I'm torn. Would love to give this place 3 stars except for the extremely rude bartender (most likely the owner). My husband and I were greeted by a super friendly hostess and were seated at the bar since we did not have reservations. We were then left alone for ten minutes or so until my husband asked the bartender if we order with him or thru the QR code. Without even a glance, he walked away without a single word. It was blatantly clear that he was not busy, but appearing to keep his hands busy so that he would not have to acknowledge us (who were the only ones sitting at the side of the bar at the time). After watching him ignore us, he cheerfully chatted with a female customer on the other side. Thankfully, a very friendly bartender took our order and answered our questions about local recs since we were from out of town. Ambience was cool, chic, I guess. The cocktail menu seemed unique. Tasty. 2/3 of the staff were friendly at least. Would recommend if you like cocktails, but probably avoid the mustache-d man unless you're lucky and he speaks to you first. read more

We ordered the christmapolitan which was great and the yippi ki yay which came in a cute mug. The mac and cheese was super basic and overpriced. This is a solid cocktail place in Gastown. I've been here a couple of times and most recently came here on a Saturday night, and there was unexpectedly a table for 4 available. So no wait for my friends and me! The place has a great vibe and ambiance. Dim lighting, chill music (although sometimes a bit too loud) and great people watching. I've always had good service but from the other reviews, it looks like it can be a hit or a miss. As for cocktails - the clough daiquiri an easy go-to for me, but there are a lot of other options. My friends liked the Apiary and the Kermit. The only one I didn't like is Band on the Rum but that's probably bc I am not partial to IPA. Definitely worth dropping by for a cocktail, or two, or three. read more

This is a small lounge so if you visit on a Friday/Saturday come early or expect to stand in line. We arrived around 9:30 and had to wait 20mins. The good news is, people probably don't spend too long here because of the price of the cocktails. Live music on Fri/Saturday nights. Food... small menu. Kinda weird. Hot dogs ect. Came here for a drink. Parking is pretty awful here, so hopefully you can find a free spot somewhere. The interior is dim. Really dim. Too dim, to be honest. I could barely read the menu. If you are the owner, please turn up the lights a bit. As I really didn't know what to try, I ordered the Apiary ($12). Maker's Mark with honey, some lemon and lime, egg white, bitters, and a chunk of real(!) beehive. Yes, you get to chew up some poor bee's house. It's so great to be human. You can either swallow the pieces, or roll it up into a cool wax ball. I chose the latter. Anyways, the drink actually is pretty neat. Lemon and honey are always a winning combo, and as I slowly sipped the cocktail, I could pick up a bit of herbal notes from the bitters. You really have to let this stuff roll around your tongue, and also pay attention to your sense of smell, to really appreciate this drink. To be honest, like many reviewers, I too thought that cocktails were "overpriced drinks for douches". What's so special about mixing some hard stuff together then cranking the price? After talking to the bartender here, wow, each one of these drinks has a story - you just have to take the time to find out. Not sure about other venues, but wow, this guy is knowledgeable. The owner essentially chased me into the street and kicked a beer can out of my hand aggressively last night (May 7th) Joey (the owner) last night, it was late past 2am. I drank too much and there was a little beer left in one of the cans I bought at Clough and was warned not to take it outside but drunkenly I did. And the owner Joey ran into the street and kicked the beer can out of my hand aggressively. I get how I was wrong, I drank too much, ignored instructions and took a beer can outside. I get it I shouldn't have done that, that was stupid. I had a bit left and wanted it for the walk home, I've been living abroad where this is very normal on a Friday. But his reaction was unacceptable. I wasn't being belligerent before or after, in fact after the incident I profusely apologized to everyone and told his friends to apologize to him on my behalf. It wasn't until this morning when I sobered up when I realized that was disgusting behavior for an owner of a bar. I dropped $100 there last night. He is supposed to be in the hospitality industry, I was a customer and was friendly to him when I met him earlier. I won't be going back and I will telling everyone I know what happened. I hope the owner replies to my comment and tells his side of the story and justifies why under ANY circumstances it's alright to chase a patron out of your bar and kick a beer bottle out of his hand and say rude things. You weren't going to lose you liquor license, this happens all the time, the police don't care, you just