I usually write reviews about restaurants but given that there's not a lot of information on the…read moreinternet about this company, I feel obligated to contribute a review about them here. I first heard about this company through the Richmond Hill Taste of the Hill multicultural festival that my family went to, Waypoint has a booth there with a draw to win a trip for 2 to Hawaii. As expected, several members of my family entered the draw. About 2 weeks later, my mom got a call saying had won the draw but they needed to ask some questions first. They asked several demographic questions such as whether she was married, between the age of 35-70 and whether her income was above a certain range, because in order to receive the prize, you had to fill this criteria. This seemed a little sketchy to me to ask these personal questions because usually it's a skill testing question so I asked them to send it to me in a written email. In the email they provided an address and an invitation to go to a travel expo show, to claim the prize you had to attend the 90min show. It also said 'each specially selected couple is guaranteed to receive one of the three high valued gifts' without mention of any other obligations or fine print. So I thought - why not, I'll just go with my elderly mom to make sure it's not a scam and that she knows what's going on. After I drove an hour to Mississauga, we walk in the door to find several other couples there and each Waypoint rep is to be paired with each couple. When I was asked to sign in, my moms name wasn't even on the check in sheet, which was a huge red flag. I figured if we drove all the way here, we might as well listen to the 90min presentation and learn something- and I definitely did...about marketing techniques. The gist of the presentation was that Waypoint was started by this tax lawyer who (IMO cleverly)found a loophole in the system where you can use your RRSP to buy into Waypoint, almost like a timeshare but without the maintenance costs of owning a timeshare. You buy into Waypoint's point system that can be redeemed for extremely cheap resort packages. The catch is, you have to pay a $20K (today only! After that it's $24K) one time fee that you can get $~10K back through your tax returns. There was a strong emphasis on signing up today, then you can receive your prize of the Hawaii vacation. Now the reason I'm giving Waypoint 2 stars instead of 1 is that I was pretty impressed with their ability to employ the textbook marketing techniques. I have taken business classes before and their use of prize draws to obtain people's contact info, sleek powerpoints, a well-dressed engaging presenter, and urgency advertising was all a great review in sales. They even brought in a sales rep who was Asian to cater to my Asian mom! Unfortunately, I didn't think this was a worth it investment for us- maybe it is better for retirees who have more free time to travel, but also it seems questionable about the appropriateness of using ones RRSP for something like this.

This is somewhat awkward as I wrote a great review about this company a few weeks back and now its…read moreno where to be found . Anyhow Ill make this short and sweet ,,,I have attended at least a dozen presentations like this while traveling the globe to no avail until I had seen THIS because THIS actually makes sense ... the ability to invest with TAX money is ingenious and what better investment than in travel .. at least for me because travel=happiness! Love it!

I have used AC Vacations three times, and each time I swore I wouldn't do it again. And then…read morestupidly, I did it again. Unfortunately, they have a flight-hotel deal with our preferred resort in Mexico and WestJet doesn't. So we keep trying hoping they will get better. They don't. They are seriously the worst!! So just don't do it!! The biggest thing to keep in mind is that, despite what the name might have you believe, they are NOT Air Canada. Why are they called "Air Canada" Vacations, you might ask? So that they can deceive you into thinking they are the same company as your trusted airline. They are a separate entity with separate prices, rules, practices, etc. Most importantly, if you have status with Air Canada, you do not get most of those perks. You can't upgrade with your e-upgrades. You can't even book regular seats for free! It's false advertising that they call themselves "Air Canada". You also can't manage your reservation through Air Canada. You have to use their terrible online system, which doesn't let you do anything. This time, I called AC Vacations to pay the difference between my economy class ticket to upgrade to business class. They quoted me a price that is more than the cost to book the flights directly on Air Canada! When I asked them why, they said they buy a seat block from Air Canada and so their prices are different from AC prices. You might be tempted to book with AC Vacations. But learn from my poor choices and just don't. It's so not worth the headaches and lack of service and hours you will spend on hold with employees who are poorly trained and don't care at all (I mean NOT AT ALL) whether you have spent many thousands of dollars with Air Canada and have earned status. Seriously. They don't care. We will book WestJet next time and find another great resort. They fly directly to Cancun from YYC and hopefully they have better service. I mean, I cannot conceive of how the service could be worse. But maybe I'm tempting fate. We will see.
