Beautiful presentation, but the flavors missed the mark Sunday errands had me in the area, and I originally just wanted to grab a banh mi. CO had been sitting in one of my Yelp Collections, so I decided it was finally time to give it a try. Located in Park Plaza, parking was plentiful and easy. I was warmly greeted when I walked in, and my first impression was great. The restaurant is beautiful inside, but since it was such a gorgeous day and they were seating outside, I happily chose a table on the patio. Along with the regular, drink and happy hour menus, I was given a menu featuring their new Bento Box Lunch. Curiosity won. I ordered the Chicken & Gyoza bento for $17: teriyaki chicken, pork and ginger gyoza, mixed green salad with carrot ginger dressing, maze gohan onigiri rice and a shoyu egg. When it arrived, it was beautiful. Everything was neatly compartmentalized and visually very appealing. Unfortunately, the flavors didn't live up to the presentation. The biggest issue was balance. The teriyaki chicken was overwhelmingly sweet. The gyoza had a nice ginger-forward flavor, but the accompanying dipping sauce was so salty that I couldn't really enjoy it. I eventually broke apart the onigiri and used the plain rice to temper some of the sweetness and saltiness. Ironically, my favorite thing was probably the salad. Fresh, crisp and delicious. My only quibble was that some of the greens were quite large for something being eaten with chopsticks; smaller, bite-sized pieces would have made it easier to enjoy. Service was pleasant and well-intentioned, although a little too attentive for my preference. Sometimes when I'm dining solo, I simply want to enjoy my meal quietly without frequent check-ins or conversation, and I would have appreciated a little more space. I really wanted to love this one. The setting was lovely, the presentation was beautiful and the menu has some genuinely interesting dishes--including laksa, which caught my eye. But after such an uneven experience with something as straightforward as teriyaki chicken and gyoza, I'm hesitant to venture into the more complex dishes. Would I return? Maybe. There was enough here that I'd be willing to believe I simply ordered the wrong thing. But the Bento Box wouldn't be my choice again. Life is too short not to eat well, sleep well or travel well. The weekly specials are a hit. HH 4-7 pm with drink specials daily including sushi specials 1/2 off on T/Th. Thats a great weekday experience. I was forewarned that the wagyu was removed so I went with my classic, a Sunset Roll. It was mostly cream cheese but my Lychee Tini was hit'n. I also indulged in the Katsu and Rangoon. I wanted a robust experience. To be honest this location isn't as good as Waverly. However, I do feel that its a great location with outside seating, too. Great service. Fun atmosphere. Really cool decor as you walk in. You can also hear the men in the kitchen talking over the music... And hear exactly what they're saying... It's hard to enjoy your meal with that going on. (And the music is loud) I'd give the sushi 5/10. It was okay. They lather it in sauce. Whether it's eel, unagi, glaze or mayo. Its overpowering. First time trying this place. Wings were dry which was a bummer. Vietnamese ramen came out and it was missing the main protein: pork belly. Pork belly tasted good though. I added shrimp for $5. They were tiny shrimps. Laksa was okay. Food overall was expensive. Service could be better. Long wait to order and for the food to come out. I've had some mixed experiences here in the past...but I remember not quite loving the experience here last time. Still, I decided to give it another try. Well, immediately, I remembered why I didn't quite love this place. Just like last time, the place was literally freezing-cold. As much as I love A/C, this place goes over-the-top with the cooling. Then their outlandish price points! For instance, their Crispy Tuna Rice appetizer is priced at nearly 20 bucks. Really??? I've NEVER seen this appetizer priced so high...ANYWHERE...not even the swankiest places in NYC or LA. Then my order...Curry Laksa was 29 bucks, once I added Shrimp. BTW, they add 5 bucks for 4 small shrimps. What a rip-off! I really liked this dish way back...but this time, not so much. The curry broth was weak this time. The broth was much more yellow (versus more orange)...very diluted! While the veggies were fresh in this Laksa dish, they were just not that tasty. In the past, I remember appreciating the freshness of the veggies...but definitely not the variety that is at all appetizing. In short, this was the worst Curry Laksa from this place yet...while the most expensive. At Open Rice, you'll get a MUCH better, richer version of Curry Laksa, complete with fresh, tasty veggies, at fraction of the price! Even YaMe Noodles serves up a better bowl of Curry Laksa. Service was just OK. The place itself is quite fancy with its sprawling roof design...but they ruined the ambiance of the place by putting half the chairs up during dining hours (?!?)! Plus, no overhead music either. Just a ton of cold air and high pricing lol! I'm about done with this place. Their price points are truly ridiculous...especially given their mediocre foods. I could only down half of my Curry Laksa bowl (Just not that good!)...and I left feeling quite ripped off (again)! Think I should know better not to return here again. read more