say some drunk guy ignored instructions. Police aren't this strict about it. Now that I've been trained in the ways of the alchemist, I can appreciate the simple pleasure a place like Clough Club can bring. With three full pages of craft cocktails to choose from, the menu is a direct signifier of what they're attempting to accomplish with this space. Love everything about this place. The dark atmosphere creates a mysterious vibe, the 110 year old space retained as much as possible. The back room which has an optical illusion that could trick some if too inebriated. The cocktail list and spirits selection is unique, complementing the tone of the space perfectly. But definitely get the Apiary: Bourbon, honey syrup, fresh lemon juice, fresh lime juice, egg white, Fee Brother's walnut bitters, topped with a honeycomb on top. Yes, a honeycomb. It's amazing. Even the entrance to this place could easily be missed. But maybe that's a good thing, I wouldn't want people to be filling the space up as I will need my Apiary fix now and then. read more

My friends and I stopped in here to grab a quick drink which we were walking around Downtown Vancouver. The Clough Club has a decent selection of whiskeys, scotches, cocktails, and other libations. They also have a full food menu, so you can come here to eat and drink. Cocktails will run you from $12-16 CAD, but they are prepared from fresh ingredients and with some loving care. The mood here is spooky and intimate - dark wood, brassy details, candles. The room in the back has its own separate bar and feels like a really cool Halloween party. In a good way. We spent two nights here out of 4 in Vancouver, if that tells you anything. The Apiary is a fantastic concoction, although it is on the sweet side. They smoke the inside of the glass by burning a piece of wood from a bourbon barrel. Seriously. They're THAT into their cocktails. So delicious. They have a number of creative spins on old classics, and their version of an old fashioned was equally as delicious. It's the perfect spot for a date or for a few casual drinks with some close friends. The atmosphere here doesn't breed levity, it sort of cultivates a more serious mood. Had such a nice time at the Clough Club last week. Went on a Friday so it was a bit crowded but there's a center bar type area that my friend and I stood at. Didn't take too long for a seat at the actual bar. Cozy atmosphere too. Had "it's not you it's me" which is basically like a mojito but it was amazing. Really enjoyed but my friend didn't love her daiquiri. She found it a little strong but the kind bartender switched it out for a cider (obviously different spectrum but she was thrilled). They also have a bar area with a couple bar stools. Cool atmosphere and vibe inside. Fortunately it was just me and a friend, and two other women during the time, so luckily this place wasn't fully packed to the rim, as I expected, but now I understand why it wasn't crowded after my terrible experience here. Now, let's chat about the crappy service, shall we? First off, what's up with the bartender, though?! He was totally a douche and the most that I got out of him was barely a hello upon walking in. He seems to cater to his "own kind" (if you know what I mean). I must have come at a bad time because after being seated and ordering a drink and some food that was the only attention I received from him.I ordered a daiquiri as well as the "feature cocktail" of the night, since we were cutting it close for happy hour I decided to double up on the drinks. After I was approached with my future cocktail the bartender had about 12 of his friends coming to the bar and that's when service went completely down! They played blindfolded cocktail drinks, while the bartender sat at the bar area recording the events on his phone, totally forgot about me and my friends food order. After about 20 minutes of seeing the bartender having a great time and walking in and out smoking cigarettes, I decided to let him know that we were ready to close out-it wasn't as if he was paying attention to us anyways. My friend and I had yet to receive our food and I didn't even receive my second cocktail drink that I ordered! I walked up to the bartender and let him know I wanted to close out. He nodded at me but continued to video the excitement at the bar. After videotaping the excitement, he goes outside to take to smoke breaks. Really dude! Where is my food? He walks back in and goes directly in the kitchen to get our hot dogs and dropping it on her table. Dude, you didn't and never even washed your hands! Was up with that? After 30 mins of waiting, we finally received our hotdogs-which were TOTALLY not worth the long ass wait. I was better eating a Japadog! The bartender literally places our hot dog plates and chips on the table with no napkins! Dude, was up with your server manners?? So rude! My friend even had to get up and ask for napkins. Shortly after-we receive our bill. So, remember that second drink that I ordered? It never came out! So when the bartender dropped the bill off, I