I hate to flame a local business, but have to agree with the other reviewers that the staff here is rude and unhelpful. They don't provide direction, are unfriendly to patrons and act as if you're inconveniencing them if you dare to ask questions. We've been here three times and the rudeness prevails. Very disappointed that I went to pick up the horse my four-year-old painted, and two bowls my daughter and her friend made. I was told they get too many items in to keep them if you don't come back immediately. No, sorry, no phone call, nothing. So if someone gets sick or has a family emergency, etc. and they want to surprise their kids with the items they painted but took too long to pick them up due to this, they get told the $92 worth of items their children painted were thrown out. Don't expect to receive your clay pieces when promised. If you need your piece for a specific date just forget it AND their attitude is "oh well, nothing we can do!" When I took my four kids to paint for their first time, no one showed us where to pick out the items to paint, no one gave us any instructions. Even when we told the shop workers we were new to the studio, they didn't bother to walk us through the process from painting to adding items on to our works of art etc. I wouldn't recommend this particular Clay Cafe to ANYONE. There are many more such studios around that are far better, more friendly, less attitude and certainly more attuned to customer service! Don't waste your money... read more

I have been there twice in 2014. I'm not sure what all the negative reviews are about. We had a birthday party there for our young kids and about 10-12 of their friends. Kids got to pick out a clay object to paint (some animals, some robots, some cars, etc) and then sit at a table and paint with a wide selection of colors and brushes. Kids spend about 30 minutes painting and then the Clay Cafe takes them and cooks them and they are hardened and glazed (not technically competent to describe the actually process used) and ready to pick up in about a week. Everyone had fun and no hassles or issues with anything. Just be careful not to let your kids drop or break the clay objects, they will cost you money. I also went back with my 6 year old daughter one day without notice dropped in and decided to paint for the heck of it. I sat down and painted with her too. We spend about 90 minutes there. Nobody tried to rush us out of there. The lady that worked there was nice to us and she even showed us how they treat/cook the clay after we paint them to create the finished product. I'd say just be cognizant of the money you will spend. You have to pay for the clay item, plus the studio time. Kids love this place, and if you don't mind spending a little money you should enjoy watching their creativity blossom here. read more

I have had a horrible experience with these people. They were impatient with every step of process continually asking us when we were ready to move on from selecting a piece to paint, to choosing paints, to checking out. While we were there painting it was busy and I did not enjoy listening to them be short with customers on the phone. I asked that something I painted be available for pick up on a specific day and the woman told me it wouldn't be a problem when I paid. Every time I have called to check about it they have been rude and have interrupted me when I've tried to give them details about which piece was mine. They've told me how busy they are and how they can't have it ready on time. As a customer I don't care that they're busy. I care about having them follow through on what they've promised. They never should have said it could be ready in the seven days that they promised. I can't understand how they can offer classes for children. There isn't a single person in that place that is patient or kind enough to work with kids. I will NEVER go here again and I will NEVER recommend it to anyone. read more

I always go to Clay Cafe when I want a day to just relax, by myself or with friends. The studio is such a lovely atmosphere for when I want to do something creative: the staff is always wonderfully helpful (even on their busier days), there are always new pieces to paint, and the studio itself is very bright and welcoming. I go to school out of town, but every time I go home I always try to make time to paint at Clay Cafe! The pricing is also on the cheaper side compared to some of the other pottery places I've seen in the area. And it's usually not very crowded at all - not once have I ever felt rushed or frustrated with noise level or anything. I'd highly recommend Clay Cafe to people of all ages who want to do something creative. read more

I took the kids into clay cafe to do a art project and they loved it! There were lots of pieces to choose from and the staff was very helpful. The kids had a blast and the cups we did turned out wonderful! I'd recommend this place for a children's activity or even a couple's date. read more

Rude staff. Service is at the bottom of their list with the overpriced pottery they offer. You call and ask if they are busy and they say no we are not, you arrive not even 5 minutes later and all the tables are taken so don't believe them when they tell you it's not busy. Will not be back again and I don't recommend this place at all. The other yelp reviews were right and I should have gone with my gut when I walked through the door and the blond chick with the piercings had a horrible attitude - if you don't want to work with people then don't work at a place where you deal with people!!! read more

