I've been back a number of times in the intervening years, especially as I now live in the neighborhood and it's my closest yarn/knitting store. It's harder and harder to find stores stocking a lot of small indie dyers, but that kind of seems par for the course. The owner is helpful. I felt pressured to buy items while my cashier was being passive aggressive behind me. She's an old Japanese lady and idk how to write this but she enjoyed being a little mean to me and then was shocked I was about to put everything back. She gives you a bad feeling like she's trying to get away with being mean but gets scared when you put yarn back. You know those people who say just barely mean things but you have to figure out, why the interaction felt uncomfortable. Or those people who talk bad about you the moment you walk away. I didn't come here to fight with my mom. Those people who steal your happiness for your new idea. The ones you want to avoid when it doesn't have enough protection. The most vulnerable business ideas shouldn't go here. If u don't NEED yarn for money come here. If you need something NEED it, don't come here. 2 stars sales corner. read more

I've always wanted to learn to knit, and I've peeked into this magical shop a few times over the years. I love the comfy atmosphere. It feels like a calm sanctuary from the stressful bustling of life outside. I appreciate the high quality of the materials in stock. Everything seems very thoughtful. I finally admitted to myself that I probably won't teach myself with just my books anytime soon, so I recently scheduled a lesson with the owner, Kat. She charges $40 for an hour, which I found very reasonable for her expertise. She helped me select materials, explaining what works best for beginners. Throughout our lesson, she was very patient and thorough. She let me take little videos to reference later. I left the shop with the beginnings of a scarf and a smile on my face. I really look forward to scheduling another lesson after I practice what I've learned so far! read more

I really want to like this place more. I love that there is a knitting shop in the area, they have a lovely selection of yarn, and prices are reasonable. Every time I come in, I want/expect it to feel like a welcoming, inclusive third space, and instead interactions with staff always feel weird, cold, and perfunctory. I get the impression - maybe I'm way off base - that most customers are friends of the owner, and those of us who are "just" customers are barely tolerated. read more

Kat is a wonderful, knowledgeable, and friendly shopkeeper, and has taken the shop from its humble beginnings and turned it into a much larger, and extremely well stocked shop! With its quirky charm, and varied selection, it's hard not to fall in love with the space, and the neighborhood it's located in. Came in here with my girlfriend to buy two small balls of green and yellow yarn. One of the two workers kept glaring at us the entire time. The other was very short and dismissive when asking questions. The only yarn store I've ever been to where the vibes were weird and staff was rude. I signed up for a crochet class here, nearly a year ago and I was just only able to attend, today! Kat is very nice and owns a really neat space. She helped me and two others, today. She helped refresh my memory on slip stitches, single and double crochet. Kat also introduced me to the half-double crochet! I had the entire 2 hours to practice. I felt very encouraged by Kat! I took the Gold line to the Red line, got off on Vermont/Sunset, and just walked right up to her shoppe. So, it's very accessible! I was welcomed into this space from the beginning and I was told about the Friday knit nights. I was basically told not to be a stranger. Loved my experience here! read more

Since my first review I've been able to take on a range of projects with wonderful guidance from the owner, and inspiration from her carefully selected inventory of quality yarn. That plus the owner's totally accessible and supportive approach to the range of knitters who flock here, from high school students to experienced pros make The Little Knittery a local treasure! My first review from their Atwater days is below :) When I first walked past this place months ago I thought, "My god - who is brave (or foolish) enough to open a dedicated knitting shop in an age of chain stores??" Fast forward to January 2017 and feeling anxious about equality and all that good stuff, and hungry to make a pink pussy hat, but super out of practice (it had been years since I'd knitted anything). I thought maybe this shop would help me out as it was for a good cause and got the surprise of my life finding that the project had ORIGINATED there with the lovely owner, Kat. My first trip there, I'd forgotten my wallet but walked in anyway, only to be given donated yarn, helped with my cast-on and lifted by the natural camaraderie of the place and the project. I came back another day -with wallet- to make my own yarn donation, and keep knitting. I'm so happy to support this place and get to know some amazing craftspeople. It pains me to leave anything less than five stars for a knitting store since they're so few and far between and I'd really like to see them stay in business. Hopefully this will be met with a willingness by the owner to do better and I can change my review in time. I came in with my niece because she really wanted to start knitting. She had money (visibly in her hand) because she was so excited that she had saved up her money to be put into her new hobby. My niece could not have been more respectful to the owner, telling her that she was a novice, how much money she had, and looking for advice to get started. The owner was so rude that I actually had to tell my niece in the car afterward that she didn't do anything wrong and that sometimes grown ups just have bad days. She walked away with a few skeins of yarn, needles and a book but I think the owners meanness put her off on the whole endeavor. It definitely put me off. Think rude shopkeeper in Pretty Woman but make it a knitting store in Los feliz. This "holier than thou" attitude is so uncalled for in a knitting store, especially directed at a twelve year old. read more

