Clarks is basically a very good store with good selection. Their prices are a bit higher than the big box stores, but they are locally owned so I'm willing to support them with my business. The lower rating is because the fellow who works at the Lomas store in fish my be one of the most arrogant people I have ever met. I used to get all my fish and supplies there, but we stopped going. I've had aquariums for over 40 years, and been a steady customer. They don't recognize me after all this time and take the attitude. I don't know what I am doing before even talking to me. I know they want to give good advice and service but perhaps they could talk to their customers a bit and find out if they have experience before talking down to them. read more

I have to first start out by saying I am a lizard mom, so my only encounters with this store have been for that reason. With that being said, I love coming here. The staff are usually readily available to help with any questions I have, and if they don't have the answer, they find someone who does. The reason I didn't give a higher score is because Clark's tends to be out of stock of some of the exotics materials I'm usually in need of. Which is where my biggest piece of advice comes from: ALWAYS CALL BEFORE YOU COME! Ask what's in stock first, before you make the trip. I do have to say though, their large crickets are actually LARGE! I have been to Petco many times when Clark's is out, and I get charged double the amount, for wayyyy smaller crickets. These owners have to be the greediest people ive come across. I went in there ( menaul) to get something and i noticed a bird cage. The price was $1000. I found the same one on amazon with FREE SHIPPING INCLUDED For $638.00. This isn't the first time I've noticed price is outrageous. It's literally on everything. Some items are tripled. They had a umbrella cockatoo for sale for $7000! Thats INSANE. $1000 to $3000 is average. A little sun conure for $2000 Are you kidding me? The average is $400-$500. Friendly and helpful staff in a local business. While I have had a few issues over the course of the 20 or so years I've been buying from Clark's it's typically things like crickets being out due to supply issues. They may be a little more than some of the other pet stores but you get employees that actually have some knowledge about the care needed for the various things being sold. Overall a great store that you should absolutely frequent if you have any interest in animals, especially exotics. read more

I will say this store has alot of good items BUT I gave them a couple chances buying mealworms from them. The first time I got the 100 size container. It was obviously short. I thought ok maybe a fluke. I didn't open the container to check. The second time I didn't check because I thought the first time was a fluke and I tend to trust. The 2nd time when I got home and I checked almost half of the 100 were dead. I am not happy and will not go back. I don't like spending money on dead food for my pets. I feel like they knew what they were doing giving me these defective products. Twice in a row? Not nice!! I will never trust that way again. I do not expect this from local business. This was my first visit to Clark's and might be my last! First a girl started to help me, by bagging the feeder fish that I requested. She offered to take them to the front, but didn't come back to fulfill my other requests! When she finally returned, she was helping another customer. After a young man finished bagging fish for another customer he proceeded to finish my order. He was not exactly attentive. I asked for 2 mystery snails and 4 African cichlid fry. They don't let you see the bags, they just take 'em to the register. The cashier rang me up and put the fish bags into a brown paper bag. I didn't know until I made it home (100 MILES AWAY) that while they charged me for the 4 fish, I only received 3! I was ripped off! PLUS I received and paid for 3 snails, when I only asked for 2. All around, the staff isn't as polite as they could be.They are entirely inefficient in serving their customers with either speed or accuracy. And I ended up paying for more than I received. While there was a good variety of fish and other animals to choose from at reasonable pricing, I am NOT impressed by the service and would NOT recommend to friends and family. read more

Not very friendly or helpful as the Clark's on Lomas. Went to pick out some crawlers and the refused to let me see where they're housed, like they are hiding the fact they don't take care of them... The other location will take you to the back and the staff is pretty nice. read more

I went here to look at finches. They had a good variety of all kinds of birds. They also have lots of supplies. In the back they have fish, snakes, frogs, spiders lizards, and lots more. Very friendly and knowledgeable! read more

I went to this Clark's right after going to the one on Lomas, just to see which one was better and I preferred this one. I liked the layout a little better, as they gave a separate room for fish and another for reptiles outside of the main store room. For some reason it seemed to me that the prices were more reasonable at the Clark's on Menaul. They had a few less fish, but a slightly better selection of lizards. Their reptile section had the first healthy Ackie (spiny tailed monitor) I've seen in a pet store and if it had been a few years ago, I would have bought it. Also, their baby bearded dragons had better coloration than the other Clark's. The cage accessories were fairly priced and a little different than you see in most other stores. When I went into the store there were less people shopping than the other Clark's and I was able to talk to an employee, who was very helpful. Overall, I'd rank this store either #1 or #2 of the reptile stores in Albuquerque. read more

