Update: Nicole's reply to my review is very good. They are very good at sales, marketing, spinning the facts and blaming the client, which proves my point ... DON'T TRUST THEM. DON'T TRUST THEM! DON'T HIRE THEM! I hired them for a whole house renovation starting in December, 2020. Apparently the owner has a 2nd business named Classic Custom Homes that was the business he used for our renovation. While the owner apparently knows residential construction and said the right things in the beginning, such as finishing the design before starting construction, that's not what happened. I discovered afterward that the project manager's attitude with the full backing of the owner was that homeowners should shut up, get out of the way and take what I give you when I give it to you. The original completion date was the end of September, 2021. Then it was October, then November, then mid-December with assurance we could move in on December 13th . See the attached photos of my house from December 12th. The house was a disaster with kitchen cabinets half installed, all bathrooms unfinished and more. The house was as filthy a construction site as I've been on with a pile of trash in the garage. This had nothing to do with the supply chain. This was an arrogant Classic employee who thought clients should shut up, ... Their goal was changed from finishing the work to getting us in on Christmas Eve because we were living in a hotel. Finishing the work took several more months. The cost eventually rose to 80% over the original budget, which started in the mid six figures. I even agreed to a 20% increase when we signed the contract over the original budget because the parameters were better defined by then. In my opinion, the main reason for the cost increases was that the owner structured the contract with most of our original requests as estimates leading to "extra work" orders. With the house torn apart, I had no other options. Another issue was the invoicing and accounting. I refused to pay for work that wasn't completed, yet that didn't stop them from invoicing for unfinished work. They included multiple subs and work orders on invoices forcing me to not pay any invoice to get their attention. Then they took one payment I made and applied it to other parts of the job while rewriting the invoice to match their shenanigans. The owner claimed I was starving women and children since I refused to pay for unfinished work. Then he copied my private emails regarding the payment argument and posted them on his company's blog. Finally, they have very sensitive feelings. When I asked about completion dates for work that wasn't done or mistakes or issues, they attacked me as the bad guy. Homeowners should shut up, ... CHI was great, from start to finish! We had a retractable screen door installed. My wife and I love it. We have an old-style wood door we wanted to keep exposed. The retractable screen allows us to keep the look of the door but be able to open it for the breeze in the summer. We could not be happier. read more

We had a sales consultant that came to our home (Andrea), asked our budget and put together a design that we liked. We discussed the quality of materials and wanted to know what was to be used. Speaking with owner during the initial consultation, we discussed wanting to install good quality materials, not low end materials. After going under contract, and preparing to order materials, we noticed the materials that were being presented were all Low quality. the cabinet colors were limited. the back splash is being pulled out from a drawer with limited options. As a consumer, that's something that should be disclosed to a customer. The customer dictates what they want installed, not trying to nickel and dime a customer once you have them under contract. The mistake we made - LABOR COSTS were over 50% of our budget. There's no way LABOR should costs more than 1/3 of your budget. We were under the impression that the contractor was going to provide us with really good discounts, however, as we attempted to upgrade to a different brand of Cabinets that's when we were advised of significant up-charge. And salesperson tells us, oh well your only spending xxx of dollars. Fast forward - we decided not to give this company business. On the surface they appear to be professional but as a consumer, I'm not in the market to get ripped off. Good lesson learned, BUYER BEWARE. Anyone will take your money, you need to be an informed consumer. The owners were notified to give us a call to discuss the termination of the contract and have not done so. Whether or not they reply to this message is IRRELEVANT. I have saved myself thousands of dollars not doing business with this company and I urge consumers to shop carefully. Know what you're buying, Have multiple quotes, have the company explain to you the process of picking out your materials. Ask how much experience the designers have. These companies can hire anyone, with or without experience. Hire your own if need be....Get what you are paying for. I requested a quote for a difficult project at my home and Tony Cuevas took the time to explain the cost risks and possible scenarios to get what I wanted. In the end, his honest communication and upfront explanations likely saved me a lot of money as what I wanted was well beyond my budget. Other firms were willing to take the job with fine print putting all risk on me without a clear explanation of possible change orders needed. I was very disappointed to find out that this company is not related at all to the orange county classic home-improvement products. I contacted this company to get a quote assuming it was the same company that I've used many times for my other properties in orange county. The representative was hesitant to come out to quote me and stated that they could offer the same deals that I have received in the past. After about 10 minutes on the phone and talking about products, it seemed that he was unfamiliar