The quality of the food went down significantly from the last time I was here. Service is still decent, as always, and the overall atmosphere is great, with plenty of screens to watch sports, a well-curated craft beer selection, and tables that are kept sparkling clean and very comfortable. My friend's food looked pretty good. I had their fish and chips, which unfortunately does not come with coleslaw. Everything was overcooked. The fish was at least hot, indicating it was cooked to order. But the fries (wedges) were not even lukewarm and tasted like they were sitting there for a long while. Extremely disappointing. As I was walking out I saw people having fries that looked perfectly cooked and fresher. So I thought maybe I just got unlucky. I understand they get busy during lunch. But to serve food in such an inconsistent manner is just not acceptable, especially when you're paying almost $17 plus tip, for three little pieces of fish. Terrible food. An extra star for good service and the ambiance is great. Everything is either premade from a can or from the freezer. The menu literally says it is Ortega chili so you know that's from a can. The chicken wings are the precooked kind you get from a bag in the freezer isle and just reheat. Okay...for starters our cheese bread was not cooked enough (soft). Always remember to ask for your dressing in the side or you end up with soggy lettuce. Ordered buffalo wings (all flats) and received cold wings that were both flats and drumsticks. Charged for ranch and didn't get the ranch. Drinks were good and bartender was super nice. This place is great to watch any type of sports game you would want. Dodgers and football are the most popular, so get there early to get a table. Their food is pretty good, as long as you get a burger or an appetizer. Their chili is really good and they put it on almost anything. The garlic bread is by far the most famous and is so delicious. I never expected to review a place I've been coming to since I was a kid, but Clearman's Galley, "The Boat," in San Gabriel deserves every glowing adjective--and then some. This spot holds a special place in my memory, and remarkably, much of what made it great when I was young still shines today. Walking in feels like coming home. The atmosphere--slightly nautical, slightly sporty, a bit boisterous--still hums with that friendly buzz. The staff are warm, on top of things, and they somehow balance hospitality with that casual "local dive" energy that makes you feel welcome. The Burger (with chili, or on the side) If there's one thing I'd crown them for, it's one of the best burgers you can get in the area. Their classic cheeseburger comes with chili by default (they pile on their signature in-house chili over a fresh, never-frozen 100% beef patty, lettuce, tomato, and Thousand Island spread). But here's my secret: I often ask for the chili on the side, just so I can control the ratio--dip when I want, taste the pure burger when I don't. Even without drowning it, the patty is juicy, well-seasoned, and holds up under the extras. If you're feeling indulgent, try the double cheeseburger with chili -- same formula, more heft. The bun is soft but sturdy, and nothing feels soggy or sloppy (even as the chili melts in). Grilled Cheese & Fries Don't skip the grilled cheese--technically listed as their Three-Cheese Grilled Cheese Sandwich--which stacks pepper jack, American, and another cheese (melted beautifully) between crisp, buttery-grilled bread. On their online ordering menu it shows up as "Large Half and Half" (red cabbage + salad mix) as a side or add-on. SpotOn The crisp cabbage gives a satisfying crunch, and it plays beautifully against their richer dishes. It's become my go-to "light anchor" to offset burger + fries. Consistency Through the Years What's most impressive is how much of the original character and quality has held up. The chili still tastes homemade -- deep, savory, with a nice balance of spices and meat. Their menu still feels familiar: burgers with chili, steak, sandwiches, specials, salads -- the same stalwarts that kept me sneaking in here as a kid. I went here on 11/14/25 which is friday and it was not bad. The steak in the steak salad was a bit overcooked. I also got a steak sandwich that was ok but kinda plain and yet again, a bit overcooked. I feel like the steak sandwich could taste better. The steak sandwich had onions, buns, steak (of course), lettuce, some fries, and tomato. The bun on the steak sandwich tasted like it wasnt cooked before the assembled it. The workers are also pretty nice and havent seen them do anything bad. Although the food wasnt the best, the entertainment was. There were tv's with football games, basketball games, and probably baseball games before the season ended. They also have game machines for your kids to play if you have any. The cost 4 quarters each which might be a bit overpriced... By one of the exits, they have animatronics which are characters from mickey mouse, and they are dressed