Lied! I do not know whether the dishonesty came from the employee or the owner, but the employee directly stated that the owner told her to lie. (I strongly encourage the owner to review the security footage to verify exactly what was said.) They falsely represented the original price of an item. Like most customers, I checked the pricing myself while shopping. It is a private business, and they have EVERY RIGHT to charge whatever prices they choose. What they do not have the right to do is deliberately mislead customers about original pricing. That level of dishonesty is disturbing and completely destroys trust. read more

I think this place is a rip off, I had several really nice high end purses, clothes and shoes, and what I was afford was a joke. A lot of stuff was new with tags. I understand they need to make money but they also could offer better deals for their sellers. I would rather donate than step foot in here again. On a side note, from a shopping perspective. I agree with other reviewers that workers and manager could be more welcoming and friendly to customers and sellers. Before bringing in my clothes to sell, my daughter and I browsed. I did find a wonderful Free People jacket at a decent price. However, the experience could have been better had employees and manager greeted or smiled when in close proximity to my daughter and I. Nevertheless, I presented my little tote of clothes and received text just an hour later that their offer was ready. I was satisfied with the offer but it was def on the low end. I cashed in with a higher amount for store credit. I bought that cute jacket. The next day I came back with two larger totes. I just wish that the clerk had expressed a glimmer of friendliness. The sellers are a primary source of the store's success. I'll see how it goes when I return for their offer. Update to follow. We'll, came back for the payout and the same clerk was friendly this time. However, to name a few, I had beautiful free people blouses, linen blouses and pants, brand new dresses that are definitely in style that they did not accept. My reason for bringing these clothes in is my recent weight loss. I will not bring any of my clothes to this store. It's just not worth my time and energy. Sold my 3 newNike shoes pair that are easily $700 total and they offered me $20 lol And my clothes are all women's size 0, and said they're junior size so they don't take them. Every so often I donate clothing I no longer wear, and occasionally sell small batches of in-demand and designer goods to resale clothing stores. In my experience, dealing with buyers at these kinds of stores can be mercurial at best: I actually once took 4 pairs of Levi's 501 jeans to a resale store on a Tuesday, only to have them rejected as "old fashioned" by the buyer; then brought them back to the same store the following Wednesday, as a different buyer squealed "ah, these are awesome!" and paid out an equitable price. My experience at Clothes Mentor was no less herky-jerky. Last Fall I brought in some pairs of lightly-worn footwear, each pair in its own plastic bag for protection. An older, well-dressed woman met me at the counter and inspected my shoes. I told her I wasn't sure if they were an appropriate style for her boutique, but she assured me they were, and that I should bring them back in Winter when her seasonal display space changed. I returned a few months later, heartened to see shoes in their display window similar to mine. This time, however, I was met at the front desk by a girl with the personality of a wet dish rag who was dressed as if cosplaying "Night Clerk" at a Motel 6. She immediately lead with a stern "we can't take things in plastic bags" like I should somehow know this, and proceeded to tell me I needed to put my items in a laundry basket (who among us doesn't have a laundry basket in their car, right?) or "a reusable bag." I informed her no one mentioned this when I was there previously. I had some canvas bags in my car, so I transferred the footwear, was given a receipt, and the distinct feeling this entire episode would devolve into a Sisyphean journey. Sure enough, I was summoned by text an hour later, and the same clerk informed me my shoes were "out of date" and referenced a minor flaw on the INSIDE of one shoe that somehow rendered it unsalable in a USED CLOTHING STORE. Sisyphus, indeed. My advice for sellers: donate and take the tax deduction. At a minimum, you'll make some lucky souls very happy to take home your pre-owned goods. read more

They never give me enough for my items and when they do pay out, it's usually very small. Most of the time they're not taking any new items.

I was quite disappointed with my experience. I reviewed the website, arrived with my clothes and was told the clothes needed to be in containers. I went next door and purchased two laundry baskets and went back. She then informed me she was only taking winter clothes. I sorted out the winter clothes and she said I can't look at them until later, come back tomorrow and pick up what we don't want. I said I couldn't come back tomorrow, she ripped the paperwork off the baskets and said bring them back when you can. I did that, drove from PSP dropped them off, got the text they were ready went back down only to learn they would take three items only for $10 . That was three round trips from PSP. I took 2 baskets of clothing plus one brand new moving box in back in February. The young cashier told me they couldn't take a "box that was falling apart" (it wasn't) they told me they would text me within a couple hours..... well, it's been a month and I never heard from them again. I took in Bob Mackey, Chicos, Calvin Klein. I'm personally a clothing dealer and tend to know what these buy, sell trade places are looking for. I visited Palm Desert on a Sunday, walked into this shop, and was not welcomed or greeted. The 20 something year old working there was sitting down hunched over on her phone the entire time I was in there. I heard sound coming out of her phone so was led to think she was on it for entertainment. 30 minutes went by, my disappointment continued to rise. My excitement for shopping here completely deflated. The dressing rooms are locked and we are asked to ring a doorbell-like bell to be let in. Well, I did, and she didn't hear it over her phone. When I called out, "excuse me," she walked over pointed out the doorbell and said "this is what you do." I told her I did, and that she was too busy on her phone to hear," She unlocked the door and walked away. No apology, just an annoyed-looking body language as she walked back to sitting down with her phone. I'm sorry to whoever the manager is; I'm guessing you're not aware of what your employees do to pass time while being paid. I will not be shopping here again. read more

