"Secret Oasis in the Heart of San Jose" Well okay, I guess it's not really a secret, but I didn't know about it. After a morning at the San Jose History park, I was looking for a brewery or tap room, and this place fit the bill perfectly. I thought parking might be difficult, but they have their own, generous parking lot. It's not a problem at all. The layout of this brewery is interesting. It's in two parts. The main section is a cozy place with a long bar, and of course, many tables. But then they have a smaller side area that shows movies and has entertainment. It's right next to the brew making equipment. On a warm day, I went for the Kolsch, which was an excellent experience. Crisp and light just, like I wanted it. Special thanks to the wonderful bartender Olivia, as well as the Brewmasters Colin and Liz. Also, Ken from operations was most helpful and gave me a guided tour. It started to rain and the outdoor seating has no tarp or covering. When we arrived it was packed. I'm assuming it's a very popular place. In the area next to it there was a vendor selling old records. The beer was great! I forget which one I had. All I know is I got it in a small cup and it was light colored. The prices are fair. The only thing I didn't like was that it is removed from the nightlife scene of Downtown SJ. I'd have to get an uber if I wanted to go somewhere else and there is no immediate place for food. This place only offers trivial snacks. If you just want a beer and chat with no intention to make it last, this is a great place for that. read more

Fun and relaxing place to enjoy a local beer Place in San Jose we used to come after Covid days. There was a Food Truck next to this place. Parking was a little challenge to find but we were able to drive around a little bit in a residential neighborhood. Inside, there were a few groups of people sitting together and enjoying themselves. Came here as one of my favorite food trucks is parked nearby. I love that they offer outdoor seating, great because I get to bring my dog and relax for a bit. This visit, I got one of their recommended beers. They offer different sizing and this one is a half glass. Tasted delicious and went down smooth and clean, didn't really have a strong taste to it. My husband and I stopped by here on a Thursday evening around 7:45, not knowing it was trivia night. We were confused by the hours posted online (website says they close at 9, Yelp says 10) so we called to check and it's 9:30 as of the writing of this review (November 2023). The brewery was packed but we managed to find a table for two. We brought sandwiches from home, but there was also a food truck there and a lot of people were grabbing tacos and burritos. We settled in and enjoyed our beers while watching the trivia competition unfold. The host was hilarious and all the teams were in it to win it. Very fun atmosphere, even if you're not playing! Service was friendly and we were able to try multiple tastes. I was excited to find a graf beer, which is a beer and cider hybrid. This particular one is called Dark Tower (a nod to a Stephen King novel) and it was delicious. Although I can't remember what my husband got, he liked it as well. Another amazing brewery located in San Jose. Clandestine has both indoor and outdoor seatings. You need to show your COVID-19 vaccination card to be able to sit indoor. Parking is kind of limited but there are plenty of street parking on the side. Clandestine has pretty good selection of beer. My friend got the blueberry one and I could smell the fruit fragrance just by sitting next to them. I got the Triple Agent, quite bitter for me but really refreshing. Nothing beats a hot day better than a glass of cold beer. I do recommend the flight to try different types of beer. This is a good place to hang out with friends and family. Pet and kids friendly. Came here for their Valentine's Day stout event. When the event online said you could mix your own blends, we thought we were literally using a blender to create new flavors. Turns out most of the beers on the menu that day turned into stouts, and you could combine by picking two of them to mix LOL. The space itself is quite big and I like how you can pick your own games and fill your own water. It's right downtown with an attached parking lot. I can see it as a popular spot for coworkers to go for happy hour. The token system was pretty cool. Each one allowed for a tasting pour. You can make your own flight this way. You can also keep the tokens for next time if you don't want to use them all. We didn't catch her name, but the person working was super friendly and helpful in giving suggestions on what to pick. My favorite blends of the night included coffee with peanut butter and coffee with chocolate. Basically the coffee stout was great. We also tried raspberry, vanilla, coconut, the original Milky Way, and a cinnamon stout. I enjoyed the variety of flavors. I would love to come back and try their other types of beers! Great time here last night! Clandestine Brewing was having their annual Oktoberfest celebration, and my friends and I decided to come check it out. Lots of people out & about here on a Saturday night. When I pulled into the parking lot, there was an open spot. Score! Evening is already off to a good start. Some employees were dressed in lederhosen, which added to the whole Oktoberfest theme. They had a few German beers on tap, and I decided to try one of their IPA's. Good service at the bar overall. I like how you can get a half instead of a full pint (or even a taster). With the tasters, I was able to try more beers. I also tried a belgian blonde, which was very tasty. This is one of the many more recent breweries to be added to DTSJ. It seemed like there were none until it was time for me to move... Anyway, this is a clean, no-frills establishment. Except for the "purchase tokens for tastes" bit. That's a bit frilly. But to each their own...there's gotta be some way to keep track of tastes! I'm not even sure they still do this. The beer itself was good, though not great. I can't think of any beers I tried that I loved. Customer service was fine, but we didn't have a chance to connect with the employee working that day because they were talking to some friends, or maybe regular customers. What's cool about this place is that they have a private outdoor seating area, so you can bring your furry family members and not worry about forcing people who may be allergic to sit in a closed room with you! I came here on a night of brewery hopping. I loved the murals on the outside. It's a nice location too, even found street parking. The taproom is nice and the bartender was friendly and welcoming. I only got one beer, the Undercover Berliner Weiss. It was good. I wanted to drink more but I had to drive and didn't want to push my luck. Another awesome local brewery located in San Jose. This location is located near other breweries in case you want to brew hop. They have a pretty decent selection of beers on tap. I ordered the Undercover with Boysenberries. This is definitely on the fruitier side which I do not mind at all. I am a huge fan of sours and fruitier beers and this was very nice and refreshing. This is a kettle sour so if you like sours, I highly recommend getting this drink. Parking was super easy since they have their own parking lot which is super nice to have especially in the downtown area when parking can be a big struggle. They offer both inside and outside seating so it is completely up to you wherever you want to sit. We opted to sit inside since it was a little chilly outside during our visit. They don't have a kitchen and don't serve their own food but you can bring snacks and food from outside. Overall, I would love to try any of the other beers that they have on tap so I would come back. read more

