CJS Heating & Air and Bassett Services of Dayton, Ohio, I've been torn between writing to express my thoughts and opinions about the company's operations. I chose CJS based on its 5-star rating and positive reviews, but we've been deeply disappointed with the installation process of our new HVAC system. From the very beginning, we've been frustrated by the lack of communication among the technicians, supervisors, branch managers, and other staff members. While the technicians who've worked on the system are all incredibly talented, professional, and personable, it's crucial to have a connection with the people hired for a major home renovation project. Homeowners spend several days or even weeks with the contractors, so it's an opportunity to get to know them. Here's how the situation unfolded. In late March, our old flooring was damaged due to damp moisture under the planks, gaps, and mold. The remaining planks had to be removed, and the mold cleaned before the renovation could begin. We had to replace our entire HVAC system from a down-flow to an up-flow. The slab ductwork was concreted, and new ductwork was installed in the attic. Another company performed slab jacking with polyurethane, which caused us to endure the inconvenience of walking on a concrete floor from March to July. As customers, we value clear communication, so it was disheartening to witness the lack of support between the company technicians and supervisors. Observing the situation, it became evident that there was a rift of internal conflict within the company. On June 11th, Dominic, Brandon, and a female technician who was just starting her career arrived around the end of May. We were informed that the job would take two days, possibly three. Initially, things seemed to be progressing well. However, on June 12th, the situation took a turn for the worse. Dominic, Brandon, and another technician arrived. The day began well, but we soon noticed Dominic's frustration and poor performance. The ductwork hadn't been installed to the attic frame, and the temperature gauge was malfunctioning. The company replaced it with a new one, and we were assured everything was working properly. However, this proved to be false. The temperature gauge kept showing high readings, leading to a significant increase in our electric bill. We requested another technician, CJS, to recheck the entire system. Dominic returned alone that day, as his colleague had called out sick. Upon his arrival, he realized the extent of the unfinished work. Two areas of the ductwork had collapsed, and the vents were not properly framed. Insulation and dust were scattered everywhere, effectively turning the attic into an air conditioning unit. Brayden had assured us the job was complete, but Dominic worked until 1 am that morning, insisting it was done. We repeatedly requested a return, as we still felt the dust and insulation. Dominic assured us everything was fine, but we discovered other issues. We feel like we've been victims of internal company conflicts. We've been treated like two complaining old ladies, but you underestimated our determination. This major renovation project lacked attention to detail, and the technicians failed to inform us and upper management that the job wasn't finished. If your workers are unhappy and in conflict with management, customers suffer from a lack of trust in the company. Communication between employees and customers was poor, and in good conscience, we can't give this company a five-star rating for their service. It took the entire month of June and mid July for your company to complete this project, which is unacceptable. We understand that life happens and there are things beyond the company's control, but this is unacceptable. We encountered some incredible individuals during this process. Please ensure that everything is handled correctly. If your customers perceive the lack of communication and frustration between technicians and upper management, the company will start losing customers. I genuinely hope you can improve the company's communication, particularly with the company owners and managers. Perhaps there should be some compensation for our patience and understanding. I need to focus on my health now. The last day on July 27th, upper management failed to inform the technician, Dominic, about the necessary materials to complete the job accurately. Dominic completed the job, but we both informed Dominic that day that the company needs to improve communication because we can see the internal conflict as customers. Despite their 5-star rating, we cannot give them a 5-star rating based on our experience. This job required meticulous attention to detail, and your company's issues affected the quality of the work. It has been incredibly frustrating because it has taken two months to resolve all the issues that were not addressed during the first two or three days. We had to cancel a spring tuneup scheduled in July 2026 due to a death in the family. The next scheduled appointment for a spring tuneup was December 2026. This was unreasonable and unacceptable. Additionally, you can't talk to a live person. They have an AI answering system and you don't get a call back from a live person for over a week. We called another local Company and had the spring tuneup completed in less than 24 hours for a very reasonable price. From the looks of many of the CJS reviews they aren't the customer focused service you're looking for to have service your HVAC. read more

Ever since CJS was bought out (though they say it's still managed by them ... doubtful) you can't get a respectable time for needed service. They continually try to upsell you to a preferred customer plan for a large amount of money that "they say" will get you quicker service. My 3 year old A/C unit is not working and the earliest appointment I can get isn't for a week. So, is this just crappy service or both crappy service AND crappy heating and air equipment? Called another reputable company and got an appointment for next day for similar service call fee. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere if you need a new HVAC or service of an existing one. read more