in christmas clothes. There are booths, stools, and tables which are good because different people like different type of seating. The bathrooms are usually clean which is always a great thing. Date: February 18, 2024 Server: Dawn Hubs has been wanting to go here for ages now and we finally got the chance to stop by after the lunar festival at Santa Anita race track. It was very difficult finding out to get to the parking lot and also very difficult finding the entrance to the place (because we couldn't find the parking lot). I ended up parking across the street and walking over and entering from their back patio! Luckily the exit doors were open. Our serve dawn was amazing and so patient as we had three kiddos with us running around. We opted for outdoor seating bc of the kiddos and it was just nice to be outside too. The fountain drinks are refillable which is a plus for hubs. They have tons of tv all around and the food menu was awesome! 1. Beef dip sandwich- I got this one! It was a little lacking in flavor but overall a good sandwich. 2. Fish and chips- my toddler loved this one! Super juicy fish and French fries were also nice and crispy. 3. Clam chowder in sourdough bread- I was super excited about this one but was super let down. It tasted the same as a can of clam chowder and the bread was all soft and soggy off the bat. . 4. Hot wings & double cheeseburger - hubs loved both of these! Overall lovely little place. Great ambiance and family friendly which is always a plus. Many tables outside and inside. You go up to the register to order your food and grab your number and go sit at your table much like a diner café, same with the drinks you go up to the bar or do your drink and bring it back to your table. It's an interesting concept, but it works with this restaurant. Much like the Northwoods inn the cabbage salad and the cheese bread are definitely the best. The rest of the food is like your typical bar food. The buffalo wings could've been much crunchier they were definitely soggy The burger was pretty good. The onion rings are good to. Went yesterday to share a meal with my mom. We hadn't eaten here since 2021. I was looking forward to the cheeseburger, onion rings, and salads. We shared the meal which was plenty. We even took home food we couldn't finish. It was still delicious, but definitely different. I missed the original chili taste. Something was just a little off. Everything else was delicious. Service was ok. Only about 5 tables of people yet it took a bit of time to get our food. Could have been hotter. We will definitely give it another try. We came here on a Saturday afternoon around 3:30 PM for a last minute family get together. It was busy since there was a NFL game on but there were a good amount of seats open (you find your own table after you order) and a short line to order our food. We were happy to be able to watch the game on the many tvs, including the 2 big screens, but it was very loud so kind of hard to have a conversation with the people at your table. I've grown up eating at Clearman's restaurants including "The Boat" which is basically a casual, natural theme sports bar and restaurant and I have to say the food is always consistent and hits the spot when you're craving it, especially the cheese bread and salads. In addition to the a large salad (ordered 1/2 green salad with their house blue cheese and 1/2 red cabbage) we ordered chili burgers (chili on the side since I shared with my picky kid) fries that are more like small potatoes wedges, extra slices of cheese bread, and a beer. I had to order the beer separate at the bar, but the walk up line was short so not a big deal. While they have pretty limited healthy options, we went there knowing we wanted burgers and I left there stuffed but satisfied. Only concern today was the servers were a little too quick to clean up our table and took my drink before I was finished, but other than that it was a great meal. read more

I have been going here for 40 years and I will not go back. I ordered the burger which was awful. The meat was hard and tasteless. Like the meat was just unfrozen. The salads are great and when I wanted more dressing they charged me for it. I had an order to go which they served to eat at the restaurant and they forgot the fries which had been paid for. Just a disaster as the server could see that there was no one at the table. They could have also used more help at the order desk. Last issue is that it is noisy with the TVs on with sports. The best place for all of your sports viewing enjoyment! That line sounds so professional, LOL. When you first walk in, you'll order your food and nonalcoholic beverage take a number find a seat. Then the action begins against the back wall is a bar the length of the place where you can order your alcoholic beverage and they make them just right. They even make my espresso martinis yes! The food is really good especially the half-and-half salad which is a Clearman's must have. Service is pretty good.
