I love coffee shops that open early and while Coal River Coffee Company in Saint Albans opened at 7, that'll do. I was here at 6:45 and that gave me time to hook up a power cord to one of the light poles along the street and charge my on board battery. When they opened, I was the first customer in, so I set up my laptop and got comfortable as they dealt with the regulars for a bit getting their coffee. I don't usually check menus, but I was surprised to see a "Keto Au Lait" this morning and that's what I ordered. Heavy cream and coffee? That's perfect for my eating regime. I was here for four more hours, pounding away at my laptop and enjoying the ebb and flow of this fabulous #LocalCoffee joint. It's a real gem and I wish them much success. The street was totally blocked off, but I assume that this is not typical as they were prepping for some sort of special event. Having seen that the specials (oriented around a local street festival) included a muddy river chai based on brown sugar, I was tempted. It was a foamy drink, but one that left little doubt about the amount of brown sugar in there. I wasn't quite tempted by the pastries, which seemed excessive given I already had something sweet. I don't get to go very often, but when I do I am always surprised at the different items they carry. I usually have something with a mint base in my coffee, if not available, I will have a caramel based drink! I like the laidback atmosphere and friendly service. If I am having trouble making up my mind the servers will make suggestions after asking my favorite flavors. read more

A nice find off the beaten path, in a quaint little downtown area. We detoured here because of the wonderful reviews. They have an excellent selection of coffee drinks, alternative milks, flavored syrups and sugar free syrups. They also have a selection of wines. The staff seems friendly. We attended a coffee event hosted by Jeff Jarrell. The owner of the coffee shop Michael educated us on the history of coffee, where he gets his beans, how he roasts, where he's lived and his encounters with coffee growers. It was very interesting!! We even had a coffee tasting! Sooooo good! And I'm not really a coffee drinker... . My hubby had a chai latte hot and I had a chai latte iced. The baristas are polite and helpful. I wanted to update my review after visiting for lunch! I had a delicious apple and Gouda grilled cheese, with a side of kettle chips. I went with my mom who had a classic grilled cheese with a bowl of tomato soup. Our sandwiches were very good, and the tomato soup was simple and flavorful. I also had a seasonal latte, the Love Struck with red velvet and white chocolate flavoring. It was tasty and pink! We had a lovely time at lunch there with some good, simple food. Went in with my mom niece and nephew and no one greeted us. There was three employees behind the counter. Stood at the counter for a few minutes and nothing. I finally asked what a couple of the drinks were before they spoke to us. I'm not sure if the employee standing at the register was off work but I wouldn't know that because he was standing there‍ We got 4 drinks and it was around $12 there were no listed prices for the drinks anywhere that I saw. I got a chai latte and it was a little watery but had a lot of chai spice to it. My niece got a frozen hot chocolate and she liked it. My mom got a London fog. She didn't like it. She said it was very sweet and probably would've been better without the maple syrup. Decor was very cute but I did t care for the service off the bat. read more

I live in Pittsburgh but my in laws live in St. Albans. As a coffee fanatic I often struggled with finding good coffee in the mornings while visiting as my in laws are not coffee drinkers. I stumbled across coal river on Instagram and my mother in law got me some sample packs that she mailed up around Christmas and I've been obsessed ever since! I went in person for the first time yesterday and it was fantastic! The cold brew with cold foam is 100x better than the "big guys". Customer service was top notch and we were greeted as soon as we walked in. I wish there was a coal river coffee in Pittsburgh! My husband and I definitely plan on stopping in tomorrow morning before heading back to the 'burgh! read more

I really like this place. I drive from Charleston to St. Albans often because I'm a fan of their coffee. I enjoy the Kenya and Ethiopian roasts the most.