They are very quick to try to sell you something but trying to get the yearly maintenance visit scheduled was nearly impossible. They keep rescheduling, ever since they joined with fire and ice. They were a really good company when they were independent. read more

This place sucks ass. Wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy! Can't get them out to inspect a unit purchased through them. Been waiting since October of last year for a furnace inspection. Just received a text message that my appointment for tomorrow, July 14, just got cancelled due to "unforeseen circumstances". I would go out and buy a shit unit from a flea Market and do a self install before I would ever call these assholes out to do anything, due to me waiting and waiting and for 4 appointments to get cancelled, GET NOTHING!!! The American way these days, get your money then never seen again!!! F@&king assholes!!!! Even more pissed because I have to give these dicks a 1 star review, that they aren't worth!!! read more

Is no star an option? We have had our schedules appointments cancelled at least 5 times since March 2026. We had a morning appointment, no one showed up by 1:30 so I called them. The lady said she was having "one of those days" and did not get around to calling me that my appointment got rescheduled. Since then, four rescheduling. Our hvac is two years old. Technician came out yesterday and could t figure out why ac not working. He set me up for first afternoon appointment today. Well, I guess that means 4pm! And then I get a call that he got called on an emergency call and someone will show up tonight some tone. I guess they grew and are having a tough time adjusting. But that's not my problem! Would give zero if I could. Set up an appt up have A/C ck'd because making a noise. Set up appt was AI and couldn't get thru to a human. Then received several texts and reminders and confirmed appt thru one of the many text. Yet no show !! Waited 12-5pm no call nothing! I tried calling at 4pm to see if they were on their way. Only got thru to AI and again no human. Apparently they do not want business. Still never heard from them !! read more

ZERO STARS!! For three years, I have experienced repeated system failures, missed appointments, and a complete lack of communication from staff. The technicians admitted that the original air conditioning unit installed by CJS was the wrong size for my home. This error caused repeated system failures and required a full replacement. Less than a year after the replacement, the system has failed again. The indoor unit froze completely. The technician stated that the return air duct is undersized and should have been replaced during the installation of the new unit. This was not done. I have made numerous calls requesting updates and have not received a single returned call. I was told someone would contact me to schedule the necessary ductwork correction. No one has. I had an appointment scheduled for a recent service visit. No technician arrived, and no one contacted me to cancel or reschedule. I have repeatedly asked to speak with a manager over the past three years and have never received a call back. read more

I see this company has 2.5 star that's rating well deserved. I contracted with CJS now called Bassett for a HVAV air conditioner check. The time frame was 12 pm -5 pm. No one showed up so around 4:55 PM I called them. The rep stated the tech is finishing a job a I would be next. This dude didn't get to my house till 6:45. Stayed till almost 9PM and kept telling me how defective my compressor was and I should consider getting it fixed or replaced. Took 30 minutes while sitting in his car to write a proposal. If I could give negative stars this company would deserve it! They started to install a heating unit in my parents' home three months ago. My parents have been living without a fully functioning furnace for all three of those months, in the weather that we have been having this winter. They would come to work, say they had to run an errand, and not return. They would say a technician was coming and no would show. They did not return phone call or emails for days at a time. The unit was finally repaired a week ago and it has malfunctioned three times since then. I encourage you to read the reviews on the Better Business Bureau's website. Monthly membership is a waste of money--no "priority" given. I am extremely disappointed with the service since the transition from Drake's Heating & Air. I originally had my system installed by Drake's and had a great experience, but since Basset/CJS took over, it has been a total disaster. I have been paying a monthly membership fee specifically to receive priority scheduling for seasonal maintenance. However, the scheduling has been an absolute joke: December: I had an appointment for heat maintenance. They called and pushed it back to April, promising they would perform both the heat and AC maintenance at that time to make up for it. April 6: They called to reschedule again. This time, they moved me to April 10 and informed me they would now only be doing the heat maintenance, meaning they'd have to come back a third time for the AC. The "Priority" Insult: During the April 6 call, the representative explicitly told me they were bumping my appointment because I was "only maintenance" and they had a repair to do instead. What is the point of paying for a monthly "priority" membership if maintenance customers are treated as the lowest priority? April 10 (Today): They called and rescheduled me yet again--all the way out to May 28. It has been six months of delays and broken promises. I have been paying monthly for a service I am not receiving. If you are looking for reliability or value for your membership, look elsewhere. In February 2026 CJ's called me for a free yearly inspection of my furnace. The technician came out and drilled a hole to check air flow and drilled right into my coolant line releasing all the coolant into my house and oil spilled all over the inside of my furnace. I had no furnace for the next 3 days. They broke my furnace and Air conditioner. Owner had the gall to tell me instead of fixing the AC how bout we just give you a new AC for a special price of $10,000. I told him I shouldn't have to buy a new one because you were the ones who broke it. They came and replaced the coolant lines and cleaned up the furnace for free but of course when the heat of summer came the compressor on my AC shorted out. Ended up having to buy a new AC from another company who told me what they did probably caused the compressor failure. New company I hired also installed a new Trane furnace for almost half the "special" cost CJ's offered me. Stay away from this company. read more

