Went last night for dinner-no hostess on a busy Friday night so you sat yourself. Waited 15 min to order a drink, another 20 to order our food and were told when ordering it would be a 40 minute wait for our food. While we waited I ordered a beer that never arrived, then was told they were out of Miller Lite bottles and the draft beer system was broken. Had to go to the bar to get a drink, and when I asked to have the football game put on (in a sports bar) it took an act of Congress to get that accomplished. It took an hour to bring out two burgers and fries (which were actually decent). However that didn't make up for the atrocious service, which was due to the fact that they were grossly understaffed. Do not go here unless you have a lot of time to wait around, a good sense of humor and no interest in actually watching sports. read more

Coaches used to be booming when it opened ~15 years ago. The food used to be hot, the vibe bumping, and the service great. Fast forward 15 years. 5 people in the place at 6 pm on a Friday. No vibe. TVs old and small. Only had canned beers. Bar service was fine. Can't imagine it would still be open if not attached to the Hilton Garden Inn. Very depressing place to be. read more

I'm staying at the Hilton Garden Inn. Coaches is attached to the hotel. It was a cold night so I decided to just try this place despite the mediocre reviews. I wish I hadn't. The woman in the bar was pleasant and put a game on that I wanted to watch. She also brought us drinks quickly. A male server came over and asked if we wanted food. We ordered and then WAITED and waited for our food. We were watching a game but after a long while he came and said that the food was running late because of a big party. The food finally came and it was just average at best, probably below average. He asked if we needed anything and I said ketchup. However he never brought any over. I finally just tracked down a bottle a few tables over and grabbed it. There are a lot of great food options in Bloomington, do yourself a favor and try someplace else. read more

It took a long time, but I finally made it back to Coaches. They weren't that busy on a Friday night, but there was a decent crowd there. Parking was easily available right out front. Considering they probably get a fair amount of their business from people at the hotel and those who live nearby, that might be the norm. The menu is VERY limited, and nothing I had on my first visit remained. There are some burgers, fish and chips, and some other items to choose from. They also had a Lent menu, which was a nice touch. My girlfriend got the fish and chips, and I got the steakhouse burger. I also got 10% off thanks to Yelp! I'll post pictures of these as they show the pride they have in serving their food. It was all very attractive and delicious! Everything was very flavorful, but that also raised the salt level a bit. The mozzarella sticks are some of the best I've ever had. Most places serve very bland cheese sticks with marinara sauce. These had a nice herb crust, and the marinara was very soft and light, so the two together made a great combination, and I normally NEVER dip my cheese sticks. Girlfriend had the fish and chips, and the fish was also breaded with a delicious herb coating. The burger is a half pounder, and it is big and DELICIOUS! When you put pepper bacon, pepper mayo, and A1 sauce on a burger, you're going to win when you put it on some good beef, and that's exactly what they do. I can normally put away a decent size meal, but this was actually just a bit much for me. I don't mind. It gives me a great lunch to look forward to tomorrow! The only reason I am going with 4 stars instead of 5 is because they seem to staff on the lean side, so our server was having to take care of tables but also take food outside into the hotel for room service or something. Everyone was very cheerful, which was very welcome. I NEED to go back here soon! I hope they can expand the menu a little bit down the road, but if I've learned one thing from watching Chef Ramsay, it's best to keep it simple and stick to your strengths. read more