I wanted to sell some true religion jeans that have tags on them and I brought them in on Saturday they told me I needed to speak with the owner. I called on Monday and now they don't know when the owner's going to be there and the she has no schedule . I highly recommend going somewhere else. Very unorganized. read more

This was a very large store recommended to me by two little old ladies I met in another consignment store. It was well organized by color and size, like any other Clothes Mentor you might find. The brands were the same moderate ones you might expect: J Jill, Loft, but I was excited to find a designer selection too. More and more, I'm learning the importance of reading all reviews -- good and bad -- before patronizing a business. Instead of donating gently worn and new quality clothing or dealing with some of the red tape with consignment shops, I decided to give this place a try. Unfortunately, my experience was similar to a lot of these 1 star reviews -- even though the staff were a little slow with managing this process, they were overall courteous. For a 4-hour drive (roundtrip) and a 2.5 hour wait, the amount of money I received for the amount and quality of clothing I sold wasn't equitable at all. The process of how this works is extremely flawed and the way this business is promoted with regards to them buying your items is very misleading. The concept that a customer's time is just as valuable as staff was clearly lost -- thank goodness it was a nice fall day and there were plenty stores I could go check out while I wait for them to review my items. Unfortunately, I never received a text message to let me know they were ready. They took 80% percent of what I brought and I got less than $100 for it. Mind you, what I brought was close to $3K. While I wasn't expecting a windfall, I wasn't expecting less than $100 either. The items they didn't want was confusing for me because some of those items were similar to what they did want -- just either a different color or pattern. So again, a flawed process with no real rhyme or reason or criteria for what they are or aren't looking for. Not surprising that they offered more for store credit (over $100) than what I got in cash. As classist as this may sound, I would have been better off dealing with some red tape at a reputable, upscale consignment shop closer to where I live. read more

Nice selection but the staff was incredibly rude and judgmental. They did not honor signs for percentage off (50% of jewelry and a rack of 50% off clothing). They made comments about how we shouldn't worry about the percentage off because they already had low prices. Without going into much more detail, we were very insulted and treated like we should be grateful. All of my purchases were full price with the exception of one item which was 50% off and they would not honor it. The jewelry (of which I wanted to purchase two pieces) had a 50% off sign but they would not honor the discount even though the sign was right over the jewelry. The one women said we were frugal and people that come in there do not worry about discounts. I don't write negative reviews but we were so insulted -- even two days later -- I had to post a review. read more

The store had an excellent store manger, Destiny, she's clearly not there anymore and you can tell by the vibe and lack of customers. Everything needs to improve. Yesterday at 11am I brought in a basketful of slacks (most purchase within the last 2 yrs). I explained that I came all the way from Palm Springs and I would go to the mall and purchase a coffee and read my book while they went through my items. Theresa said I have no idea when I'll get to it. I told her I didn't want to drive home and would bide my time rather than drive the 20 miles back. She again said I have no idea when we will get to it. Then she said you don't have to leave them here if you don't like the answer. I said no I would leave them. I was in the mall 3 1/2 hours waiting to hear from them. No text. Went home. The next day I called at 3:00 pm asking if they had gotten to them yet. She said yes we texted you. That was a lie. They did not. I went back to the store and she said she texted me again. She did not. No calls came in from the Clothes Mentor. I took all my things back, even the ones they wanted and would never step foot in that store again. They are so RUDE. Nobody needs to be treated like I was. read more

This is the only second-hand store that takes lightly used items. Take a non-plastic bag or bin when trading. I'd recommend dropping the stuff off and doing errands in the area while it's being traded. read more

I brought in a pair of juicy couture leather shoes ( like new) worn once in the box. And because they were almost 4 inches she denied them. The girl said "we're not taking 4 inch heels today". They had a shelf of them on the rack and I asked about them and she couldn't give me an answer. Then she inspected a BEBE top that had been dry cleaned and she denied that top as well. But the SAD thing was she told me she had "never heard about juicy couture". I feel someone that works in a clothing store and makes decisions should know more brands especially, bringing in items to be sold for profit. The 5 star reviews for this business are from shoppers, the 1 star reviews are from people who have brought in gently used or new clothes for resale. This was my experience: they "bought" 5 of my high quality items and paid less than $12 total for them. While I did not expect them to take everything I brought in I was shocked at how little they paid for beautiful jackets some with tags. The employee who handled the payment transaction told me that they did not recognize the brands of the other items which they rejected, which are well known designers. I do not recommend Clothes Mentor for reselling your clothing, there is very little reward. You are simply giving away your items to finance & stock their store. Investigate other resale or consignment shops first. Or donate to charity and get a much better tax write off. read more

I keep trying to give this place a second chance, but it seems they just keep getting worse. At one time, they seemed to understand the value of clothing. Not any more. I took in a box of designer label clothes all in excellent condition, and the one thing they chose to buy was a flannel shirt. I then got the head tilt, and was told that most of my clothes were older and they are looking for younger styles. Do they not know the demographic of Palm Desert ??
