Went in to have two squeaky disc brakes repaired. Guy said it would be better to replace the originals, as repairing them would not be safe. He quoted $110 for both. He replaced the front brake with really cheap, low-quality parts. When I caught him trying to replace the rear brake with a used part, I told him to reassemble the brake; I would take it to another shop. He then tried to charge me $110 for one brake when the original quote was for both brakes. I insisted he replace the front brake with the original parts when some guy walked in claiming to be the manager; he got in my face, literally inches away, starting screaming at me to get the f--- out or he'd mess me up. Liberty used to a great neighborhood shop, but the new owners are a total rip-off. I wound up bringing the bike to NYC Bike & Scooter, where they replaced the brake pads for $40 and the bike's as good as new ! Avoid Liberty like the plague !! read more

He was friendly and caring when I dropped of the bike. He exhibited justified pride in his extremely thorough work when I picked the bike up the next day. His great spirit importantly added to the giggle I felt as I then rode the bike afterwards. read more

I went there on a suggestion by a cyclist friend of mine. He is a pro rider so I respect his opinion. And he was not wrong! I had to have a tubeless tire replaced with a new one and most places told me I could leave it with them and pick it up sometime in the next few days or so. Here they told me to wait and did it in 15 minutes. And the work is great, the price was great, the people who work there are great...what else to say? I've been going to this shop for over 7 years - w Martin and Gene it was always honest and professional. The new mechanic, Sean, is everything but. I had an event and dropped it off for some emergency maintenance. Let them know I needed it by 3pm the next day for a bike drop off and asked if it was doable because I could bring it elsewhere if not. They said that was fine. Called the next morning and the front desk said it would be ready by 3pm. Then at 230pm they called and said it couldn't be done (!!!). In the background, I could hear Sean yelling, "I won't touch that bike!" like a 5 year old. Told the person on the phone, "please let him know I can hear him and he's being really unprofessional." Was really unnecessarily stressful because other shops I called could have done the repair but I went here because I've been a long time customer here. And when I went in, Sean told the cashier I needed a wheel rebuild because the nipples were frozen ($100 + bike parts - RIP OFF #1) and he wouldn't even make eye contact pretending he was too busy - but then when someone else came in he went to that person and tried to sell them 3 locks for their bike (RIP OFF #2). I brought my wheel to another shop who said it just needed to be trued and some minor maintenance for under $40. I came back on the weekend to pick up some parts I left there and the place REEKED of marijuana and Sean and the cashier were sooo high they were incoherent. There were open beer bottles everywhere too, and it was nowhere near closing time. This place has gone downhill. I won't bring my bike back here, and have been bringing 2 bikes for everything and referred several triathlon and cycling friends here, and tipped the mechanics and staff several times. Go to NYC Velo and Trek - they're everything a proper bike shop should be. The owner and management should have a closer look at how their staff treats customers and the recent, consistent 1 star reviews. read more

Mark this. Whomever was working August 26th @ 7:40PM: combative, rude & a poster child of a d*+*. You go in to ask one simple question and you leave wondering "sir why are you so nasty". Don't get me wrong. We all have our moments, it's New York City and you probably had to deal with BS, from tourist mostly, all day. However, I'm not one of them. I was ready to buy that $2.2K beauty that was sitting on your wall. You see, i've been in the market for a road bike for sometime and when I saw that one from the street I told myself I HAVE to take a look at it. It wouldn't have worked because it wasn't the size that I needed but simply because that man was the way that he was I would not have purchased it anyway. It's like when you have been in the mood all day it's -10° outside, but you muster up the energy to layer on clothes and make it to your destination and slapped in the face with disappointment... that's that. Fine if you need a quick, easy repair or adjustment. They do stuff pretty cheap. Avoid the "overhaul" service though. I thought I'd give them a chance, but they charged me A LOT of money for work they did not do. Really surprising because they seemed legit. In their defense, a lot of shops seem to have these "overhaul" or tune-up packages where they don't really do the stuff, but this was pretty bad. I mean, rear wheel was out of true, indexing bad, paid for cables that weren't replaced, bearings that weren't repacked etc etc read more

