Sparktac, honey cake, raspberry mousse, and Italian cake
    Jennifer R.

I had seen some of the desserts for Cle Doree on social media via Facebook, and I had to try them. They all looked so delicious and well presented. We took them home and tried a few of them. We ordered the Sparktac, honey cake, raspberry mousse cake, and the Italian cheesecake. I have to say that the desserts look better than they taste. If you're looking for sweet treats, it's definitely here, but you can't order too much and take them home because the cake tends to get dry after a few days. The service was quick and friendly since we ordered at the counter, and were given our order as soon as we placed them. Although let me tell you, we had a difficult time finding this location since it's located in the back of a parking lot in downtown Mt. Airy. The ambiance is casual and quite small with a few table and chairs. There is a nice selection on display of Italians drinks, teas, and bottled waters. I would like to try other items on their menu sometime, but I only gave this place three stars because I wasn't a fan of the deserts I tried.

If ever there was a serendipitous find - this is the one. By sheer luck (for us) we found this gem of a place in Mount Airy (about 15 minutes East of Fredrick Maryland ) while driving back home to Leesburg (about 45 minutes South West of Mount Airy). The reason I specify the location is that in our opinion this amazing bakery is worth the trip from either Fredrick or Leesburg, and of course whenever you are driving I-70 near Fredrick Md in either direction. Describing in words the exquisite taste of Julia's creations (let alone the presentation) is certain to prove unjust, and even the pictures will not do the trick. However they are a start - check our box with an assortment of what our eyes would not let us leave at the store, having tasted some of them on location. We can attest to the palatable use of nothing but superb quality ingredients, fully explained to us in great details by Julia, only making it harder to pick one This by itself was a very unexpected gesture we have never experienced anywhere before. To accompany the delicious recommended Mango Roulette we had a fantastic serving of fresh French Press coffee with delicious heavy cream. The place itself is unassuming - immaculate, simple yet warm, stylish, and inviting. Julia and other very friendly staff made us feel wanted and welcome. The bakery is favored and frequented by the local community, which is always a good sign which we witnessed while sitting there. Like we mentioned - this place warrants a 45 minutes drive any time, and if you live anywhere closer don't even think twice - just try it and you'll be hooked like us!

This is a small place set back off of Main Street in Mt. Airy. Look for the sign so that you know which parking lot to turn into. We got the gateau eclair and the Kyevskiy tort. The gateau eclair literally has eclair cream puffs as part of the filling and has a little puff on top. The puff was overflowing with pastry cream. The tort was excellent, too. The crumbly and nutty texture, buttery filling, and beautiful chocolate on top were all delicious. The woman at the counter suggested letting the cake sit out for at least 15 minutes to get the best taste. We split the eclair cake one night and refrigerated the tort and ate it after dinner the next night (after letting it sit outside the fridge for more than 15 minutes). Both items were rich and delicious without being overly sweet. This is definitely a dish worth driving to! And the person who helped me also came out from behind the counter to get the door for me, as I was carrying my toddler with me. If there is a downside, it is the price. It was a total of $18 for my two items. In my opinion, it is worth paying for a good quality treat like this.

I am not a macaron connoisseur. In fact, I'll eat (and enjoy) pretty much any macaron you throw my way. But I know special when I taste it, and Clé Dorée's macarons are special. First, they're a smidge larger than the usual ones you pick up at your local French patisserie. More macaron = more happiness. Second, rather than having a flavored buttercream filling, they have a rich concentrated jam. All 3 flavors of the day were great, but mango was by far my favorite. Growing up in Asia, one of my favorite snacks was dried mango, which had a concentrated sweet/tart flavor and that macaron matched it perfectly. Another thing you should try are the Mille Crêpes. They're best described as stacked crepes with whipped pastry cream separating the layers. Delicate, but substantial. The raspberry mascapone one I had was like if a soft cheesecake and crepe had a baby. A delicious, creamy baby. The couple who run the bakery are friendly and happy to answer any questions about their pastries. P.S. The location may be easy to miss since it's not directly on Main St. Basically, turn into the parking lot that's next to Cryin' Johnnie's and The Upper Deck. The bakery is at the top of the lot.

