Last weekend we attended the Lewiston Garden Festival. It was there that we met Eastern Monarch…read moreButterfly Farm. They had a booth that was an instant attraction for our kids. Included in their set-up was a screen room full of big, beautiful monarchs, feasting on their fave milkweed. There was also a small net enclosure on their counter with a big, fat colorful caterpillar inside. Caterpillars are the only bug I wish I could snuggle with--this guy was just TOO CHUBBY AND CUTE! But I digress. :-P The booth was manned by Eastern Monarch's staff (maybe the owners?), who could not have been friendlier and more engaging for our kids. They shared with us interesting info about monarchs, their flight path, what they like to eat, and the importance of propagating monarch-attracting indigenous plants in our area. Our son asked what the "brown dots" were in the caterpillar enclosure, and we also learned that caterpillar poop is called frass. So that was a fun fact for our ten-year old son! :-D For sale were mature and healthy milkweeds that were planted in eco-friendly self-composting containers. It was Father's Day, my dad has a nice garden, these butterfly people were way cool, so I purchased one of the plants for my dad's yard. For $20, it was a solid investment and a little bit of support for this lovely eco-forward local business. When we got the plant home, my dad LOVED it, and can't wait to bring more monarchs to Cheektowaga! :-D If you check out Eastern Monarch Farm's website, you will see that they are very involved in the community, and offer a variety of outreach programs for youth and more. If you are looking for an educational program of this nature, and/or you want to purchase butterfly-attracting plants that support our area's local eco-footprint, you absolutely cannot go wrong with supporting this sweet local business.

I was pretty excited to have something new to check out this Holiday season instead of the Festival…read moreof Lights at Hamburg Fairgrounds. Especially when I read how large this event was supposed to be. Unfortunately I was hugely disappointed!! They claim to have zillions of lights yet the main display is one light board that displays Disney characters (poorly) and plays Disney music. Other than that, there really wasn't much. Some lights in some trees and some lights around the buildings-- very standard and not that impressive. I was under the impression it was a synchronized light show and I've seen more impressive displays for free! The reindeer food? You have to make it yourself! Just oatmeal and glitter in a ziplock bag. Not cute, not fun. Not something I would want to sit down and do as an adult and there wasn't much space so if you were bringing a child, you might have to wait for their turn to make some reindeer food. Santa was shoved back into a tiny corner, I couldn't even see him. The whole thing seemed very disorganized and awkward. No one was directing people or trying to get people to partake in the few activities they did have. Roasting marshmallows was kind of nice but once again, no one really there to keep an eye on things. As mentioned before the sticks are reused and all the food is pretty much just left sitting out. We didn't buy a train ticket because we were told you had to have a child. (Seems odd.) But I also don't like that you have to pay more to be able to see the majority of the lights. $10 to see less lights than I could in my own neighborhood. Definitely pass on this one!!

Remember the Festival of Lights in the Falls back in the day? That's what I was hoping for and it was just overpriced and not so great.
