I've been fish keeping for nearly a decade and buy a lot of my fish from Clark's. The stock is generally in okay shape and they have a good selection. However, my encounters with employees have been very hit or miss. Maybe because I'm a young woman, they often assume I know nothing about fish. During my most recent trip, the employee helping me was very condescending. While lecturing me about things I already know, he also gave me several pieces of misinformation about basic fish care. I should have corrected him, but I felt uncomfortable and just wanted to get my fish and go. After this interaction, I decided to get my next fish from an online retailer. Disappointed because I would rather shop local, but I don't want to deal with these kinds of interactions anymore or buy from a store with misinformed employees. read more

I've been coming to Clark's for years, specifically I go pretty much monthly to pick up food for my giant son. Clark's is the only place in town I have been able to find Fromm's brand pet food. They also support a rewards program so every 12th (or 11th?) bag is free and that definitely helps when you're feeding human sized dogs. The brand I get is super good quality and I highly recommend it because we have never had any issues and I have yet to come across any recalls. Going in and grabbing one specific item is definitely no big deal. However, the customer service can be inconsistent. Sometimes the staff are super friendly and helpful, other times not so much. Most of my experiences have been neutral or positive though. The only bad experience I ever had was when I brought my pup in to get a harness and one of the employees kind of manhandled him in a way that was not okay with me. He was still a pup at the time and high energy but it wasn't necessary, that employee appears to no longer be around. They have a pretty good selection of other items and I always support local when I can. Plus, it's always fun to look at the tiny critters even though I definitely don't need one. read more

Prices are high here, but they have been here for years and are surviving. They do support a lot of employees, each and every one of which will ask you at least once if you need help. It's an old dusty pet shop and needs renovation. Animal areas are crowded and maze-like, on the dirty side but not stinking. Pet selection is little below average for a LPS. No cats or dogs, no exotics here. They have a closet full of birds but only one parrot, rodents including rabbits, ferrets, fresh and salt water fish, tarantulas, reptiles including a pond full of full-sized turtles, only a handful of snakes and lizards, and even fewer amphibians including poison dart frogs and axolotls. They do have TONS of pet food and supplies. I guess if you can afford it, Clark's beats wasting money at a chain store. read more

I have been a customer at Clark's for a number of years. I like shopping local, and my family buys a lot of our pet supplies at their stores. We have been buying insects for our reptiles for about six years. However, I have finally decided to complain about a problem relate to the insects: I purchase pin heads and small crickets on a regular basis, and the employees always fail to count the crickets accurately. I always end up with 1/2 to 2/3 of the number of crickets I pay for.When I bring this up with the employees they insist that I am wrong even thought I can count as well as they can. I cannot imagine what Clark gains from short changing their customers. The problem is not even the cost: it's that I actually NEED the number of crickets I ask for. I have tolerated this for a long time given my desire to support these local stores. But I am now seeking a different supplier for feeder insects, and will encourage other reptile owners to do the same. read more

I do not and will not shop at chain pet stores and highly recommend you do research on how those larger stores with lower prices treat the animals. The staff at these chain pet stores typically are not taught about care and little to no research has been done by the corporate office on current care practices for the animals and in many cases the recommendations they make are actually harmful to the animals. I've been going to Clark's for about as long as I've been keeping exotic animals, the staff is fairly well informed, they keep the pets in reasonable enclosures that are pretty close to what you'd want as a permanent enclosure. In most cases they have a good understanding of care for the animals and they're local which matters to me. I will happily pay a little bit more to both support local small businesses but also for better recommendations from people that actually care about your pet and proper care for it. read more

