I attended VKO Kickboxing for almost a year. Unfortunately, due to personal health reasons, I stopped attending. This is a wonderful community of men and women who not only workout together, but also foster friendships and look out for each other. I am sad to leave because it didn't feel like a workout, but it fell like I was going to hang out with friends and enjoy some BOMB music. I will miss everyone especially the ones that encouraged me to try and do my best. Asha is not just the owner, she is also a trainer. She looks out for us and checks on us if we miss a few times. Somehow while mindlessly scrolling Facebook an ad popped up for a 16 week kickboxing challenge. CHALLENGE, you say?? *side eye smirk* I mean sure, why not? I was just coming out of a 9 year marriage feeling deflated, just blaghh and needed something to motivate me out of my comfort food binging and grey days. First class THEY KICKED MY ARSE INTO NEXT SUNDAY!! lol. But WAIT wait wait. Don't run off scared cause I promise it gets better. Much better. Like friendly staff better. Like no judgement whatsoever better. Like instructors who inspire you better. Like go at your own pace but push yourself better. Like endurance and strength better. Like suddenly don't crave cookies better. Like 15 lbs lost and I can fit all my cute clothes again better. Like BOXING IS SO MUCH FUN kind of better. Oh man, Kels, this all sounds so great! Why only 4 stars? Welllll yes it's awesome but not without it's flaws. Here's a few... I loved one instructor and her program in particular, but because I work nights our schedules only lined up for 2 classes per week. I wish they had more instructors with more afternoon classes, as that would've made it worth the monthly fee and continued membership. The music is VERY repetitive. Would've been nice to have more variety. They mainly stick to one genre with the same songs and that gets old, even slightly annoying for someone like me who's subjected to repetitive music all night at work. Plus not everyone likes that style of music. I get that they need upbeat tunes but you can find that in many other genres too, just sayin! Also small peeve but there were inconsistencies with the number of classes I completed. Every staff member had a different answer. I finally got smart towards the end and asked for a printout so I could count it myself lol. Those things aside, the challenge was well worth it. If you stay consistent and follow a nutritional plan you'll see results, probably make a few friends and HAVE A BLAST pounding away your stress! read more

I joined CKO in the midst of the pandemic when the workouts had to happen outdoors and I saw the dedication that CKO staff had towards ensuring a good workout and making a fun environment. I continued being a member for two years and really enjoyed every workout. I was able to take classes with Asha, Tony, Jennifer, Chris and a couple other instructors but no matter who was leading the class I always ended with a sweaty shirt and a happy heart I couldn't continue because of the distance, but I really miss my workouts. I first joined the gym doing a sixteen week challenge and then a ten week challenge and have decided to stay with it. Every coach/trainer from Asha to Alyssa, Jennifer, Christina, Jimesa and Kofi to Tony are awesome!! They'll push and motivate you. This post might be premature but I am going off my gut and the good vibes-I attended my first class today (which was free) and it was amazing. Tony was thorough, comforting of my new kid nerves, patient as I considered how to make time in my workflow to schedule another class. Asha (the owner /instructor ensured I understood the moves, gave encouragement to take breaks and gentle redirection to keep me safely executing to my ability. The other students (mostly women and a few men) were also friendly, encouraging, kind as I realized this workout was exactly what my body needed and my self confidence longed for. I went to the first class on 1/15/24. I can't remember the name of the young lady that went over all the moves with before joining the others, but she was very nice and patient! Asha was the instructor-OMG, great class but a lot of work for someone that hadn't been to the gym is some years. The class was great, I'm just not in shape! Updated Review- just had my membership canceled and was kicked out supposedly due to being "in the way"! Seriously? Yes, I'm absolutely upset, especially since the accusations are from one coach only and mostly untrue. A member since Spring of 2019 (at almost 1000classes), in 2022, I made the "mistake" of suggesting a change in the music since at that point there were songs I absolutely couldn't stand to hear anymore. This was rudely denied as according to Asha/owner "there are over 40 different playlists". Mind you, those have probably been used since the opening in 2016/2017! (As of 8/8/24 still no changes!)So I chose to use my earbuds in class and after a knee injury also created my own combos as I had to modify or substitute some exercises anyway. (Always making sure to stay within my space around my chosen bag!) This was more or less accepted until April 2024 when CKO moved to a much, much smaller space and coaches still insist on jogging for warmup and during class. There is no space available if you cannot run! It's either warmup on the sidewalk or take a break! Awesome strategy! So I arrived early for my warmup and started my bag work in between the hanging bags to stay out of the way of the joggers as much as possible and still get in my 60 minute workout. Coach Jennifer/owner Asha did not find this acceptable. Go at your own pace-yes, but definitely not "Your Class/Your Time"! To recap-exercise/concept is awesome! IF- you can do the exercises per the coaches instructions or are ok with taking breaks. And IF you don't mind the endless repetitive music (mostly R&B/Hip Hop). read more

