This review is based on our experience in Ms. Alexis' Primary A/B ballet class…read more Firstly, I want to give Ms. Alexis a 5 star rating on how well she works with young girls. She was able to magically sweep my 5-year-old daughter away into a fairytale land where she imagined all of her favorite things and learned proper ballet techniques, strengthened and stretched her body, and had fun dancing with her friends. She loved it so much, we wished it was more than once a week and didn't stop for summer break. Something I would like to see more of is the teaching of short dance routines after all of the typical exercises they do. One thing that many of the parents were dissatisfied with was how often there was a substitute teacher, and the general lack of communication there was regarding class schedules and offerings from the office. I hope this review will help you in deciding which program to put your child in, and will provide the school some insite into our experience. We're looking forward to returning for the upcoming fall session!

The ballet class was already past its scheduled end time, so we waited until the students finished before passing through. Halfway across the room, the ballet teacher suddenly began yelling at us aggressively. My daughter was terrified. I calmly asked her to lower her voice, but she continued screaming--following us into the gymnastics room in front of dozens of children. I have a heart condition and began feeling unwell from the stress, yet she would not stop. No staff intervened. I assumed the school would handle it properly, but I was wrong. Later, the owner defended the teacher, accused me of being a "criminal," and took zero responsibility. The real victims were my daughter and the many children who witnessed this unprovoked outburst. Parents should be aware of three serious concerns: 1. Poor safety - No security, unattended front desk, and children can easily wander outside to the street. I personally saw a 6-year-old disappear for 20 minutes. 2. Emotionally unstable ballet teacher - Multiple online reviews mention her history of yelling at kids when parents aren't present. 3. Unprofessional management - Canceled classes without notice, no accountability, and intimidation tactics from the owner, Serge. I regret not calling the police that day. If I had, maybe fewer children would be subjected to this behavior. Parents, please protect your children. A school should be a safe, nurturing place--not one where kids are traumatized and parents are threatened.

My daughter has had classes with Marina, Yelena, and Taylor and they're all wonderful. I've also taken some adult beginner classes with Marina and Yelena that I really enjoyed. The owner, Serge, is easily accessible and always willing to listen to any feedback or concerns I have. Operationally, there's some room for improvement but overall we've been really happy here and have seen a lot of progress over the last year.

We've been with this hālau for several years now, and it has been an incredible experience…read more Authentic hula, beautiful choreography, and live musicians straight from Hawaiʻi for our semi-annual shows. Kumu goes above and beyond for the keiki, hosting a free two-week summer camp where they learn ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and deepen their hula skills through dedicated practice -- capped off with a celebration party. I've witnessed the keiki grow year after year, eventually graduating to the older levels and carrying the tradition forward.

The reviews are for her on coordinating performances and to the students who danced; not Kumu Chase Chang. Unfortunately, there was a month's long fall-out between Chase and Kehau. I was not with the halau when things went awry; but I read the drama as he blasted her on his Facebook page for months. I saw him have it out with three other students who he referred to as Hiwa (translates black pig, evil, dark) which was also displayed on his FB page. COMMUNICATION: Chase's communication with students & parents is primarily done via Facebook, (& Messenger when he is looking for a penalty fee). Personally, I find official communication via FB confusing and disorganized especially since was part of three different halau-related FB groups and never sure where to find reliable updates. I do feel this method undermines effective communication and, ultimately, trust in his leadership. REQUIREMENTS: If anyone is interested in going to this halau, you should know that he will tell you that he owns your hair (no cutting it); I have heard it many times. You will be required to participate in a Hoike (performance) roughly every 6 months. For every Hoike, every student is required to sell 15 tickets ($300 total) or $600 if you have 2-kids taking classes. Costume material, construction, adornments and other implements will also cost several hundred dollars. This halau does not have their own Hawaiian band; nor does he have a kane group (male dancers) anymore. EXPERIENCE: I deeply regret enrolling my daughters, age 13 and 15 at this hula school. Kumu Chase made unprofessional and harmful remarks, suggesting that my 13-year-old "looked autistic" and repeatedly labelled my 15-year-old as a lesbian. When she said she wasn't, he was heard saying, "whatever girlfriend." These comments are not only irrelevant and offensive but can be damaging to kids. He is not their friend, or a cool uncle, he is older and should be professional for his age. KULEANA: or responsibility of the Kumu is to uphold the training, guidance, and support of their Haumana/students. But Chase speculates & comments on students' identities and mental health (?). He also discusses his personal political views with minors & online, which is also inappropriate and crosses professional boundaries. I have no respect for him, but for the love of hula, I hope he can reflect on these concerns to prevent grievance to other students and families.

When I say this place is worth your time, let me elaborate…read more The staff and kind and understanding. The teachers and assistants are professional, empathetic and patient. I say this because kids are little people who deserve just as much respect and understanding and communication as adults do. When my child had an accident her teacher comforted her and positively and showed her so much empathy. I mean this was only her first time being around her. Wow! This is the type of establishment that deserves our hard earned dollars. My little person felt so reassured and comfortable with her teacher. If this isn't enough, let me tell you about their loaner area. If you for some reason need to borrow shoes because of finances or your child forgot theirs... they have an area dedicated to this and you can donate your little ones shoes that no longer fit them. THAT to me is just HEARTWARMING. This place is a complete gem and I am so glad I didn't go with other studios we tried. Omg I almost forgot, to try a class, guess how much the fee is (since every place is pretty much charging now), it's $0. That's how it should be. At least when I took my older kids that's how it used to be. Let's be honest you should be able to see if a class/school is a good fit and not go broke trying different places. I'm telling you, this is THEE STUDIO.
