This is a hidden gem of a bar located near Gastown. We went around 9pm and we didn't need to wait, but it got busy quickly as the night progressed. We got seated at the bar where we got to see all the action. We got various drinks where the bartender made an impressive show while making the drink, and the flavor profiles are fairly unique. I first visited Arcana in January. I loved all the food and drinks I tried so I knew I had to come back. Since January they changed chefs and have a new food menu now. We ordered the steak and requested it medium rare and it came out closer to medium well. The steak also came with some potato latkas which were just oily sponges with little to no flavor. I think its cute that the food comes out on a oujia board but I wish something like a steak came out on an entree sized plate. The tiny dishes that the food comes in makes it so that theres no room to even use a knife. On top of that they also changed the free tarot card designs. The new tarot designs are very obviously ai generated. The new designs remove so much meaning and interpretation from the original designs they had. In addition to that they used to include free coasters here to take home which they got rid of. The drinks were still really good so I think this place is worth a visit at least just for the cocktails. All the workers here were very kind in answering our questions about the drinks and the service was great. I love a themed bar/restaurant/whatever that commits fully to the bit, and boy does Arcana commit. The decor, the music, the extremely dim lighting; it's all perfectly on theme. We grabbed a couple of seats at the bar directly under the gigantic ouija board (great), and ordered some admittedly pricey drinks. They were great! I had the Devil, which was right up my alley. I looove a spicy drink, and this one was particularly smooth. Plus, it came with a glowing red light, a pentagram sprayed on top, and in a smoke-filled cloche. What can I say, I'm a gal who loves a bit of drama. My husband had one of the special drinks (the Virgo) and said it was also spectacular. Went here on a Tuesday night with a group of 6 and I'm very glad that I got a reservation because the place was packed for a Tuesday night! I'm not surprised though because it was such a fun experience. It's essentially a "speakeasy" which is a pet psychic on the outside. They had so many drink options, each one was super unique. Some of their drinks also came with a tarot card which was a pretty cool touch! One of their special drinks was called "wheel of fortune" which is essentially the wheel chooses your drink for you - the first time you spin it tells your spirit and the second your chaser and the rest is in the hands of the bartnders. My sister took that option was very impressed with the drink! My favourite drink was there Cthulhu cocktail. For food we got their truffle frites which were truffle fries - they were soooo good we ordered it a second time. Their lunar citrus prawns was not that good though, the prawns did not soak in the flavours that much. The last thing that I loved was "Zoltar" their psychic machine that predicted your future lol. Arcana Spirit Lounge is one of the most interesting bars I have been to in Vancouver. It is tucked away behind a storefront that looks like a pet psychic, which makes the entrance fun and unassuming. Inside, the atmosphere is spooky and gothic with really striking decor that fits the theme perfectly. I had the warm olives along with The Temperance and The Judgement. Both cocktails were incredible and really well made. The menu is on the pricier side, but the experience and ambience feel worth it. It was pretty crowded when I went, probably because it was close to Halloween, but the service was still good and the staff were attentive. Loved the theme of the restaurant, super fun if you're looking to get drinks in Gastown! However size of the sliders was ridiculously tiny, I was expecting like Cactus sized sliders but these were like two-bite wonders LOL The flavour of the lamb slider was reeeallly good though. Arcana is such a witchy time. We tried going the Saturday before Halloween, and big mistake, the wait was over two hours. So we made a reservation in advance for a upcoming Saturday night and were able to see what the fuss is about. If you like a themed venue - this is the place for you. It's dark. Like literally, you need to strategically use your table lamp to see your menu dark. It definitely adds to the spooky vibes. Lucky for us, they were still offering their Halloween menu. We ordered the Slimer and Casper from the ghost menu. I've got to say - these are well crafted delicious drinks. Yes, Arcana can feel pricey, BUT they're probably the best cocktails I've had in Vancouver. You can tell the time it took to craft each one, and they're all very unique. We saw other tables ordering drinks too, some come in themed glasses with smoke and the like. Service was wonderful! Jade looked after us and was super pleasant. Don't be deceived by the pet psychic sign because beneath it lies this witchy speakeasy. Vancouver's only zoltar machine is also coincidently placed inside. There's an ouija board engraved on every table and a giant one atop the bar spelling out drink names! I really loved the drinks, they each came with a fiery entertainment element which made it feel like we were table side dining. You also get little keepsakes such as tarot cards with certain drinks. The mini sandwiches and sliders were great as well. I love that the menu items come with a creative kick to all fit the theme. The pear panna cotta, though, not as festive, absolutely blew me away. The general ambiance is fine. But where my table of 6 was sat the last time I visited was less than desirable. I booked a reservation because I wanted the decor and fun drinks that I saw in other reviews, but we only got the drinks. The drinks were fine, nothing to write home about exactly, the flavor was meh it's definitely presentation and gimmick reliant. The part that makes me hesitate to ever want to go back was that table. It was crammed in this strange boxed in corner by the entrance, where the curtains were pulled around us and we were left with 2-3 walls of pure curtain and then a wall with two paintings. The seats and tables were so close together that you constantly had to get up and move when people wanted to use the restroom, and there was barely room for our drinks and food. We also were ignored for long periods of time (10-30 minutes, not ridiculous but still annoying when trying to flag down a server for more drinks/the check.) No part of my experience here was particularly enjoyable outside of the okay drinks. If you can't accommodate a group as large