I was fortunate to find Odettes Eatery, among other restaurants and businesses, across the street from our hotel at the City Works Depot. We had an early breakfast on board before disembarking. Still, when I mentioned eating lunch across the street at Odettes Eatery to my sisters and husband, they heartily agreed to the restaurant's Mediterranean and North African menu. It was peak lunch hour, but we managed to walk in, where we were welcomed and seated by a cheery hostess. Within a few minutes, our friendly and happy server, Jacob, came by to introduce himself, suggest thirst-quenching beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), and describe menu items we weren't sure about, given the menu's limited descriptions. It took us a few minutes to decide on our meals while Jacob piqued our interest with his suggestion of their thirst-quenching Honey and Ginger Lemonade, along with glasses of iced water, giving us a little more time to decide. FOOD: -Flatbread Lunch Special (Gurnard with Romesco): two large strips of golden-fried panko-coated cod-like textured topped a wood-fired flatbread slathered with smoky, nutty, and slightly spicy Romesco sauce. The crisp, fried, panko-coated fish was complemented by lightly dressed, fresh, shredded cabbage and herbs. I asked Jacob to identify the type of fish used in this dish, as my family and I thought it might have been cod or monkfish, but Jacob said it was locally caught gurnard fish. My older sister practically single-handedly devoured this lunch special, but I was happy to have tasted a bit of the crisp fried panko-coated fish. NZ$29/NZ$39 incl beverage -Seared Snapper, Greens, Wild Rice, and Soy Green Goddess: The grilled pieces of fish were "buttery" moist, delicately sweet, and their firm white flesh flaked well. The mild-tasting fish was enhanced by a squeeze of freshly grilled lemon and lightly dressed greens. I preferred the grilled preparation to the deep-fried gurnard. NZ$46 -Chips: My husband and eldest sister zeroed in on the chips, AKA thick-cut, deep-fried potatoes, after reading their accompaniments of berbère, honey mustard, and curry leaves. Although I shared my seared snapper with them, I barely got two pieces of the crispy, on the outside and soft, fluffy, interior, deep-fried chips before my husband and eldest sister stuffed themselves. NZ$16 -Chargrilled Chicken Skewers: The three skewers of chargrilled, juicy, and tender chicken had been seasoned with paprika and turmeric. The chicken skewers were accompanied by toum, a Lebanese garlic sauce, and a few guindillas (Basque Spanish pickled chili peppers). My husband and eldest sister shared the chicken skewers and chips as their meals, exclaiming they'd return for more during our additional 3-day post-cruise stay. NZ$45 -Green Salad: This simple family-sized green salad of green leaf lettuce leaves, radicchio, and sliced cucumbers and radishes was lightly dressed with a semi-sweet, floral, and rich-tasting muscat vinegar and olive oil. This green salad was refreshing, healthy-tasting, and very shareable. NZ$16 Everything about Odettes Eatery from its flavors, food presentation, excellent and friendly service, comfortable ambiance, and value, to me, warrants a 5-star rating from me. The drinks menu is great as well, as it has a large selection of wine both by the glass and bottled. There are a lot of things I really like about The Wayward Pigeon. First, since it is not in the CBD, parking is generally easy, plentiful and free. A nice combination of crunchy and a kick of heat that built over the time I ate it. I also had kombucha to drink, though there is a very good assortment of beers and wines available. My husband had the pork scotch, which had a good flavour, but was perhaps a bit over done. Other people in our party had the fried chicken pieces and pizzas. Everyone seemed to agree that their food was pretty good. There is a great place to meet up with a group, large or small. The atmosphere is a sort of retro casual, the colour palette reminds me of the 70's. Call head for reservations - we called on the Friday for Friday night and they were fully booked indoors. Since they don't open until 5, I was already preparing my message to plead for a table. Luckily, I spoke to a real person and got the reservation set for 7. My husband and I actually arrived about 30 minutes early and so as to not be rude, we decided to sit out in the car and read reviews of the restaurant-- both on Yelp and Trip Advisor. Not only to get a better sense of what to order, but perhaps to adjust expectations should any need adjusting. One person (on Yelp and Trip Advisor) left a pretty scathing review of the service as well as the restaurant's response to their review. I went over to TA to see if this was the kind of restaurant I DON'T want to support due to poor customer treatment. (I've been really treated badly at one or two restaurants in my life and will actively boycott any restaurant that I feel has multiple, legitimate complaints against it.) The restaurant's reply was actually quite cheeky (and seemed logical and fair) and I immediately knew I'd enjoy my visit. And thus, I did. Lo and behold, it was the owner (i believe) who waited on our table and gave an incredible overview of wines, beer, the menu, the evolution of his menus, etc. He was charming, knowledgeable, and provided excellent service. We felt welcome and in-tune with what the restaurant was all about and what we were ordering. The food was the best we had during our entire two-week stay all across New Zealand. My favorite was the ostrich and my husband's was the carpaccio with tripe. There wasn't a single misstep from the first plate (we ordered 5 total for dinner) to the two we ordered for dessert. I wish with my whole heart that he would just move to Colorado and open up the restaurant next to our home so we could eat there every day! I highly recommend. 5 plates was the perfect number for my husband and me to split-- we probably should have split dessert as well, but couldn't help ordering one each. We had the tuna, scotch egg, beef carpaccio, duck, and ostrich. The wild mushrooms cooked with the duck were to die for. The polenta with the ostrich was mind blowing. All the components--sauces, veg, flavors were on point. For dessert we ordered the chocolate thingy and the lemon thingy. Both incredible. It was actually quite impressive for dessert to be as good as dinner. Often even the 5-star restaurants don't quite make desserts as well as their entrees. These desserts were just as imaginative, complex, tasty and beautiful as the mains. And everything really was beautiful. Plating is an art form they have absolutely perfected. I'm quite impressed with this restaurant. We drove all the way down from Matarangi to eat there on our last night in NZ and I couldn't have asked for a better send-off !

I would suggest Yelp readers see this review and their response. We have posted over 150 generally positive reviews to trip advisor and were appalled by their response to our negative review. I went back and read Their response to other reviews raising concerns and see a pattern of battering those who object. I am surprised this person can survive in the hospitality business.
