I was in town driving down The Post Rd. and eyed this "Leonce Antiques" store on the side of the road so I pulled in and checked it out. I've always had a thing for antiques and flea markets they're like interactive time capsules. Out In the front of the store is an eclectic array of antiques mostly pre turn of the Century stuff and as I walked inside I was shocked.... Leonce Antiques was like a European fine arts museum yet with a cool fun atmosphere given the owner Bernard was a fun, cool guy and too wealth of knowledge. There was one room with looked like an antiques silver vault, wall to wall sterling EVERYTHING: vases, urns, flatware, candelabras, another room all chandeliers, another room a whole wall of sconces. The place is deceptively HUGE...I wandered into the back and under a box of books I spy two vintage black leather chairs. Behold early 60's pair of Knoll office chairs...perfect...I need a set to go with my Nelson Bench. I get Bernard, he writes me up, we toss'em in the Jeep and I'm on my way. Leonce is a MUST CHECK-IT-OUT PLACE..Mostly European and early American higher end pieces....You won't find any of that corny Americana here. His collection is very eclectic....out in front all pre-turn of the Century pieces who would have guessed I would find a pair of mid century Knoll chairs!

Anyway, as soon as we got there I let my wife out of the car and told her I was going to go buy some crap at the nearest Goodwill. She was a little disappointed, but by now she's used to that. So I ended up at this Goodwill in Shelton and I have to say, I was a bit disappointed as well. While most of these little factory towns in the Naugatuck Valley had a decidedly rundown rustbelt vibe to them, this Goodwill was located in a big splashy new shopping center with those corny fake facades and the interior was brightly lit, nice-smelling and overall pretty clean. Right off the bat, none of this does anything for me. But I press on. As far as the goods are concerned, this place is on par with any of the other countless Goodwill's around Connecticut, which means mostly newer, boring clothing - fleeces, khakis and checkered shirts for the men and Walmart tops and endless aisles of bland "coatigan"-type thingies for the women. You will also find a few racks of housewares items which consist of mostly damaged dishware, Boyd's Bears figurines and generic wall art. The media selection will contain tons of not very good books and CDs and a smaller amount of really not very good records. However, today I got lucky and I scored two old plaid blazers, a couple pairs of sunglasses and a giant 6XL 3D-printed shirt with a rooster holding a machine gun. Turns out the blazers had been feasted upon by moths or weevils or some other blazer-eating insects and the sunglasses were prescription, but the 6XL rooster shirt? That is simply pure perfection! Now, my wife puts up with a lot, but ditching her friends at a winery so I could pay ten bucks for a very large man's rooster shirt, might be a bridge too far so I smuggled that one home to make an appearance at some future date to be determined.

The store is very neat and orderly - clothing is arranged by size and color (to the best of their ability), the housewares section is neat and tidy, the book section is concise and easy to navigate, and the aisles are set with enough space for people to browse and pass one another without playing the game of "are we going to rub our bodies together in the pandemic?" - a game we all shudder with dread at. I will also say that this store does a good job of pricing things fairly, particularly when you compare them to their Westport counterpart. If you're looking for a deal - particularly on clothing - this is going to be a great location to browse!
