This happened a few months ago. Took my wife's car in for the annual safety inspection. Long blond-hair white guy (Mike?) fails the car because a side marker light was out. Not a brake light, or headlight . . a friggin side marker bulb. Of course, he's willimg to replace it for $90. I say, " no way will I pay that for a bulb replacement." He puts a "fail" sticker in the windshield. I go to the car in the parking lot and tap on the bulb, and it lights! Even charges me a dollar to then put a "pass" sticker on the windshield. 5/15/24 2 PM Wednesday LOCATION: Located on the corner of Clipper Drive and Old Bridge Road. It is connected to Coastal Wholesale Gas & Food. PURPOSE OF VISIT: Truck was shipped into state and before registering it with the DMV we had to get an emissions and inspection check. You need to pass both in the state of VA. TERMINOLOGY: (For those who have different guidelines in different states) EMISSIONS- involves testing gas emissions for the purpose of reducing air pollution. INSPECTIONS: Ensures that your vehicle meets safety and mechanical standards by law. We were a walk in, Mike took us right away. The truck passed emission test, failed inspection. BAD BRAKES. The hubster was in agreement with that so we left the car for him to fix. Mike also gave us options as far as taking it elsewhere or doing it ourselves . I asked a staff what I could do for them and they reported a review would be great. This made me go on to look at the reviews that had already been posted. I was pretty shocked at some of the reviews because I have had a totally different experience. I typically go here for gas because in the Woodbridge area outside of Costco or Sams it is definitely the cheapest (if you pay cash) and I have never had an issue with the "quality" of the gas. The worst is the drivers who do NOT follow the arrows because they cannot wait 5 minute for a pump on their side of the car. I have gone ALL hours of the day and ALL days of the week and am always met with a friendly face and had positive exchanges. I have an old VW that had had the check engine light on for years, took it to the dealership/other garages, just poured money into it and the issue was never solved. Randomly took it to to Coastal. Singh (I think) provided transportation for me since there isn't really a waiting area and I don't live that far and whatever magic they did the issue was fixed and I thought for a great price compared to what I had paid to try to get it fixed in the past. The light came on one time shortly after took it back he gave me some advice and has not happened since (been a couple years now). Having this experience I have recommended the Coastal because it is not initially the place I would think to go. Have taken the cars there for inspection and emissions as well. Issue starts when you turn the old trusty dusty VW so I take it in. Same staff assists me with transportation, gives me an estimate, and fixes the front axles same day (shows me them so I know there was a legit need even though I knew there was a need), and it was about $500 cheaper than another estimate I received. I have driven the car long distances since and it feels like I am driving a younger car again! I have been nothing but impressed (and that can be challenging for me) with both the garage side and gas side. read more

Terrible Experience - Dishonest and Unfair Shop! I had a very bad experience at Costel Auto Repair in Old Bridge (2010). These people are extremely unfair and dishonest. I went there for a simple inspection and emission test. They said it would cost $50, which was $10 more than other places, but I agreed. A few minutes later, they called me and said three lights were out and it would cost $151 to fix! I told them three lights should cost no more than $30, but they said $71 was just for labor. On top of that, my card was charged $5 extra for every transaction. When I hesitated, they said if I didn't pay, they would "reject" my inspection for 15 days. I felt forced to pay $160 unfairly, and it completely ruined my morning. The man I dealt with was rude, aggressive, and smelled of alcohol. This place should be investigated by the authorities. If you ever go there, make sure to get the total price in writing first. But honestly, I recommend staying far away from this place. They are greedy, rude, and dishonest. read more