The meal was a bit more expensive than we were prepared for but they shared the best nights to go for half priced sushi or small plates so we can come back and enjoy more for less. C.O. is a Charlotte classic that can be trusted regardless of any changes to our food scene. I became a fan over 10 years ago and, no matter how much time passes between visits, they never disappoint. Love the Drunken Noodles w/steak--perfectly cooked noodles with just enough spice to keep it interesting. You also can't go wrong with the Malaysian wings or crispy edamame spring rolls--if only this was what it meant to eat our veggies as kids! (CO)LD nights call for CO! However I recommend going during any time of the year! The giant structure from the center of the bar spreading out against the ceiling brings instant vibes. Very cool indoor area and nicely/dimly lit, but also offers outdoor seating tucked in a little alley on the side of the building. Parking is easy as it's in Park Rd Shopping Center. Drinks were great, food was fantastic, and service was great too! When I asked for to-go boxes for leftovers, the waitress brought them to the table but cleared the food and packed it all up in front of me. read more

Kicking off the first of a series of birthday dinners, I met up with friends at CO. First things first, there was no heat as of Dec.4th. Initially we thought the restaurant was just cold, but the waitress confirmed the heat was OUT. No apology. No discount. Not cool, cold. After being told it was my birthday, the waitress didn't so much as acknowledge this in any way. Not even a "Happy Birthday". Those are my gripes. Food was great. They have very reasonable specials, drinks all day and food 4pm-7pm. I had beef dumplings, which were yummy, but could've been warmer. What was warm that I appreciated was my sushi. I took a chance and chose the one with sweet potato, not knowing how it would be incorporated. However, it was a puree. Very good. Atmosphere: 5 Food: 4 Service: 2.5 I was looking for a place to take my boyfriend for a celebration dinner, and this place had such a cool vibe on the pictures online and we love Asian food. The location is at a strip mall, so there's plenty of parking, and I promise the inside looks nicer than the outside. The inside is cool and modern, and the pictures of the lady on the wall look like my mom when she younger lol. We came on a Wednesday evening and there was plenty of seating indoor, and at the bar, but we opted for outdoor seating since it was so nice out. I also saw a sign for a great happy hour deal, so I'll have to come back one day. Let's start with the food. We ordered the Golden roll, and the pork belly buns, and both were delicious! For my entree, I had a Thai noodle dish that was extremely flavorful, while my boyfriend got the Korean rice bowl, which was not bad but not quite to the standard of the other dishes in our opinion. Our service was not fantastic and was the only downside of our meal. Although our server was ok, she was a little crass and borderline curt, something that I would expect from a local dive bar, but not a nicer place like this. At first I chalked it up to her being young and similar in age to us so she might have been more informal to be relatable, but at the end when we asked for the check, I wasn't sure if I had finished my meal enough to need a box. She said that she was either bring a box now or not coming back, which I thought was a little rude and out of nowhere. Of course she never came back to check on us after that either even though we were still dining for another 20 minutes. It was just a sour way to end an otherwise nice dinner for a special occasion. I was also shocked and a little offended to see a 30% tip option. Tipping has gone out of control and the guilt of selecting a more reasonable tip amount puts customers in an uncomfortable place, especially when the service was not great. I'd love to come back to try more of the menu because we had a nice experience in terms of the food and atmosphere, but I would hope to have a different server if I were to come back. read more

James & Molly L were visiting from NH and suggested we meet up here for dinner on a Saturday evening. He said, let's meet up there at 6p and I said yes of course. I was running a bit behind so I called on my cell phone to confirm our reservation. The lady was real nice and said 'we don't take reservations'. I said OK and hung up. Then i realized he just said 'lets see up at 6p, rather than around 6p' because if he said 'around 6p' I would know that he had not made a reservation. Then I would not feel like I had to be there right at 6p nor would I need to feel anxious sitting in traffic on I-77 North with a few thousand other people. I got there at 610p and there was hardly anyone there. Maybe because it was early? I don't know, I'm somewhat out of touch with the dining customs of todays young people. I sat at the bar and had a diet coke and sent James L a text and he responded, we'll be there in about 10 minutes. So, I was about 20 minutes early I keep telling myself, I MUST stop being on time. When they got there, they decided they wanted to sit on the patio which was fine. They both agreed that the temp in the dining room was a bit cool. I was going to disagree and say 'its cold' but I didn't so we went outside on the patio where we were the only ones. My first thought was 'we're not going to have good service out here' but I didn't say anything. They lady that waited on us could not have been nicer or more professional and helpful. I regret that I didn't get he name but she was Asian. I thought it was cool that she keyed our order in on a 'hand held device' so it went straight to the kitchen. I've seen these devices before to process payment but never for ordering. James & Molly L ordered different types of sushi and I had the spicy shrimp pad thai. They also ordered several different appetizers, spring rolls and been and kimchi dumplings. As the evening went on, it got cooler because it was mid-October so we were done by about 715p or so.