Ripoff store..after finding a Beta fish tank (3.5 gal) on Amazon for $40, I thought, shop local, so drove across town to Clark's. Beta fish tank ( 2.5 gals) $120.00..yep 3 times as much, both had light, filter, cover ect. I asked store employe why so much, he only could shake his head and say " yeh that's a lot for a small tank" I walked out thinking that the owner must think we are all too dumb to shop online. It's rare to find a nice, big pet shop anywhere in the country. Most of the nice ones are very small and most of the big ones are pretty crummy. Clark's Is an exception to that rule. I visited this amazing shop last week week and was absolutely blown away by the knowledge and dedication of the workers I spoke to. Not only was the shop clean, well-lit, and well arranged, but they offered a ton of pets and pet supplies. For example, the fish section was huge, with a big selection of both freshwater and saltwater fish. The saltwater section also had various invertebrates, corals, anemones, etc. Everything looked healthy. One particularly helpful worker was Chris, manager of the reptile department. Chris' military and business experience literally saved the department, which was slated to close down before he intervened and infused new life into this fantastic section of the store. Most of the time I was here, I felt like I was in a zoo instead of a pet shop. In my experience, that says a lot about a store's integrity. This is clearly the finest pet shop in New Mexico, and perhaps in the entire southwest. I am a fan! read more

I've been to both of their stores and they're more like a zoo than a pet store. My kids were interested in some snakes, their is signs that say not for sale. We were looking for African cichlids, seems like all the aquariums say not for sale. Ended up going to Petsmart and Petco bought my kids two snakes and spent over $400 in fish. A pet store is a retail business, they need to learn that all things are for sale and if you're not going sell them take them home. I don't go to pet stores to walk and see I go too pet store's to buy. read more

"Buy 12 bags and get the 13th bag free". That's what they tell you when you sign up for their awards program. I've been buying overpriced dog food at Clark's for months figuring it would balance out once I got the free bag worth $83. What they don't tell you is you must buy 12 bags of the same brand. I went in to buy a bag of puppy food and the clerk said that I'd have to start over on rewards since it was a different brand. I went elsewhere and purchased the puppy food at a more reasonable price. I'll go back to Clark's only to get my free bag, then I'll go to Simply Diego's for friendlier service and better prices. Me and my boyfriend(two young minorities ) recently went in because we were shopping for a habitat for our new bearded dragon after about 10 minutes of looking around we went to grab a basket as I'm walking to get a basket immediately all workers followed us as if we were about to run out. We were asked about 5 times if we needed help after we stated no thank you we are getting info we need from a family member. After our cart was FULL and walked to the front to pay we noticed ALL EMPLOYEES guarding the door literally the one guy was standing infront of door with his arms crossed and other workers behind and infront of him. That made us so uncomfortable because we weren't there to steal at all the discrimination that we felt was INSANE!!!!. Not to mention the short haired lady that constantly gave us dirty looks everywhere we went in the store. So no I do not recommend shopping here if you are minority, Also we used my boyfriends military discount and only got 5% off which usually is 10% everywhere we go . If i could give no stars I would but unfortunately I have to give 1 to post a review. read more

I love coming to this Clark's. They are always so friendly and helpful. They have some excellent animals and they always look very taken care of. We buy our dog food from them in order to support local business over Petsmart or Petco. I actually ordered 20 beta fish from here for my wedding, used them as centerpieces at The Shark Reef Cafe at The Aquarium, and gave them out to guests. The fish were beautiful and our fish is still alive and doing great! I like bringing my son here because he can look at the animals close up. It's almost better than taking him to the zoo! I've been coming to this store religiously over the entirety of my experience in ABQ, 18 years. Clark's has provided carriers, wet and dry food, toys and litter boxes for five different cats, one of which had a litter of her own and in turn those kittens became Clark's consumers. The local love never ends, I guess. Never in all of that time have I found a rude or uneducated employee, and that's saying something. Management obviously filters the job seeker pool to highlight people who care a little bit too much about pets, piercings and punk rock: my kind of crew. The store is clean and just a smidge crowded, which humanizes it from their chain brethren. The pet selection is comparatively massive, with all sorts of amphibians and slithery things, fuzzy bunnies and critters for kids, the most exotic fish selection I've seen in town, and squawky, curious birds. For some time this location housed cats, but I believe their policy changed when--surprise--they found a more humane option to showcase the animals. I'll end this on that humane thread. The other day I dragged my two year-old through the aisles of Target for the better part of an hour, something I didn't enjoy and she really hated. So when we finished, as a treat I took her to the PetMartMegaChain across the street. We enjoyed it. But when I finally hunted down an employee to get some information about a particular animal, the guy essentially threw up his hands and said, "Go to Clark's". It would only stand to reason, therefore, that the pets at PetMartMegaChain aren't treated, or even sourced, in a similarly humane environment. read more

