I wound up here after a knee injury sent me to Beverly Hospital. I didnt have a pcp at the time so I had to go with the beverly hospital network of ortho's since i needed and ortho doc immediately and didnt have time to find a pcp to get a referral to a better practice first, tho had i known what a disgustingly and dangerously careless practice coastal orthopedics is, i would have waited out the pain to go thru a pcp first. The point of this review is this: Dr. Zimmer should have his license to practice medicine taken away!!! i wouldnt trust this arrogant asshat to fix a teddy bear. first he diagnosed MY TORN POSTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT as a KNEE SPRAIN. a fucking knee sprain?!?!? I WAS DISCRIMINATED AGAINST based on my appearance and health history. at the time i was still recovering from a miscarriage that almost killed me, also thanks to the shitty fucking beverly hospital health network, so when i came in for my knee injury, i was anemic, with high blood pressure, overweight, and a very short hair cut. Dr Zimmer was EXTREMELY DISMISSIVE OF ANYTHING I HAD TO SAY. he completely disregarded my symptoms, both stated and apparent. he subscribed me NO PAIN MEDS, an anti-inflammatory that is CONTRAINDICATED for high blood pressure, and DR ZIMMER TOLD ME TO ICE INJURY "AROUND THE CLOCK." every physical therapist i know will tell you that doing that will CAUSE MORE INJURY AND DAMAGE TO TISSUE. Dr Zimmer STOLE TWO AND A HALF YEARS OF MY LIFE BECAUSE HE REFUSED TO LISTEN AND PROPERLY DIAGNOSE MY INJURY. I had to BEG for a prescription for physical therapy THREE TIMES. DR ZIMMER REFUSED TO WRITE ME THIS PRESCRIPTION FOR THREE MONTHS BECAUSE HE DIDNT BELIEVE I WAS "THAT INJURED" (HIS WORDS!). it took reinjuring myself a year later to finally get the medical treatment i needed with the folks over at mgh outpatient care on endicott in danvers, a a very fine and intelligent bunch of folks there. Anyways, I HOPE DR ZIMMER RETIRES BEFORE HE IS PUT IN JAIL. I also hopes he breaks every joint in his body and never gets the treatment he needs, instead having people tell him "oh you will be skipping and jumping around in a week!" which is EXACTLY what he told me when i came in to his office, unable to walk, my injured knee swollen three times the size of my uninjured knee, in extraordinary pain. i hope you rot dr zimmer, i hope things much worse than that, but it would be inappropriate to write it here. so, fuck you, dr zimmer, fuck you in your face with a ten foot dildo. read more

I usually do not make reviews about Doctors and historically have reviewed only restaurants and certain small business (garages, convenience stores, etc). With that said, I was so impressed with the service at Coastal Orthopedic that not only am I taking time to boast about them I will NEVER go anywhere else again!! Customer Service & Doctors' offices are not commonly used in the same sentence so imagine my shock when I arrived at their Gloucester office. I was greeted by a beautiful smile & friendly hello. Jessica was the young lady greeting me and she was a sweetheart. She had recalled talking to me on the telephone a couple days prior and not only remembered that I am from Danvers but, she even recalled that I had hurt my right wrist. I did not wait long, maybe 5 minutes. Then, instead of screaming out my name, Jessica appeared before me and let me know that the room was ready. Jessica is, in a word, MAGNIFICENT. Admittedly, I was impressed with Coastal already but, when I let the physician I was floored. Dr. Waugh was my physician and (unlike many other Doctors) he was friendly and spent an amazing amount of time with me. Dr. Waugh was AMAZING!! He reviewed my X-ray thoroughly and took the time to explain my injury and go over-in detail-my options. He never pushed or tried to sell me on anything. To the contrary, he was sure to point Out the "pros & cons" of each available procedure AS WELL AS the pros and cons of avoiding procedures altogether!! When I left the office I looked at my phone and realized he had been with me for an hour and five minutes!! I can not recommend Coastal Orthopedic enough and I hope that Jessica and Dr. Waugh read this review and know how thankful & impressed I am! read more