A relaxed family friendly atmosphere with a variety of beer. Clandestine Brewery was my second stop. I came because they had a stop and porter. I'm all about the dark beer. With a name like Dwarf Galaxy you'd expect a milk stout to be creamy and smooth but to my chagrin this stout had a bitter aftertaste. :( Notes of burnt coffee and chocolate turned what could have been a great brew into a so-so brew. Whether this was a bad batch or their normal I'm not sure because I'm only in town for the day. Hoping it's the former. At 3.7% the alcohol content is a bit lower than most stouts. But what this brewery has going for is atmosphere. Great tunes and large family style tables leading to conversation and game playing. So I'm willing to come back again for a trip with Dwarf Galaxy. read more

To be honest, I didn't really like the beers here that much, but I'm rounding to 4 stars because the service was good, I always like supporting local breweries/businesses, and they had a really good Venezuelan food truck outside, so they have good taste, LOL. The beer selection is really unique. I saw on Yelp that they used to have mango lassi/matcha beers, though neither of those were available when I visited a few weeks ago. I tried: the two Finnish-style sahnis, frères belges (a Belgian blonde), Witsec (a Belgian wit), and Agent Provocateur (a doppelbock). Belgian beers are my favorite and I also love doppelbocks, so I was kind of disappointed that I wasn't impressed with any of them. I do like how this brewery has a lot of beers that aren't common, because it seems like everywhere else just has a lot of IPAs haha. I hadn't even heard of Finnish-style sahnis before, so it was really interesting to hear the bartender explain it, and they were pretty decent. I'd still recommend checking this place out. read more