I love Clark's so much that I am actually struggling to find the proper words to describe it. Is it really a pet store, or is it something much more? I've been coming to Clark's since I was a child, and although my mom would go there to buy food, I was there to look at all of the animals, to visit their AWESOME and vast aquariums, to pet the baby bunnies, look at the birds, and find general happiness until my mother would force us to leave. As an adult, Clark's is different for me. It's still the magical place I was when I was a kid, but I find myself perusing the isles with my pup for dog food, dog treats, and dog toys. Although, I do still reserve time at the end of my trip to take Max to look at the fish and terrariums I find myself lost in the huge selection of toys and treats instead of the new animals. By this point in my life I KNOW I do not need guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, ferrets, birds, hedgehogs, bunnies, or any other animal Clark's may have at some point in time, but it is always fun to look. Clark's customer service is unbeatable. Everyone is knowledgable in the products they sell and the animals they serve. It really is a store for your pet by people who love your pet almost as much as you do. I really really love this place, and so does Max! read more

Clarks is a very nice store and they keep their animals in good kit but something about their service just ticks me off. For one, their hours are absolutely for the birds ... On Sunday, they close at 5, the next day it closes at 6, then they close at 8 and then back to 6! Super confusing and there are only the two Clark's and neither one is convenient to me so on more occasions than I can count, I end up watching them close the doors on me! This is especially aggravating when they know I have a "cricket card" which means I've already paid in advance so they don't even have to open the cash register the service me. So I told them that like "listen, I just need crickets and you've already taken my money. I don't need a cash transaction just check off my cricket card" and it was five minutes after they close so they're like "nope, sorry we can't help you." That does not sound like a mom-and-pop store to me! That sounds like Petco and I pay the higher prices so that I don't have to shop at a big box store but you know when I hear things like that I kind of feel like maybe I should just go to shop at Petco if I trusted their materials (which I don't) especially the health of their animals but what can I do? They get their new cricket deliveries on Tuesdays and Fridays but God forbid if you show up on a Monday or a Thursday; 10 times out of 10 you will hear "oh sorry, we're out of crickets." Why don't they stock their crickets as their customers demand them. Then there are even Tuesdays and Fridays when you show up and they tell you, "Sorry, we didn't receive crickets today." So I'll say "Today is Tuesday/Friday. Why not?" And they'll respond with some dumb excuse that means nothing to my hungry pet. So then I ask them why they don't announce this news on their social media accounts and they just laugh like it's meant as a joke. And I'll follow that up with what I just told them for what must be the 5th time by now, "no, I'm dead serious. That way your long time regular customers like me who drive to this area of the city for one reason only: to buy crickets don't end up wasting an hour of their day." But luckily Desert Reef Exotics on Eubank managed to properly stock their store and had 50 large crickets. I may start going there more often. read more

Although I voluntarily gave Psi, my ball python, to a classmate last month because he needed a better home, I frequented this place and Petland for Psi's living and feeding needs. As a brand-new snake owner, I had to get a lot of help/advice, and it was hit-or-miss. Sometimes snake-knowledgeable staff was there, and sometimes they all were gone. Their rats run on the small side too: I ordered several medium-sized rats that looked, well, anorexic. However, I intend to visit Psi in a few months and will probably bring him a "treat" from this place. By the way, he loves his new place and has completely forgotten about me. My classmate already owns several ball pythons, so Psi has a friend and a few girlfriends as well! read more

Really vast selection of pet care needs. My boyfriend and i went there to get a feeder rat for our Boa.. unfortunately they didn't have a wide selection of sizes for us to choose from, but the one we got still did the job. The staff was helpful and could easily be found around the store. I browsed around a bit while the lady got us our rat and noticed the cages for the reptiles were realllllly dirty. I didn't put much thought into it, but it was still pretty gross. Overall, though, it seemed like a decent place to get any pet supplies you need. read more