This restaurant is average and will serve decent food at a slightly higher price than many of the other restaurants around. There are several better options within walking distance. This is an ok restaurant located inside the Hilton Garden Inn. I ate here twice once for breakfast, once for dinner. There are lots of TV screens everywhere so that you can enjoy sports while dining. Let's talk about dinner first. You get average quality American fare, but in large quantities. Its great if you like quantity, but don't care so much about quality. The cocktails are reasonably priced as well (coming from someone who is used to paying NYC prices). We started off with the nachos, which was huge, and just ok. For my main, I had the grilled salmon with 2 sides, I chose the rice pilaf and steamed broccoli. Both the rice and broccoli tasted like they had been smothered in butter. I just wanted plain rice to go with my salmon, but the butteryness of the rice just did not go well. Even though I have a huge appetite, I was actually semi full after the nachos and could not finish my main course. Let's talk about breakfast. I get free breakfast for being a Hilton Honors member. The breakfast was served buffet style, and it was bad. Thank goodness it was free, I would not pay for this. You get a bunch of cold foods like yogurt, fruit etc. They also have toast. You do have have to hunt down a waitress to bring you coffee. I wish it was self serve, then I would not have had to bother anyone. I would eat here for the convenience if I am staying here. This is kinda perfect for a college town bites and just a quick stroll from campus. Coaches' is keeping it classy, sticky, and sweet with their Teriyaki glazed Salmon. Check out their @devourbtown CATCH OF THE DAY MENU, now through April 1st. An oldie but a goodie, the bacon cheeseburger, loaded with veg, simmered & saucey, sandwiched between a sweet roll. After eating this big bite of heaven, you won't know if your coming or going. The Aloha is a tender juicy chicken sammie with thick ham and grilled pineapple that will have your taste buds at a luau. If veg is more your style check out their field of greens devour special featuring this big and tasty Portobello burger! We also got the tenderloin. This baby will barely fit on the camera and its pretty delicious too! Loving these sweet rolls for all the sammies! I was a fan overall. Bar food is not my choice of cuisine, but if I happen to be back in this area and needing a quick bite or a group after the game, this is the perfect place! read more

Quite arguably the worst dining experience I've ever had. We waited an hour for our food in a completely empty restaurant (less than 10 patrons total). The chicken sandwiches we ordered were terrible quality and were $11. The chicken patties didn't even fit 1/2 the size of the bread. Our pitchers of beer were also $30 a piece. We were given zero discount for the terrible service and food. The owner of this restaurant should be embarassed. I'll smile when I see this place permanently closed three months from now. read more

I decided to stay at this Hilton because it was supposed to have a full restaurant with room service. How disappointed were we when we went to order the food service and were given this overpriced kids menu? We were told the "menu" (using this term loosely) is the same whether we dined in room or in restaurant. This is not a restaurant, it is one of those bistros that hotels try to pass off as restaurants but all they do is microwave frozen chicken nuggets. Beyond disappointed. They don't even have dessert! We actually live in Bloomington and were hoping that this could be one of our new regular rotation restaurants. We were wrong. This is basically an overpriced McDonalds. I suspect that every single college town in the U.S. has a Coaches Bar & Grill or a Coaches Corner Bar & Grill...be that as it may, they are handy little outlets for quenching one's thirst while catching up on the sports scene. For Indiana University in Bloomington Indiana the Coaches Bar & Grill is hooked up to the Hilton Garden Hotel on College Avenue. Since it is hard by the hotel it acts as the hotels food outlet. Just off the hotel lobby and all indoors, this restaurant is perfect when you are staying at the hotel. Whether you meet someone there or use it as the hotel restaurant, it works with the hotel to provide a nice hotel/restaurant combination. There must be two dozen TVs in the bar so you will not lack for entertainment. The theme is Indiana University coach memorabilia, but they also have stuff from other famous State of Indiana peeps such as Larry Bird of Indiana State and Boston Celtics fame. When we were there it was a late night stop so we shared a sample platter (pretty good but some of the food had been hanging out for awhile) and a couple of Killian's Irish Red (always a nice choice). They have lots of beer choices...maybe a dozen on draft...and a full bar for those looking for something else. Pretty extensive bar menu filled with pub grub selections. We'll go back to try some of the other offerings. Service can be spotty with all the college kids working here, but it isn't too bad. read more

Most of the time I would rate Coach's a 3-star for food but I feel the potential to upgrade to a 4-star with a little effort. Some items, such as fish and chips and burgers are great....kids menu good, and the atmosphere is pretty nice for a hotel bar. Problem is that service is hit-or-miss, some items are bland (chicken fingers, etc) and the dining room is often EMPTY....which leads to less fun, but also no waiting!! Despite the poor reviews on Yelp, we decided to give this place a try because it's TGIF, and according to the reviews, this place is fairly empty, secondly, it's Fish and Chips for $6.50, who can deny such temptation? And we wanted a bar with TVs to show the grand opening ceremony of Olympics. And to our surprise, we totally enjoyed our experience dining here tonight. A guy welcomed us when we walked in, very friendly and led us to a table with the perfect TV view and our waitress, Suzanne, is sweet and attentive, food was served promptly and the waffle fries + steak fries were piping hot and crispy. The fish and chips was pretty good and so was the big portion of pork tenderloin sandwich with fresh vegetables in it. The price was pretty reasonable considering that we had two entrees, one drink, one dessert and it totaled up to $ 24.95+. If I were to complain one thing, I'd have to say the multilayer-ed chocolate cake was just okay, pretty rough, dry loose texture? Now, when I think of it, you could probably get those in grocery stores. So, skip the chocolate cake and enjoy the entrees! read more