as six without having to shove us in a box and ignore us, don't advertise for reservations for "groups as large as 12" on your website. Interesting secret hidden occult themed "spirit" bar on Abbott in Gastown. This place is disguised as a pet psychic place. I must say I was secretly hoping they had some fortune telling cat inside. Parking is in front (metered spots). The inside is pretty dark, and has plenty of occult type decorations. The tables look like ouija boards, and the inside almost feels like an old mansion. Staff are friendly. Drinks here are good, but crazy overpriced. My buddy ordered a cocktail and it was served with a large glowing ice cube, which was actually pretty and cool I must say. Looks like they freeze these LED lights inside ice, then activate them via remote control when serving them. The staff also hand out a corresponding tarot card matching the name of each cocktail. I'm guessing the idea is to eventually collect a full set of cards, at great expense. They do have a food menu here too, though I didn't try. They also hand out custom fortune cookies. My fortune made no sense. It asked me if I would like to taste some butter or a dress. Hmm. The attention to detail was absolutely incredible. Make sure to reserve a spot before you plan on going! We need more places like these! The staff was lovely and extremely knowledgable. And to be honest, however they want to be a speakeasy or like how they want to be ominous about their location, they purposely use bright lights, and tons things to just grab a person's attention when just walking by the bar. I felt that their vibe was a bit off and a little gimmicky when I was here with my friends. Their drinks were creatively made, and on top of that, their food menu is just barely there. If they were organized and run by the Storm Crow crew, I wish they had the chickpea fries again. I WOULD LITERALLY ORDER THOSE REGARDLESS OF ANYTHING, I MISS THOSE SO MUCH!! Anyways, they have a "Food License" so everything is done by 12:00am and I was kinda sad that happens. I wished they were a proper "bar" but I understand, they are trying new things and they are slowly working back into the restaurant industry. I would say their drinks are good, and the cocktails looks amazing. Some were a bit over the top, but I know for sure the best one of the night is their most simplest and their underrated was "The Fool". Which is legit a Mojito with coconut water. In my experience, themed bars have always had amazing cocktails, but the food is a disappointing afterthought. Arcana was a pleasant exception. We were pleasantly surprised when our beautiful and artfully curated cocktails were followed up with an absolutely KILLER dinner. I ordered the Croque Sorciere, sans the procuitto, and it was served with a bowl of what I can only describe as the cheesiest, fondue-iest yum I've ever had since Burgoo actually had good fondue (circa 2010). Husband had the Beezleburger, which was topped with a flash paper party hat and set ablaze at our table. Cocktails ordered were the Empress (complete with dry ice theatrics, and delicious), the Emperor, and the Cthulhu... all of them fantastic, and enough to make me stumble and slur my way out the door. Chocolate terrine was also to die for. Yasmin was our server, and she was lovely and made sure all our questions and requirements were taken care of. The drink is better than the reading... Tbh. $22 for a fancy cocktail. Definitely come here for the ambiance and fancy cocktails. Don't come if you have lomit time as the service was very slow. They also have a very limited bar, we were unable to order any of the shots we wanted. Food wise their chili chicken drumsticks are an absolute must!! I also tried their prawn dish, which is served cold. I'm not sure if the menu mentioned that, but it surprised me at the time. It was just okay. The charcuterie (magic board) was small for $30 and a tad boring. If you're a Charcuterie girl like myself, save it for Espana or Bartholomew. It was a rainy night and two days from the beginning of a new solar cycle in the early 20s of Abbott Street when I received an invite to the Arcane Lounge. Brought before the entrance, it had the front of a Psychic Store, not unlike many other curious storefronts that dot Gastown in its blend of opulence with penury. Realizing the nature of the establishment, I enter to realize the true face, a dimly lit speakeasy not unlike the speakeasies our grandparents visited for cocktails and intimate conversation. It reminded me of the Revel Room, a live jazz lounge with southern homestyle cuisine, its owner gave the deed to a former tavern owner of the Stormcrow which like the Revel Room which both are now tales of the past, spread by its patrons of better times in Vancouver. Ushered upstairs by my companions, we sat upstairs looking upon the patrons and bartender below, the lounge was narrow but it gave a sense of intimacy with the recommendation for a comfortable coven being about five to six patrons, the furnishings being an ouja board repurposed as a dining table with candles of both skull and wax supporting the lamps. But the lounge calls for drinks and the cocktail menu was proven to be experimental, taking classic cocktails and providing flavors that speak of adventures of far off lands. A mojito with coconut water, a Negroni with a twist and perhaps a callback to the Stormcrow, a cocktail that pits fate with the drink owner. I spun the wheel and had a rum with tropical flavors while my friend had gin with bitter flavors and my other friend ordered the Death Cocktail. To accompany our drinks for the ritual I ordered a rare steak with chimmichuri as parsley is often one of the most common herbs of a witch's spice rack and with it Cajun Chips with Truffle Aioli The steak itself arrived rare as expected, the portions itself were adequate, I was able make conversation with my friends while pacing myself through the meal and the cocktail itself was sweet with tropical fruit but not overwhelmingly strong alcohol. My friend winced at his Bitter Gin and note the Tower wasn't as sweet as expected. The drinks came with tarot cards, perhaps an invitation to try their diverse array of cocktails which I can find intimidating as they can costly but also a commitment to patronize the lounge. At the end of the ritual, I have spent about three of the queen's bills for the evening. As I leave the lounge and back to the rainy streets, I feel a strong desire to return to the lounge with friends for special rituals but cannot find the appeal of going alone. It appeals to a new audience that shares few qualities as the Stormcrow but the Speakeasy is a reminder of the storied past of our lives with its drinks and food. read more