This cozy, wonderful yarn shop has effectively gotten me back into knitting. They have an excellent selection of high quality yarn to choose from. They also have a back wall of good yarn that's on sale for 35% off. They have a few couches to sit on and knit or crochet with staff and other customers. The owner, Kat, and one of her employees, Makiko, are very friendly and knowledgeable. Both of them have helped me pick out yarn for various projects. Kat has helped me with a few projects. I always feel welcome and leave happy. My favorite yarn that I've purchased thus far has been the Loopy Mango Merino No. 5. It's very soft and they have so many colors to choose from. Looking to start a new hobby, so I opted to check out this little hidden gem. The Little Knittery is right next door for a restaurant. It's got a cute atmosphere inside and had a warm home feeling. During Covid, not many people are allowed inside. I called ahead to make sure they were open, they are. Parked on the street, metered parking (Sunday is free parking in LA). The pieces inside are all crafted very nicely. Lots of supplies available along with clothing, purses etc. The pricing is fair. About nine months ago, I decided I wanted to learn how to knit. My only experience up to then, had been dishcloths. So, I looked for teachers / shops in my area, and, was fortunate enough to find The Littel Knittery. I called to ask about lessons, and then proceeded to go there with examples of my dishcloths in hand. Upon entering the shop, I was quite taken with the absolutely beautiful array of yarns. There were so many beautiful colours, and different kinds of yarn. I instantly knew this was a high quality shop. There was something for anyones taste. I found the owner Kat Coyle, let her know I had called earlier, and showed her my dishcloths. She could not have been more charming. I explained, that I wanted to try to, actually, knit a sweater, and if she thought I might with lessons, manage that. She told me that she thought I could, and asked if I had a pattern in mind. Of course I hadn't thought that far, and decided that I wanted to knit something like a little Chanel top I had. We arranged a time, and she told me to bring the top with me. I arrived at my appointed time, top in hand. The first thing we did was pick a yarn. This is where, I was instantly impressed with her. She could have sold me any kind or yarn, (that is to say something expensive, after all we were using my Chanel top as a guide.) Instead, she showed me some lovely soft cotton. Much cheaper than other yarn, and if I hated knitting, a minor expense. That was nine or ten months ago, I haven't looked back, and I have now knit more garments than I can remember. Everyone of them is really beautiful. I guess perhaps it's easy, when you have a professional helping you. However, teaching someone takes patience, and encouragement, Kat, has show she has an abundance of both. I feel so, so, lucky, to have found not only the perfect teacher, but also the perfect shop. I can't imagine, I would ever have to try and find another yarn shop to purchase from. I came into the Little Knittery about a week and a half ago to make a last minute quick-knit pussy hat for the Second Annual Women's March! In the spirit of the day, I wanted to support a local business and make my pussy hat out of a high-quality material. The retail store on Vermont in Los Feliz had just opened, and the owner and a few of her friends were finalizing the setup of the space, which is absolutely gorgeous--high ceilinged, bright, cozy, quirky, and cheery--a knitter's paradise! There is a long dining table in the middle of the room, surrounded by several delightful vintage chairs, where the owner hosts classes and "open knit night" on Friday evenings. My shopping experience was pleasant, albeit brief, as I knew I had to get knitting before the march! The owner was immensely attentive and excited to show off her merchandise. It's definitely no Joann's or Michael's--all of her stock is carefully selected and of the highest quality, so it's a bit pricey when compared to cheap materials you find at the big stores, but the prices are fair and shouldn't surprise an experienced knitter/crocheter/fiber artist. There is also a nice big sale section in the back for anyone on a budget. Apart from the friendliness of the owner and her friends, the nicest part of my visit was the owner's offer to wind the skein of Malabrigo I purchased. I didn't end up taking her up on the offer, opting instead to do it myself in front of the BBC that night...but I wish I had! I had forgotten how finicky Malabrigo worsted could be, so easily tangled when wound by hand. This was definitely a lovely touch of customer service you only get from a LYS! I was saddened today after my negative experience at The Little Knittery. I was completely planning on purchasing a sweater quantity of yarn but left after being being treated rudely by the owner. I have considered taking classes here several times, but the unpleasantness of the staff has always dissuaded me from signing up. Today was really the clincher, and what sent me sprinting toward Yelp. I have a crocheted throw that needs some minor repairs. I spoke to my dry cleaner about it and they sent me to TLK. I thought 'okay, maybe I've gotten the wrong impression of these ladies', and I decided to give it a shot. From the moment I walk in, they proprietress is shooting daggers at me, and saying may I help you over the loudest cowbell door-chime in history. After the bell pipes down, I explain the issue with the throw. The women seated around the table (customers/class attendees I assume) were actually quite pleasant and complimented the throw. The proprietress (with the long hair) calls over their crochet expert (lady with short hair) who proceeds to round the corner shouting that it's not a repair shop. I said I get that, but my dry cleaner referred me, and if they'd like me to leave, no worries. Long haired proprietress is super-defensive and explains that I'm the third person to come in asking for repairs today. Still not sure how that's my problem, I proceed with a joke about dry cleaners. Short hair asks me if the throw is wool (it's so very obviously acrylic, and I don't even knit) and then says she can do it, but her fee is 22$/hour. I said that's fine, so long as I have a projected idea of how long it's going to take. I said that it wasn't worth it if it was a 3 hour gig, because 60 bucks is more than I paid for it. She hemmed and hawed for a minute and I said simply if it's an hour or two, we are good, but otherwise I'll watch a Youtube video and do it myself. She suggested I do that, handing my throw back, because she wouldn't want to go longer than her estimate and make it so I would have "hard feelings." Okay. I smiled and exited but truly, I'm glad she gave up on me. I'm sure the whole thing would have ended it tears had I actually gone with TLK for the repair. The place seems as if it would be so cosy and homey. It's also close to everything, and of course now they've capitised on the whole pussyhat thing and customers are streaming in, but I encourage you to check out Gather DTLA or some other alternative shop. PS...Preferably one where the yarn is price marked. read more