It really is sad what happened to Clark's. For years it was the community go to for pets and supplies. Friendly, helpful staff, crazy smart pet specialists and fair pricing on hard to find supplies. Now it's like the the rude, rip-off version of Clark's. I can overlook someone having a bad day, but I gotta agree with other posters about their snarky and apathetic staff. The buyer for Clark's should be fired immediately or at least according to the female manager I spoke with. I returned a pair of dog nail clippers when I saw I had been overcharged. The manager told me I had not been overcharged...$31.59 was the correct price! When I questioned the 350% markup on the identical item listed on Amazon at $8.95 the manager said it just depends on what we buy it for. Unbelievable!! Your buyer is a complete moron if they are paying 200% retail! Clark's if that pathetic excuse is the best you can offer for shamelessly robbing your community you absolutely deserve to go out of business. Has everything you could need for your pet, but with better quality then the chain stores. The staff is highly knowledgeable and super friendly. My cat was recently sick and the staff seriously saved her life with their expert advice. I love Clark's and will continue to shop here and support this wonderful local business! I've been going to Clark's for over a decade and loved pumping money into the local ABQ economy regularly shopping there. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable; they all treated their customers with respect and appreciation. I would have to be blind to have missed when Clark's traded hands. The changes came quickly, the headsets, the increased staff and of course the price hikes. However all the original staff remained, so I continued to shop there. Suddenly, one day I stop in and EVERYONE from the old staff (that I might add made Clark's so great) had been dismissed! When I asked the new staff about it, I was only told "I don't know, I'm...uh...new here..." with the nervousness of a busted adolescent with his mom's minivan. Even with the increased staffing and the ridiculous headsets, to say customer service has tanked would be an understatement. I have stood in line with a 50 lb bag of pet food in my arms, a line of 11 customers behind me and the cashier chooses this moment to discuss with the person she is ringing up how to join the cricket club. This sales pitch continued for more than 5 minutes and eventually the cashier vacated her register to take the customer to the cricket vault. Four customers just dumped their items and walked out the door. When I brought this to the (new) manager's attention, she just shrugged it off. Shopping local is key to keeping the economy strong and I regularly vote with my money, so I decided to give the (New) Clark's more chances. However (New) Clark's consistently delivered the same dismal service: I would walk into a group of staffers leaning on stacks of pet food, chatting up their weekend plans while 2 feet away I was attempting to load two 50 lb bags of pet food into my cart. Come on guys, if you want to sell your items for a premium price, you need to rethink your customer service. While I can't expect your staffers to be remotely as knowledgeable or experienced as the original Clark's staff -- I do expect a basic display of respect and attentiveness when I shop. At the very least make the environment more like a business and less like a high school cafeteria. read more

Probably one of the rudest staff I've encountered in awhile. I knew what I needed, which you have to go to the counter to buy. I asked for what I needed but they couldn't hear me and proceeded to make it seem like I didn't know what I was talking about. I even tried to make a joke to lighten the mood and they just stared at me. The cashier with dreadlocks was the most rude. Talking down to customers and treating them like they are dumb isn't the way to do business. Gossiping behind the counter, not focused on work at all. Being a manager myself made it really hard to look past this visit and not share the information. read more

Wow! My daughter was interested in freshwater fish for her new fish tank so we wandered over to the area where they do the saltwater and the freshwater fish. There were numerous tanks with dead fish all over the bottoms of their tanks, every one of their tanks had an algae problem, they had several saltwater fish in quarantine due to illness, and their coral looked sick. I am disgusted by the way the employees take care of their fish room. I would not recommend anyone buying anything there. read more

I took two cats and a dog to the shot clinic today for the first time. At first it looked like a long line and I was afraid it would take forever. It was actually find of fun standing in line and getting to know everyone and their pets. I got all my animals taken care of with a minimum of fuss and I got out of there for under $50! The store is very well stocked and if I ever need anything special for my pets I will definitely check there first! The food looked kind of pricey, but I don't have a pet with special dietary needs. read more