Went to this place tonight. Got there with a party of 8 people at 9:01 pm, thinking we would watch the NBA and NHL playoffs. We noted their posted hours online were that they close at 10:00 pm. Doors were locked. When I inquired, I was informed that management made the decision to close an hour early because they had less customers than staff. That checks out - the last time I went there was during the College Football National Championship game earlier this year. I thought in a Big Ten college town with two Big Ten teams in the national championship game, it might be busy. There were 3 other people in the entire restaurant. This appears to be a zombie restaurant that is on its last legs. Food and drinks were actually pretty good. Staff was very nice. But apparently nobody goes to this place and their management response is to intermittently shut down to mitigate losses. Seems like an obvious death spiral. Fool me twice . . . you can't get fooled again. read more

Jordyn is hands down the best server and supervisor at this restaurant. Steph and Josh are great bartenders and always know how to pour strong and satisfy customers. My biggest problem with coaches is their total lack of management. From the chefs to the general management, it's absolutely awful. They don't communicate among their staff and food is frozen. Basically fried and served straight from the freezer. I would stay away based on management alone, but if you're the rare out of town customer who wanders in here, ask for Jordyn, Steph or Josh. rest of management is absolute trash read more

Ew. I honestly can't rate this place a 1 star because it wasn't THAT bad but it doesn't deserve over 2 stars. The food is gross. I mean, I understand it is bar food, but it is awful. Stay away from this place. The service was the worst I've had in Bloomington. I was with a party of 8 and we were the only people in the entire place. We were very courteous to our waiter yet he didn't seem to care about anything we said. He got a number of orders wrong and then insisted that HE was right! I've never seen anything like that before. The food was also pretty gross. We got nachos, which had no salsa, no sour cream. It was just dry and kind of gross. The fish and chips were probably the least tasty I've ever eaten. This is supposed to be a sports bar, yet the TVs were obstructed by the walls and/or ceiling. Very bad planning. Not only that, but most of the pictures on the TVs were so fuzzy, that we couldn't even make out what was happening on them. I'm not going back here. I moved to Bloomington, IN recently and have been checking out the local restaurants. My husband and I visited Coach's last weekend and was thrilled to find what will certainly be a regular destination. Jordan, our server, did a great job anticipating our every need. I never had to ask for anything. It was my luck that Coach's was running a great promotion, the Tap Takeover by Taxman Brewing Company. I was able to taste several delicious offerings ultimately deciding on my favorite to pair with my meal. I heard the wings were good so I started off with BBQ and Teriyaki flavored wings. I am pretty picky about my wings and was pleasantly surprised. They are very meaty with a little crispness on the outside and flavored perfectly. I followed with the grilled chicken sandwich which was very good along with yummy seasoned french fries. The portion was huge. The kicker was that I was told by Jordan that the tater tots were really good so my husband ordered them and she was right, they are addictive! It was crowded that evening so I got to see several meals come out of the kitchen. All the meals looked delicious. I will definitely be back. read more

The one thing this place has going for it is that it is relatively inexpensive food. The quality of the food is mediocre at best. I had a burger. It was cooked fine, but the quality of the ingredients was only as expected for the price of the burger. The beer was moderately priced--maybe on the steeper end than what I'd rather do. The server that I had was incredibly annoying. I'm sure he was just trying really hard on a slow night. But he'd visit our table approximately every 2-3 minutes asking if our meal was OK or if we needed something else. My friend and I went to enjoy a game on the TVs - this really disrupted our experience. I really regretted that our server also did not let us know about the food specials. He was quick to note the beer specials (nothing fantastic) however, I would have appreciated knowing about the cheaper food option (even though I didn't pay too much in the first place). Overall, it was mediocre. Nothing special. If you need to watch the game and some of the other sports bars are full or you want a quieter environment, then it's not a bad place to visit. Lastly -- important notice!!! This restaurant does not appear as a restaurant in your credit card statements (since it's part of the attached hotel). Thus, any of you expecting higher rewards for restaurants, don't expect it here because it'll show up as a hotel expense instead. Just thought you should know if you have Discover or something similar which does higher % cash back for restaurants every once in a while. read more

