Cleaver's is a good spot for a quick bite to eat. It's a Chicago style restaurant with matching aesthetics. I've been here countless times, and it keeps me coming back. The food is hit or miss depending on what you get. However, when it hits it's amazing. The fish tacos were amazing and a great value. Other times, the food is dry or unseasoned. The water also always tastes like chemicals so I usually get a coffee. The service is never bad, but there is sometimes a bit of a language barrier. Ate here for the first time ever today for breakfast. Great experience from start to finish. We were greeted and seated quickly. Our meals arrived promptly. Everything was delicious. Some friends met here for breakfast on a Wednesday morning. I had never been here and didn't realize they even served breakfast. As soon as we came in, they showed us to our table and were quick to bring our coffee and water. The place was not very busy, but it was 8:30 on a weekday. It is a nice and spacious restaurant. The breakfast menu is large. I ordered the Eye Opener which included two eggs (your choice of how you wanted them cooked) with choice of ham, bacon or sausage. Also included are choices of hash browns, home fries or fruit, and choice of toast or pancakes. I decided on scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries and pancakes. Our food arrived fast and looked quite appealing. Everything was delicious. The eggs were done perfectly as was the bacon and the home fries. The pancakes (two) were large and soft and fluffy and again so tasty. The server came over several times to check to refill our coffees and waters. We enjoyed our breakfast in this clean and bright environment. The only negative was the cost. With tax and tip my breakfast came to $25. And to be honest there's not a lot of other places in the city to choose from besides the most generic chains out there. Really disappointing that there's not more in the city. We were super hungry so we kinda went for it and overindulged. My sister had a country fried steak with hash browns, pancakes, and scrambled eggs. She couldn't come close to finishing. I ordered a corned beef sandwich and a Maxwell Street Polish Sausage. I barely finished. They were both excellent. The total bill was only $42.62 plus tip. I was pleased with that. I would eat here A LOT if I lived nearby. I couldn't more highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for comfort food or greasy spoon kind of stuff. I have driven by this place for years while visiting Evansville. Finally decided to stop by and give it a try. We are glad we did. We got there at 11:00 on a Saturday so they gave us the lunch and breakfast menu. We opted for lunch but everyone around us eating breakfast sure looked good, especially the skillets. I ordered the gyro with fries and my wife the Greek salad. My gyro was huge with a lot of meat, onions, and tomatoes on a pita. In fact there was so much I left most of the pita. My wife loved her salad which came with grilled chicken, tons of feta cheese, olives, and other vegetables. We had three people constantly checking on us and keeping our drinks filled and the table clean. The Chicago skyline on their building is really neat, especially at night. On a recent trip to Evansville we decided to forego our usual Sunday lunch soup/salad/sandwich eateries and try something new...and Cleaver's was the winner. We know nothing about this restaurant other than we saw it when driving by on the back to our hotel and thought "Hey, what's this? Let's try it!" The place has an amazing street presence, with the front of the building sporting an artistic view of the Chicago skyline in relief. Pretty sharp looking place from the outside. We were wondering what we'd see on the inside. Walking in the door is a spot of congestion. The "Wait here to be seated" area is the same as the "Pay here" area, so people paying were crowded by people standing waiting for a seat. It was also very loud. The restaurant has a variety of standard table and high-tops (we're very much high-top table diners). Our server eventually came around to great us and gave us breakfast menus. Jim (That's Me!) doesn't eat breakfast food often so I asked for a lunch menu, which took about another 10 minutes to get to me. Both menus are multi-page menus with a large variety of offerings. And the place is very loud. Food delivery time was about 25 minutes. Generally in a place like this it's not quite that long, but the place was packed and the line to be seated was probably 6 to 10 deep during the entirety of our visit so I can understand the delivery delay. As much as I'm not generally a breakfast food eater, I'm a sucker for a skillet that's got bacon and jalapeños cooked with eggs and cheese. It was server VERY hot (double-plated, in fact) and was still steaming when it reached our table. My wife had a basic eggs/toast/bacon breakfast which was also served hot. And loud. The place is very loud. Very loud in that "I'm sorry, I can't hear what you're saying" across the table kind of way. Seriously. The place could benefit from some sound baffling. Our server was pretty passive and needed to be flagged down for everything (extra napkins, iced tea refills), including our check. In order to pay we had to cross the streams with those who were waiting to be seated (once again, a bad arrangement). Not a bad visit at all and I think Cleaver's has a lot of potential. I don't know how old it is, but I have a feeling it hasn't been there long. If we're ever in the area we'll probably stop by again. read more

Came here for breakfast and it was all delicious and very plentiful. It didn't take very long from ordering till we were served. I liked my pecan waffle but would have preferred the waffle to be a bit more crispy and it really isn't loaded with pecans as I thought it would be. The syrup is just regular ole fake maple tho. Next time I will try the banana foster waffles. My husband had the eye opener and really like everything. Coffee is good too. We liked the atmosphere and the waitress was very attentive. I went here for Sunday morning breakfast, and had one of the specials of the day, the Irish Skillet. I grew up in Evansville but live in St Louis, so my review is definitely colored by that. Evansville is lacking in many good breakfast spots, and brunch is basically not a thing here. I think that Cleavers stops serving breakfast at 11am, even on a Sunday. The food was good for this market, better than the chain restaurants, but nothing earth shattering. However, they were very busy when I got there at 9am. I don't know if they were short handed, but while they were quick to turnaround tables, there was no organization or list to the line of waiting customers. We had to police ourselves. It seems like that could end very badly. That being said, the place is pretty good for what it is. A step above Denny's, but not quite a hipster brunch haven. read more

Initially I thought this place was a butcher shop. After passing by then I thought it was a steakhouse or possibly a BBQ place. Its actually a sandwich and salad place. We probably got there at about 7:00pm. As I walked in the door, the Pine-Sol odor was just overwhelming! The gyro I ordered was fantastic! This is LARGE! Great tasting tzatziki sauce, and HEAPING pile of gyro meat, The onion (just a slab and not broken up) was a bit overwhelming and would be better served as slivers instead of a whole slice. The gyro meat could also have used a little more crisp texture as well. Overall though the gyro was great though. Prices were very reasonable. Service was also excellent. Quite honestly the Pine-Sol odor continued throughout our meal, and they even began moping the floors while we ate. The odor was extremely strong, and I would venture to say ruined the experience.