The people who work at this store are unwelcoming. Buying materials for a project is not enough. They insist that you take a class to acquire the smallest of skills. They have no grace and no class. Today I was verbally abused by an overbearing assistant who falsely claimed I asked for help with materials I had brought from home. This was a boldfaced lie. I bought yarn for three hats and the accompanying needles. She yelled like a screw, in a store full of people. Unbelievable. While knitting is a friendly, meditative pastime, the owner and her employees are penny pinchers with ornery dispositions. I will gladly take my money elsewhere. There's a great store in Pasadena with wise proprietors who know that when you are helpful and nurturing, customers gladly spend money over and over again. read more

This is a wonderful place for both tourists and locals. You should have somewhat an interest in knitting and I'll tell you why ... The staff is extremely friendly. They have lots of options for yarn. They have some AMAZING artists on staff - like the helicopter interwoven into the spider's web all done through a crochet technique (wow) Great classes AND they are the originators of the pink pussy hats that were prolific during the LA Women's March. For tourists it's a wonderful place to take a class and get to know the LA culture. For locals it's an awesome hidden gem, with lots of history in the area. read more

Took a private, 2 hour knitting class today. I left feeling like I had the basics but all told it was a rather unpleasant experience. The woman who taught my private lesson (Kathleen I believe) was about as warm as an ice cave. All questions were answered briefly, listlessly and (in hind sight) incompletely. NOTHING I said or did to be friendly could warm this poor woman up. She was having a bad day or just didn't like me? I kinda hope so (though I don't generally have that effect on people) because I would hate to think she goes through life being that miserable/mean all the time. Note: The yarn here is fancy and the prices are too. On the instructors recommendation I purchased two balls of imported baby alpaca yarn (to the tune of $17 PER SKEIN / $32 total) for use in our class / for my first project. Reading online I now realize that it is typically recommended that one uses an inexpensive yarn (acrylic or wool) for one's first project (e.g. a $3-$5 ball of yarn). Kind of a waste to use a yarn that expensive for a first / learning project and kind of leaves me feeling a wee bit ripped off. Never going back here again. read more

