Customer service is defensive, will write long lengthy responses that don't offer solutions (except their idea of a solution = ordering more product), and is extremely argumentative. Shipping is more than product itself and the sales rep will suggest you order a different finish than your sample, assuring you it looks identical and is a stronger material for floors, but in reality you're getting tile catfished and bamboozled, with tiles looking NOTHING like the photos of them in a certain finish online. But you'll be told you just don't understand tile variation even though you're a designer and have done 75+ zellige projects and are extremely familiar with tile installation LOL. You wait 3+ months for tiles and they come broken? No worries, you missed the window and they assure you that the tiles left their facility perfect condition and its YOUR fault they're broken! They want to be a craftsman boutique tile place so bad, but their customer service alone makes you realize why Home Depot, Lowe's, and main vendors are so much more worth your investment and returns for broken tiles aren't miracles - but normal business practice. Take your hard earned money elsewhere, Clay Imports absolutely does *not* want to earn your repeat business. read more

I've ordered from Clay Imports a couple times. I really like the tile, but it's just not worth it anymore. All of the other reviews are true - their customer service is pretty bad. Over a year ago, when visiting the showroom the energy was so unwelcoming I thought I had walked into some place I wasn't supposed to be. It was completely silent and no one looked up from their screens. Now (2024) they don't offer a pick up option, so there's really no benefit in ordering from a "cool local shop." There's a minimum rate of $200 tacked on to your tile. I can get the same tile shipped to me from another store for cheaper (I had both in my cart at the same time, but wanted to give a local shop my business). So now all sales are immediately final, no cancellations or returns, and you can't see the product before you take it home - lol their contract language on their website is enough to turn people away. read more

Remodeling a home comes with unexpected delays, and we understand that. The timeline for our bricks to arrive was 3 months. We planned our order in October and waited. Clay imports failed to notify us in December that our bricks had already arrived. What should have been exciting news was unfortunately upsetting considering we put house renovations on hold until we had the bricks. We were told by Leah at Clay imports, that they tried several times to contact us. There were no emails received, no spam in my folder and no missed calls for the phone numbers provided. To make matters worse, the Clay imports customer representative, Leah, was dismissive of the inquiry as to why we were not contacted. "Sorry to hear the renovations have been put on pause nonetheless and would love for you to pick up!" We had thought we would do multiple orders through Clay Imports, but have reconsidered. read more

Learn customer service. I'm not saying the customer is always right because there are people who abuse that. But when someone gives you their hard earned money and vouches for your product by installing it, you should treat them with respect and listen to them. Not give them attitude and argue over their claim that YOU SENT WRONG TILES. I ordered over 30 boxes of 11x11 tiles and two of the boxes were completely the wrong order (inch larger, different texture, different color). Even sent them photos. And they insisted I was wrong and they disagreed with me, and claimed variation. I needed to pay another couple hundred to have the correct tiles sent. Good luck on that business motto. The fact you all can't even include your names or titles on your emails, and it's not possible to speak with a rep over the phone speaks volumes. Treat your customers better, or hopefully people will catch wind of this and not support you. read more

This place sells great tile but wow they serve up some attitude in the showroom. I've been there a few times and wound up with that backwards customer service feeling where you feel like you are an inconvenience and somehow not worthy of buying their tile. Its like shopping couture in Paris or something...you just slink out knowing you aren't worthy. I tried 3 times hoping I would get the nice down to earth 'Austin' salesperson but had no luck. I ended up paying a hefty sum to get my tile shipped from Zia tile in CA. Come on Clay Imports we're supposed to be cool here in Austin!...not driving tile customers to shop in LA...sheesh! read more

Recently purchased 700 Saltillo tiles from Clay Imports for the floor in my finished basement. I'm located thousands of miles away, in NYC. All of my inquiries were answered promptly and professionally. A reasonable price was quoted and the shipping charges also seemed fair. I was able to track preparation and transportation of my order and the tiles arrived safely at the designated time. I ordered 15% more tiles than I needed, allowing for some damage in transport. In fact, only one tile in the order was damaged. All in all, dealing with Clay Imports was a pleasure and my floor looks incredible. read more

