I have been a member for over a year and I love coming here. I started as a student and eventually transitioned to getting a membership. Beautiful clean space with a TON of glaze options and clay bodies. Lots of wheels and hand building space and love that it is 24/7, so you can work late at night if that is when you are feeling creative. Also in my opinion the kiln turnaround time is pretty quick. It is always exciting looking through the shelves and finding your pieces. I recommend starting out with a class or two so you can experience everything before committing to membership. I have been a Claytivity Sunset studio member since it opened in 2019 and it's one of the most creative, lovely, supportive spaces in Los Angeles. This place has honestly changed my life -- I have a hobby/side-hustle and community I love within walking distance! I'm visiting from Canada and had the good fortune to find this studio last time I was visiting LA. Great environment, fantastic knowledgeable studio manager and mostly well equipped pottery studio. Come 10 which I hadn't experienced before and love learning about how the new (to me) glazes interact. Membership is $200US per month (about $270 Canadian with current exchange) and clay and tools and glazing is all extra. A 1lb bowl is about $1 to glaze. Wish we had a place like this at home. Note that I've been working out of the Frogtown location and there are 2 others. I believe you can use all the studios with your membership but I may be wrong. read more

Lovely studio, lovely community! I was a member for about 2 years and found Claytivity's Silver Lake location to be one of the most welcoming and creatively supportive spaces I've ever worked in. A big perk of this studio is the electric slab roller, such a rare and appreciated upgrade from the manual ones most studios have. The overall vibe is laid-back in the best way. The staff is friendly and generally happy to answer any questions you might have, but not overbearing. An ideal environment to quietly encourage creativity. Highly recommend this studio to anyone looking for a community-centered, well-equipped, and inspiring place to work with clay. read more

This studio could have been great but, poor business management practices and the extremely rude business owner have made it clear that Claytivity doesn't care about retaining customers or running an honest operation. They advertise 24 hour access which is a lie. Communication is an absolute joke, they don't answer phones or emails and without apology- lie and try and push fault of communication on to customers with agressive attitude and entitlement. They just want your money and could care less about your experience. There are plenty of pottery studios in LA that are cost more but, are well worth it for covid saftey compliance, and a great experience. Claytivity is a terrible joke, don't waste your time or money. read more

Very disappointed. the management and communication was awful. I contacted them 4 weeks beforehand, about questions on the membership for a personal project. Cherie, was rude, impolite, and would just put down the phone as if she did not want to bother with taking phone calls. After multiple calls i got a hold of her, but she was just plain rude. Eventually, Cherie asked to send some of my work and i waited for Cherie to give me a response... and i got nothing. I understand wanting to take precautions so that other artists' hard work wouldn't be destroyed. knowledge of ceramics is clearly a basic necessity in order to be a member. coming from some years in ceramic experience, it makes sense. but being outright rude was out of the line. taylor, on the other hand was responsive to my emails and calls when i asked for an update, but ultimately she had to keep on asking Cherie to get back to me and of course, she did not. read more

Just finished a 4 week pottery class with this studio. The instructor was great. Best part for me was that they allow students to come in for additional practice outside of class time. I just signed up for another class and am looking forward to membership after that. Super clean stduio, great vibes, and overall cool people there. I have read other reviewers about not being able to get ahold of anyone but they must have fixed that because I reached out on two different occasions and had no trouble getting my questions answered timely. 10 out 10 read more

I took a beginners class here. I really enjoyed the classs, the location, and the value for the purchase. The staff was really nice and I would love to say I would take classes there again. The only thing is, I made about 7 pieces and when I came to pick them up, none of them made it to the finished pieces rack. Not a single one. So I walked away with zero pieces from the class. I was really sad about that. I've taken classes at other studios and that never happened. I still might take another class because I really liked the overall experience, it just really sucks that all my pieces were broken or lost :( read more

They do not follow covid protocols. Unfortunately I did not have a good experience. The studio is always a mess, management doesn't own up to pieces getting lost or broken, instructors are impatient and unhelpful. Management is lazy. Glazing options are minimal and an absolute disaster. Only utilize the space if you're experienced so you do not have to rely on the managers that are somehow there every single day but still shirk their duties in keeping a well-informed staff and organized/managed space. Worst of it all, management is not following with covid regulations and do not require covid test results before students take a class or before members can use the studio. There is no 6ft social distancing anywhere. All of us members are crammed inside and I will be revoking my membership. This institution should be shut down. read more