Poor Management good beer. Take lawn chairs I drank some of the Double IPA in a giant 32 ounce can in the asphalt parking lot while waiting over an hour for a table. They have 9-10 outdoor tables with NO heat lamps. They cannot extend patio since they don't serve food. Inexperienced hostess. Empty tables for 35-40 minutes while the hostess was busy calling customers who had left. Need 2 hostesses for a food truck night. Or a different table waiting texting system. Hostess buried in the phone calling people who had left. She encourages people to leave to taste at other breweries while they wait? "This is part of a beer trail." She gives them up to 15 minutes to return. Bartender also gave attitude when I complained. 4 tables were open for more than half hour. 2 tables were open for 45 minutes. Hostess blamed COVID. She never offered to split our party of 5. Although we did. The only reason we went was to eat the Lobster food truck. Wish we would have just taken lawn chairs. read more

First time being to this brewery and I really enjoyed it! I found out about this brewery from a vegan junk food pop up event I had seen on Facebook. I'm not much of a beer girl, but they also had hard seltzer on tap. I tried the Butter Rum Pecan and the Apricot Mango flavors. Both were absolutely delicious and i was quite impressed. The food was from a separate vendor(and i guess they have different ones all the time) called Venture foods. I had their vegan chili fries and fried corn. Super yummy! The bartender was friendly, but wasn't able to give me any further info on the seltzers such as calories or sugar content. It was kind of a small place, but they have indoor seating as well as outdoor seating. Lots of people brought their dogs too which is always cute. :) I wanted to take some seltzer to go in growlers, but the bartender told me that those are the only ones that can't be to go. If you want to purchase tasters, it's probably best to purchase 6 tokens for $12. You purchase the tokens first, then can use them to "pay" for the tasters. Note, some of the beers (mostly stouts/scotch ale types) that have an asterisk will cost two tokens. They had a few small snack items available, but they also had a food vendor onsite on Saturday. I liked that they had a ton of board games available, and a partially covered outdoor patio area. I would go back with friends to hang out and play board games. Parking can be tough- they have a small lot available, but not much street parking if the lot is full. read more

My husband went with the graf, which he enjoyed as well. He thought it was quite unique. They have a bunch of games in their extended seating area. A laid-back, fun place to get your brew on, I can't be Clandestine about my appreciation for this place! In town visiting a friend for his birthday, his cousins took me to the brewery to sip on some local beer, which I was excited about since I hadn't been to any San Jose breweries before. I tried several samplers and liked their system of giving one token per sampler so that if you don't want to get all your beer at one time, you can save unused tokens for a future visit. I tried three beers, and liked all of them, and my friends enjoyed their beer as well. There is a large menu on two TV screens above the counter and plenty of seating as well. Their bathroom was clean and they have some board games for those looking to linger a while and get there game on. I have been waiting over a YEAR for Clandestine to open up! AND FINALLY I'm just over the moon they're up and running again. There are a few things I feel as a customer and beer enjoyer that Clandestine could improve on, such as ambiance and service, but after a while their beers will gather more of a loyal crowd. I wasn't a big fan of the Zero Day Session IPA I tasted (strange because I'm an IPA gal), but I did love the seasonal pumpkin porter (Great Pumpkin Porter) which was not heavy on the pumpkin at all. Very nice. The main issues I have with Clandestine is that the signage and directions on Google Maps should be improved. I met up with a fellow beer gal here, and she got completely lost driving on 1st street because she was on the wrong side of the street. I think 2nd street might be a better address point because you can just turn into the parking lot AND you have full view of the awesome beer mural of Clandestine. Just a tip. Also, I love how they had a Mexican food truck (great for those who need to eat) because Clandestine is a microbrewery and only does beers. We ate before, so that wasn't a problem. The restrooms are clean and there are lots of long tables and bar seating for a variety of groups. HOWEVER, the lack of music coupled with the non-homey feeling with an absence of board games or a TV for background noise really made the beer drinking experience kind of awkward. There's nothing I love more than enjoying a beer in silence by myself, but if I'm out socially drinking then at least it should be a semi-fun experience! Lighting was kind of strange and the stock paper walls didn't make us feel like we wanted to stay long. There are outdoor seats for those with children or dogs, but not too much space for multiple parties. Lots to work on, I'd say about Clandestine. But great potential! Keep it up!
