I would give this place zero stars if i could, but unfortunately that's not an option. we purchased 2 bikes from Wing and per their instructions shipped it to Echelon cycles for assembly. the bikes were received by the shop in early August per Fedex tracking. however, when we called the shop, they told us only one bike was received. so we called wing, who insisted that the bikes were shipped together. call after call to the shop over the next 3 weeks to ask them to please look into it seems to have fallen into a black hole. until finally one person from the shop let it slip that both bikes were received but they had sold one and chose not to tell us. they blamed everything on Wing and never took any responsibility for selling a bike that WAS NOT THEIRS TO SELL! so, finally, we received both bikes purchased on labor day weekend. we voiced our displeasure of having waited for so long, and no one in the shop accepted any fault, insisting that we are NOT their customers, and they had NO OBLIGATIONS to us. but magnanimously, to show us a gesture of good faith, instead of just "hey, we're sorry we sold your first bike by mistake and made you wait a month for assembly" - we were told it wasn't their fault, but they will generously give us 25% off if we buy anything in the shop that day only. *insert eyeroll* fast forward to 2 months later, and having ridden the bike, we find out one of them is experiencing an issue with the throttle (which they installed) and throwing an error. so, figuring since they put it together they might be able to help out with what the issue was. again, browbeating it to us that this was "not their problem" as we were not their customer, and therefore they had zero obligation to help us. the only way, was for us to purchase a part from Wing, wait for them to ship it, and then they will put us on the schedule to install. but troubleshooting was not part of their job. Incidentally, it was error 21 - which according to the Wing website, is "current abnormality". a search on google says to check the motor cable. this is possibly a safety issue, and they wouldn't help. let that sink in for a bit. here i thought as a bike shop, they could help. so i guess if you were spending money to buy the bike at full price from their shop, they'll consider to help you. but if you didn't get it there, don't bother as they have told us, they have no obligations to help us with a bike that was not purchased from them. there are plenty of bike shops around, do yourself a favor, find someone else to give your hard earned dollars to. read more

Sadly, more and more brick and mortar shops are disappearing. I took my wife's Dahon in with a flat. She hardly rides it. The guy looked at the wheel and said it may be shot. The Dahon had an old school bike seat. I thought I would get a more comfortable seat for my wife which cost $55. I got charged $128 bucks for the seat and the tire repair. Obvious, I asked for what. Then the mistaken charge for the child seat was removed but I was still charged $12 bucks for fitting the $55 seat and $14.80 for putting in a new $10 inner tube. I asked can't you just repair the flat and they said no. I didn't have much patience with the guy who couldn't handle the POS that flummexed him and tried to overcharge me $30 bucks, spend 10 minutes trying to figure out why. I want to support the local shops but this one I can't. They seem to have the goods, etc. but struggling read more

I needed a bike case today to take my bike across the country. I came in one month ago, gave them my card info, ID info and reserved one. I literally also called this morning and they confirmed that yes, one case was indeed set aside for me. I then show up literally 2 hours later and they have no idea about my reservation. They have no more cases. They claimed that they tried to call me a few weeks earlier to confirm card payment but I have absolutely no calls from them, or voicemails or emails. Absolutely terrible experience that puts me in a last minute pickle where I need to now go and find a bike case otherwise my entire upcoming trip is ruined. I would not recommend trusting these guys for anything. read more

I am a big cycling fanatic. I ride a lot and as such, I have to often get minor adjustments to my bike or replace things that break. I have been in to Echelon a few times in the past couple of months. One time was a dirty bottom bracket, another was a broken spoke. I also bought some apparel there recently and they were really helpful there as well. My recent visit was to buy headlights and tail lights. I showed up 20 minutes after closing and they let me in after some begging on my part. Even though they were closed and probably wanted to go home, they were really patient and helped me find the right lights and put them on the bike for us. I am always happy with the service I recieve at Echelon, I recommend you check them out. read more