I like Clarks, but they're going to be extinct unless they up their game. People aren't above driving across town to a big box store to save a few bucks, plus, they have some annoying practices that are old school of the uncool variety. They still use those sticky price tags on each item, rather than putting the prices above the item on the shelf or on a price holder. Annoying because you have to flip or turn the item, rather than just looking at the selection of goods and quickly ascertaining their prices. Also, there are some thing they need to do to make check out faster. Move the Pet ID tag out from behind the counter and get the type that customers can do themselves. Put the crickets, meal works and whatever else on the floor, and have sales persons out there who can help people. All that stuff behind the counter looks junky, and ends up holding up the check out. I'd rather go to PetSmart or PetCo, but most of the time I don't feel like going across town. So Clark's it is, and I rarely get out of there without seeing a huge line, and clerks scurrying for bugs. read more

Only place in town you should go for all your pets needs!! They are very knowledgeable about the brands and product they carry. I love their customer rewards program on their dog Food. It's always nice to get a free bag after buying so many!! They have a nice selection of fun unique blingy dog and cat collars! Some prices on things seem a little over priced but the quality of their products speak for themselves. They sell stuff for all critters, dogs, cats, mice, birds, fish, rodents. My one stop shop for all my critter needs. The staff is more knowledgeable than the big box stores and friendlier. I think the prices are better too. If you buy crickets, like I do, come to either location because they have a "cricket card" system where you prepay for cricks (at a lower rate) and just need to show the card to get hooked up. They have bulk food that is cheaper than buying prepackaged. I get my dog treats and my kid's rat chow in bulk and save $$! I think the Lomas store has a bit more selection of exotic pets, but this store has a better selection of tarantulas. I got a mature female b. smithi for 100 bucks and they threw in a p. murinus sling for free. Helluva deal! Come here for your pet's needs and support local businesses. read more

Great store. Very helpful with all kinds of our pond and fish needs. We are currently sans mammals of the furry kind in our home, so the only pets we have to care for are the koi goldfish that came with the pond in our backyard. Not as huggable as a cat, but fun to watch and very minimal care required. We have had weird algae issues, problems with the filter, etc. We sometimes go to an actual pond store, but it's way on the other side of town, and frankly, Clark's usually has what we need. They are extremely helpful and friendly, and will walk you to the spot you are looking for, make sure you understand the products available, and generally take care of you while you are there. Questions are welcome and answered thoroughly. We often buy fish food from Clark's, and someday I hope we will be able to buy cat food as well. Once we need that, Clark's will definitely be a regular pitstop! read more

OK, I am a bonified regular at this place, they know me...I spend around $40 a month for our pets (snake, fish, dog, rabbit, birds) and often have to make returns which they give me no hassle about, ever! The staff is knowledgeable about whatever you need, if the particular specialist isnt in, they'll tell you to try back when they can help. This is much better than guessing just to get a sale. Although this Clark's is clear on the other side of town for me, it is where I buy food for our cats, and my first point of reference for other kitty supplies. It is more expensive than big box stores but is worth the expense, especially since I can't find the food at the bigger places. Clark's has a great variety of food for cats and dogs and only once, when our oldest cat needed some super-specialized food, have I not been able to find something suitable. Although Clark's has a small section of their storeroom devoted to a cage-free cat shelter and holds adopt-a-thons for cats and dogs every Saturday, they do not sell the cats and dogs. An independent no-kill organization takes applications for adoption and charges an adoption fee. Two of our three cats lived in Kitty City before we adopted them. The clerks there are friendly and helpful. Although I do not know much about birds/fish/pet-type rodents/reptiles, the staff seems to know quite a bit about them, given what I've overheard while hanging around Kitty City. Overall I highly recommend Clark's, and especially the Menaul location, to anyone who looking for quality pet products, especially those which are hard to find. read more