Bought a new furnace and AC in January. Furnace worked well. In May we turned on the air conditioning and it wouldn't cool. Called for service. They came out, said it had leaked all the freon out from faulty copper tubing they've been having trouble with. Came out the next day to replace copper tubing and recharge brand new unit. One month later, air is not working, coils are freezing up. Called for service on a Sunday evening, said they would be out Monday morning and never showed or called. We called them that afternoon and they said they had to reschedule for Tuesday between 12-5. Tuesday came and again they were a no show and no calls. I called them at 6:30. Still waiting for repair. Terrible technical service and terrible communication. - none!! read more

AC had a problems and tech diagnosed it as a motor failure. 10 days and 4 calls later and they still do not have a status on the part or when it will arrive. They appear to make no effort to find out where the part is or when it will arrive. I cannot believe a fan motor is a special order part. Either way, they have made no effort to get me status on it. Now 18 days later and NO communications. So no one there has any idea when the part will be available? This unit is 4 years old so the parts are still being made. I have used CJS for many years and have found their service quality to be outstanding! Today I had a maintenance technician named Wilson come to do the yearly service on my air conditioners who did a wonderful job. He was professional and clean and did not over recommend services I did not need. I really appreciate this in a company! I purchased my whole house system with air and heating units over 5 years ago and the system la have saved me a lot of money in utility costs. I trust their company and I know if I ever have an issue with any technician (I have not) but if I did I would suspect they were new and would either learn or not be there long. All have been the highest quality and I also hear how well they treat their technicians which also makes me want to support their company over others! read more

I am a customer (that uses them regularly for the last 5 years) and I have been trying to get in touch with them for weeks to reschedule an appointment, no one has returned my call. A technician reached out by text asking if I had any projects that needed done and replied that I did not but that I needed to reschedule an appt and his was response was "thank you I will close this ticket" and I never heard from anyone. read more

Furnace went out, 1st told us heat exchanger cracked, that was wrong. Used the excuse couldn't see because of soot, only took a little extra effort to figure out. Told us new furnace install in 2 days, then it turned into 7 days. Installed new furnace, it was bad. Came out 2 more days before finally figuring it out. Part will be here on Monday, nope, Tues, part here, placed will call, so we will get there whenever. Called several times before live person, will be out Wed, crickets. Finally got person and wrong part was ordered, but that just like the furnace not our fault. What about our trashed basement? Oh that still hasn't been taken care of, would I have said something if it was? Oh we will be out today to get it cleaned up. They did provide electric space heaters, and may pay for the extra electric, but at this point that is just placating. When asked about compensation for missing work, going on 7+ service calls, or promised service calls, and the chaos to our lives, oh we will have to discuss it. After this I will never work with this company again! After reading other reviews and this ongoing issue, I am very concerned about future issues read more

Do not trust their installation. Had a competitor in to do something on the system they installed. He found numerous problems with the way the system was installed. This included a minor gas leak which meant they never did the simple soap bubble leak test. Contacted CJS they agreed there were numerous problems with the installation and corrected them. Understand this occurred even though CJS sent out their inspector after the original inspection and he signed off on the installation. Also we had a seasonal inspector come out once after the installation and he failed to see the installation problems.F read more

Had a tech come in and do maintenance on my gas furnace. He used a camera connected to his phone and looked inside the heat exchanger. He said it was cracked and likely spreading carbon monoxide throughout my house. Tried to sell me a new furnace. I keep carbon monoxide detectors by every register and there was no carbon monoxide detected ever. I don't trust this company. I find that companies that use the words "honest" and "trust" in their ads are very often the least trustworthy. read more