I've had bad experiences here, so started using the shop on christopher and west. Out of desperation, I decided to try Echelon again and was reminded of why I don't support this local business. They're downright nasty. I had asked them about a bike that is pricey and like people who had no idea of what I was asking about, they decided to be condescending. Worst bike shop. Third accident I've had this week. First the handle bars went left while I was riding, then the seat slacked forward, and lastly the crank is loose. If you are an adult and want to chance it fine, but if you have kids I wouldn't risk this level of negligence. I feel like a crash dummy at this point. read more

Echelon Cycles - Had to face plant to stop my bike. - Bikes Near Me - New York, New York

Work the customer...they work on you more than the bike.   I normally go to Bicycle Habitat up in Chelsea, but I decided to try Echelon bikes since they're closer to me open an hour earlier. I brought one of my dusty folding bikes with a new crank I needed installed.  To test them out, I also brought my winter tires to be installed, along with a tube if needed.    Young guy quotes me about $30 for the crank replacement, $11 for the tires.  Old guy doesn't say anything. I got three calls over the course of an hour.  Young guy has left me multiple phone messages.  They want to sell me new inner tubes. He tells me the tubes I have in won't fit the wider tires.   I say sure.    Thirty minutes later I have more voicemail.   They want to sell me a new front brake cable.  Now I start to wonder why didn't they do a full once over on the bike before the first call?  I politely decline.  It's something I can do myself.   aWhen I come back, I find the bike in sorry shape.  The tires are on, the crank is on, but the bike seat is bent out of position. It's tangled up with another bike. There's still dust on the fenders.  It's clear there was no care here.  When a bike shop has pride, regardless of what shape a bike comes in, they don't let a bike leave like looking dusty and neglected.  Simple wipedown. A new guy is running the register. The bill charges twice the labor quoted for installing the tires, along with the new tubes.  Sorry, their mistake.  The young guy quoted me for one, not two.  Work is done, I think to myself, but yeah, a mistake. At the end, all still cordial, after three calls with two upsell attempts, plus a double charging, the new guy asks if I want to leave my email address so they can email me stuff.  Thanks, no. I wanted to like Echelon Cycles.  They're located close to me, but the experience was all "work the customer". Their work on bikes shows no love of bikes.  Go to Bicycle Habitat in Chelsea.  Their hours are shorter, but they're upright and professional with you and your bike. read more

I was belittled when I said the brakes were loose (they were) and scolded for going "too far" on my test ride (I went the smallest lap that avoided one-ways and construction -- plus they had my ID *and* credit card as collateral). If I could give this place zero stars I would, please don't waste your money here. Every time I have gone in here I have had to deal with a terrible attitude from the so-called manager Curtis. My first day walking into the store I was greeted with attitude because it was the day after they had been looted due to BLM protest which just seems like bad service to me. I understand being frustrated because of the situation and being overwhelmed with emotions but then the business shouldn't be open to customers, you shouldn't be projecting your bad mood and onto someone who is inquiring about purchasing a frame that's hanging in the window. Even after the attitude I still purchased the bike because of the great deal from the owner. Upon picking up my frame the bike is making a weird noise and instead of examining they tell me to come back so I ride away and find out that the bolts in my wheels aren't even tightened and could have been a very dangerous and potentially life threatening incident which they didn't care about because they already got the sale. From that moment on I decided I would do everything in my power to not do business here. Fast Forward to last week where I decided to give the shop another try. I deal with Curtis's condescending attitude just to purchase a piece that I need for one of my bikes. Ordered the piece paid and couldn't get a straight quote on shipping cost even though the piece was already in the store's possession. Due to me Frustrating Curtis with my line of questioning he decides to call me an asshole under his breath while walking away twice! Please don't shop here unless you want horrible service and to be called an asshole by the manager Curtis and a shit customer by the owner Dan because I told him I wouldn't shop there. read more

Was really excited to pick up a first time bike purchase with the hopes that this team would help me figure out the new bike, but nope. Guy just pointed at the bike, told me to pick it up and leave. Of course three weeks later, they are bombarding me with phone calls and emails saying their worker forgot to ask for my confirmation number for the bike and they desperately needed it. No sorry, no nothing. That's it. Seems like they don't really care about the customer... Only care about making their money and that's it. All business. Not very friendly. These guys will pay very close attention to you if you're a serious cyclist with a bike that costs thousands of dollars. However, if you're a commuting casual cyclist, they don't give you nearly the level of attention or care. I found this out after a few poor quality maintenance jobs. For example, I had to come back twice to get the same flat tire replaced, just for it to get flat a third time. I took my bike to another shop and they were able to find the small piece of metal that caused the problem within minutes. Don't bother with these guys unless you're sporting a high end ride. read more

