The garden is organized into themed sections with pathways to follow to take you through the different garden areas. There is the Japanese Garden, the Butterfly Garden, the Children's Garden, and the Rose Garden, to name a few. Each visit is a little different, depending on the time of year and what is in bloom. On this visit, I was amazed by all the different dahlias, the beautiful roses, and the whimsical rock garden populated by gnomes.

There is a parking area with a bit of grass for dogs and kids to stretch their legs. There was one person in a truck backed in the shade and another in a parking spot having a sandwich while his dog enjoyed the grass. There is, also, boat launch which is available during the rainy season, I'm told, but right now the river is so low that there is no river at the end of the boat ramp right now at the start of September. The gentleman down there said that the river was the lowest he's seen (and he grew up here) this summer because of the drought brought on by global warming. Harold and Sid Nichols Park and Boat Ramp was constructed with funds from the City of Winston, the State Marine Board, and the Department of Fish & Wildlife using Federal Sport Fish Restoration Funds. The facility is owned and operated by the City of Winston. This project would not have been possible without the additional support of the Umpqua Fishermen's Association and the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. I appreciate the city for keeping up this wonderful place to be by the river so close to the city.

That being said, this park, albeit somewhat primitive (just not fancy), is really nice. The grounds keepers do a nice job keeping up with the mowing and pruning. The path on the far side of the park leads down to the water and gives you a great vantage point of where the North and South Umpqua rivers run together prior to becoming the Umpqua and heading out to the pacific ocean. The setting here provided for some nice back drops for some pictures with family. Unless you are planning a picnic or something your trip here probably won't take exceptionally long, but it's well worth the few minute drive to get here and check it out.

As far as parks go, they don't get much smaller than this. Colliding Rivers is a little turnout,…read moreviewpoint and short nature trail overlooking a pretty damn stunning confluence of two rivers. There's nary a section of the North Umpqua that's not scenic as hell. And if you're traveling east up the river, Colliding Rivers is your first real glimpse of the goodness to come. The wife and I stopped in here on a recent road trip around Oregon, and it's worth the short detour. There's really not much going on here, but the rivers are beautiful and I hear tell that in higher water seasons, it can get kind of exciting. As it stood we ventured by in a historically dry and hot year, so while the pools and cliffs were enticing (I really wanted a swim) we simply took in the views, snapped some photos, walked the short nature trail, and read up on the history of this confluence. Oregon is full of great scenic byways, and spots like this are peppered along this specific one. If you're cruising by, take 5 minutes and check out this beauty.
