. The tuneups used to be a wonderful deal but they are now the same price as the higher end bike shops on the UWS. Turn around time is slower now. And they told me that they only accept cash now. And due to a family emergency I had to pick a bike there a day later than when it was ready for pick up and as I was in the process of paying way too much for the minimal work that they did... I was scolded for being late. I know space is at premium in the city but treating your very loyal customers like this is a bad move. read more

They've fixed my flat tires many times, and are always so kind and if you have questions, the mechanic will actually work with you and examine your bike together. A true delight. Technician John is very knowledgeable and they are responsive. Prices are reasonable. While riding in Central Park, my friend got her chain totally jammed between the derailleur and spokes. We made a bunch of calls until finally we called Eddie's and they send John out to find us. He fixed it expertly and made sure it was safe to ride again. Came to the UWS hoping to go on a leisurely bike ride...but I don't own a bike, so I came here to rent one. Bike rentals are $7/hr, and you pay upon your return. I got a basket attached to mine for no extra charge, so that was nice too. The quality of the bikes seemed to be a bit off in my opinion. I learned how to ride a bike less than a year ago, and have been able to get the hang of biking on cruiser rentals pretty quickly after that. However, this time, I felt myself struggling to pedal quite frequently...and I also kept sliding on the saddle! It increased my discomfort because at times, my knees were too close to the handlebars, and I would lose my balance and come to a halt. Surely, I couldn't have gotten worse at bike riding?! I went to Riverside Park, and I was pretty terrified riding in the streets next to cars, as A) I had a hard time pedaling and B) I did not feel pro enough to ride next to cars. Anyway, while quality is meh, it's still $7/hr, which is a STEAL in NYC. read more

TERRIBLE customer service. Lady who owns the place may seem nice at first but trust me she couldn't care less about the paying customer. Purchased multiple overpriced items from store - $20 more then you can find on Amazon - wanted to build relationship because I just moved in around corner. Told them I would be bringing a bike in for a tune up in a few days. Bike was 99% assembled and just needed a tune up to be complete. Call to confirm appointment and lady tells me she wants $75 to do it... I tell here that price seems off for a tune up and she rudely says go somewhere else then and hangs up on me. Completely shocked my this behavior I call back asking what kind of business model is that were this is the way you treat a new customer. She then says she just told me the price and as I am middle of sentence responding I hear phone slam down and hang up again. Really!?! How pathetic. Terrible business from someone who would be shopping there all the time now will never go in again other then maybe to tell other people to go to the much nicer bike store around the corner. Real wonder how this place is still in business...looks like a huge mess and now I know the owner is a mess as well. read more

Let Eddie's touch your bike at your own risk. This place doesn't do proper bicycle maintenance or guarantee their work for even 48 hours. Paid $20 on Friday for them to install a basic (cheap) kickstand on my 5 year old's bike. It fell apart on the first ride; when we returned they made it seem like they would replace it for free, so we left the bike again. They installed a different type of kickstand and then told me it would be another $25 to get the bike back. When I questioned that they told me the screw was loose on the old one and part of it fell off, and that it was my problem. The screw was loose...on their installation of their product...and somehow I have to pay twice? And more the second time? I think it was probably a scam, installed improperly on purpose, and I fell for it. Buyer beware--don't give Eddie's Bicycles your money, go to one of the other proper bike shops in town, ten blocks north or south is worth it for peace of mind and safety whether you're buying a new bike, renting a bike, or need maintenance on your existing bike. read more

Small and a mess, but unpretentious and helpful. There's a free air pump easily accessibly outside, and they will let you borrow a stand pump inside for presta. I haven't had any service done here, but they have had the parts I needed. I recently went to replace bearings, and they really tried to up-sell me on a new crank and bb. I would consider a new bb if their price wasn't so high, but trying to sell me a new crank was over the top. read more

While the service is fast and the pricing good, the quality is sub-par. I had a tune-up, including brake adjustment, and also asked for my handlebars to be re-wrapped. Upon getting my bike back, the shifting was much improved but the brakes were terrible. The rear wheel would not even spin because the brake pad was rubbing on the rim. My new handle bar wrapping is very uneven with large bare spots. Overall, I would rather spend a little bit more to get better quality work done. read more

I went to Eddie's Bike Shop with a minor repair job. It was for a replacement of the saddle cable on the back brake and a replacement of a gasket on the front brake. They told me an hour. Mind you, the two part together are about $2 wholesale, no problem. I understand the mark-up for their business and labor costs. That's all fine, I'm all for supporting a small business. However, after the hour was over, the entire job cost $50 and they stopped short of replacing the front saddle brake cable that was worn and becoming undone. As the so-called professional, they could have seen the problem and made the minor repair and adjustment while they were on that job. Instead they did the very least and charge $50! I have to say, I will be doing my own repairs next time and buying all my parts off the Internet. They have lost a customer over a $1 part which they wanted to charge me $8 for. I looked up the part and i could buy 8-10 of those parts for that price. This job didn't take an hour to complete and could have been more professionally done, without the extreme overcharging. I would have been a returning customer, but this bad service is the reason I hate bike shops and now prefer to do the job myself at a tremendous cost savings. I went there because I needed the repair that day, but they only did the least amount of work and charged too much for a saddle cable and a gasket. Avoid this place if at all possible! The job was just under $50 and they wanted to charge an extra $8 for a saddle cable, which they didn't install on a front brake they didn't adjust. I will never go to Eddie's again. My boyfriend and I brought our bikes there. We specifically asked that the brakes be checked. First, they tried to overcharge us more than on the website. We insisted on the price listed. I guess their solution was to not bother working on the bikes. We picked up our bikes a week later, and both were worse than when we dropped them off. Also, a piece I had added to my bike (to be able to stick on a light) was missing so I can only surmise someone there took it. Do not go to this place, you will waste money to have a bike than just needs to be taken elsewhere. read more

