It feels like you're trespassing through someone's farming area. THEN you go a little more on unpaved road & out of the blue is the Tumey Hills signage! Gorgeous sprawling green hills and mountains, it's how I imagine Ireland looking. The Hubs said the last time he went it was all dead & brown dirt so don't hold me to the exact pantone of greenery. :) As for the shooting, it's pretty awesome to have such a vast area to practice shooting. While we were there, two groups were hard core training. One looked like they were swat, with one in the back covering the front shooter. They had regular handguns. The group in the front had full armored vests, handguns, rifles, and semi-automatics. Everyone is spaced out but safety is safety. Just know your surroundings, be safe, & clean up after yourselves! No glass targets or craziness!

There is a short uphill part that takes you up the mountain to an obelisk, which is really cool! Especially in late February - April, everything is super green and the weather is just perfect. Since this trail is dog friendly, you will see a ton of dogs around and my three dogs always have a really great time! This trail also has sections that are biker and horse friendly, so keep that in mind if you have dogs or kids. Always look forward to coming back to this trail with my hubby and pups!!

The only thing I wish this lake/campground had were actual bathrooms and some shade. I've read that it was manmade but you would think they would consider building actual restrooms and/or shade even fake trees for shade. Otherwise, the lake was a gorgeous spot and the area was clean. I would definitely come back with other families but be more prepared with shade or head when the weather is slightly cooler lol. Highly recommend when you're in the area!

You never know what kind of wild life you will see and walk hike with caution rattle snakes blend in super good. I made the mistake of brushing my teeth with the water spicket one year so don't do that unless you want to get sick my stupidity. If you like fishing make sure you have a fishing license we went down to the lime one year with a kids like two year old fishing pole and a child hook and some lame person said we had a fish net and called the rangers on us and they all came looking for a net looked in my backpack in my truck in our ice chest in the back of my truck acting like we had done something wrong it was a huge embarrassing moment for them because they came In hot like I was a criminal with my wife and to young kids and the only thing was a trash bag that I collected trash people left around apparently they had a video of this so called net and the ranger told me after looking a this video that they must have mistaken a net for a trash bag. It's was super lame like I understand they have a job todo but the way it was handled in the beginning was not professional with kids around. Other then that I've always have had a great time in the heat we even went when the lake was dried up on the Harris creek side and camping one year and it rained we still had a great time. Yes it's not super party like as year in the past and that's ok you want that behavior drive up the road to the next lake. I wish they still had the little store but that closed up sadly. They need more people camping to get that open again.

Different than that of 3 bridges in North County, we find that decent hiking trails don't really exist unless you're willing to drive more toward the coast. This happens to fall very conveniently in the backside of Atascadero. One of our fellow hikers mentioned the morning time is a lot more "crisp" and I could see that... ...It's Shaded very nicely amongst the trees which, it did happen to be a triple digit day in the area so we didn't overheat. Rattlesnakes tend to freak me out... We were told there hasn't been a spotting but there is a warning amongst the entry of the path by the train tracks. I always say continue to be aware in the dry grassy plains next to the wood piles. It is rather annoying to run into dog dumpings as you hike, especially when you're not a dog owner but if you are a dog owner, then taking your doggo is a great idea!

one of the many, many wonderful trails at pinnacles nat'l park. from the apex, you can see almost…read morethe entire park on a clear day, the beautiful balconies, ridges, forestry and wildlife that belongs to pinnacles. you can access this trail from: +west side: chaparral trailhead parking lot, 1.8mi hike to western trailhead of high peaks +east side: old pinnacles trailhead, 1.3mi hike to eastern trailhead of high peaks +east/south side: bear gulch parking lot, 0.5mi to southern trailhead of high peaks we chose to start from the east side, hike the old pinnacles trail to balconies, break at the chaparral trailhead for lunch, then return east via the high peaks trail. this was a TOUGH climb up, especially since it was only a little after noon, the sun was strong, and we'd already hiked 4+ miles from the east. many breaks were taken, call it "photo pace" hiking, and after some time, we finally reached the western side of the high peaks trail...more climbing awaited us, as did awesome views of this treasured park. there were many switchbacks, each turn offering a different view, so of course, i had to pause each time to snap a pic! there are no restrooms, water fountains, or other amenities here. due to the time of day we were here, there also wasn't much shade. definitely bring plenty of water, wear a hat, sunscreen, and light clothing if coming here during summer/autumn months.

There was a small sign that indicated a part of the trail was under maintenance but once on the trail there's little direction other than small signs that tell about the trail. With no warning, suddenly you're in a very overgrown part that continues onto a broken bridge. By the point we got here we assumed we were more than halfway and didn't wanna risk more poison ivy which he had hardly gotten past. I'm glad we chose to continue because after getting past the broken bridge which was blocked off at the end (not the end we had come on) it was open, far less poison ivy and we made it to a road intended for vehicles to grt to the campground I think? It had some beautiful parts but not the sort of thing to bring kids out ages. Very narrow path for most of it!

If you're staying at the camp ground you can easily get to the trail by following the park map. If you're not visiting the campsite there is a pullout area across the campground entrance on the other side near the beach where you can walk the trail under PCH. Coming from the beach trail around the loop you'll get around 450 feet of elevation gain, the trail is pretty simple to follow but if you're looking for direction to follow online there is a map on All Trails under "San Simeon trail to Washburn Campground Loop"