Cute, gimmicky ads but this Grandma and Grandpa did not approve in fact we felt taken advantage of. They did well with furnace and a/c but we made the mistake of using their services to replace our gas water heater. This was scheduled out 3 weeks, included adding an expansion tank and roof vent. They showed up as scheduled 3 weeks later, shut off water and gas on a cold morning. Let me know they had to make a run back to shop! They had the wrong water heater loaded an electric one on truck. Returned later with one from Lowes (not the commercial grade) they written up in initial estimate. When completed I inquired about gas valve they replied furnace guy don't know much about water heaters. When finished I asked about the expansion tank, replied they weren't aware of that and had no roof vent either. Took weeks to try and sort this out called County myself to set up inspection, each time we tried to call CJS to sort out issues, it was always, we will get back to you. One call we were told call back in 48 to 72 hours! Is that what you tell an upset customer. Now because this took so long to sort out the special finance rate is going up in interest sooner than planned. 3 weeks to plan a job and show up with the wrong material or lack the info of the job. CJS Dayton office installed a new hot water tank. I am overwhelmed by the wonderful job Josh and Shaun provided. Josh was so knowledgeable and patiently explained everything they were doing. I have a 90 year old house and I know nothing about maintaining equipment. He showed me how to turn off the water to the house as well as the valves directly into the water heater. He gave me maintenance instruction for the new water heater that I did not know how to do. They were clean and careful with my house. If only every technician who serviced my house would be as professional and nice as these two men. read more

They have charged my debit card two years in a row for services not rendered. I had to call multiple times last year to get a refund. And they turned around and billed me again this year for a property I have sold. Do not sign up for a service agreement with them unless you like to pay for nothing. read more

would never recommend. we used CJS as recommended by family member of owners. purchased a brand new AC unit in June 2023. in April 2024, it went out. there was a pinhole leak in the coils. June 2024, it went out again, twice. First a compresser went bad then they forgot to add enough Freon to keep it running. As if all these things should be breaking in a brand new unit. I have spoken with Daijon the ops manager who ensured me he would follow up as all times are of course after hours calls. He never called back or followed up. last week, we called him back as we noted the duct tape was not fixed around the pipes that they removed Allowing air to blow all outside of the duct work. He was going to have someone do a thorough review and QI the system and discuss warranty. came home today with ac not working again. texted Daijon with no response. called answering service at 520pm and was told I'd get a call back tomorrow sometime after 8am. poor customer service, follow though and clearly a janky brand new AC unit that I'm still paying on. read more

Seriously - read the reviews and then read the company response. It will show you exactly how much CJS cares about it's customers. There are quite a few where people are unhappy and CJS thanks the reviewer for a stellar review. CJS installed a Carrier Air Conditioner and a Triangle Tube digital boiler in my home and have maintained them every season since. Chad Green, service person, was here this week to inspect the air conditioning system and was very knowledgeable, personable, Covid conscious and thorough. I am very pleased with the CJS company and the training they provide their staff. read more

This is an update from my last review. We emailed the company and the general manager, Cindy, came out to talk to us about the problem. She was more than professional and understanding and offered us everything she could to remedy the situation. We feel satisfied with how they are trying to make up for the problem we had. We called and explained that our in-slab ductwork was no longer usable and that we needed to reroute overhead. The lady on the phone said that the company does ductwork installation and scheduled an appointment for the next week. A few business days pass before our appointment. My husband was leaving work early to meet them at our house when they call (less than ONE hour before scheduled appointment) to say they don't do ductwork and won't be coming after all. What an unprofessional and inconsiderate action. I will make sure to pass along my experience to anyone looking for HVAC. read more

The tech did a great job, but they charge $128 per POUND of R-22 refrigerant. I would have been OK with paying a REASONABLE price but not 6 times what you can buy it for. NOT HAPPY! will not be using them again or recommending them. read more

Scheduled an estimate for a new furnace in April, 2021. Got a call from the company to re-schedule the appointment (a little inconvenient, but it happens). The technician called to say he would be late (apparently unaware that the company had called to reschedule) but he called 15 minutes AFTER the scheduled arrival time. Multiple calls to figure out what was going on sent me to the answering service who could not answer my questions, only forward my information. Project got delayed, so we needed an updated estimate in December, 2021. Figured we would give them another chance, so we scheduled another appointment. Got an email and a text message from the company confirming the appointment. Rushed home from work on the appointment day to make sure I was there for the technician. No one showed. When I checked my phone I noticed the technician had sent a personal email to confirm the appointment, as well as a text message (neither of which I noticed or could have even answered because I was on my way home from work). Of course, he never showed up. A few days later I called the company to find out what happened. On a 10 minute call, I spent about 7 minutes on hold while being bounced around to three different people. I finally hung up after being put on hold one last time. read more
