Man, I find myself coming back here because as in my previous review I find the sauces and the chicken to be pretty legit here and has been for all the years I've been coming. It's a guilty pleasure. Sadly it's crummy here plain and simple. The prices steadily go up and it's not even subtle anymore, the menus posted in the store have the prices written in marker so when they're ready to up the prices, they just erase the marker and change it to what they want. Combos aren't even worth it anymore. My usual is the 10 wings/tenders, 1 side and a drink. It used to be about $13-$14 now it's $15.99! It gets worse, they used to give me a huge 24oz. fountain drink but my latest visit the guy told me I could only get a 8oz. can. You kidding me? The last thing that pissed me off about my latest visit is I wanted to get half of my order in one sauce and the other half with a different sauce - I've done this before, when I later looked at my receipt there a was $0.13 charge. Why?? I know it's not that serious, but warn me please. I've never seen that before. The workers here have usually been ok, but the workers here in my last visit were unusually "dead" and lacked any kind of emotion. "Hello", "What can I get for you", "Can I help you?" Are usually good openers, not a blank stare at me, waiting for me to begin my order. Cluck-U has really fallen. It would be a good place to order from. the flavor is good but it could be cleaner. The cooks aprons are dirty and doesn't look like they change them daily. So, I go to this spot once in awhile for a burger and fries. I went today and ordered one cheeseburger (with whatever else they originally offer) and sautéed onions. How hard can that be, right? Wrong. Lol ..... I got all the way home, showered and got comfortable before deciding to dig in. The onions I requested were raw so I then called them to let them know. The person that I spoke to seemed to be the exact person that took my order. I could be wrong about that but if it was a different person, why not have someone experienced shadow him? He said that the order taker was only on his second day. If he didn't under stand the word sautéd, why not ask his fellow co-workers or me? Three times I've ordered from them in the last year, which proves how badly I wanted to believe it would get better. But alas, abandon all hope. If anything, the food got worse. Dry, tough, and scorched, I'm 95% certain the chicken they gave me was not prepared the same day I ordered it, but instead had spent the better part of a week underneath a heat lamp. I'm giving this place four stars based only on the quality and quantity of the food. The ambiance and staff of this place is below average. I ordered a medium mini bites and the portion was huge. I got honey hickory sauce on it. They did not skimp on the sauce but I was supposed to get two dipping sauces on the side. I got one blue cheese. But I did get two forks. It was enough for two people. The outside looks normal but when you go inside it's like 2x2. Reminds me of a check cashing place. There is no indoor or outdoor dining. There were two people behind the desk. One took my order and the other took my payment. They were literally on top of each other. The one girl was not that jovial and only interested in Typing on her laptop. There was an AC in the back but it was hot in there. Would I go back. Possibly but only if I ordered ahead. The heat wave continues, so the Door-Dashing dashing does too. Combined with the craving for fried chicken led us to Cluck-U. EPIC MISTAKE. We ordered chicken, fried mushrooms and mashed potatoes (we made veg here). AWFUL! Chicken was SO overcooked the color approached brown/black. The coating was dry, crumbly and bitter. The meat was dried out, chalky and very stringy. The old trick of a touch of corn oil couldn't help; it was just too far gone. Trashed it. Mushrooms were wet, soggy and really inedible. We tried tossing them under the broiler but they were just too far gone. Dog got them ('shooms are good for dogs) but showed less than his normal enthusiasm. WHY would a fry place put fried food into FOIL (JUST SAY NO!) and then FOAM (maybe WORSE)! Where's your pride? How could a cook let his food go out that way?? McDonald's food may be bad, but they spent millions learning packaging. Hint to Cluck-U dummies: go to the Golden Arches, order 40 large fries, eat them & then take the empty boxes back to your restaurant to put your fried food in. NEVER ALLOW FRIED FOOD TO CONDENSATE. NEVER. I didn't appreciate all the water drops forming a small pond inside my foam box of 'shrooms. Soggy food is garbage. Wise up. Truth is we should have known better from a place know for slimy wings. For some reason they bread em before cooking, so the sauce turned them into a wet, mushy mess. Paid for the delivery fee as well as a tip and was told that the driver will not be returning back with my drink. I paid for it and on top of paying for my combo I paid a delivery fee and tip and no one is concerned about providing proper customer care. When you do wrong you're supposed to make it right. I wasn't asking for anything for free I was missing something and I deserve to have what I paid for. The first thing the idiot on the phone said to me was "That order was delivered a long time ago". Already pissed, I repeated numerous times --- my order never arrived. The fool on the other end of the line them called the driver who claimed she had delivered my order - had rang the bell and left the order outside. By the way, I have a RING device at my door. The minute someone steps on my steps it alerts my husband and I directly ---to our phones. We have no recording of anyone delivering my order. Long story short - after talking to the driver who was basically full of shit and then calling the restaurant back - only to be insulted as the idiot in the other end now stated that his driver doesn't lie. As if I was making up this story. How unprofessional! What a joke! I will NEVER order from CLUCK U in South Orange NJ again EVER! How disgraceful is it that now I have to wait for my money to be returned to my account because an establishment that I thought stood by their commitment to customers really is a low level badly organized company that really doesn't give a dam about their customers. GF talked a lot about this chain back when we were living in San Francisco, so I was excited to try it. We're both BIG on hot and spicy anything, so again, I was excited to try it. GF says their menu has expanded quite a bit to offer other options. I just wanted to try the wings. The spiciest sauce is their "911" and you have to sign a waiver for it. I decided to try the sauce just one notch under their spiciest, "Thermo Nuclear BBQ." It was sloppy wet, but I think some folks like that. Not me. I thought the sauce was pretty good, but not as spicy as I expected. On a scale of 1-10 on the hot meter, I'd give it a 6. "911" next time...hope it doesn't disappoint. read more

So-so chicken wings. Somehow these are not the same as the wings I remember from the Cluck U Chicken at Rutgers New Brunswick. The chicken comes in multiple levels of spiciness: - Mild - Atomic - Nuclear - Etc... Unfortunately, the wings are a little too soggy for my taste after they put the sauce on. Cluck U can provide either Ranch or the standard Blue Cheese dip for the chicken. Somehow we didn't get any celery or carrot sticks with our order. Person who takes orders does not do his job well, cannot even read your order back to you with competence. Took over an hour to deliver. They screwed up my sandwich which I was not able to eat (I confirmed w/ them several times on the phone what I wanted on my sandwich). I called, they agreed to give me a credit. Next time I tried to order, they said the credit was $2.50 on an $8.00 sandwich. The person on the phone sheepishly told me only the owner could deal w/ credits. Very good plain fried and honey flavored chicken. Nice and crispy and not too greasy. Salad was fresh and plentiful. Fries were less soggy than other delivery places because they line the containers with foil. They were out of a lot of the side options when I placed the order at 5 :40 pm. They make ok chicken. Their wings are the best thing on their menu by far. I'm kind of obsessed with their sugar clicker bees...
