It's a fine pool. Just fine. I've been on the lookout for a nice lap swim pool and have been making my way to all the local city pools, starting with Clairemont. It's a very no-frills spot: small locker room, showers, very minimal seating on the pool deck, and a dedicated 1-3 lanes for lap swim. For $4 for ~2 hours, it's a pretty darn good deal. I will say that the pool isn't in the best condition. You can tell there's been a lot of wear and tear. I also don't love that there are open deep gutters along the permitter, making it difficult to get in/out of the pool. Overall, not a bad pool, but not a great pool. I'm a Girl Scout troop leader, and our troop had planned to go swimming on Saturday 8/19 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. I had stopped by the desk in person to ask someone about this about a month prior. They said that for a group of our size, we should make a reservation. I asked the cost and determined it was too expensive for our troop. I asked if we could just all show up at the same time and pay the admission fee. They said that was fine but that they would appreciate a heads up. So I gave the date and time and told them I'd call again when I had a headcount. I called on 8/11 with a headcount. No one picked up, so I left a message with my name and phone number. I called again on 8/17 and talked to someone. I gave my name and number, a brief run-down of our situation, the date and time we intended to come and a headcount of around 25. The woman was very kind and told me they would have no trouble accommodating our group. I asked if it would be possible for our girls to use the diving board and she said they should have enough lifeguards to supervise that. I arrived 15 minutes early on Saturday 8/19 to find out there was a swim meet going on! They weren't even open to the public at the time I asked about! I called the front desk from my car (because I couldn't find a parking spot) and the person said, "Yeah, so we can't accommodate your group today because we have a swim meet." I was livid! Here I was with 2 little girls in my backseat and 20 other people arriving in 10 minutes, and we had nowhere to swim. The person I talked to kept giving excuses and passing the blame to other people. "We didn't have your number." (Yes you did. I left a message.) "Oh, well, we never got that message." I eventually talked to a manager. I explained the situation. He said that I should have asked to talk to a manager. (I DID talk to a manger when I stopped by the front desk in person.) "Oh, that was probably the other manager. He didn't tell me about it. For a group your size, you really need to make a reservation." (I already explained that our troop couldn't afford the reservation fee. And you could have told us previously that you wouldn't be able to accommodate us without a reservation, rather than misleading us to believe that our troop could go swimming today.) I asked if our group could swim after the swim meet. "No, because we only have 1 lifeguard on duty today. So we can't have more than 25 people in the pool at a time. And we're at capacity." I sent a group message to the troop, the beginning of which read, "I am so, so sorry. I don't know how to say this, but Clairemont Community Pool has kind of screwed us over...." And then I explained everything. Nearly everyone in our troop was either arriving at the pool or on their way when I sent this message. Our troop is a pretty amazing group of people and they were all so understanding and patient. I drove around a bit and called other pools and looked for somewhere else we could swim. Our troop did get to swim at the Swanson Memorial Pool for a few hours. I explained the situation to that pool's staff and they were very kind and helpful. If you're looking for a no-BS, utilitarian pool for aquatic fitness or lap swimming, Clairemont is it. Clean facility, friendly staff, heated outdoor showers. Walk-in ramp and stairs with handrails if you needed disability access to the water. Locker rooms are small but clean. The only downside is tiny parking lot; get ready to park on the street in most cases. Aside from that, this is a great facility for a no-nonsense fitness class or lap swim session. If you're looking for splash pads, sunbathing areas and other frills, look elsewhere. If you're here to churn out some laps, take the kids for swimming lessons, or get in shape in the water fitness class, this pool is it. Check City of San Diego website for most current information as programs/hours can change. Admission is $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for kids, seniors (62+) and disabled folks. Don't bother bringing your kids to this pool, they aren't allowed to do anything fun, literally. No diving toys allowed, no pool noodles, no blow up balls, no floating toys. Nothing. My kids got yelled at for hanging onto each other while swimming. This is why no one comes to this pool. Due to its convenient location, we've been there several times per week at different hours and we are always one of maybe two or three other recreational swimmers. One of the lifeguards told a mother that her kids couldn't have dive toys in the rec swim area, when the mom asked where they could have them the lifeguard said a lap lane would be fine--but in order to swim in a lap lane the kids had to take a swim test that they obviously weren't going to pass (50 freestyle strokes, tread water for 30 seconds, etc.). Plenty of lanes for lapswimming, and I like how deep the pool is. The pool itself seems well-maintained. The locker rooms are old, with no shower/changing rooms available (just two toilet stalls and some benches in a large open space), and I wish they had more hours throughout the year for lapswim, but overall it's a great pool. read more

Attention aquaholics! There's nothing fancy about this pool, but it's a great value for lap swimmers. There are warm outside showers (like beach showers) and very basic locker rooms and bathrooms. Adults are $4 per swim, and kids (15 & under), disabled and seniors are $2. Frequent swimmers can get 10 swims for $30. The pool is a great temperature, not too chlorinated, and has a dedicated parking lot for about 20 cars. Lifeguards are on duty and you can use their kick-boards and pull-buoys. There's also big timing clock. Check the schedule for when kids play water polo and other activities (currently at 2:30pm) as they only have a few lanes open and it gets busy. This pool is small and boring. Recreational swim is only from 12-3 and the lap lanes take up the majority of the pool. No fountains, splash pad or playground. Also there are no chairs! This pool has room for pool loungers but there is only concrete along the side. Had to sit on a bench outside a fence because I didn't pay to swim, I only wanted to lay in the sun. Not good for kids, won't be coming back. read more

We are so fortunate to have a community pool in our neighborhood, and that (in my humble opinion, and speaking to other parents who would know) offers the best swim lessons in town. The rates can't be beat, but quality is not compromised. The pool manager Brad is hard working, knows virtually all of the children coming through his facility via swim lessons, maintains a loyal and good-hearted staff, and shows excellent customer service when given the chance (he is very approachable with concerns). We are grateful for Brad's leadership and for his long-time experience managing a pool and its staff... and even in teaching children (and on up) to be safe in the water. They have the best swim lessons in the City. It's a little tricky to find it when driving. The lifeguards are very respectable and they really get to know their regulars. Its also super cheap!!! read more

Watch out for the lifeguards. They are rude, unfriendly and on-edge. They just yell at people and assume they're doing something wrong.

Life Guards are very rude and yell at people when the should explain the reasoning for pool safety and not just yell at people. it creates bad energy when people are trying to have fun. read more

What I love about their swim lessons is they give the kids goals--a checklist--and no matter what teacher your kids get they always learn. Great system, great pool. read more
