I thought a custom cake would be similar to what I've experienced at Pomegranate. Alas, no. Thus begins my tale of ordering a cake for a special occasion--The Ol' Mangaretta's birthday. Now, Mang loves vanilla cake with vanilla icing. Yes. Plain ol' vanilla done right is amazing. I wrote to LDC and asked if they could make an all-butter, vanilla cake for me, seeing that the people I'd be celebrating with have allergies and butter is the safest oil. They assured me that it would be no problem. I went to pick up the cake, and was surprised that the process was disorganized. Okay, well, I'll just take my cake. After a long wait, I got said cake. I was so excited when I got it home--it was beautiful! They took great care in decorating it. We cut it, and then began the disappointment. The cake tasted burnt, though it only was a deep brown. It was overdone, for sure. If I'd baked it, I would have trimmed off the top, bottom, and sides. The buttercream was decent, but the burnt flavor overwhelmed everything else. So, sorry, my dear Pomegranate peeps, but one star for your connection to Pomegranate, beautiful decorating, and decent buttercream, and minus four stars for disorganized pick-up and burnt, pricey cake that ended up down the drain.