Quaint little shop, but that's all that can be positively said. Due to the shops size, yarn selection is very limited so call in advance to check if they have what you need. Also, the help there isn't so helpful. For example: If I'm the only one in the cramped shop and I get absolutely no assistance, then something is severely wrong with the service. More insulting, if I ask for help, and all I get is a shrug, I'm never coming back. Perhaps I wasn't "hipster" enough? When a more hipster looking gal walked in she received the sun, moon, and stars from the sales girl. The disparity in assistance was clear and I understood that they preferred a certain type of person to shop in their store. Just understand that not everyone will be welcomed. I wanted to drop a few hundred that day, but with the experience I had I went to a shop in South Pasadena instead. There are better yarn shops in Los Angeles that one can attend in terms of customer service and selection; however, I'm sad to say that The Little Knittery is not among them. read more

Really cute store, pretty yarn, and incredibly helpful service. The selection is not huge, but then again it isn't a huge store, and what they did have seemed to be nice quality. The sales girl gave me lots of help and suggestions while I picked out yarn as a gift for someone, and she patiently untangled, unwound, rewound, and combined several bundles of yarn that I'd bought, and did so with ease and dexterity. While I browsed, I listened to her spend a lot of time giving tips and instructions to a couple of other customers who needed help with their cast-ons and stitches. I'm inspired to take up knitting after coming here! Apparently they have free beginners classes the first Sunday of every month and it sounds like such a peaceful way to start a Sunday afternoon! On a side note and now that I have something to go by, some of these other 2 star reviews seem oddly draconian. Two stars for having a smaller selection and no price tags? Really?! The selection of yarn was very limited including color and type of material. No prices tags were on the merchandise. I recently taught myself to crochet, and upon seeing a Groupon for TLK, I took the beginners knitting class as well. The shop is very small; smaller than my bedroom, but there is still a wide selection of nice yarns. Since I'm a beginner, I am no yarn expert, but if I recall correctly, most were $10-20, averaging in the $13-16 range. I ended up buying a chunky wool, and a baby alpaca yarn. I loved the chunky wool, which was $20 (highend for me, the $2 Michael's shopper), but I quickly made a scarf and 2 fingerless gloves with it, so that was nice. The lesson was great I can't remember the instructors name, but it wasn't the owner, Julie. Julie was there, running the shop and helping other customers etc. Both associates were very knowledgeable and helpful, and were able to tell you how much yarn you would need for simple projects. I learned to cast-on, knit and purl. And successfully did so! I've only since knitted a scarf, as it seems I prefer crochet at the moment. I am still a bit slow at knitting, but my own practice should help that. The instruction was very clear, and hands-on. There were 7 people in my class. There is no parking lot, but there is plenty of metered street parking around. I will definitely be back when I am looking for nicer yarns! They also have a frequent buyer program -- I think buy 20 get 1 free. It's a punch card. read more

What a lovely shop! My friend and I took a crochet class at the Little Knittery (total 3 sessions) and I can say that I am officially hooked (get it?) Kat was a great instructor, so patient with our learning process. I love the vibe of the shop which is so fitting with the neighborhood. If I could, I'd quit everything and come here to crochet and talk life with everyone that comes by. My sister took me here when I was in town last weekend to check it out. It is her local knitting store. The owner shares a space with another person who sells the cutest little makeup bags. I also walked away with a great fabric knitting needle pouch. The selection is limited but there is a great bargain bin with sale yarn as well as helpful staff who will assist you with your project. They did have a large variety of knitting needles, especially the Bamboo type. Cute space, nice staff, lots of trinkets to buy and love. read more

Adorable knitting shop and delightful owner! I took the free beginner class on Sunday morning with Julie. She taught us to cast on, knit and purl and offered to help us as we got further along in our project. I definitely went back to learn to change yarns and for help fixing a giant mistake! I did NOT have any trouble finding prices for yarn (and if I did I would just ask =)). While the store is quite small, I thought the selection was lovely. I don't know how prices compare to elsewhere, but if they are a little higher, I'm happy to pay for the service and experience I've received here. read more