with the high and blinds that I have purchased in the past, and when I mentioned that it was a rental location, he was trying to quote a cheaper product. I ended up contacting the sales rep that I used for my other house, who advised me that this company was not the same even though they're using the name that was already established in the past by the OC company. From the first time we met with Tony the sales manager to the final walk-through with Neil, we were incredibly impressed with them and extremely happy with our exterior remodel. We had our roof replaced, significant wood siding removed, stucco repaired, and new rainscreen siding installed Neil was extremely responsive and went above and beyond making sure we we're happy with the remodel. My vision was to create a zen style bath, comparable to what I felt was a sensible approach to bathing, emulating what I found on my visits to Japan. Classic Home Improvements seemed to understand what I wanted and after interviewing a Number of companies, decided to go with them, The project was to design a complicated half bath renovation with shower and walk in jetted bath. After some glitches including the bankruptcy of the first walk in tub I chose I had to find another bath. Celebrity series of New York worked perfectly with our concept. My crew was awesome: professional and clean - Dennis and Umberto on site every day with Neil insuring the project finishing relatively on schedule. Neil, the Super, made regular trips to be sure any problems or challenges be addressed. Dennis said there were no problems; only solutions. Umberto never left my home until their workspace was immaculate. Yvonne did great drawings and Kelley so helpful with design ideas which helped the project achieve the look I wanted. Despite a few glitches, the end product exceeded expectations. I have a safe bathing experience to grow with me as I age with a very custom look. Not cookie cutter. Certainly not the least expensive game in town, I felt I got what I wanted. Very happy and have received many compliments from neighbors. I think this is the coming age of bathing. Shower first and walk into a fully jetted tub which helps circulation and melts stress away. Planning on adding a sound system and awaiting a custom made curtain to top it all off. I am currently looking at all options in renovating my 1970's original kitchen. I came across CHI through another website and decided to get an estimate. The consultant scheduled was on time and polite. There are a few things I did not like about this company that led me to write a review. 1. We wanted a very quick and rough estimate to avoid wasting everyones time. We basically said we had a budget in mind (10-15k) for our kitchen and that if they were not even in ball park range, we didn't want to waste anyones time taking measurements. He told us that CHI never does a kitchen remodel for under 30K but to expect a rough estimate of 30-40K. We were a bit shocked that they charged that much but we were curious how they came to that price range. We asked how much the cabinets cost per linear feet and the cost for labor. The figures he gave us did not add up to almost 40K. No where near that in fact. We questioned it further but he couldn't give us a good answer or figure sheet. Flag number 1. 2. The consultant told us that when renovating your kitchen, you should expect to spend 30% of your home's value. This figure makes no sense! I would say that the average home price in San Diego is about 500k. So are those homeowners paying $160k for a kitchen remodel?!?!?I don't think so. Flag number 2. 3. When we brought the idea of maybe refacing our cabinets (with another company) rather than getting an all new kitchen, he said that refacing would be more than 10k. He told us not to expect to pay anything less than that. Little did he know that earlier in the day we had a kitchen refacing company do an estimate to reface our cabinets. The estimate came in at $5500. Flag number 3. The consultant wasn't pushy and was actual polite and very nice but I wasn't impressed in the least because I feel like this company inflates prices considerably. The crew that did the work was fantastic. I initially thought the designer was fabulous too. She was very knowledgeable and helpful. However somewhere in the process, the wrong materials were ordered and she wouldn't even meet with us to try to problem solve what happened. She re-ordered the cabinet doors after ordering the wrong edge. But the floor tile was a huge mistake. She brought the tile we picked to choose paint colors from, but that wasn't the tile ordered and initially installed. CHI made us pay for it since my husband had signed a layout drawing with the wrong tile listed, but he had no idea because there were no images of materials attached to that list. When we tried to meet with the manager, the owner dismissed my questions, interrupted me and mansplained his business reputation to me. He also derided our tile choice. The project manager Mitch went above and beyond trying to make things right. His crew was courteous and professional. CHI was foolish to let go of Mitch. While the work ultimately done was done well, I would not hire CHI again simply because of the trouble with the office and the attitude of the owner. read more