I saw Dr. Steven Hollis to get advice on whether my knee injured in a fall would recover on its own. His manner and advice were excellent. He examined x-rays taken previously at the nearby hospital of the knee and a toe fracture. I knew from previous toe fractures that no surgery or treatment could be done or was necessary. I did not raise any question about treatment of the toe, but he examined at it as well as the knee. He said the knee would not need surgery, & gave me a prescription for physical therapy. The knee & toe are recovering well. But I was shocked today to get a bill for "Closed treatment of fracture great toe" in addition to the office visit (which I had paid for already on the day of the visit). My insurance treated the "additional" service as "surgery" due to the coding by the doctor. They could not change anything. The billing dept. of Coastal Orthopedics agreed that there was no "surgery" but asserted that discussion with a surgical doctor could be construed as "treatment". According to that person, how the insurance treated the coding of the service was up to the insurance provider (Blue Cross). So, no recourse other than to complain here & elsewhere. Careful if you talk to or get examined by a surgical doctor -- it could be surgery and billed as such!! 10-18-17 Update. After making a complaint to the Better Business Bureau I received a copy of the response by Coastal Orthopedics to the BBB that the additional charge for "treatment" will be removed. Thus, I am pleased with the outcome & remain pleased with the manner & expertise of Dr. Hollis. read more

On February 15, 2021 I slipped on some black ice while walking out my front door. My right leg went under my left leg and then I was able to get up with the help of a pizza delivery boy. I went to walk in my house and once my foot hit the threshold my left leg went under my right leg and I could not move my legs after that. That is when I first met Dr. Edward Schleyer at Beverly Hospital. He explained to me the damage I had done to my legs (tore both tendons, fractured my right ankle in three places) On February 20 he operated on both legs and my foot along with another surgeon, because he did not want to make it three separate surgeries and apply anesthesia to me three separate times. After the operation he talked with me and said everything went smooth and he reassured me that I would be on the road to recovery. On February 2, 2022 I had my last visit with Dr. Schleyer at Coastal Orthopedic in Beverly. The doctor took my hardware out of my ankle and stitched me up, since that day I have been feeling and doing great. During my time with coastal orthopedic I feel that everyone there is up and beyond professional, from the receptionist to the billing department to all of Dr Schleyer's assistance team (they helped me a lot) and even people that have nothing to do with what was going on with me we're extremely courteous friendly. Not that I want anything like this to happen to me again, but if I am ever in need of anything foot or leg related I will always go to coastal orthopedic. Dr. Mastrangelo and her assistant are terrific! A couple of months ago I had an infected big toe and had a different podiatrist remove the nail asking me to see him in a few days. Then he canceled the appointment! Fortunately, Cape Ann Medical Center was able to arrange for me to see Dr. Mastrangelo on incredibly short notice. She found residual infection and dealt with it immediately. Much more than that, she gave me all the information that I needed to feel at ease, to understand what I should expect (and what to look for if there was any issue), and she and her assistant quickly scheduled a follow-up. On top of that both the Dr. and her assistant are very personable - a nontrivial trait. Yesterday I thought I had some residual issues with that big toe and a worry about the other one - within minutes I had an appointment scheduled with today, was met with what I now see as the great efficiency of this team, and had a very informative and reassuring exam with Dr. Mastrangelo. Again, her explanations were clear and left me understanding what was happening with my toes (all good!) and what to look for and what any future intervention might be if anything developed. Her upbeat manner, in addition to her clear proficiency and ability to explain things, is a real plus. I recommend her enthusiastically and without reservation. read more

Dr Ghandi & staff at Coast Orthopedic were so good! I highly recommend them! After misstepping (rather leaping) while dancing, I landed wrong (toes bent underneath the ball of my foot) breaking two bones. ER nurse was impressed with the breaks then I followed up visiting with Dr Ghandi. I was shocked hearing the recommendation was surgery. One of the breaks was a Jones break (I'm not one to "keep up with the Jones's" but I guess my toe tries to!) He was kind, patient explaining it all to me and allowed me the time to process the information without rushing me into having the surgery (even though it was a time sensitive treatment). Scheduling appointments and the staff that worked with me each appointment for x-rays etc were so nice and friendly. The Danvers office is where I would go for my follow-up appts. which always ran on time - it was during covid times, i.e. August 2020. Surgery went great - I'm so grateful. Dr Ghandi had an excellent bedside manner through the whole process. I coach figure skating so having my feet in good working order is a must! He did an excellent job! Thanks to Dr Ghandi and the wonderful staff (and rehab at Sports Rehab Unlimited with Matt Penney) I'm back as good as new! read more