My girlfriend took me here for a date and it was really fun! The owner of the studio is really fun and super friendly, it really made the atmosphere of the ceramics class feel more like a group of friends hanging out than an actual ceramic class. This place rocks. I was always interested in working with clay but I never had the opportunity till now. I came in with zero knowledge of hand building and I came out with a mug I love. I had classes with Danielle and she was very warm and went above and beyond to make sure to answer every little question I had. I had no idea pottery would be so much fun and I'm glad I have something to look forward to every week. Time flies so quickly when you're here and I love it. Going to start my 3rd class here soon. This makes for a great birthday present. I originally brought my mom here for her birthday and she loved it as well. read more

Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience. I paid for the beginner's wheel throwing class and while the teacher was kind, I did not feel he had very much experience teaching and often felt lost. Luckily, I took ceramics in college and had some prior knowledge. Otherwise, a fellow student was able to give me more help than he was. Secondly, most of my pieces were lost and when I came to pick-up my final glazed piece which took me 1.5 hours of precision to glaze with details... it was gone. I basically got three tiny weird bowl tray type things out of the class... and very discouraged from ever doing ceramics again. Not good. read more

It's honestly astounding how this place keeps up a business. The only reasoning I can see is the location, which is, very central. But truly not worth the minefield of engaging with this studio. I was a member here for about a year, in covid pre vax. The studio held that policies were to stay masked indoors (there was an outdoor area for eating), but a group of girls would constantly come in, bring wine and snacks, and sit at the wheels or wherever near whoever with their masks down eating. I had a few interactions with one of the girls where she wanted me to break studio rules and was very rude to me when I wouldn't, so on top of the mask issue, I reported her to the studio a number of times. Response from admin was that they agreed that she was in violation of studio policy and would speak to her. To my knowledge, they never did, but it made me feel like I was within my right, when I saw her mask down eating inside again, to ask her to please pull her mask up. When she was super rude to me again, I tried to talk it out with her. Things got heated, and I was given a warning. I was on my way out of the studio anyway as I moved and was going to work at home. I ended my membership. 2-3 months later, the bookkeeper would not close my account saying that they still needed to go through the tickets to firing to see what I owed (even though I hadn't fired in the timing she was referencing). I knew that they invoiced tickets for firing in batches, in whatever timing they pleased (sometimes months later), so it's almost impossible to keep track and you'll never know when things are getting taken out of your account. But this was a lot after leaving the studio. Money was difficult for me, and I needed to know where I stood, so I kept on communication to no avail. One day, I called my bank and put a stop payment on my account to end the ordeal. I should have known that in the early days of being a member that this place was a nightmare. When everything was closed on the stretch and things would get pretty deserted and more dangerous than usual at night, most of us working late at night were women and the front has big windows that face the street. Men would bang on the windows and follow us to our cars. It was very scary. So a few of us asked if they might be able to put curtains on the windows. They said no because the "windows are advertising even at night." They care more about their advertising than the safety of their members. There was also another time that I had an issue with something being fired and one of the owners was very defensive and blamed me aggressively for the mishap. There were also a number of times where I'd ask her general clay questions and she was either argumentative or gave me the wrong answer. The owners really don't know much about clay ultimately. Also towards the end, I couldn't even get things fired right. Things were coming out cracked almost constantly. Anyway, this studio is a nightmare. It's a shame because the location is really prime. But that's really all they have going for them. I tried to rejoin the studio recently (a year after all this), because bygones and the convenience. But they told me they "couldn't provide me with membership" and didn't state a reason why when asked. They are cowards, terrible business people, unkind humans, and don't know much about clay. If you can go in, get what you need and go, bless. But keep an eye out for yourself and your bank account best you can! read more

I took a 4 week workshop and made 3 pieces which were all lost by the studio staff after the first firing. They lost two other students' pieces too. The instructor didn't allows us throw any new pieces since it was the last week of class and she was quite strict about this which was off putting since we paid to be there and leave with fires and glazed pieces. We all just left empty handed. I've taken a couple workshops at other studios and the Claytivity teacher I had wasn't great compared to other local studio teachers. She didn't teach in a way that ingrained any of the techniques. The main positives for this studio is the cleanliness and the studio hours available to non-member students. read more