I brought both of my cars in for a safety inspection. A few days later, one of them began making odd noises, and I couldn't locate the source. Then, while driving on the highway after work, it broke down completely. The issue turned out to be a failed alternator. The shop quoted me $800 for the replacement, so I bought the part myself and had the repair done for $400. My second car wouldn't start--I had to jump-start it just to bring it to the shop. They diagnosed a bad battery and quoted me $300 for a replacement. Instead, I purchased a battery from AutoZone and replaced it myself for $180. Both vehicles experienced problems shortly after passing their safety inspections. Whether coincidental or not, I've lost trust in this shop. There is 1 mechanic called Mike I would give him 5+ stars otherwise, they do not follow instruction. total rip off and caused more problems than what I started with. My grandsons Uncle had to come in from Manassas to fix the mess that was create. (He is a mechanic). In addition to that it seems as though the car had been taken for a joy ride. As we found loose change, French fries and a receipt from Arbby's. after 2 weeks I am still waiting for a call about the part that Costal had to order, Uncle got the part in two days. They do a terrible job. It took them two days to replace the air conditioning compressor on my van. With their parts and labor...they wanted to charge me $3,400!!! I brought the compressor in and they charged me $867 for the labor. It cost me $1,367 in total. I paid $700 for the same parts and labor in Chicago two days earlier on my other van!!! At my regular mechanic. You shouldn't even buy cigarettes from them, let alone have any contact with them. And when I tried the van after their work, I heard some unusual noise. I went back to them and the manager said it was ok. I had been driving for about 10 miles when the van started to lose power and soon started smoking like crazy at the exhaust. I normally stop at the first exit and saw that the mechanic forgot to put the safety ring on the turbine hose, the hose had separated and that's why there is no more power and smoke. They only know how to charge dearly for their unprofessional services. People who have deal with them probably know what I'm talking about. What started out as a routine trip to get my car inspected ended up being a almost week long nightmare with this company. I took my car to Coastal on Thursday, the day before my inspection expired. Even before starting the inspection the manager pointed out problems with two of my tires which I thought was very nice of him. He agreed to file the claim with my insurance, and then to call me and let me know when the tires were ordered. He said they should arrive on Saturday. When I didn't hear from him, I called. He said he was still waiting on approval from the insurance company. I called the insurance company the next day - the day my inspection was to expire - to find out what the issue was. They told me that they had approved the claim on the phone with the mechanic the day before! I called and told the mechanic what they said. He initially denied what the insurance company told me but then did an aboutface and said he would order the tires and that they would arrive on Monday. In the meantime, I'd have to find another way to work because of my expired inspection. On Monday, I called Coastal to see if the tires had arrived. I was told that the manager wasn't in on Mondays and they didn't know anything about my tires. I called back on Tuesday. The manager was there and told me the tires had not arrived yet, but that he would call me when they did. About 5:30p he called and said tires had arrived and that we could bring in the car the next morning. My wife took off work and showed up at the mechanics door as they were opening the next day. Bizarrely they told her that the tires still had not arrived, but were on their way... even though they had called me the night before and said the tires were there. She told them she would just wait since she had taken off from work to get the tires and to have them complete the inspection. Incredulously they told her she couldn't wait at the shop! (That should have been a warning to me.) When she called me at work and told me what had happened, I called the manager. He said "of course the tires are here". He said "I told you yesterday they were here". When I asked why they had not installed them on the car when my wife brought it to them, he claimed that my wife had told them she only had five or 10 minutes (!) for them to change the two tires and inspect the car. He said that when he told her it would take an hour, she told him she didn't have time and left. I told him there is no way she - or anyone - would have thought they could change the tires in 5 or 10 minutes. I repeated that she had taken off work specifically to get the tires changed and understood that she understood it would take time for them to do the work. He continued to stick to his ridiculous story that she wouldn't stay and let them do the work. Of course when I related to her what they claimed, she said that was crazy. And patently untrue. My wife and I both ended up taking off work that afternoon to take the car back. At that point we finally got the tires which miraculously showed up and a new inspection. But that is not the end of the saga. When I picked up my car I found grease all over my carpet that the mechanic had tracked in. When I started the car I found that they had put 41 lb of pressure in both left hand tires and 30 lb of pressure in both right hand tires! (When I pointed it out to the manager, he said the car would 'eventually' just adjust itself.) Besides telling me a string of the biggest whoppers I've ever heard a business tell, Coastal's workmanship turned out to be shoddy at best. If that's how careful they are with filling tires with air, I wonder what else they overlooked while working on my car. I'm sure that will continue to worry me until I have it checked out by a different mechanic. The auto repair business has it's share of characters but Coastal takes the prize for testing the patience -- and gullibility of their customers. POSTCRIPT. I wanted to add this final detail. I took my car to another auto repair shop because the car's tire pressure reading didn't match what I measured in the tires manually. That shop told me that if tires are rotated, the car has to reprogrammed so that it knows which tire is in what location. They kindly offered to reprogram them for free. I told them how Coastal had claimed the car would adjust itself. They said that's not correct. Just one more count against either Coastal's expertise... or honesty. read more