We were referred to Classic Home Improvements for retractable screens by the company that replaced our windows and sliding doors. They came out right away for an estimate and they were installed 3 weeks later. We had them installed on 5 sliding doors and couldn't be happier. They're easy to use and so functional, and it's great to not stare at the screen when they're not in use now. So much lighter letting sun in through the glass as opposed to the screen when inside. Cesar did both our measure and install and was fantastic. The woman that works the phone as scheduler was also super helpful and professional. She is not a pleasant person to work with! I requested an estimate on a complete kitchen remodel. Andrea came to my house did a quick measurement then told me she will then go back make a 3D design. The next step will be me visiting her office to discuss the design and contract. Two weeks later she confirmed my visit without telling me the design is not done! Only when I arrived her office in Escondido then she told me she DIDN'T HAVE TIME to make my design! Apparently I'm not an important customer to her! Very disappointed! I was seriously considering using this company. But her attitude totally changed my mind. Classic Home Improvements is a class act all the way. I called them for an estimate on a modern kitchen remodel project at my house. I have a galley kitchen and wanted to remodel it into an open floor plan modern kitchen. A very big project to me. They were very nice and helpful over the phone taking time to answer my million newbie questions. Then they sent someone over to see it and give me quote. The remodel cost seemed reasonably fair considering all the work involved. Unfortunately I didn't use their services because my funding didn't come though the way I wanted it to. If I had the money I would have gone ahead with the kitchen remodel with them. I still might in the near future. They were super cool about talking with me and doing the quote. Overall my experience with them was positive. Most recently, I researched for a Home Improvement contractors in San Diego. I decided to call those I thought had considerably descent reviews. One of those I called and left a message was CLASSIC HOME IMPROVEMENTS. Michael Kindzierski, from Classic Home called back instantaneously. We scheduled a time to meet with Michael at the home my spouse and I were considering on purchasing. We were immediately impressed at the world-class customer service afforded by Michael. The home we were considering was built in the mid '50s, which was my spouse's parents' home--where he grew up in. I expressed my desire on how I want a few rooms improved, i.e. master bedroom and bathroom; kitchen; and an extension to the living and family rooms involving knocking downs walls to have a feel of an open space with large windows, etc. Michael was attentive and patiently listened and took down notes. He made intelligent and reasonable suggestions when it was his time to speak, which impressed us. He was very easy to talk to. And more importantly, he was very polite and not pushy. My spouse and I were seriously considering using his expertise and his company CLASSIC HOME Improvements; however, after prayers and consideration of having to move down south against keeping the home we owned in Sorrento Valley where my spouse is closer to work and not have to battle traffic, we decided against purchasing the home and relocating to Chula Vista. However, because of Michael's professionalism and exhibited knowledge of home improvement protocols, I would highly recommend him and the company he works for to anyone who might be considering doing some home improvements. We employed Classic Home Improvements to furnish a FULL kitchen remodeling. Everything from total demolishing of our existing kitchen (from floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall, all appliances and lighting) to a complete new remodel. From our first experience with Andrea Short, who handled the sales and design/planning, we felt comfortable with the knowledge that they understood our desires. Looking at Andrea's computer design work was amazing. She took our fragmented ideas and put them into a framework that was exactly what we had in mind. From there we experienced the friendly and close-knit service of Kelly Walla, and her crew, who guided us through our product selection and design work (cabinets, counter-tops, flooring, etc.). All the while, Nicole Crocker kept us informed and outlined with what's to happen and in what time line. Once the project began, Kevin Kries, our project manager, and his crew (Chandler, Derrick, Dean, and others), were always hard working toward a quality job. You could tell that the workers liked working with Kevin, and he was always supportive of their performance. His professional knowledge was valuable in working through difficult points of the project. If something didn't seem to come out perfectly right, the crew would not move on until it did! All the while, we were kept abreast of what was to happen next and how long it would take. Once the project was complete, we couldn't have been happier. I was unsure of using this company after reading a review but decided to go with them as they were more able to work with my time schedule better then anyone else. BEST decision I've made. Hired CHI to add a shower & closet to an existing half bath and to change out some light fixtures and to tile a backsplash. Jack, the president, quoted that the work would take 4 weeks once started, as long as we had all finishing materials on hand at the start. At the kick-off, the foreman and sub estimated 6-8 weeks. The project ended up taking 11 weeks. Here are a few notes on our experience- Communication - There was a lack of communication between Jack, Dan (VP), foreman, sub, and back office. This resulted in us being told repeatedly that project was on schedule when it wasn't. We were also billed a milestone payment for completed tile when the tile was no where near complete. Foreman - Foreman, Larry, told me repeatedly, "the worse you want it, the worse you'll get it." I was only ever asking for the work to be completed within the time frame originally estimated by the foreman himself (6-8 weeks). I was very upfront at the kick-off meeting that we needed work to be complete by the 8 week mark as we were having out of town guests who would need to use the shower. The guests were with us for two weeks and never once able to use the shower. We rarely saw foreman onsite (he later explained - after job was complete - that it was hard for him to come because most of his other jobs are in the