I joined a month challenge to see if this workout and location would work for my needs. While I loved the vibe and the workout routines, I wish they had more of the 6am classes during the week to be able to attend more often. I'm taking off two stars because twice I was automatically charged for a month renewal even though I never signed a renewal agreement. The second time it happened, and again I brought it up to the owners attention, she seemed bothered by it as if it had been my fault. I was refunded though, but this just didn't seem right. AND IN RESPONSE TO YOUR RESPONSE, you know very well I NEVER signed up to a 3 month commitment, your system autogenerated a 3 month agreement for me that I never signed and I explained that to you because since then, that just seemed wrong. I explained to you before paying another month I only wanted to sign up for one more month and you were ok with it, so I didn't understand why I was again being automatically charged for another month and why you were bother by it when you were ok with it originally. It features a one hour class led by a trainer guiding you through the different techniques of kickboxing, which have made me stronger and with awesome technique that have given me a confidence I never knew I possessed. I've been a member of CKO Kickboxing South Bay for over seven years and I couldn't be happier! I get such a great workout. CKO has helped me build my endurance, my confidence and I'm so much stronger than when I first started. The coaches are amazing.... We have good laughs while working out, great music selection; each coach plays something different. It's such a positive environment! I injured my knee at work and had to modify things like kicking, jumping and running and and my coaches never had an issue with it... they encourage us to go at our own pace and will root you to the point to where you want to do extra burpees or run faster or hit harder! I have been going there for a little over three years. (Had to stop as I got pregnant in the midst of it) I love the diversity in the gym. It makes me feel welcome every time I go. I also like that the instructors especially Asha and Alyssa meet you were your at. There's no pressure to immediately buy a membership or any of their products which I personally like. (I don't like being pressured or harassed in buying anything like other gyms I've tried) I also love the enthusiasm and personality the instructors bring as they are not just yelling demanding statements like in other places. Always a great time at Club Knock-Out South Bay. My wife and I have been attending classes regularly in the evenings for our "date nights". It brings a tear to my eye when she throws a mean hook. Asha and company bring a tough and solid 1 hour of butt-kicking but you only go as far as you push yourself. In the few months of attending I've seen noticible definition in my upper body/legs/core. There's a great mix of levels with people who've never put boxing gloves on to people who knock the bags off the chain. All are welcome and we've made some good friends there. For sure one of the best decisions I've made for myself in a long time. I love CKO, I'm in the best shape of my life!!! I'm happier, healthier, stronger, leaner than I ever could have imagined, I'm so thankful that I found this place and stuck with the workouts even when they weren't easy.... I was a little over one year post partum, still wasn't feeling like myself after having a baby so I was looking for some "me time." I practiced yoga before baby and had gone to a few studios after baby but something wasn't clicking like it used to. I found a Groupon for CKO, figured I would give it a try and see what happens (I'll be honest I didn't think this would be my jam) little did I know. I went to my first class, which was intense (so intense that I waited over a week to return)yet when I returned the following week I came at a different time with a different instructor and I was hooked. Asha and Alyssa (the owners) are AMAZING, they are very inspiring, challenging, and are big advocates of "go at your own pace" style teaching. I'm so hooked on this place I attend class at least 4-5 times a week!! Which is crazy when I think about it, #cantstop #wontstop. I love this place so much that I even participated in their 10 week challenge and while I lost weight and gained muscle as to be expected, my biggest accomplishment losing over 4% body fat!!! (23.7% to 19.3%) PRO's: -Welcoming environment, like many other people have mentioned in their reviews... the whole staff knows your name. -Go at your own pace style coaching, everyone is welcome at CKO -Every classic different, never get bored with your work-out -Music is up beat, helps the classes fly by -Classes focus on adding on little by little so you never feel overwhelmed or defeated - They have fitness trackers you can purchase and track your effort while you are working out.
