Terrible people. They ignore your rental and then they use their ' preferred contractors' to rip you off because they neglect to pay any attention to the rental until it is horrible shape. Do not trust this company, especially if you are a military family! Reprehensible, deceitful business practices. We expressed concern about the presence of mold in a rental unit before we moved in because we could smell it, and the property manager, Harv Hofferbert, as well as the broker, Glen Russell, both immediately responded with hostility, antagonism, and denial, completely violating their obligation to respond to mold concerns promptly in accordance with VRLTA State Law. After contractors confirmed the extensive presence of mold in the unit several weeks later (also an indicator of Coastal Group's inability to properly manage and care for a rental property), Coastal Group would not let us out of our lease without retaining our security deposit as a "lease break fee", again violating state law. This was also contrary to assurances provided by Harv Hofferbert during the time period that he was courting us to be tenants, when he said in writing that "there would be no lease break fee if we were dissatisfied with the rental unit." As a military family, we had signed a lease site unseen due to mission commitments limiting our ability to conduct househunting on site. Coastal Group used this to deny our right to recoup our security deposit, and they refused to negotiate with the Navy JAG representing our case, disrespectfully yelling at him over the phone and challenging him to bring them to civil court. We would strongly caution anyone who is considering renting or managing a property through Coastal Group. read more

I would strongly warn anyone against doing business with this company. Unfortunately, the kind, sensible woman who owned the house I rented chose to have it managed by Nancy Palmer Russell. After the first couple interactions over minor repairs, she was so rude and unpleasant that I decided to only send my rent check to Coastal Group Inc. and deal with the owners directly for all other matters. For more than four years, I sent my rent check each month on time and had no other interaction with Coastal Group Inc. Prior to my move-out, I gave the owners more than 8 months notice. The primary owner granted permission to override any lease details and said she would inform the property management company of the change. But once I gave notice to Nancy Palmer Russell that I was leaving the property, she started threatening me. Because there were technicalities in the lease that were different from my verbal agreement with the owner, I tried my best to be accommodating with her requests and demands. But Nancy Palmer Russell was constantly sending emails and bullying me about one thing after another. She made untruthful allegations and then never apologized when I politely corrected her. It reached the point where I started to wonder if the amount of the security deposit was worth all the stress and difficulty in dealing with her. Though she had more than a month to show the place at her will, she put off listing the property until the last minute and I was forced to open my house to showings while I was in the middle of packing up. Aside from the agreement I had with the owner, I did everything I could to help her turn the property around in a timely manner. I hired the cleaning company that Nancy Palmer Russell requested (and paid them more than the going rate) to perform the clean out move. Without any warning, two months later, she sent me a security deposit refund for little more than half the amount I was owed. She had taken a non-refundable pet deposit that the owner wasn't even aware of. After talking to the owner again about the financial details, it became clear that portions of the money were unaccounted for. Why the property owners decided to pay Coastal Group Inc. agents to not do their job of managing the property but instead hassle their tenants is beyond me. There is no reason why a good, responsible tenant should be treated this way. read more

I have been renting a property from Coastal for just about a year and have had an all-around positive experience. The rental costs are incredibly reasonable given the location right on the bay! Any maintenance issues have been resolved quickly. The staff at Coastal have always been incredibly professional, friendly and helpful. I think they go above and beyond, and I would definitely use them again in the future and/or recommend them to family and friends. Unfortunately, I have rented from companies in the past that were unprofessional and whose maintenance efforts lacked quality. I am relieved to no longer have to deal with that!! read more

Terrible maintenance. AC dying for 2 summers now, continues to put bandaids on it. Electric bill went from 250 to 600....now 900 for AC unit that runs and doesn't cool the house. Front porch banister collapsed in March no repairs made. Tree removal not complete from 2 months ago, tree company broke fence in 3 places, never repaired. Roof had been leaking for a couple years, again.... bandaid fixes, furniture set is ruined. No follow up, no communication, would never recommend!! read more