northern part of San Diego.) This was further frustrating because sub told us mid-way through the process that this was his first job with CHI (luckily, we generally liked the sub). Also, on one occasion towards the end of the project (certainly after the initial completion deadline), the foreman made arrangements to meet us on a Saturday to walkthrough project - he never showed or called on the day of. Finishing items - We bought all the items that were requested and had them at the start of the project - tile, grout, shower pan, showerhead. We were repeatedly asked for last minute items towards the end of the project - door knob, floor transition, shower door coordination. Wish CHI could have let us know about these things upfront. There were delays with some of the CHI provided materials (trim was a big one). There's no reason CHI shouldn't hold itself to the same standard (having all materials procured in advance of project start) that it requires of its customers. Schedules - The subs had no set schedules. There were workdays that lasted a couple of hours, started late afternoon and days they didn't come at all or only one of the two people came. Would have appreciated more communication. Had there been a regular work schedule, I believe project would have finished on time. Again, more presence of the foreman seems like it would have helped. Fees - I won't get into details about fees. CHI is not the cheapest contractor out there. We had some issues with what seemed like easy things, but CHI considered out of scope. Some of the above seem like common contractor complaints. We hired CHI, in part, because we were hoping to avoid some of these issues. Designer - The one positive of the project was Kelley, the designer. She helped us pick tile and lighting. She gave us suggestions, without being pushy. We could not have come up with such a great design without her. She saved us stress and at least a few arguments! Overall, we are satisfied with the finished work, but remain frustrated with the process. We felt like a second class project for CHI. If I had it to do over, might still hire CHI, but would write a few clauses into the contract - some penalty for not completing on time and a set process for anything that costs extra. read more

I found this company through the Home Advisor website and scheduled an appointment for them to provide an estimate to repaint my house based on a couple of good reviews. I received a confirmation email that Tony would conduct the assessment on Sunday, June 9th at 9:00 am. Tony never showed up and didn't call to say he couldn't make it or to reschedule. When Home Advisor followed up with me to see how the appointment went, I told them CHI was a no show. Today (10 days later) I received an email from CHI stating that Tony tried to call to confirm the appointment and that he showed up at my house but no one was home. I offered to show them my phone records to prove that Tony never called and I know he didn't show up because I waited for him in my front yard for over an hour. I guess the house painting business in San Diego is booming because they obviously don't need my business. read more

We live in 4S Ranch and just used Classic Home Improvements to do a full renovation of our kitchen. We've lived in the house for 15 years and our kitchen was basically brown/Tuscan look, brown granite, etc. We wanted it upgraded to a more modern feel - white and grey scheme. We looked extensively at various options prior to selecting Classic (from high-end like Lars, to basically subcontracting the project out ourselves to try to save money). In the end we selected Classic, and now that the project is complete I feel compelled to write a review. In our minds, Classic is a perfect balance in terms of getting the highest quality product and service, but at a very fair price. The whole project took 7 weeks, and they stayed on time and on budget throughout. Every day they provide updates on the project via a website so you know exactly where things stand and what's coming next. The first person we interacted with was their sales person Andrea Short who was terrific. She is extremely creative, has great taste, and has a good pulse on what people are doing right now with their kitchens. Gave us a lot of good ideas. The contract process was smooth and easy, renderings were accurate and came immediately after contract was signed. They were very flexible in terms of making adjustments. Once the work started we primarily integrated with the project manager Royce - he is very knowledgeable in construction, kept the crew on task, and was easy to reach (cell). Importantly, this is a very high integrity, trustworthy operation. EVERYONE who came into our home was pleasant, friendly, and professional. We felt perfectly comfortable giving leaving them alone and giving them full access to our home. They are meticulous about the details and won't end the project until both they and client are satisfied that everything is perfect. Very disappointed. First it took an act of congress just to get a consultation. The receptionist was rude and continued to transfer me to the wrong department and then wrong person. I was finally able to schedule a contractor to come to my house after two weeks of trying to get to the right department. The contractor that came to the house was nice and seemed like he knew what he was talking about. I am in need of stucco work and paint to my home. From the beginning to the end of our project Classic Home Improvements has been a pleasure to work with. Starting with their quick and timely response from our Sales Representative, Gordie Guthrie. Gordie listened to our needs and was extremely knowledgeable regarding what the project would entail. He was able to give us a bid within a few days that was right in line with 2 other bids we received. We chose to go with Classic Home because of many factors including their project manager, Royce Ramswick. Royce kept in constant contact