If you are looking for a menu with a large selection of bar and grill type food at reasonable prices then Coaches meets that criteria. We went two nights in a row because we were staying in the hotel and didn't have a ton of time to go elsewhere. While the food wasn't anything to write home about, it was good. The buffalo wings were very good. Nice and hot. Onion rings were crisp. Steak fries tasted only slightly better than the kind I can buy in the store. The grilled cheese I had tasted good, but there was too much cheese so the cheese that oozed out from the bread congealed rather quickly. I got over that though and would order it again if I was in the mood for it. Overall the food was worth the inexpensive price. Both times we had groups of 5+ people. Each time the bar/restaurant was not busy at all. Service was always correct, polite and courteous. They had no problem splitting the bill for us and the fact that you can charge it to your room was nice. They also had a good beer selection. read more

Our food came out in a decent amount of time. My pork tenderloin sandwich was HUGE. I could not finish that sandwich for the life of me. This sandwich was definitely a sandwich to share. The spicy southwest burger was mediocre and even though they claim it to be very very spicy, it just had a little kick to it. Don't be intimidated by the ghost pepper cheese!! Both portions of the steak fries and onion rings were generous. Onion rings were huge but you can definitely tell they're not fresh & were previously frozen. Service was a delight and everyone is nice there! Our waiter had a trainee with him & he was doing a great job! Coaches was a super big disappointment. I went there to watch the IU/Rutgers game on the TVs, and it was dead, which I found strange, especially on a game day. I had a Fat Tire and the unlimited chips and salsa. Now, the unlimited chips and salsa would have been an amazing deal if they were amazing chips and salsa -- but really they opened a can of Pace and served stale red, yellow, and blue tortilla chips. This bar/restaurant is attached to the Hilton. Hubby and I went here because at check in you get a voucher for 500 HHonors (Gold baby!!) points if you spend $25 or more. Atmosphere at the time was crazy because the hotel was hosting sports tournaments for the weekend, but since they left it seems to be dead. Mind you, school is out for summer. I ordered the Caesar wrap but made it into a ranch wrap instead. It was delicious. They have an option of sides and I got waffle fries! They were delicious as well. Ranch was amazing. They have happy hours specials all throughout the week. Our server was a sweet heart; I am taking a week away from kids and the place was full of kids so he moved us where there was no children. You can take your food to the courtyard of the hotel. Same with pitchers of beer (48 oz.) just not the towers (100 oz). Pitcher was $8, tower $15. I like that I can order room service from them while staying in the hotel. Bill was 30ish with pitcher of beer, hubby's dinner, my dinner, and chips and salsa. I was very disappointed with my experiences at Coaches Bar and Grill. My first visit was with a large group on a night with hardly any other customers. The service was terrible, we had to remind the waitress that we had ordered another beer several times. In addition, once our food finally came, she brought half the table, failing to bring the other half for another 10 minutes. The food was very generic tasting and not at all satisfying. Thinking perhaps that the first instance was a new waitress or a bad night because of the large group, I gave the restaurant another shot with a friend. The experience however, was very similar. Bad service. Bad food. Ridiculous excuses for drink specials. The food was good and beverages were generous. The service was awful. They were understaffed for a large party. One of the meals was not served until the table was almost done with their meals. When we tried to cancel the dinner the server said, "Oh, it's up there. Umm, I will go get it." She did not offer to take it off our bill and charged us full price for the meal." It took the server 45 minutes to get everyone their bills. Then the server had the nerve to blame a customer for not saying something to her about not getting her bill. The customer could have dined and dashed but instead waited for at least 30 minutes for the bill. Everyone had paid and left the table. read more