Dr. Mastrangelo was and is amazing. It is extremely rare to find a doctor who wants to know the person and not just see a number. She wanted to fix my injury within my lifestyle. I did not want to go to the doctor for a sore ankle but after convincing and a recommendation from my PCP I went. She was amazing she treats her patients like people not just numbers and she makes you feel 100 % comfortable that she knows you as a person and what will work for you. My sore ankle ended up in surgery but despite 18 weeks of boots and casts she was amazing. She never told me generic side effects but rather everything she said to expect was exactly how it happened so I was never concerned or wondering if I did something wrong. Her bedside manner is second to none including personally calling me at home more than once to follow up after surgery. I have seen many doctors and had many operations and none are as good as she is. As an added bonus the rest of the staff is amazing from the front office to my casting buddy. That is rare. Often you are able to find a great doctor but the support staff is tough. This is not the case here they are all great. read more

I have been under the care of Dr. Waugh at Coastal Orthopedics now since May of 2018 for a non-union scaphoid injury from 18 years ago. first of all, the nature of this injury and surgery would turn most surgeons and orthopedic practitioners away; however, Dr. Waugh came highly recommended for this particular injury and care, and now I certainly know why. Dr. Waugh has been thorough, thoughtful and attentive to all my needs, concerns, and healing. I needed surgery to repair the fracture, and I have never felt like I have been in better hands. While I'm still in ongoing care for this injury, the delicate nature of this particular repair wouldn't send me anywhere else except for Coastal Orthopedics with Dr. Waugh. I'm so fortunate to be in his care. Furthermore, the staff are unbelievably friendly as also attentive and pleasant. Michael has been doing my casting and is always humorous and well mannered. He makes casting fun. And, I must also give a shout out to Jessica at the front desk, who always greats myself and other patients with a smile and a big hello. Where do I begin... We have been using Coastal for our family for years. My son broke his Tibia while playing football and Dr Schleyer was amazing. He was back at it the following year and shine on the field. My daughter last summer sprained her Ankle pretty bad and Dr Mastrangelo was beyond kind and reassuring that She would be playing Volleyball her senior year in which she did. Recently I myself has had issues with my knee and Dr Hollis went above and beyond to see that I got an MRI in which detected a tear in my Meniscus. Instead of trying to treat something out of his realm he referred me to Dr Schleyer who has a great deal of expertise in the field of root meniscus surgery. He was amazing in every way! Was very honest without any pressure taking time to explain everything and answer my question. HIGHLY recommended! The front office staff have been amazing. Dr Ghandi was amazing! From the first visit, it was a shock to hear that a "simple" toe break needed surgery. He discussed what my options were. It was presented in a way where I was knowledgeable about each and made my decision quickly to go forward with surgery. Time was essential with my injury. I joked having a doctor named Ghandi in the operating room, I must be in good hands. I joked but it is so true! I was in for surgery less than 2 weeks - this was the end of summer 2020 so no easy feat to get me in quick I'm sure! My livelihood requires being physical so I needed treatment to be quick & recovery back to my best. His bedside manner was both comforting and encouraging. Post-surgery appts, he was great about keeping me on a realistic path (I'm a bit impatient) to get back to my best. Hindsight, I was extremely lucky to have seen Dr Ghandi that he prioritized what was needed in a time pressure injury. I highly recommend Dr Ghandi! read more

