Pretty expensive to get two closets done. As the sales rep and I talked about what I wanted, one of the two closets ended up being done opposite of what I wanted. The installer said it will cost me money and another visit for them to change it. Considering I spent a small fortune Ofcourse I declined scheduling it. When I reviewed the designs I signed off on I see the rep had what I want reversed and in error I signed off on it. Very sad. Small fortune and now guests hang their clothes in the side of closet behind the entrance door instead of easy access area as discussed with rep. read more

If you're thinking about hiring Closets by Design, think again! Hire that 'name brand competitor' that the CbD design consultant kept bad mouthing. Or buy some old wood and do it yourself, which would result in a much better end result than CbD will give you. From the high pressure, stereotypical used car salesman tactics to the hours spent going over confusing pen and paper drawings of our space to the disaster of an install, we regret every part of our decision. In an attempt to save money we went with them, as it was cheaper than the other quote we received. Had to wait weeks to get an install. When it finally happened the cabinets and shelves were not installed to the correct measurements and there were not enough shelves for the design we agreed on. They were dirty, left with pricing stickers on the shelves, the "wood" (and I use that wood very loosely) was chipping in places, pieces that should be covered were exposed, the shelves didn't fit and what was supposed to be matching drawers were two different heights. For over $9K spent, we were appalled at the result. But we made the decision to go with them so that was our bad. Then as I was cleaning the shelves, an entire cabinet of shelves came crashing down on my head. If a small pet or child had been under there, it would've have a serious injury. Luckily all I received was a minor concussion. The crash caused the shelves and cabinet structure to break. At that point I realized the extent of the poor quality materials used. Absolutely not worth the price!! I immediately contacted the designer we had worked with. She said she would report it and then we never heard from her again. A day later I heard from the Installation Manager who was shocked and full of big promises about making it right and said he would come to our house to make sure it was fixed. He didn't show up. The installer he sent was very nice and spent all day re-doing it. However, when he left, we realized that the shelves were still wobbly in some sections and that some were not the standard measurements we had ordered, so the additional shelves we needed would have to be custom made and ordered from Closets by Design. The manager said he would get us a deal. After more back and forth with his superiors for a week, he 'brokered' us a deal - which wasn't much of one. In reading the reviews (which I should've done more carefully in the beginning!!), I see that many people have experienced the same complaints we have. Absolutely DO NOT hire this company!! We did end up going with that 'name brand competitor' they bad mouth for the other closet needs in our house and yes, California Closets is worth every penny for their amazing customer service and products. REALLY fabulous experience. Cannot recommend Portland Closets by Design enough! Just moved to Portland from San Francisco. I shopped around for quotes with VERY specific needs for a dressing room remodel. I'm extremely type-A (my bad), already have what I need/want measured out, and this is my second time building out a dressing room in a home - basically I'm a closet design company's worst nightmare. I met with a couple big name vendors who lazily tried to tell me what I wanted wasn't possible, slap together a 3d rendering to propose an out-of-the-box non customizable modular solution, tack on features I explicitly repeated I didn't want, pass me a quote equal to the cost of a newish car, then tried to schedule me 14 weeks out (but wouldn't commit to that timeline when pressured). Then GREG came in and saved the day. VERY chill, no sales bs guy, super relatable and kind. Greg also took his time to sit down with me at my dining room table and draw out my plans BY HAND. - for those new to space planning, this method is OG is FAR SUPERIOR to an online 3D rendering. He showed purpose and thought behind his proposals and worked with me to incorporate my original drawings/measurements to duplicate my asks. His quote was BEYOND reasonable. Worked with me to schedule within 6 weeks and followed up accordingly. Installation coordinators were SUPER communicative, the installers were possibly the nicest guys who have ever worked on my house. They were SO neat and tidy and took every precaution to make sure I was comfortable with them in my home. Best of all, my closets are flawless. Sturdy, no shoddy workmanship, cleanly adhered to the wall etc TLDR you can stop researching who to call- just ask for Greg ;) read more

Had a great experience with this company. From the designer, Shanna Johnson who came in to determine my needs and to measure and assess the area to the installation guy's who did the work. Shanna took the time to really find out what my needs were in regard to the closet installation. I have a large walk in closet that needed organization. The company communicated clearly the install dates and when the start times were. When the men started work they were very careful not to damage any areas of my home while unloading and staging. They were also exceptionally good about cleaning up after themselves. When the job was finished it looked great. All debis was carried away, the area where all the sawing and assembly took place was vacuumed and wiped down. Really pleased with this company. read more

With it all installed I am so pleased with the final outcome. Whitney had suggested the crown and base moulding for a more finished look. I am so glad I took her advice. Avoid if you are employed and your time in valuable. Be prepared for multiple appointments for measurements. My experience was Closets by Design sent inexperienced designer out to do measurements and close sale then office calling back at a later date with need to schedule a second appointment for supervisor to recheck the measurements for accuracy because of new designers. First appointment contract was signed , install date set and 50% deposit paid. read more

They took a 50% deposit from us right before pandemic happened. Without communicating or letting us know or even offering to refund our deposit until they are back up and running they just closed up shop. Their phone goes straight to voicemail. I had to call the California office just to speak with someone. They transferred me to someone who I had to leave a voicemail and they still have not contacted me back. I originally still wanted to have our closets done by them but because of their poor customer service I just want our money back. read more