This is a great local business! The staff is always very friendly and extremely attentive. They are always knowledgeable about every product they carry and can answer any question. The stores also carry a great selection of quality products that are great to choose from at different price points. If I have ever encountered a problem with a product they have been very helpful in finding an alternative. I arrived at 6:59 yesterday and the store closes at 7, not only was the door still open (most stores close their doors before closing time or will lock the door as they see you walking up) but their personable staff welcomed me in and helped me find what I needed. I love coming to Clark's! Originally we started coming here for our cat's food (toys, treats, etc.) and then when I got a golden retriever puppy it got even better. Now we can get all our pet supplies here for the cat and dog at the same time, and the puppy loves coming with me! She even enjoyed looking at the cats in the back through the window, it was so cute. They have a large selection of food and treats, and even nylabones for dogs. They also have a massive wall of collars, leashes, and harnesses that aren't in packages so you can try them on for size. Lastly, the employees are all super-normal, super-nice animal lovers, unlike the total creeps at Petco. I can't stand going to Petco anymore, it's so weird in there and people are always training their dogs through the isles. Clarks is amazing, definitely come and check it out! read more

Never had a problem with this place, really. I go in mostly to get food for my reptiles (frozen mice, rats, and occasionally dog food). I often take time to wonder around and have a look at the animals as well while I'm there. Everything is kept pretty clean, the fish tanks (especially the large saltwater tank) are beautiful. There's a nice selection of things to look at for somewhat reasonable prices. Also THANK GOD for an establishment that has frozen feeders and not just live ones. I've only had one instance where the frozen ones were a bit off. One of the rats I purchased was nearly cut in half and was... quite more of a gross experience than I normally deal with. Though that never occurred again so I'm just writing it off as a fluke. I haven't purchased any actual animals from this establishment so I'm not too confident at that front. However I do plan on maybe making a purchase in the future, so I'll make sure to give this post an update once I do. Otherwise, a nice little pet store that while not as massive as giant chain stores as Petsmart and Petco, do have a far less depressing atmosphere when it comes to just looking at what pets are on the premises. (It's nice to see that some of the herps are actually housed properly and not all stuffed into one tiny tank like at the big chains.) I've not experienced any issues with the staff on my visits, they're quick to get me what I need, checkout is painless, and they're often wondering around to see if anyone needs help. read more

Clark's is the best place to go for any pet needs you have. They have a large selection for every pet. For being a local business, their prices are actually really good! I never feel ripped off going to Clark's like I sometimes feel going to other pet stores. It's clean and the store layout flows really well. My favorite thing about Clark's is their employees! They are always super nice and willing to help with anything they can. Scott works in dog food and helped me pick a food for my new dog. The food instantly made her coat soft and shiny! She also doesn't have gross dog farts like she did with other dog food. I was so happy with his recommendation! It's obvious they spend their time really learning about what is best for the animals. Clarks seriously needs to do some cleaning. It smells AWFUL.I do realize it is becuase of the rodents but it smells of urine. Clean the cages, freshen up the store it looks stuck in the 80's and no one seems to care. Some of the staff is very aloof, although one of the guys carried my dog food out to my car and offered a discount because of the inconvenience of construction right at the entrance. Someone with some skin in the game needs to go check out long leash on life. Professionally run, locally owned and CLEAN. Probably not a fair comparison because they do not house rodents. read more

I popped in to see if they had food suitable for doves (if you buy mixed food, the doves tend to reject most of it...by tossing seeds EVERYWHERE), and not only did they have exactly what we needed, they had a locally sourced option that was super fresh. Who knew that they grow dove food in Edgewood? (Compared to the seeds from national chains, you can tell that these were glossier and had a better color.) The staff were friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. I really enjoyed the experience, and I'll never buy bird food from a big chain again. read more

It feels like walking on to a used car lot or a creepy furniture store. They use ear pieces and walkie talkies to notify people in the other room that a customer is headed their way. My 2 year old boston terrier had been having a hard time finding a food that agreed with his sensitive stomach. I tried several brands of dry dog food that my vet and other pet stores recommended and nothing worked. One day I decided to stop by Clarks to see what they had to offer. A sales associate kindly greeted me as I was aimlessly wondering the aisles. I mentioned to him the issues my pup was having and he suggested a perfect brand of dog food for my allergy prone dog. Since then (2 years) my dog has not eaten any other brand of food. His coat is smooth and rarely has allergies.