I love the Clay Cafe! I have gone a handful of times over the course of a few years and had fun each time. While I'm not terribly artistic, the staff have helped guide me through painting and have on multiple occasions helped me sort through the stamps and books they have available to come up with ideas. It's small and does get crowded on summer weekends, but I can see why! I've never had to wait for a table, but I've overheard staff telling ppl they keep a wait list if it's a busy day and they'll call you when your table is ready (leaving plenty of time to go window shopping or grab a beer at Dogwood Tavern). I've typically painted mugs and bowls, which are inexpensive. The pottery changes with the seasons, I love their Christmas stuff. And frankly, $6 studio fee is a steal - I know of a place where they only let you have a certain number of paint colors at a time. I will continue to go to the Clay Cafe, always an afternoon well spent! read more

This time Grandma took the girls but when I came to pick up their works of art this evening, the woman at the desk did not give a warm welcome or assist me in identifying our own projects from the pick-up shelf. My 7 1/2 year old daughter is attending art camp @ Clay Cafe this week and she couldn't love it more! The instructors are fantastic and let the kids do the projects independently. Each day brings 3 new experiences - one clay, one drawing and one painting. We haven't picked up our pieces yet (they need time to be fired) but the artwork that has come home (poster about myself, adorable cardboard house for storing treasures, favorite foods painting and 6 perspectives on an object) has been creative and well thought out. I may send her for another week and was happy to find out that each week has different projects and pieces. I will update again after we get our pieces to report any issues. read more

We love Clay Cafe and Miss Gayla. A visit to paint and chat with Miss Gayla is especially important to my son and I because it is our togetherness time. We started off just trying it out, but we loved it so much we go back every other week. We have found everyone there so helpful; I believe Miss Gayla has colluded with my son on a Mothers Day gift for me (which of course MUST remain a secret from me). We have been going here for years, for their summer camps, for birthday parties and just for us. Gaela can plan projects for all ages and abilities, or you can just paint pottery on your own. Great for a family activity, or when cousins or other relatives come to town (although it takes a week to get items back from the kiln, so build that timeframe into your planning). read more

I've had a couple of experiences here, and neither one was great. As others have noted, it's a small space and the staff aren't helpful. In fact, a friend of mine commented that they seemed downright rude. Do NOT go during camps. It's crowded - very crowded during camps, and there aren't enough people working there. I think the managers should limit the number of people in the place to reduce some of the crowding. It was stressful. Their selection was very limited the day I went with my kids and their guests, so I felt bad that the kids were really having to look for something that caught their interest. Next time I want to do this kind of activity, I'm going to look for a less crowded shop with helpful and friendly staff members. read more

Nice little place. I brought my 2.5 yr old in to paint something. The staff was helpful and friendly. There were lots of pieces to choose from, and you helped yourself to the paint. The shop is pretty small. There was going to be a birthday party in the back part of the store, so we sat in the front. We were told that we might have to share our table if more people came. Not a problem, though I can imagine that it could get kind of full with a party in there. When we finished up, the staff let us know when we could pick up the finished piece (about a week). The website has a coupon for $2 off the studio fee. All in all, a very enjoyable time. read more

Disappointing experience. Over the phone I was told that it would not take 1 entire week to have my daughter's pieces fired and ready for pick-up. However, once we arrived and painted the 2 pieces the woman working that night told me that I had been misinformed and there was no way she could have my pieces ready in less than a week. Disappointing, but my real concern surrounds the $6 studio fee. My 5 year old daughter painted 2 pieces. I was helping her as she asked for assistance, like to paint the hooves of the horse figurine, grabbing the black paint, and washing the brushes. The woman charged me a studio fee as well as my daughter. It just felt like a bit of a money grab and the opposite of what I would call good business. That extra $6 was totally unnecessary as I paid $49 for two 6 inch tall horse figurines. I have a hard time believing that $43 wouldn't have been sufficient. read more

I love this place! it is so cute and there's great pottery to choose from. Everyone is super helpful and will walk you through all the steps of painting, which is nice if youve never painted pottery before. I have been there several times and would recommend it to everyone! I went there one afternoon on a Sunday with my 2 daughters. First of all the place was extremely small and it was very crowded that day. They put me on a wait list so I thought that it would be fine I will wait. After 30 minutes we finally got a table. I told them that I am new and need directions in what to do. They were not very helpful with the whole process. When we finished with our pieces we were told come back in a week to pick it up. One week later I went to pick up the final product. As I am waiting for someone to help me, a rude lady states "is there someone there to help you?". I told her there was not. She then tells me rudely, well go over there and pick out your items. There must have been about 50 ceramic items on this shelf. Many of them look the same. I did locate the pieces. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The staff are very rude, and customer service is terrible. They néed to understand that you are the customer and their attitude is unacceptable. I personally would never put my kids in a camp here or have a birthday party! read more