We have been going to Coastal for state inspections and emissions tests for over 4 years. They have always been efficient. I recently popped over due to a "noise" and it ended up being my serpentine belt--which I had replaced by them. When another, different "noise" started a few weeks later, I went back and they said the issue was something that was covered by my manufacturer's warranty (a fuel cover, I think) and they directed me to my dealership. Upon bringing the car to the dealership, the service person at the dealership seemed to not understand the "noise" and the Coastal mechanic was kind enough to take our phone call and talk him through it. The service person ordered the part for my car and it will be repaired free of charge. I appreciate that the mechanics at Coastal take time to look at my car when I pop over, will work quickly if there is a safety issue, are willing to communicate with outside mechanics and would rather earn money than take money for repairs that can be free to the customer. I like all three of the mechanics and all are personable and professional. read more

Horrible!!! They charged me $100 more than they originally said. Claiming it was because my tire had a nail in it and needed patching. $100 for a nail patch??? They ended up not rotating my tires but still charged me for it. Every time I have gone back to talk to the manager he is not there. He was not there when we went to pick up the car. Shady place indeed. My husband took his car there last year and they did a couple things that he didn't ask for or expect. They didn't call to let him know. I just went in for a screw on the tire of a small sedan. He wanted to charge me $48 to fix the tire and I said no, he charged me $20 to place the spare. I guess he saw a woman and knew I could not change the flat tire myself. I had no option but to ask him to change the flat tire for the spare. Took it to another, HONEST shop and only paid $20 to fix the screw. He knew I didn't have an option and took advantage of the situation. NEVER AGAIN! read more

I take my car here all the time and have never had a problem. Mike, the main guy has even done some simple jobs for me without charging. I have also called him for quick advice. They do send out coupons via snail mail to help save you some $$$. Use one of them and you're good to go. This gas station is a rip off, I can't believe it has been not reported. I am referring to the food mart the guy behind the register will ring up items triple of the actual cost. I refused to pay what he crazily was ringing up. As soon as I refused his price he immediately said "I give you discount", so he can still make the sale. Today is the 24th, and the manager informed us that his "emissions guy" had left for the day, even though they offer to perform emissions. He proceeded to tell us that we could return tomorrow, but that they wouldn't honor the coupon since it would be the 25th. This is the second time I've had problems with these guys. I couldn't believe. Me being deaf - they took advantage of me. I took a friend's car to be inspected for emissions. I had a coupon for 50% off. As it was finished, I paid and went to the car but something ws bothering me because I got 4 ones back. I was thinking - it's 16 dollars. But when I got home, I looked at the receipt and realized that it was 14 and I was only handed 4 dollars in change. I should have checked before I left. Now I have to call the store and complain. DO NOT GO TO THIS SHOP, THEY WILL LIE TO YOU SO YOU SPEND MORE! My car broke down about 50 feet from here... Specifically, my serpentine belt snapped and I needed to have it replaced. Usually this is roughly a $60 repair job and one that I can do myself but figure since I was at a shop I'd go ahead and just have them do it for the convenience. I get a call the next day letting me know that the battery is dead and has to be replaced. Serpentine belt powers the alternator which in turn charges the battery, so OF COURSE it was dead. However, rather than even attempting to recharge it, these swindlers tell me that I have to pay $185 just so they can replace the battery to get it into the shop to determine how much it will cost to replace my belt. Needless to say, I was on the phone minutes later with AAA getting my car towed home to replace the belt myself for $12. And on top of that I didn't even need to charge the battery for more than 15 seconds before the car started right up. DO NOT GO TO THIS SHOP, THEY WILL LIE TO YOU SO YOU SPEND MORE! read more

Only one cashier works at a time and the cashiers are slow! Can only use credit inside, Don't know why! Guess they don't believe in debit. Place is DIRTY both inside and out. Too over Crowded for how small the store is. ATM never works or has cash in it. Must pay cash to get the cash price you see outside on the sign. If you use credit for the pumps, Then its 6 cents more per gallon. Not everything in the store scans. So they sometime enter a price on items. It's a pain to get in and out of that place during rush hour. Cant believe this place is still in business. read more