The folks at Liberty Cycles are incredible! I called them around 6:40pm (20 minutes before closing) asking if I could swing by to get a flat tire fixed. They said "yes", and within 5 minutes Pedro was working on the bike and ended up replacing the inner tube and a new tire for a very reasonable rate. I was out of there by 7, and the whole staff was incredibly kind and efficient. A few months ago I blew a tire and the mechanics gave me a Presta valve which I see on the internet is more expensive (RIP OFF NO. 1) than the one I needed. And also much harder to use. Now I have a hard valve in the front and an easier valve in the back making it difficult to fill my bike with air and ruining every ride. One of the cashiers told me he would help me fill the tires with my bike pump but when I came back someone named Sean (no mask) was there and he was short with me because I wouldn't just buy new bike pump from them attempted (RIP OFF NO.2) . ADDED NOTE BEFORE I STARTED TALKING I WITNESSED HIM TRYING FORCE AN ELDERLY WOMAN TO SPEND MORE MONEY AS WELL. Upon realizing a mistake had been made Sean did not offer to fix the mistake at all. He just showed me how much air to put in the tire. It is an awful chore to fill the tire every time and it is always flat ruining every ride for me. When I asked for them to fix the mistake I was told I don't have a receipt so they refused to fix their mistake and would like to charge me. (RIP OFF NO.3.) Why would I make this up? I honestly feel I've been treated like trash because I don't know much about bikes. There is a misogynistic overtone that makes the experience unbearable. I would tip the mechanics every time I came here to show my appreciation for their hard work and to be treated this way over a valve change. It's nauseating. If you need more money maybe you should focus on customer retention instead of ripping people off. I'm giving my money to Trek cause this is New York and I can just go some where else. Fred and his team were awesome! I loved the Specialized hybrid they rented me for a great rate. $6/hour but you get an even better rate if you pre-reserve online. The rental includes a basket (upon request), water bottle, map, and helmet. Extra fee if you'd like to rent a bike lock. The location is very close to Central Park and Liberty has better bikes and better prices than the chain rental places they are slightly closer to the park. I'm glad I decided to rent a bike with them! I had a great 4 hour ride and would've used the bike all day if I didn't have to catch a flight home. read more

What an easy and pleasant experience. Walked in on a weekday around 11:00 am and found out that instead of $6/hour it would be $5/hour. Awesome. Renting the bikes is painless, fill out a short form, get your bikes and helmets and off you go. Locks cost extra, but we were only going to be at Central Park, so it wasn't necessary. Central Park is only a 5 minute bike ride from Liberty Bicycles. There are a lot of places that you can rent from that are actually at the park - but after some research it seemed like those places were a bit shady. We did see some of those bike rental places and our bikes were in much better condition! We were back after two hours of biking the entire park. You pay when you return the bikes, another painless process. I would happily use Liberty Bicycles again. read more

My last experience was not much better than my last. I will definitely be using another bike shop for my maintenance needs. They did not do the job I asked, to fix the squeaky brake. Every bike shop tests a bike before they hand it over but not this one. It wasn't a rush job since the kept the bike for a few days. My brake sounded like a dying whale and if they tested the bike, they would have known. They came up with every reason in the book including 'it was raining out'. God forbid, the suffering of testing a bike in drizzle! I will be contesting the charge with Amex as they're recommended I do. The last time (both expensive) wasn't much better since they didn't fix it either. So at least they're consistent. read more

We tried to fix it, but did not work. Then I called Liberty Bike to see if they can send a car out to pick us up or direct us to the nearest bike shop. Their solution was to send me a video of how they would assemble the back wheel, so we can try to fix it. I never got the video, but we eventually fixed the wheel after 20 mins. Not too keen about their customer service. Nevertheless, the 3 bikes we rented did last for roughly 15 miles up and down Manhattan (included all of central park, most of Hudson Greenway, Brooklyn Bridge, and back to Liberty bike shop). read more

Got a very old road bike as a rental. I'm 6'3 and they apparently didn't have any of the newer nicer bikes for rental. The chain came off while I was riding.
