When we started, we only knew what we didn't like about our current kitchen. Like any major project, we started by reaching out to a couple of vendors to get quotes, that's where we met Alon, the project manager for Lumina Builders. What immediately stood out to us was that he had ideas and solutions to address our pain points and make enhancements, we wouldn't have ever considered, and didn't just wait for us to tell him how we wanted things. He created a vision for us in that first quote visit. The other contractor we spoke to didn't provide any ideas just asked us how we wanted it. It was a very easy decision to go with Alon and Lumina Builders. Our project was estimated to take 2-3 months and ultimately took two and a half months to complete. We designed a brand new kitchen, addressing all of our concerns and adding a few recommendations from Alon to streamline some areas. They ripped everything out aside from the flooring and walls. We got brand new custom cabinets, custom lighting, and new countertops. Our fridge was moved to a new, more accessible area. Our sink was shifted down to align with the stove for continuity sake (never realized how much I hated it being in a corner previously). We had a new little cabinet built in our little breakfast nook area and we had an appliance garage built to house everything that took up counter space. Everything is so much brighter and more open and, even though we know the demensions are roughly the same, it feels so much wider. We are ecstatic with how everything came out. Alon is a genius. He was responsive to us throughout the project, checking in weekly to see how things were going, giving us peace of mind throughout this process, as first time remodelers. We were indecisive about the primary cabinet color (I was very worried we'd be stuck with something we didn't really like) but he worked with the cabinet makes to give us several samples to choose from. I've had several construction projects performed on my home and have never been really satisfied with how it went until trying Lumina. Alon was our project manager for a 3 bathroom remodel and he was fantastic. The project was well organized with almost no down time at all. When anything wasn't perfect (and this is construction, there's always something that doesn't go as planned) he was on it instantly. I'm talking with n the phone with me within minutes figuring out what to do to sort things out. They were incredibly fair about everything. The crews they sent were also very very good. Lumina was the only one of the three that came in with verified reviews, pictures and videos of past and ongoing projects, and the expertise and end-to-end service we were looking for. Designer Tal has done a good job making the right decision even after our initial doubts. It's always such a challenge to find a good contractor, much less one that provides both quality work and great customer service, and that's exactly what we got with Lumina. We had a couple different jobs we needed to get done, including a unique one where we needed to remove an extra shower in our guest bathroom in order to add space to a neighboring room, and also redoing a flat roof that was improperly sloped. Lumina was able to take on both projects, starting them around a week after we signed, running them in parallel with different teams, and finishing everything weeks ahead of schedule. Every member of their crew who came in were experienced at their specialty, and as a result, completed their portions on time with great results. Every one of them was professional and very respectful. Most importantly, our project manager, Ben, was incredible to work with. Working with Lumina Builders for our 2 bathroom repair/remodel was the best decision we could make, after we made the unfortunate decision of originally going with a contractor recommended by our insurance company (who I hear is no longer in operation due to bad practices). Alon and Dor came for an initial consult (master bedroom build, insulation, plus installation of ceiling, sliding door, recess lighting, a/c)--we had a rough idea of what we wanted to do but needed a lot of help to figure out what was possible and what would make the most sense. They were also very clear about the schedule of payments and the work to be completed, so we weren't blindsided by any huge costs. As I mentioned in my earlier review, we contracted with Lumina Builders to renovate our guest bathroom, laundry room, and kitchen. They did a fabulous job (5 stars) on our bathroom, and this review is for the laundry room and kitchen. Lumina did a super job on our laundry room and kitchen. Our project manager Oded kept an eye on the workers and made several great suggestions to us along the way -- saving us money and in some cases resulting in a better "look." The workers were skilled, diligent, and respectful throughout. We have a cat and a dog and they were willing and able to work around them with minimal disruption. In addition, Lumina was able to stay on schedule -- getting the entire job completed the first week of March, fortunately, before the coronavirus outbreak. I unfortunately experienced a slow leak behind my fridge, which required gutting all of the interior walls and damaged my kitchen cabinets. After remediation, I talked to a bunch of remodelers (both independent GCs and design+build firms) to try and get everything rebuilt as soon as possible. A friend recommended Lumina Builders to me, and originally, I was leaning toward another remodeling company, but then I got to meet Alon. Talking with Alon, I quickly realized that we would work well together, and his easy-going demeanor meant I would feel comfortable giving him open feedback and raising concerns, should any arise. With the other company, I wasn't able to talk to the person who would be my project manager, and if we ended up not being able to communicate well, the project could've become a major headache. Because this was an unplanned remodel, I had to put together plans and a design quickly. Alon was able to show me examples of products in their showroom, and also came with me to a tile showroom to look at options. He never pressured me to go one way or another, but instead offered helpful insight and advice. Lumina Builders was by no means my least expensive quote, but I decided having a good rapport with the project manager would make up for the difference. We've all heard our fair share of horror stories with contractors, and having someone I could openly communicate with to handle the challenges and take care of set backs was key. The subcontractor on my project ended up being very challenging to work with, and he took a bunch of unfortunate shortcuts, but Alon made sure to find another sub to fix everything. Obviously, it would've been better for it to have been done right the first time, but you take a gamble with contractors, and the difference here is Alon took care of it, instead of me having to start another search again. That, to me, is the biggest differentiator in working with Lumina and Alon. Some general tips I've learned: - Make sure your contractor actually puts up containment before beginning anything else. Mine said he was going to buy some plastic sheeting, so we left him to do his thing, and I came back to NO containment AT ALL, everything demo'd and dust in every crevice imaginable, all over the house and exposed furniture - including air ducts. When he finally put up some sheeting, it was the cheapest, thinnest plastic imaginable. There's no way to avoid some construction dust, but there are definitely ways to mitigate it, especially if you're living there while construction is happening. - Make sure they also protect the floor, if you aren't redoing the floor, before beginning anything. - Avoid Waypoint semi-custom shaker cabinets if your budget allows it, especially if you have a very active family. I don't know if it's quality degradation (still) because of "covid manufacturing issues," but the painted ones come dinged up, with a very thin layer of paint, and I don't feel like they'll hold up as well as my 20+ year builder-grade cabinets that came with the house. So far we've gotten replacements from Waypoint under warranty, but it's annoying and adds unforeseen delays to your project. Regardless, if you're looking for a design & build firm, I highly recommend working with Alon at Lumina Builders. He'll take care of you and help you bring your vision to life.
