This place is THE coolest! Oh my goodness, I was extremely excited to be taking a stroll in Lakewood and find this place. I've never been to a store like this where I was just intrigued and excited about EVERYTHING in it. Cleveland Curiosities is thoughtfully curated, clean, and well-taken care of. My husband mentioned that he's 'been to so many mediocre shops like this' and it was so refreshing to find one so well done. Visiting Cleveland Curiosities is more like visiting a museum than a store. Most of their goods are for sale, but it's truly a place of wonder and a learning experience. The staff is super knowledgable and more than happy to chat about all of the cool stuff in the store. If I had more money to spend, I definitely would've left with a skull (or five), some posters, books, wall hangings and taxidermied animals. It was super cool to see a giraffe skull as I never realized how big they are or that the 'horns' are actually part of the skull and are dense cartilage/bone. Another favorite was the Naga Skull which was something I knew nothing about but the employees gladly explained to me. This will become a place I visit every time that I'm in Cleveland. I was happy to be referred to Cleveland Curiosities when I moved here from San Francisco last year. My 31 year old tarantula, Tarantella, was nearing the end of her life and I wanted to have her preserved. They assured me they could do it. When she passed in February they quoted us $75 and said it would take a month or two. After three months I started to worry as I hadn't heard a peep from them. I got a hold of Heather who told me that Tarantella had a big tumor in her abdomen so it was a really gross job but they were moving forward and it shouldn't be a problem. I wasn't offered any pictures of progress or the supposed issues. They had continued to move forward without even talking to me about it.  After another two months I started to worry that they had messed her up and weren't being honest. I finally spoke to Hailey who told me there was a little slippage on the body and she was only continuing to attempt to work on it because Tarantella was a pet. Then she sent me a picture and my baby was ruined but I still wanted her back. But I felt like I wasn't getting the whole truth of the matter. Because her abdomen was ruined I texted her back not to put her in a frame and just give her back to me as she is since I would need a plan B for viewing. The next day she wrote me that they'd already put her in a frame. My partner picked her up and was charged $100, which I would have already reversed the charges on if it was my card.  I sent photos and info to several taxidermists and tarantula fanatics all who agreed I had been lied to and the work was subpar. Tarantella smelled like she was rotting through the frame so I broke her out of it and put her back in the freezer. I then sent her to an experienced tarantula taxidermist out of state who said she'd do her best to fix her. She literally cried when she saw her. They hadn't cleaned out her upper body so it was rotting and by the time it made it to her already had a hole. They didn't sew her abdomen shut, they just shoved cotton in it, then glued the cotton right to the matte picture frame board. The taxidermist said even if the tumor caused issues with the abdomen that didn't account for the top half being left to rot and not properly done.  Her abdomen can't be saved as it was already falling to pieces when she first came home. Fortunately some other taxidermists so love and adore my relationship with Tarantella that they have offered up a similar abdomen and what is left of hers will be put inside of that one. This is not how I wanted to honor her at all. I'll always know that isn't her abdomen. I blame myself for not more thoroughly checking into their preservation services. So many people recommended them that I didn't do my due diligence and that is on me. I wasn't even going to write this up but I don't want anyone else to have their beloved pet mutilated by people who may well be starting to train as taxidermist but certainly are not. The lack of communication and documentation on their part is beyond unacceptable. If they would have contacted me upon finding the tumor I would have told them to put her back in the freezer and found a more experienced person to handle her but I wasn't even given the option. Not only do I think we are owed a refund but I think they should pay for her to be fixed. I'm absolutely gutted at how my beloved girl was treated. read more

Cleveland Curiosities is a newly opened shop on Madison Avenue. Its an antique and oddities store that caters to a VERY specific niche market. For collectors who need oddities, or creatives who need super specific oddities for a photoshoot, set decor, etc. - this place is a gold mine. Yes, it has taxidermy, ouija boards, antique medical devices and funeral accessories, amongst many other things. Is this something I need? No. But can I appreciate the quality of items for those looking for these things? Yes. The store is super clean, well-organized, has a clear aesthetic. I can tell the owners take a lot of pride in researching and acquiring interesting one-of-a-kind items. I came across Cleveland Curiosities on Facebook and have been wanting to check it out for a while. I stopped in on a Sunday afternoon and was immediately taken aback by the giant taxidermy lion in the center of the store! So awesome. I've always been interested in oddities and antiques, so this store did not disappoint. It's pretty small, but jam packed with treasures. This is the type of place that you can walk through three times and still see something new each time around. The lady working there (possibly the owner?) was very friendly and chatty. I honestly sort of cringed when I read about it opening because I snobbily thought "great, just what we need, another trying-too-hard oddities shop that overcharges for everything", but I was SO wrong. It's really well-curated and the displays are nicely arranged, and for the rarity and difficulty in finding a lot of these items, I find the prices very reasonable. I met the owners and they are super nice and generous with their knowledge. They really seem passionate about the history, science, and cultural significance of the items in the shop. Obviously this kind of shop isn't for everybody - there's taxidermy, medical antiques, coffins, creepy dolls, and specimens in jars. But if that does sound like your jam, or if it's just something you're morbidly curious about but never had the opportunity to explore, I think the store is a friendly and welcoming place to go investigate. After discovering Cleveland Curiosities on Insta, I have been looking for an excuse to make the 3 hour drive and check them out. After a year, I FINALLY made my way to Cleveland, and this shop DID NOT DISAPPOINT! I had high expectations after seeing all their cool stuff on IG, and really could not wait to get my hands on something awesome to my oddities collection. I am giving 5 stars because this shop not only had outstanding customer service but also because of the crazy variety of items they carried. I'm not kidding, this place has everything! I walked away with a few vintage and modern autopsy/medical tools & a book of autopsy history. The items that I REALLY wanted were out of my price range but deff noteworthy (genuine shrunken head, Victorian caskets, vintage Ouija boards, and real human skulls). Now I know to save for my next visit. As far as customer service went, the husband and wife owners of this shop were extremely gracious and welcoming. We showed up an hour before opening, and were standing outside trying to yelp a nearby diner to grab a coffee while we waited. The owner spotted us on the sidewalk and invited us in to look around while he continued to set up for the day. Even though he was busy, he still took time to answer all of our questions, and even pointed us toward other local places where we could get our oddities fix. I will 1000% be a return customer. I would recommend saving up because they truly have some extremely weird and unique pieces that you won't find anywhere else. I do have one caution/warning: while the items in this shop are totally my type of weird or 'dark sided', my husband was pretty creeped out and felt uncomfortable. I could have stayed for hours talking to the owners and learning about the pieces, but he lasted an hour before he had to step out. One of the coolest shops to visit !! The owners are friendly and helpful. If you want to see a calf with two heads or exotic butterflies in frames this is the place for you. Also they do not kill the animals to put them in their shop. They did not harm any of the creatures in there. Overall the store is very interesting and definitely something special. read more