I've been having a difficult time finding a bike shop in NYC that could help service my ebike. When I called, Curtis was very helpful and patient with my questions regarding my ebike. Actually, the entire staff was very helpful and they have a good range of bikes and supplies for new and advanced cyclists. Not only did they repair my flat, they also checked the brakes and provided a preventative fix that would have caused problems down the road. read more

Danny and team here really know bikes, especially specialty import bicycles such as Focus. They demonstrate a high-level of passion, care and quality through the service and tune-ups they provide. After my bike was totaled by a reckless Uber driver, I thought the love of my life was gone forever. Not only did they get her back running again, they did so in even better condition before the accident in a quick turnaround. And since Echelon is a Focus dealer (the BMW of bicycles, trust me), they were able to get replacement parts far cheaper than other bike shops across Manhattan Thanks for being a cut above the rest, Echelon! read more

When you walk into the average bike shop nowadays you're greeted with a "why are you bothering" me attitude from someone who is often aggravated you are wasting their time at all. I needed a suspension fork pumped up. One said they couldn't turn on the compressor since it was 30 minutes to closing, another said no since I modified it with a motor, and two others said they did not have a fork pump. Curtis' bike tech pumped it up with the tools that they have because they're a REAL bike shop. I needed brakes bled & they did it, in a half hour, for a rate 25% less than anyone else in the city. They pointed out other issues and addressed them at no extra cost, and with none of the standard fare hipster holier-than-thou attitude. They're actually happy you're here! I paid double the asking rate. I suggest you do as well: for a Manhattan business with this level of service, they genuinely are *too* cheap. Curtis' team is above the fray, and you absolutely don't want people like this to believe that the extra they put in to being good at their job over other shops isn't worth it. Reward people who do their job well. Get your bike fixed here! read more

Been circling this place for years, finally went in last month to have my bike fixed up - it had been lying fallow for a year or so - and while they did a fine job with the fixing (for $100), the attitude mentioned in some of the preview reviews was definitely present. The man behind the counter joked that the bike 'was probably bought at Walmart' (it wasn't, it's a fairly well known brand). That sort of put down humor, while not unusual in a chat room or with an old friend, is not what I'm looking to pay $100 dollars for. Yes, they have fancy bikes, and yes, they know what they're talking about - but if I come out of a shop feeling bad about having given them my money, I'm not going to go back anytime soon. I want smaller businesses to succeed these days, so I hope they pull it together and realize that kindness does, in fact, count. read more

The owner, Pablo, is extremely knowledgeable about bikes and a great salesman! He makes you feel great about spending $$. It's not often that you can say that, right?! My person has been looking to purchase her first bike for a few months and 74836373 (realistically about 12) bike shops later...*drum roll and clashing cymbals*...her first...dun dun DUN...bike was purchased here!! *claps and hoorahs* She got exactly what she wanted AND mostly within her budget. Although I was only here for support, Pablo persuaded me to upgrade my pedals (Trek, you could at least give me metal pedals!). The wait here can be really long especially since Covid-19 hit the city but it's worth the wait. I was helped out by a woman who works there and was ready to drop some serious coins but through her recommendations the issues I thought I had wasn't as bad. She could have listened to me and charged me, but her concern was to gain my trust and it was well earned. If you're looking for a passionate trustworthy group who loves cycling please give them a visit. I would go as soon as they open and be ok with possibly leaving your bike for a few days. For those who are in the market for the purchase of a bike you probably experienced complete lack of inventory and bike stores that have lost their way for customer service. I called 20 stores in the New York area to find a bike and Echelon was the one store that took the time to find my target bike. After many mishaps due to Cannondale, Echelon kept in touch with me and was always friendly. They, specifically Curtis, always answered the phone whereas so many other shops in New York will not. Curtis was also knowledgeable and made sure I understood the process whereas most stores if they do answer want to get off the phone immediately. The bike came in and was damaged by Cannondale and Echelon was able to pivot quickly and found me a replacement and had it ready the same day. Setup was great and easy. Thanks to Max who made that pivot and got me set up and riding again. read more

