Clawson's used to be a post office and I like the way that they kept the service windows, scales and other things that now are just memories of the past. This restaurant was busy, however we could still carry on conversations and hear each other from across the table. This is definitely a nice place for a casual date night or an evening out with your family. I ordered the crabcake sandwich. My boyfriend had the mahi-mahi and my son ordered the fish and chips. The portions were a very good size and we were grateful that we had not ordered starters. Never have I ever seen so much food on a fish and chips platter. My crabcake sandwich was very good. The sandwich was so flavorful due to the mixed greens tomato slices and remoulade sauce. My boyfriend really liked the mahi-mahi with the mango salsa, coconut, jasmine rice, and steamed vegetables. Has came with thinly sliced carrots and string beans. My son had the fish and chips.... Really fish and chips. Had a great experience with family visiting from out of state. After reading mixed reviews, we tried anyway and was not disappointed. On our table was the ever popular Blowing Rock Burger, a fresh tasting Mahi Mahi, a blackened mahi with mango salsa, sweet chili sauce coconut jasmine rice and vegetables, shrimp and grits, salad with steamed shrimp, but the show stopper had to be the Shrimp Mac & Cheese, a four-cheese cream sauce over cavatappi pasta with bacon & scallions & topped with fried shrimp. Should have known something was up when every restaurant in town had a 20 minute wait and here we were able to get a table immediately. people working here were very nice. It was the food I had an issue with. Located across from the waterfront in downtown Beaufort, Clawson's is the most famous restaurant in town and has been around forever. We ordered two bowls of Clam Chowder and a Summer Fruit Salad with a side of grilled shrimp. Unfortunately, both bowls of soup were served cold--completely inedible. My husband and I moved them to the side of the table, and when the waitress came by to check on us, we let her know. She was polite and insisted on bringing us "fresh" bowls. A few minutes later, the same exact bowls were returned--and not even reheated. It was quite obvious they didn't care. At that point, we didn't bother eating them. When the salad arrived, it was missing the shrimp. Half way through the salad a plate with 4 small grilled shrimp was bright to the table. As an $11 add on, those 4 shrimp were grilled but most likely frozen from a bag and not fresh considering it's a town famous for fresh shrimp and oysters. It's disappointing when something like this goes wrong. read more

Rather disappointing meal at Clawsons, for an appetizer we ordered crab dip and it was very dry and bland tasting, also the Seafood Bisque which was less than expected. LWife and son ordered Fish and Chips that were satisfactory. I ordered shrimp and scallop pasta and truthfully I think if there were any scallops in it they were ground up. This is a tourist area and some business owners on the edge know you are probably not going to become a regular and in my opinion they cut every corner they can. Our last visit and we were entertaining family from out of town. To break it down 4 out of the 7 meals were either overcooked or greasy. Just back it up a bit we normally go there at least once a week and noticed that over time the quality of the meals were going downhill. It will be awhile before we will go back. Went for some heavy snacks at lunchtime. We hit the Server Lottery! Deb was super friendly, chatty, knowledgeable about the menu and really, really took good care of us (as we did of her). Located in a historic building with a great interior and vibe. We had the hot crab dip and the fried calamari. Both were generous portions and very good! Although the calamari only come with a remoulade sauce Deb also brough two other sauces she thought we would like (and she was correct - all good). Deb also recommended the down east style clam chowder but I was too full - so without asking she brought out a sample for me. It was great and well worth a try! The batter was very thick, cooked on the outside (almost burnt), but wet, gummy and underdone on the inside, pulling away from scant actual fish. Suspect too much batter and overly hot oil. We stopped in Beaufort while on vacation at the beach for an early dinner around 5. We were seated right away, party of 3, myself, my husband and son. This is a very cool old building and we loved the ambiance. Our waiter was pretty friendly, he checked on us multiple times. The food was good, nothing amazing. My husband and I shared the fried shrimp platter, definitely wouldn't recommend sharing. At our local seafood restaurant back home (which is really good and gives huge portions for 26$ for a platter) this was very underwhelming amount of food for that price. My son had the kids friend shrimp and he had almost the same amount on his plate. We also had the appetizer of buffalo shrimp which was a decent portion but underwhelming. Nothing terrible but nothing amazing either. As I said, loved the looks and feel of the restaurant but the food was just ok. read more

Man, we keep coming back and getting let down. Service wasn't quite as great this time and the food we ordered (scampi and shrimp and grits) was just not very impressive. We would not order it again. Went with a small group of friends for early ish dinner and it was very quiet, not too busy and the waiter was really nice. The price was kinda average. We also got onion rings but the batter was a bit strange and flakey instead of breaded. The beers they have are neat. We love Clawsons. Honestly you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I decided to change it up this time and got the crab cakes with cheese grits and the veggies. Might just be my new favorite. Had lunch here while visiting Beaufort. They handle food allergies very well. I have a severe shellfish allergy. They have a sign that mentions that their fryer is a shared fryer with shellfish (this was the first restaurant that I've seen that has a sign like this). The server knew about allergies and said that they work hard to avoid cross contamination. I had a wonderful tasty hamburger with a side salad. My partner had a Reuben sandwich with coleslaw. We stopped in for dinner while staying nearby. The atmosphere and decor was outstanding. There's a real sense of history. We started with the clam chowder and seafood bisque. Both were very good. Fresh, tasty, and plenty of seafood. Maybe a bit too much salt but very well done. I was loving it at this point. I got the fried flounder "burger" with cheese grits and she got the reuben with fries. This is where it came crashing down on me. My sandwich looked good but the roll was like packing material and the founder was so dried out. There was little to no moisture in the fish. So sad. The grits were rich but tasty. Her reuben was good. Nothing special but good. Our server Kyle was outstanding. I just wish I'd stopped at the chowder. It might be worth another shot if we make it back. read more

We were wandering around Beaufort and stopped in here since it seemed to have good reviews. There was a bar area in the back but we were mainly here for lunch and were seated in one of the dining areas (this place is big!). We contemplated some entrees but felt they might fill us up too much before our drive home. My wife enjoyed her crab cake salad but I was disappointed in my special of the day: Asian fish tacos. I can't say for sure but it just tasted like they took a fish taco and put a bottled Asian sauce on it. Should have been kid heaven, but was so spicy that even the adults had to chase every bite with water. We are used to spicy Mexican and Indian. But in this case the fish and rice was just a vehicle for over seasoning. Couldn't eat most of it. The ribs were generous and good.