with us throughout the project. If we did have a glitch (and there will always be a glitch), Royce addressed it right away to resolve it. We were also very impressed with the crews that work with Classic Home. Kevin, Zach, Desi to name a few, (and there many others), were all professional and cleaned up the site every time before they left for the day. We had a terrible experience years ago and Classic Home has renewed our faith in what a great contractor experience can be. I hired Classic Home Improvements for several projects including a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, roof repair, and stucco work. Before I hired them I met with 3 other contractors. One was MUCH higher and the other one was significantly less but couldn't handle all the projects so I would have had to find another contractor for the outside work. I hired them because they were one of the only contractors I met with who could do all the projects and their price seemed reasonable. They were very helpful with designing my kitchen and bathroom, I am not so great at selecting colors that go well together so it was nice to have that help. I liked that they gave me a calendar so I knew what was going to be happening every day. I also liked that they gave me an update every day on the project. I will probably use them again in a few years when I remodel my master bathroom. I would definitely recommend hiring CHI for any major remodel. read more

I must begin by suggesting any rating takes into account several major components of a Home Improvement project. Not necessarily in order of importance: scope of the work; design; materials needs, quality, price; skill of the specialists; punctuality and performance of those who do the work; accessibility of the coordinator; environmental considerations; thoughtfulness and consideration from both parties; final evaluation. CHI did roofing jobs for two of our neighbors over a few weeks before our project. They were both pleased with the work, and recommended CHI. Tony came and did the estimate and wrote the roof-enhancement and re-cover deal, designed to eliminate puddling and leakage from our fifty-plus-year-old flat-top family room. He was prompt and helpful. We asked for a second, more-slanted roof above the knotty pine tongue-in-groove that the roofing material had been laid on, as well as a reflective shield to reduce some heat transfer to the interior. That seems to have had the additonal benefit of cutting down on noise when it rains. There was a bit of rainy weather that delayed completion, but the new slant and cover was done in just about the length of time the team anticipated. The workers were pleasant and apparently efficient. On workdays they arrived very near the appointed hour, took an appropriate lunch break, and left when they reached a good point to pause the work. They came with the materials needed, so there was no time lost once on site. They cleaned up after every day's work. A supervisor/coordinator stopped by once or twice a day to see progress was made at a respectable rate. Once the work was done, they did a good final cleanup. Completed work appears to be flawless. We won't know about its effectiveness until several more heavy rains test it, and durability can't be determined for several years, but the design, materials, and execution seem to indicate we can be confident is will do its job for many years. We won't hesitate to come back and complain if anything changes; I'm not a "Woohoo!" kind of guy, but at this point it's almost appropriate. We'll see. read more

I had a meeting with the sales rep, George, a few days and remain uneasy. He is a very nice man and spent a lot of time at my home. I appreciated his patience and customer service - top notch presentation. However, I would never use this company. I am in the process of expanding my kitchen by 7 feet into my driveway with some upgrades (countertops, cabinets, etc.). Due to the expansion, I expected to pay around 50k or so due to the additional square footage and age of the home. No problem. Well, I guess I had "Stupid" written on my forehead that day when the estimate provided was from $109-154k (without selecting the cabinets and finishes)!!! And, only a 1 year warranty! What disturbed me the most was when I was reviewing the estimate, there was a "rework" fee ranging from $24-$35k. Now, if a contractor is taking measurements for plans and creating lifelike 3D designs, as an experienced company/contractor, you should have a good grasp on the scope of the project. Of course, there are always minor adjustments needed, but not to the tune of $24-35k! As a company, if they don't have the knowledge and experience to predict such costs in the estimate, why should a consumer pay thousands of dollars for the mishaps/rework?? I remodel my home every 5 years and have never heard of this practice. I still wonder if there is no need to do any "rework", is the money returned to the customer???? Hmmmm.... Nonetheless, since their visit, I have had two additional estimates from reputable contractors for $37k and 42k. I have three more companies coming next week and I assume they will be in the same price range. So, no, I will not be contracting with this company. I will save my $154k for retirement and use another company to meet my kitchen remodeling needs:-) read more

Yesterday, George from CHI came by my house to give my wife and me an estimate to renovate our kitchen. We had already had several contractors come out and give us estimates; however, none of them were as informative, personable, and thorough as George. He was a real pleasure to work with. He has a very honest demeanor, and because of it, we trusted what he had to say. In fact, it became obvious at a given point that his estimate was above our budget, but that didn't stop him from continuing to take the time to provide us with additional information so that we could make a well informed and educated decision about our renovation.