This practice was recommended by my PCP. I had ruptured one of the tendons in my right hand so I didn't have the full range of motion of my thumb. Dr. Paly did a tendon transfer so now I have the full ROM with no complications and quick healing. This year, Dr. Hollis has replaced both my hips, one by one. The first one healed pretty quickly and became my good leg. I'm three weeks after my second replacement. I can tell the muscles and tissue around the new joint are healing because I can already do more and get around with just a crutch. This incision has not healed as quickly but Dr. Hollis has redressed it himself several times and now it's good to go. I also want to compliment the staff for being courteous and attentive, especially the Nurse Practitioners (Gail!) who have been full of information, excellent advice, and great tips. Thank you all. I've seen Dr. Gandhi for 5+ years now for various ailments and I've never felt more taken care of. He is respectful, informative, and makes me feel like he actually cares. He never rushes me through appointments, even if he may be running behind, but rather will take the time to answer all of my questions and make sure that I know my options. I saw a different doctor prior to seeing Dr. Gandhi who I felt like never remembered me and always wanted to push me out the door before answering my questions. I've never felt that way with Dr. Gandhi. Even when I have questioned prior work done (by a different doctor that he was now helping me with) he sensed my trepidation and consulted with some colleagues of his in Boston on my behalf to assure me that I was going to be taken care of. I'll always recommend this practice, and especially Dr. Gandhi, to anyone who needs knee or shoulder help. read more

This practice is AMAZING! Dr. Mastrangelo did my Lapiplasty-Bunionectomy. .She is super upbeat and friendly. She's a very caring doctor. She is very engaging. She actually told me straight up that she won't do my left one until my right one is 100%. (hopefully all works out well so I can have it done in the new year.) As for Michael Muldoon my physical therapist at Coastal... He's the Best! I looked forward to my sessions with him. He was patient and kind. I am a very, very happy patient of COA! I have had three surgical procedures by four (4) different COA surgeons; two knee, one shoulder and one hand. Prior to each surgery I was given all of the information that I needed and or asked for with regard to my procedure. I always have post surgery questions and I never have to wait long for a return call and am always given answers in such a way that I can understand them. Each surgery was a success and I have never had issues following my PT and recovery. Additionaly, my two daughters are very high level athletes and both have recieved treatment and consultation from COA over the years. They too recieved professional service and amazing care. Three years ago I fell on black ice, a spectacular fall that left me with foot-drop. A senior, I had never been to a podiatrist and made an appointment with a local dr. (not in the Coastal Assoc. group). He was older, and very discouraging, saying "I'm afraid I can't do anything for you." I left his office feeling depressed and with little hope. Eventually I found out about podiatrist Dr. Mastrangelo, and made an appointment. She was the complete opposite: young, upbeat, and encouraging. The clinic's brace technician, Brian, was really helpful, fitting me for a "minimal" brace that, thanks to him, Medicare covered (!) I'm so glad that I didn't stop my search after seeing the original podiatrist. I've told many people about Dr. Mastrangelo, and they are all very pleased. My first visit and experience was yesterday with Coastal Orthopedics. From the start of me calling as I was about 5 minutes late and needed to know what building they were in was great. When I walked in the front desk person was wonderful and not upset or rude that I was late with some offices you can experience that. I saw Dr. Jaipal Gaandhi. He was fabulous. Very kind and caring and thorough with looking and treating my shoulder issue. He had xrays done to rule out a couple of things and after talking opted for a cordizone injection before leaving. It was fairly painless and I felt some relieve of the sharp pain immeadiately. Dr. Gaandhi never made me feel rushed and took all the time I needed for questions. Dr. Schleyer literally changed my life. I was injured in 1993 in a hoyer lift accident when I caught a patient as the lift broke. Holding 186 pounds of dead weight during a seizure, I destroyed 4 discs in my neck and lived in chronic pain for the next 28 years. On my first visit to Dr. Schleyer, he told me one of my persistent symptoms was classic for cervical nerve impingement. Long story short, after an MRI showed spinal cord compression with signal changes I wound up in surgery and I now have two new MobiC artificial discs at C4/5 and C5/6 thanks to Dr. Ozuna. I am now pain free much of the time with excellent mobility in my neck. I never would have had that excellent surgery if Dr. Schleyer had not diagnosed the problem correctly and alerted my primary care physician. I am so grateful I can't even tell you. read more