I had a mixed experience here today. A couple buddies of mine and I came in to do some shopping; one of them wanted a new bike and the other and myself were looking at gps speedometer units and other misc items. While shopping, I accidentally knocked the sensor off my magnet trip meter via breaking the cheap zip tie. I asked the man in the back, a middle aged (i think Carribean) man if he has a replacement. He just started at me with that NYC look that screams "eff you, don't bother me". Literally not saying a word to me (nor did i get one of the many zip ties in his toolbox) Terrible service. We did however receive great service from the younger white guy up front (forgot to catch their names) who showed us different items and explained their differences, gave price quotes and got a couple bikes down for my friend. Great service from the second guy, unfortunately I was too put off by the first guy to actually buy anything. He may have been the owner. read more

I went to Echelon Cycles because it's conveniently located in the West Village. But I'm never going back again. Their customer service was very bad; they were extremely rude to me because I wanted to try on a few bikes to check my bike size. They wouldn't even let me touch the bikes because they thought I was just trying to find my size only to buy a bike at a different store. To conclude, Echelon Cycles is an extremely selfish and/or greedy business with no consideration to possible customers. Their customer service is extremely bad. What brought me into the store was a bike in the window, now my bike. It was true love at first site. 2 years later and it's only gotten better. Pedro (pretty sure that's his name) the owner, is super friendly and always says hi if I'm walking by or filling up air out front. Danny who works there is also very nice and helped me a few times with some parts. They actually sent back to the manufacturer a fender bracket that had broken and had a replacement sent and installed it free of charge. Overall, Echelon is an excellent store, with helpful staff and great part of the neighborhood. read more

I came here on 3/9/21 to pick out my first road bike. After a short 5 min wait outside, I was greeted and helped by Will. He asked what my budget was and what my riding needs were. He then showed me one that he liked. I gave it a spin for the next 20-30 min and it felt great. He also demonstrated how to clip in and out, and while he was on the bike, I could tell he also genuinely enjoyed being on this bike. He helped me with choosing all the other accessories. He showed me some recommendations including the gear he himself used. He also respected my budget and I never felt any upselling. About an hour after arriving, I was pedaling home. It's now a week later and I couldn't be happier with the bike. I did a 40 mile ride the other day and it felt great. If you're reading this Will, you're the best. Steel is real. read more

I visited several bike stores in NYC to buy a new fixed-gear bike, and I had the worst experience at Echelon Cycles. It was like being at a car dealership that's only trying to make a sale. First, the staff there isn't all that attentive as you're looking through the store. They're simply stand behind the counter as ask you what you need, instead of stepping up to you and greeting you like a human being. You only gain their attention when you have to somehow prove that you're intending to buy something. If you're there just to try stuff out or get advice from them, even with the intention of coming back and buying next time, you can forget about good customer service. If I'm expecting to pay $700+ for a bike, I want to take my time, try different bikes for their size, ride, etc. I think it's perfectly reasonable for me to ask questions and just even try jumping on a bike for size. Apparently, they're not ok with that. They pulled down a Fuji Feather for me to see, and when I began asking questions about it, it was all about the sale. They did not give me any points of comparison against other bikes. They weren't very informative. All they can say about the Fuji was that it had "squirmy" handling and it is fun to ride. Go to another bike store, like NYC Velo in the East Village or Zen Bicycles. They'll respect you as a customer, cyclist (whether first-time or veteran bike-buyer) and give you all the technical and non-technical information you need to make the right choice, even if you're not buying from them. read more

By far my favorite bike shop! Absolutely amazing. These guys are super smart and work quickly and are comfortable with high-end bikes. The work was very reasonably priced and done in less than a day. I've had maintenance, repairs and upgrades done in at least 10 bike shops in SF, Boston, and NY and if I had the choice, I would always come to this shop first. read more