had asked if the Daiquiri was on the bill. His response, "I don't know, check for yourself, is it on there". And walks away!! Umm excuse me?? My friend and I were so disappointed! I believe I was more hurt than even disappointed. To have to give my money to a business establishment that is so unprofessional. Someone really needs to come and do a "Undercover Boss" on this place! I'm telling you, my bartender never washed his hands after coming in and out from outside (smoking a cigarette) as well as being on his phone the entire night!! Four of us came here after the place we were supposed to meet had a one hour wait. How fortuitous! As a retired bartender my quick glance at the bar raised my expectations - it was stocked and designed for someone to mix drinks in, not just pull draft or mix a high-ball. I was not disappointed. I ordered a Sidecar. Just a basic, delicious cocktail (when done right) but an order that has been known to illicit confusion or bewilderment in many other drinking establishments. Not here. My drink was delicious. My partner's Old Fashioned had nice big ice cubes and a generous orange peel finishing it off beautifully. It was a delight to find a skilled and proficient barkeep. Food was basic but very tasty and reasonable. I regret I do not get to downtown Vancouver all that often anymore. I look forward to returning here when I do. read more

This place looked really promising. The decor was cute and the music the DJ was playing was perfect. We sat down and a server came by within a few minutes to take our drink order. I ordered my usual dirty martini and my friend ordered whiskey. After that it was all downhill. It had a weird after taste and it came with no olives! That is my favorite part of dirty martinis... vodka soaked olives! One of their employees came by to clean up the table next to us and didn't think about trying to aim the spray bottle away from me. The Clough Club's got great character which shows in how they retained the 110 year old building's heritage features. I love that! There's lots of seating: a front bar area, a table in the back hallway, stools behind the front bar, then down the hallway, yet another bar in the back! I didn't eat anything there, though took a quick peek at the menu and see that it's all reasonably priced (cheap even, for Gastown standards). The real stellar point is the cocktails which are all dark-spirits based. The Apiary is delicious: Bourbon, honey syrup, fresh lemon juice, fresh lime juice, egg white + Fee brother's walnut bitters. Well, if you can get past the loud music, this place is great. The music was pretty good, and surprisingly, so was the food. The menu seemed to offer quite the variety, and the amount of fresh fish was impressive, but I was a bit cautious about ordering any of that here. I ordered a hearty short rib and sweet potato mashed dinner, and for 11 pm at night, I was pretty impressed. It was definitely enough for two at that hour. We had a nice corner table that gave us a great view of all of the people outside. As others have noted, the drinks were made well, but I stuck with my glass of white. At $8 a glass, it wasn't bad at all. The service was impressive too, considering we had to yell out our orders. I must sound like 100 years old, complaining about the music. I always knew the day would come when that would bother me. I'll preface this by saying two things. 1. I am not a fan of the pricey cocktail. It's not so much the spending of money as much as it is the fact that every new venue in every converted sliver of a dimly lit warehouse space in town is doing the same thing, and there are no shortage of them in Gastown. Nowadays when I think 'cocktail', I think 'wasted $14', and it's as simple as that. 2. I am not a fan of chain bars and restaurants. Sooo... How the hell did I end up giving Clough Club a (rare for me) Yelp-sized fistful of stars? Well, I've tried the other trendy cocktail bars. I've been to all of the Donnelly Pubs at some point. Clough Club does not fall into any of the stereotypes that I usually am keen to proliferatedly mock and litter Twitter with. They have turned me into a fan of the art of cocktail, and a believer that not all trends are bandwagonesque. But this place is no teenage fanclub. (See what I did there?). It's a truly grown-up cocktail experience and the dim unassuming exterior may even thwart off the stray pre-grad pre-clubber. And more reasons that I can discuss with you over a Shallow Water. The bartenders have class. The drinks have class. There's even a tribute to the late, great friend, Derek V. They treat you like a celebrity, and really know their drinks. If you're not sure, just ask any question, and be prepared to learn something interesting about ingredients, history, who's who, and what have you. In short, these aren't cocktails. They're specifically crafted liquid potions. Each drink has a story. Each sip summoning up a daydream, transporting me to a random episode of Tales of the Gold Monkey. I stumbled upon this little gastown gem this week, and had to write a