What's better than a walk in the park? A bike ride! My friend and I rented bikes from Eddie's over the weekend and spent two hours doing loops in Central Park. It was absolutely lovely, and Eddie's was great. The customer service was excellent - friendly and fast. The bicycles were in great shape, and they have nice helmets too. The shop is just a short distance from Central Park so it's easy to ride or walk your bike to the park entrance. I will definitely rent again the next time I'm in New York, and highly recommend to anyone for bike rental or other bicycle services. read more

Not very commercial..... I went there and rented 4 bikes for my family for a few days. I paid 304 $ . Not a bad deal fort hem ! One of the bikes had a deflated tire. We had to inflate it on the road. After 10 miles down in Manahattan we realized that the tire was flat. I had to by a new tube and paid 20$. Another tire was flat the day after and had to pay 16$. OK for that but went I brought the bicycle back they charged me some 25$ up charge for a late arrival (was agreed with them). I showed the 2 bills for the repair and said that after 304$ + 36$ for a repair the up charge could be a commercial gesture... No way Sir ! You pay for everything and you had to come back to our shop fore the repair (easy when you are down Mahattan is'n it ??) . These guys think at short term. Find another shop. read more

I wanted to adjust the brakes and they told me 26$, a minute after a guy from the inside talk in Spanish and the lady on the counter say that is now 36$ and I need to leave the bike for a day. My bike was stolen first weekend in NYC. Went to Eddie's the next day, and the lovely lady at the counter put me out on a test drive with no deposit, didn't have to leave my license, I could have peddled away with her $500 bike. Long story short, I returned, bought the bike and a $100 chain, and have been back for countless free tuneups and assorted accessories. They Even traded out my seat for an old guy soft seat at no charge. Their bike mechanic is the best in the business, even fixed my girlfriend's bike she bought from Amazon. eddie's is fantastic. i bought a secondhand bike and took it in for a checkup. i thought i would need the "spring tuneup" special that they have ($59), but the woman told me all i needed was new brake pads and they don't like to charge for things you don't need. it was ready by 10 AM the next day. also i asked if there was any way to figure out what year my bike was from (thinking, of course there isn't) and she said "1970" without hesitation. I've been going to Eddie's for the past several years for just simple tune-ups. The woman behind the desk has always been very nice. I've never had an issue after taking my bike there, and often the price I've been charged is less than the price that's listed on the counter. When I lost the nut to the end of my axel wheel, I just stopped by on my way home and they just gave me a replacement free of charge. Highly recommend! Rented two bikes today with my boyfriend for 2 hours ride in Central Park! $7 per hour, $35 the whole day is very decent price. My boyfriend was lucky to got a complet new bike! Mine wasn't bad either, I'm a new rider who just ride for the 3rd time. It's easy for me. So should be pretty good for most of people. We've been to other bike shops In the neighborhood that was super overpriced and not good AT ALL! Everyone in shop is very chill and helpful in person. Great place. While I don't understand most of what the mechanics try to explain, the lady at the front desk was very helpful. Last year we needed a basket for our bike. They had installed one that was different from what I had in mind. When I brought it back, they were very helpful. They quickly changed it. A few days back I brought my bike here for a problem with the front wheel and they fixed it for much less than what was quoted elsewhere. The place is small and difficult to go in and out. But that's ok as long as the people there are good and the pricing is reasonable. read more

I got a bike that had to be put together. All of the structural parts (wheels, pedals, handlebars etc.) had been attached. I decided to go to Eddie's assuming that because it was local and small, I would be supporting my neighborhood and establishing a relationship for the future. Boy was I wrong on all accounts. I spoke to the owner on the phone, and relayed exactly what I needed- to attach the brake cables, inflate the tires, put on the kickstand, size it to me and basic check it over. The price that she quoted me was $25-35 which was reasonable. I had previouslly called another place that quoted me $80. However, when I brought it in, she said that it would be $59 because they needed to do a tune up. At the time I walked it over, I was on my way to meet for dinner so I was not bringing back home or looking for another place. When I returned today, all that was done were attach the brake cables, inflate the tires, add the reflectors and attach the water bottle holder. The owner said that they were not able to attach the tire pump. When I questioned her about the tune up, she changed her story. bikes do not get tune ups but they had to put the bike back together (not true) so that was the same charge. Then, riding home, I almost got hit by a cab because the water bottle was in the wrong place so when I went to stop, it hit me in the thigh and my bike swerved. Also, the reflector was in the wrong place and I could not lower the seat because I needed a Phillips to remove the reflector. My problem is not so much the cost which was less than the other place, but that she told me one price on the phone and a much higher price when I got there. She could have even said that she needed to look at it before giving a quote and said it would be anywhere from $25 - 59 depending. She could have said that she had been mistaken about the cost but taken the loss and charged me the $35. I would have used them in the future. I live only a couple of blocks away. I have already told two of my doormen, my porter and several neighbors in the building. Most of the residents in my co op rely on the doormen, porter and neighbors for recommendations. And especially since one of the doormen knows bikes and does his own maintenance and saw the before and after, he will be making sure that no one goes there. For me, customer service is most important and since there are several other bike shops close by, it will not be inconvenient to go elsewhere. Andrea read more