LOVE CLAYTIVITY! The coolest place with such a wonderful environment. Getting to work with my hands, create things and learn a new skill was the therapy I needed. The studio is so cool and well run without being stuck up. So welcoming and supportive, a safe space to try new things and be artistic even if you're not a pro lol. You also have the freedom to practice on your own and just find your element. The space has so much room and is available to you all the time. Made me feel like a real dope ass artist (even tho I have never done pottery before lol) This place is a gem that's real and just cool. Just with one class I got to make so many bowls that I can use (that are so unique and cool looking) and have the best gifts to give. To top it off they have the best dog mascot you've ever met, this place is just such a good vibe. Highly recommend! read more

I am hesitant to write a review because I don't like leaving negative reviews on small businesses but am hoping this will help future people who come here, or maybe management at Claytivity. I have taken 2 Beginners Wheel 1 classes here. I will start with the PROS- the studio is AWESOME, I love how they have a private outdoor space for students to work! It's also really nice that they have additional open studio hours. Throwing on the wheel is SO MUCH FUN and I really loved being able to get my hands dirty. They have lots of wheels, many glazes to choose from & clean up stations which is great! If you are unable to make a class they allow a makeup class on Sunday! CONS- They are nearly impossible to get ahold of. My 2nd time taking the class I unfortunately had to miss the first class, I got the covid vaccine the day before and was extremely unwell. I emailed them immediately letting them know and asked if I could pick up my clay/tools so I could go in on Monday and catch up so I would be up to date by the 2nd class (since I had taken it before I was familiar with the curriculum). No response, I followed up via email at least 3 times. I had to resort to dm-ing them on instagram, someone replied saying someone was going to reach out to me- they never did so I had to dm again 2 days later saying no one has replied to me. I called the studio 2x- no answer. I finally emailed again and got a very cold response almost a week later, which was too late at that point for me to make up what I had missed. I know it was my fault I missed the first class but it shouldn't be this stressful or hard to get contact with someone. Perhaps it is due to covid and the teachers being unable to be hands on but I feel like both times I took the classes the majority of students were struggling a lot and there was not much guidance. I personally just love doing what I want and going at my own speed so I didn't really mind, but I feel as if by my 2nd time taking the class I should be a bit better/it would have been nice to learn more specific technique. I had to resort to learning on youtube. I have had 2 different teachers and I won't name names but one of them didn't really teach or guide all that much. My first time taking the class, once my pieces were fired I couldn't find them. They put all fired pieces on shelves- mine were NOWHERE to be found even though I had labelled them the month with three dots as students are told to do. I ended up finding them outside with a bunch of pieces that never got picked up/trash rubble. Why are my pieces that JUST got fired this week with trash outside? If I had lost them forever I would've been pretty devastated since thats the whole point of the class. Although there are open studio hours, there are a lot of classes now (you can't go during class hours) so unless you have a very flexible schedule/don't work it's pretty difficult to find time to go in. So having open studio time really didn't apply to me since I work 9-7 and there are classes every day in the evening. That is not the studios fault but just thought I would note that. Parking is simply awful- but once again not the studios fault at all! I really enjoy doing ceramics and liked this studio enough to take 2 classes, but because of the cons I'm hoping to find a different studio to attend which is a shame because I REALLY love the atmosphere at Claytivity! read more

I took my first class here. I grew up doing slab and coil classes as a kid, never got to try the wheel, so for my birthday, I bought an intro wheel class. I live so close to the studio -- what an easy thing to do! However, my decision to walk to the studio the first night was regrettable when it turned out I had to walk home with 10 pounds of clay. That's fine. I just wasn't prepared for it -- because communication was pretty much nil besides one group email with some instructions prior to the class. Even showing up for the class, it was pretty vague as to where I should go and what I should do. (Like, no simple direction like, "Wait by the fridge" or "Your teacher will be there at 7.") The instruction from our teacher and the facilities were good, although classes went a bit fast -- I definitely need a couple more classes before I make anything resembling a decent vase, that much I recognize. However, their process overall is kind of confusing. I threw eight pieces, left them for bisque, only found four of them on the other end of that process, and then only walked home with three after glazing. It's not that I wanted my lumpy-ass pots -- I'm 45, it's a little late to foist off arts and crafts projects on my dear mom -- but I wanted to glaze and hold and see the finished product. There is never ever anyone there to answer a question, alas. So I've got no clue what happened to my work. Broke in firing? Eaten by wolves? Stolen by fine art thieves? Who knows. I'd like to work more with pottery -- but even though this is .5 miles from my Silver Lake home, I don't think it will be here. I felt kinda abandoned. read more

It takes two weeks for my work to be completed. Due to the priority of their work, the member's work is postponed. Questions to them are always unclear, I recommend other studios read more