I would not order with them again. There are too many other great tile companies that actually appreciate the business. While their product is fine, their customer service is abysmal. They also have a lot of knitpicky policies that go hand in hand with their crummy treatment of customers. Also my tile was extremely delayed in terms of production. After finding their store thru hunting the right color of our existing floor, I was met with excellent staff and willingness to get what we needed. Amazingly in stock, loaded and home. This review is purely related to customer service--not on the tile and products they carry. I have been a customer at Clay Imports since 2010, and I've probably referred dozens of people their way. I'm giving only 2 stars here because they seem to be lacking some of the most basic customer service skills. I recently purchased a good amount of tile that took 7+ weeks to be made as some of it was special order (no problem there-I knew that upfront). After receiving it, we realized that we were missing important pieces and a large amount of the tile was the wrong color altogether. Normally this wouldn't be a problem at all--mistakes happen. However, the saleswoman never uttered even a simple "sorry" in all of our numerous phone calls and emails. Not once. And this was their mistake! It's just strange... I can't say I was surprised though. We had a "scheduled" appointment with the same person several months ago. We arrived on time, but she was about 20 minutes late. No apologies that time, either. It's amazing that some people in the service industry don't understand how far a "please," "thank you," and "sorry" can go. read more

Don't be fooled by the small looks from the road: This place is amazing! Their warehouse in the back is glazed-terracota-paradise! A hidden gem. I wish I had found it earlier- much better selection and quality than anywhere in town. The staff is so knowledgeable and truly helpful. They have earned our business for our home remodel projects. These folks are great. I needed specific tile for a rush repair job and checked their site gallery. I called and they had what I thought I needed in stock. Arrived to pick it up and showed them some pics and they immediately spotted that what I needed is not what I thought I needed. Got me the correct tiles, gave me tips on how to darken slightly if needed (did not, was a perfect match) and we're super helpful and friendly. I didn't get to look around much (because of being in a hurry and they were very efficient), but definitely some cool looking tile in the showroom. This place was awesome. I live in Houston and was looking for authentic Mexican/Talavera tile. They were very helpful and informative and tried to help me find the right tile for my project while keeping my budget in mind. The tile I selected wasn't in stock; however they offered to deliver it to Houston at no charge!!! I mean HAND delivered! More than I could've expected. They really care about their customers. Magnificent work! Zac did a complete remodeling of my bathroom. I imagined a welcoming, dream bathroom with a Mediterranean feel. Zac was very patient and helped me come up with the perfect design. My bathroom is beautiful with a very tasteful, lovely combination of tiles. Zac coordinated all the contracting and guided me to high quality cabinet and countertop specialists. He helped me know when to make decisions and gave expert advice. Zac's crew did beautiful work as if my home was theirs. I really appreciate their expertise and commitment to excellence. I can't tell you enough how great Clay Imports is! I started coming to the store 2 years ago for a new home build. I worked with Nick, who is fantastic, but the entire staff is always friendly and attentive. Their showroom is wonderful and they always invite you to look in the back for tiles not out front. They carry such a variety that I was able to use their tiles in my entire house. They always fulfilled the orders on time, when promised, which is huge in a new home build. I still show up to get tiles for new projects and it is great to see how much their showroom has grown. I will be a lifelong customer of Clay Imports. I normally don't write reviews unless it is something I think others really need to know. I hired Clay Imports to repair and replace Saltillo in my remodel and add new tile to an office. What I got was a terrible experience and extremely poor customer service. These guys did not finish their work, and increased the price of my tile by $2.50 per tile from estimate to invoice (without telling me). I had to have them come out multiple times to do the work (or attempt to finish their work). What's worse is that they wanted to charge me more for work they had not completed in the first place. In the end, I had to hire another contractor to complete the job. Very dissatisfied. read more

Grateful for the amazing folks at Clay Imports who helped me very patiently with a complicated order. I also was having trouble deciding which tile to choose, and they laid out a space for me to play with the different tiles until I decided (like, an hour later). If you're going for Talavera, take them up on their offer to go to the storage area and look at what they have in stock---it's a great way to view your options. They also have samples up front of tiles they can order for you. You would think that Talavera would be easy to find in this area, but not only is it not that easy to find, but if you go to the wrong place it can be high priced and low quality--touristy stuff. Their Talavera is beautiful, authentic-looking, reasonably priced, and guaranteed lead-free. They also have some unique, fun patterns. Their cement tile is also **stunning**. I love their website too---easy to navigate and see the tiles---but they told me they're updating and making some changes to it---so maybe it'll be even better!