When I approached the counter with around $350 worth or supplies (an amount I, until now, bought from them at least monthly) the cashier exclaimed loudly "wow, does this guy run a cat shelter". While this may have been intended as a joke, it was made as a statement at large in a crowded store, and even if interpreted as a joke and not the harassment it felt like, I was the butt of it. I should have left then, but after loading up that much stuff I just wanted to buy it and be on my way. He then proceeded to pass me off to a newer employee (assuring me I was in good hands while telling her she could handle it) who I had to remind twice to look up my account for a buy ten get one offer. After she was unable to actually process the free item I had to prompt her to kindly bag my merchandise so I could at least leave after another manager she recruited struggled to issue the credit for 10+ minutes. A trip to the store should be efficient and, if anything else pleasant. Feeling harassed and not serviced properly is not an item on my list. Because of this I will be taking my business elsewhere. I like to support local businesses, so this sucks. read more

Ok, I'll concede what many here on Yelp have commented on: Clark's prices are higher than your big box stores and Amazon. That's obvious though; it's a locally-owned store, how could it possibly compete with stores a million times its size? Well, I'll tell you how. For starters, the employees at the big box stores direct you to Clark's, as in the case of how I ended up shopping here. I'd been looking for some cockatiels to give company to our lonesome little Freddie, a cockatiel we'd brought with us from New York City after he was nearly killed by his cage mates. We stopped by the big box and found no cockatiels and were nearly going to buy some parakeets, but were concerned that these birds weren't of the friendly variety. An employee explained we'd have better luck with friendly birds at Clark's. The best advice I've received since someone told me to listen to Kendrick Lamar. I digress. Anyhow, I visited Clark's a week before making a purchase, and despite the sticker shock at some of the bird prices, I was impressed by the knowledge of the employee that helped me, Luciano, and the philosophy of the store. For instance, there are a pair of parrots for sale, but only as a pair, as the store explicitly declares that the birds can't be separated, as they are very close to one another. I respect the consideration for animals over an easy sale and profits. I came back a week later with the thought in the back of my mind to get a blue quaker parrot I'd seen earlier as well as the pearl cockatiel that we planned to make a girlfriend to our dear Freddie. The cockatiel was $150, much more expensive then the birds we can get in NYC, but I am entirely sure these are cheap because they're smuggled from the Dominican Republic. So, doing things ethically for a steeper price, I'm all for it. My wife and I agreed we'd pay that price for the cockatiel, but I still wanted my parrot. Luciano, allowed both of us into the bird area and we got a chance to interact with both birds, as well as another beautiful parrot. He gave advice, suggestions on food and such. Then we asked him to give us some time to think things over. My wife and I agreed we wanted both the cockatiel and the blue quaker parrot, but at $300 for the latter, it was looking pricey. We decided to ask for a discount for both birds. We asked Luciano and he agreed to give us both birds for $400, a $50 discount. Not great, but we quickly jumped on it. Was it a real deal? Who knows? But it felt like one, plus we loved the birds, the service, and the atmosphere at Clark's. Plus, Luciano gave us some free millet and showed us what food both birds needed. Could we have gotten the same service at Petsmart? Perhaps. But I don't think we'd have found such a bird expert as Luciano, nor felt so confident that we were getting some great birds. I must admit, I may not always buy our birds' food and accessories here, but I'll certainly go in to make purchases and pick Luciano's brain about once a month. Bottom line, this place is irreplaceable, as are some of it's employees, their philosophy, and the beautiful animals they nurture until sale. read more

Clark's is the place to go for anything pet related in the Albuquerque area. It's independently owned, with two locations (the other is at Menaul and Juan Tabo), and the staff that works there works there because they want to. We get premium foods for our cats and dogs that the larger chains do not carry. We were really impressed when we first got our marine aquarium, and--being new to the hobby--sought expertise at Clark's. They delivered big-time. I never knew there was so much to know about being an aquarist, but I learned quickly that there's an entire universe of knowledge, and the Clark's staff knows it, and is more than happy to share their knowledge. You'll pay a little more for some things, because they don't move the volume of the larger pet stores, but the individual attention and access to great advice is well worth it. read more