review!! Hands down, this is the coolest place in gastown.. I'd even stretch it, and say it's the coolest place in vancouver. The decor is very hipster meets haunted house, and it's definately worth a visit. The head bartender Samuel really knows his stuff. This place is definately more of a bourbon/old school type drinking hole, so be prepared to have a lesson in how a proper cocktail is made. I can't remember exactly what drink I had, but I know it had walnut bitters in it, and a chunk of honeycomb. It was as beautiful to look at as it was to drink. The only reason I"m not giving it 5 stars is for a very minor reason, but still a reason. The food portions are extremely small. We ordered the beef empanadas, and they were very tasty, but there were only 4 tiny little pieces. (barely an appetizer for one person) But seeing as this place is brand new, I'm sure they will iron out any minor kinks in the next couple months. First (and last) time here! I definitely loved the decor and atmosphere. For some reason, this dazzled me. I had high hopes. But the rest of my impressions were the exact opposite. 1 - Very slow service for a tiny venue. There were roughly 25 patrons and 3 guys behind the bar. Cocktails took forever. And it took nearly 10 minutes to have a credit card returned. 2 - Water glasses were still noticeably filthy and scary, despite the ultra dim lighting. 3 - Ordering the same drink twice does not mean you will receive the exact same drink. 4 - Asking them to create something "new and exciting" is not their forte. Wound up with a drink already on the menu with the added bonus of a pineapple wedge. 5 - If you like your drinks super sweet, do not bother coming here. Located in the heart of Gastown and the hip epicenter of Vancouver, Clough Club is a small, dimly lit cavern specializing in whisky cocktails. The wood features and dark venue provide a spooky, yet intimate atmosphere. My partner and I visited on a Wednesday night so it was relatively quiet. There was live music that evening and the performer was spectacular! Gave me chills and goosebumps with her deep and soulful voice. The bartender on shift was also very cute. However, his good looks couldn't salvage the mediocre drinks that we encountered. My boyfriend did not enjoy his whisky cocktail. He thought it might as well have been straight whisky because it was very boring. I know nothing about whisky but seeing that Clough Club focuses on this spirit, I'm skeptical about their other drinks. Since I can't stand the taste of whisky, I ordered a Mai Tai. Why would I order a fruity drink at a whisky bar? Because I'm a trooper and didn't want to be a party pooper, forcing my boyfriend to drink alone. This Mai Tai was no bueno. It was bitter and difficult to drink. I couldn't taste the rum or the fruity juices, so not sure what I was drinking. Although I wasn't expecting a tropical Mai Tai since I was at a whisky bar. To give the bartender credit, he did say he would try his best to make me something sweet and fruity. Based on the drinks alone, I'd rate Clough Club 2.5 stars but rounding up because of the cool atmosphere and setting (and that performer). read more

Even if the Clough Club served bad drinks the cozy seating, perfect lighting (unless you are getting old like me and need glasses and a cellphone light) and chill ambience would more than make up for it. But do not fear, the service on this visit ROCKED. I forgot the young mans name but he was a master cocktail shaker. Developed 6 individual tasty beverages with just the right amount of humour. Definitely worth visiting during the happy hour as the $7 cocktails are fantastic. As we visited 4 establishments that evening, the service in this one was the best by far. The only down side was that they could not accept my Donnelly Group gift card. It seems he did not know how to process it and they were scheduled for training on Tuesday to learn. Avoid! Bad service. A friend and I were there very early in the evening on a Friday. There were only about 7 other people in the whole place and yet it took almost ten minutes for someone to even come up to the table. Finally we got some service, picked a bottle of wine. Server comes back and tells us they're out of the wine and offers a different one. We say: whatever. We order a share plate. We wait almost an hour (again, confused what's going on because the restaurant is NOT busy) and finally I ask. The server informs us that he forgot about the order and asks if we still want it. *Yes we still want it we are extremely hungry now because we just drank the entire bottle of wine waiting for our food to come.* We express this and they tell us the dish will be on the house. You shouldn't have to be stern with places for them to acknowledge their mistake and respond accordingly. We order a different dish later on and it's missing two of the key ingreds that were stated on the menu. Talk about getting the run around... OH and as we were prepping to leave a musician started playing the worst acoustic covers of top 40 hits. Too loud and just NO. read more