The pastries and croissants are so delicious! The eclairs were generously filled, the meringue roulette raspberry was my favorite, the carrot cake frosting was probably the best cream cheese frosting I've ever had - light and creamy and a very generous amount of it; the spartak and creme cacao were hits with the my daughters. everything was so good. Will definitely be back!

Two of the pastries. A basic looking place with so many lovely pastries.

If ever there was a diamond in the rough, Cle Doree fits that description. Located in a unassuming little house at the back of a busy parking lot of a quintessential small American town, you walk into Cle Doree to find you could be standing in front of the highest of high-class Paris Bakery display cases. The food is as much a feast for the eyes at it is for your mouth. We had a selection of items (because, well, you really can't decide!) and each was delicious! French Macaron, éclair, Ukrainian honey cake ... each bite a treat. I will definitely be back (and back, and back again, and again ....). They sell out, so get there early if you can!

On our last stop, we tried the Cinnamon Roll Cupcake, the S'mores Cupcake and the Kitchen Sink Cupcake. All were amazing, especially the loaded Kitchen Sink variety. Their prices are fair ($3 - $4 per cupcake) and the people attending the store have been pleasant on each of our stops. There is no place to sit and I did not see that they offered hot beverages. So it is strictly a place to pick up your treats and go. The location is a little tricky. The only reason we found it the first time we stopped was due to the fact that we were moving between Chick-fil-A and Starbucks. Otherwise, it's tucked away a little bit and not easy to notice on a casual stop when visiting the establishments that comprise the major attractions at this exit (fast food and gas). But it's worth the stop if you know it's there.

They made sure to ask questions for the birthday cupcake order that I placed that I had not even considered when I initially made the inquiry. Cupcakes were made exactly as requested and promptly provided at the designated time in quality containers that kept them intact during transit with no concerns of tipping or smooshing. We will absolutely be ordering here for any other upcoming special occasion.

I look forward to revisiting and trying their lunch and dinner options too as they looked equally as good. The long and short, the food is fantastic. It's good quality and great flavour. Where some improvements could be made is the condiments or sides, eg: better orange juice instead of what tasted like a concentrate and real maple syrup instead of fake. What we got: Legendary French Toast - 5* fluffy, delicious, and super filling. Country Fried Steak - 3.5* the gravy was amazing (can't wait to try their biscuits and gravy), the potatoes were fried perfectly and improved with self applied salt and pepper, the biscuits were delicious (though jam options could be improved), and the eggs were cooked the way we asked. The steak was good initially but got old fast, it was salty and a tad overcooked and we were glad we were splitting both meals because eating the whole serving would've been hard.

It was a lovely evening the night we went, so we ate outside. I started off with a Raspberry mule. I believe our server may have forgotten about it because I didn't get it until right before our meal arrived. But it was really good and a great bargain for $7. For dinner I had the shrimp tacos, the shrimp was blackened and it was served with a slice of avocado and sriracha mayonnaise. It had a good flavor and the right amount of spice. My husband had the Chesapeake omelette which was served with spinach, lump crab meat, mozzarella and a Chesapeake sauce. He said his dish was delicious. This was our second time here and it will not be our last.

Some are hit or miss; some like Cryin' Johnnies are very good. Have had several of their hot dogs and flavor wise they do not suck. My go to has always been the Chicago dog. The don't use Vienna Beef dogs but Dietz and Watsons aren't bad. They also don't use poppy seed buns so the taste is a bit different. Tonight I ordered two (missed breakfast and lunch - sue me!). I had to order sport peppers (one of the defining flavors of a real Chicago dog) which was a surprise, the celery salt was missing, and the dogs themselves were cold. May have been the weather, may have been the ride home, but definitely cold. Good taste though (did I mention D&W?). I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because I've really enjoyed them in the past. May update - or even delete - this post the next time they come to our 'hood. I also consumed a very good but largely congealed order of Bacon & Cheese Fries. Diane ate a large, elongated Corn Dog, which was fine.