Glenn Russell makes no effort to contact you in regards for a move out inspection let alone to give you an itemized deduction list regarding any damages he so claims have taken place with the legal 45 days they are provided. Good luck having a reasonable discusion with Glenn Russell or even getting him to answer his cell phone, can't reach him at the office either because he's never there. Can not get any answers from anyone at this company regarding the refund of my security deposit or pet deposit. They will try to push you over if you don't know your tenant rights! We have been doing business with Coastal Group since 2012. They are managing 2 rental homes for us. They have done an excellent job. They have worked with some of our tenants to help them, but ultimately the tenants just did not have the money to pay the rent. They also have to deal with owners that take awhile to respond to their notices. That is not Coastal Groups fault. Everyone in the office is very friendly and professional. I enjoy talking on the phone with anyone of them that call us, Kim is really nice. As a woman, I have never had any problems with Glenn talking down to me nor have I ever felt any disrespect from him. He is easy to talk to and listens to what I want to do with our homes. Since he is military, I can't imagine him throwing a fit. He has always been professional and yet extremely friendly. There is also no discrimination in this company. I can attest to having anyone and everyone in the homes. There is no difference in tenants and there is no prejudice. This company is a good company. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I went and check out a house that I was prepared to sign a lease for. I noticed online at their website they were advertising it for less than what they told me the rent would be. So I showed up at the lease signing with the security deposit that their website said it would be. I was told it was a mistake the Glenn Russell had a huge temper tantrum. He told me right off the bat I wasn't getting a house for a cent less that what he is saying it was even though website showed less. Multiple times said he didn't have time for this and screamed and yelled. I barely was able to speak couldn't get a sentence out over his hissy fit. If he would have calmly talked to me I probably would have paid the $100 more a more but because of his actions I knew that he was not the person to do business with. Why would I want to have a property manager that "doesn't have time" to manage my property I can only imagine the excuses he would have had. Stay away from coastal realty. They will screw you over! Glenn Russell and Josephine his assistant were so extremely rude I was almost in shock. I've never seen an adult act so childish. That's not how you run a business. I hope everyone does some background on him because I didn't look up reviews till I posted this one and he doesn't have a lot of kind words about him. Beware!!! In response to his comment saying I demanded things. Excuse me for thinking it's not unrealistic to ask that weather stripping be placed on the doors since I'm paying utilities. And that a door handle be placed on the back door since it was missing. Also couldn't negotiate anything over his temper tantrum. I am with another posting here, if I could give them ZERO stars I would. Absolutely the most unprofessional place for renting I have ever encountered. My husband is active duty military and after dealing with Mr. Russel for the year long lease that we signed for a property on Ocean View Ave in Norfolk, we CANNOT in good conscience recommend anyone, especially military personnel rent or buy from this business. For starters, the place was filthy when we moved in and Mr. Russel offered a $60 discount if we did the cleaning ourselves..needless to say, we shouldn't have accepted that. The oven itself took 3 separate nights of cleaning with oven cleaner before it was usable and that's just the start of the cleaning. Gross! The tenant in Unit A was extremely difficult and that's putting it mildly. When we asked Mr. Russel to please address the issues with her, we were blatantly ignored, until we were forced to call the police on the tenant for blocking our path to our entrance. This was not the only incident with the tenant in Unit A either, each time we asked for the property manager to address, we were ignored. When we moved into Unit B we addressed several maintenance problems thru the proper channels, one of which was requesting the screens(had large rips) to be fixed on several windows so that we would be able to open the windows without the issue of pests coming in...that problem was NEVER fixed and was completely ignored by Mr. Russel and his staff. Also, in the main bathroom, there was / is a black mold issue due to no ventilation with an inoperable window that we were told was being replaced, which didn't happen until about a month before the end of our lease. When we inquired about it, we were consistently given some excuse as to why this wasn't being addressed. Mold was wiped down with bleach water by what seemed to be some random person that the Property Manager hired (not professional) and left at that. Needless to say that does NOT take care of black mold. The mold was still there when we moved out. I could go on further and give numerous issues with renting/buying from this business, but I have better things to do. My hope is to steer people away from using this company so to ensure that others will not endure what we did. On one last note, we have since moved out, (it's been 41 days) and Mr. Russel has yet to return our deposit of $1795 which we were told had been mailed to my husband's work address and it has NOT been received and when I called Mr. Russel to ask for a new check to be re-issued, he told the lady at the front desk to inform us that he would need to charge US a stop payment fee on the first check (which I doubt was actually sent) in order to re-issue the check and mail to our new address. BAD BAD BAD business practices going on here...DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. read more
