***EPIC REVIEW*** After seeing my eye doctor, Dr. Jeff, every six months, for over two years, I was so excited when I was told it's time for cataract removal surgery!. Dr. Jeff, referred me to Coastal Vision, where I was scheduled to visit with Dr. Amir Marvasti. After going through all the preliminary exams, I finally met Dr. Marvasti. He walked in, shook my hand and proceeded with the exam. Questions were asked about my hobbies and general day to day activities. Also, he asked me if I wanted to see distance or close up, which we discussed in detail. No question was too much. After my exam, surgeries were schedule by Miriam Ochoa, who explained next steps in great detail. Both surgeries were fast and recovery was easy, except for the eye-drop regimen . The office staff was always professional and they explained every test they had to complete. Today, I returned for my final visit. Dr. Marvasti walked in, pleasant with a smile and asked how I was doing. Which first thing out of my mouth was "thank you!" I explained that I now see one moon, instead of two, and I can now drive with ease!!! I shed a few "happy tears"!. We complete the exam, and I gave him a big hug to show my appreciation. The place was like an airport ( LAX). It was so busy in the lobby that I thought I might be at a Starbucks. My eye exam with Dr. Betsy Nguyen was remarkably negative. She came into the examining room and barely made "eye contact" with me (no pun intended). She was no nonsense and seemed to want to skip any "small talk" and simply take care of "business." She had no patience for my being uncomfortable and actually gave me an insult about not being able to keep my eyes open because of my "anxiety." I've never experienced a doctor who seemed so completely void of any semblance of good "bed side manners." The doctor seemed in a hurry to dismiss me and get to her next patients. The entire visit with her was approximately 10 minutes with her demonstrating the correct technique in applying eye drops. read more

The team is super professional but also down-to-earth, answering all my questions like pros without making me feel like I was asking a million of them. As long as you follow pre and post-op instructions, you will not regret getting corrective eye surgery done. I am 3 weeks post-op and I have never seen life as clear as I can now. No pain during and after the procedure. Only had dry eyes for about a week but that went away with daily eye drops provided by the clinic. I wanted to share some honest feedback about my recent visit. I truly wish I could give your office a glowing review, but unfortunately my experience left me feeling that payment is prioritized over patient care. I understand that collecting payment is part of the process, and I have no issue with that. However, this is not the first time I've arrived early for my appointment, been taken back quickly, and then left waiting an unreasonable amount of time in the exam room. During my most recent visit, I waited over 45 minutes without seeing the doctor. A nurse briefly stepped in to say the doctor would be in "a few minutes," but no one ever came. I eventually had to leave for another appointment. I notified the front desk before walking out, but the entire experience was extremely frustrating--especially considering your office is a 45‑minute drive from my home. In total, nearly two hours of my day were wasted. Given that no services were provided, I believe I should receive a refund for this visit. I'm curious to see whether I'll receive a follow‑up call about this issue with the same consistency that I'm contacted when there is a balance on my account. Today 6/6/25, I am incredibly thankful for all the staff and Dr. Tran who perform PRK to me, it was an amazing experience. Looking forward for brighter days. whooohoo!! At consult, Dr. Lee takes the time to explain the various procedures (pros, cons) and which one(s) he recommends. I felt very comfortable getting SMILE throughout the process. What a HORRIFIC experience. PLEASE READ THE REVIEWS ABOUT PATIENT EXPERIENCES BEFORE MAKING AN APPOINTMENT. Yes, you will have to wait over 30 minutes after your appointment time just to be seen. Yes, you will have to go to the main reception to remind them that you have been waiting too. Peior to me going up the receptionist and letting her know how long i had been waiting, 2 other people who were waiting prior to me had to ask the same thing about his much longer they had to wait. The fancy building allure is just that. This company just wants to sell you the most expensive out of pocket expenses instead of discussing what your insurance covers which wouldn't be out of cost. Dr. Marvasi began my " consultation"with discussing the $6000 cataract out of pocket most expensive option as his recommendation for my surgery instead of discussing the insurance option which was already covered. This was prefaced with another 15 MInute wait just for him to come into the exam room. Another wait. The visit with him felt short, rushed and like he was trying to sell me a product ( more expensive and out of pocket option) instead of going over all my options. Followed by his very brief visit, I was then led to another room where a patient staff was there to go over costs. At this point, I had been in the office for almost 2 hours and you would think that they would have run my insurance to give me most exact amounts for the costs of my cataract surgery.NOPE! The staff person pushed 2 bills in front of me, showing the full cost, without insurance that I would be paying, both the $6000 out of pocket, non insurance covered option and the regular option. None of the amounts that I was showed reflected my insurance coverage. Was told that someone from their office would be contacting me about what the amounts would be with my insurance coverage. After this, I waited 1 week and still hasn't heard anything from the office. Decided to call them. Had to speak with the office manager who then has to pass the message asking to the insurance department. At this point I already decided that Coastal Vision was terrible with their processes, lack of patient customer service and ability to articulate information to the patient with correct information. Why would I trust their doctor doing surgery on my eye and they could even run my insurance to tell me what my costs would be??? After 1 month received a bill from them. Called the billing department who couldn't explain exactly what the information for tests done ( that they charged me for)was or provide other information and shared that someone from insurance department would need to explain it to me. Ended up going to UCI Orange Gavin Herbert Eye Institute in Orange and had such a WONDERFUL experience from the moment I got there to the insurance explanation and costs, the doctor explained everything extremely well,, answered my questions, reviewed all options for my surgery without trying to sell me like Dr. Marvasii did. My insurance covered the entire cost of everything, and UCI did the same testing/doctors visit and they didn't send me an additional $85 bill like Coasta Vision did. *UPDATE* This is in no way about the LASIK procedure I received or the doctors present. This is about the administrative staff who manage the scheduling. Several times, I have had my schedule mixed up and had to have corrected. I've been told I didn't have an appointment when I did and then scheduled for one time then told there was another. It's been an absolute mess. When I complained, it was suggested that I made the mistake about what my appointment time was. UH NO. It was suggested that I made this mistake when I was calling in to discuss an appointment that was scheduled, but apparently wasn't on their calendar. So honestly, who has the bad track record here. Blaming the patient for getting it wrong? Come on. It would have been much more appreciated if they just owned up to their mistake. It really feels like they're so good about getting you in for LASIK, but couldn't care less after your procedure is done. I plan to do any follow ups with my optometrist moving forward. I recommend if you come to this location, to have the staff write you an appointment card because they WILL switch up on you and then make it your fault. read more

This review is about Dr. Nguyen's attitude and treatment of my mother following an improperly executed cataract procedure. Dr. Nguyen successfully performed my mother's right cataract surgery this past summer, but at the followup appointment for the left eye she informed my mother that the laser had missed a piece of tissue. The quote was "The laser didn't catch it neither did I." My mother was very concerned, and she returned home and explained to me that, based on Dr. Nguyen's description of the issue, part of the cataract had been left behind. She called back to speak to Dr. Nguyen and ask some follow up questions, and Dr Nguyen was very impatient with my mother, snapping at her, "Nothing was left behind, you are worrying for nothing, I will let you know when you should worry." She then explained that the cataract is like an M&M, and that the laser missed a piece of the "shell" not the cataract itself. The result of this was the new lens shifted and was no longer sitting in its correct position, resulting in my mother's vision being compromised, causing severe double vision, blurring, floaters, flashes of light, and halos to occur. The lens was also unstable and could very possibly continue to shift, meaning her vision could continue to worsen over time. At this point I went to my mother's house to call Dr. Nguyen together so I could ask some questions about what to do next. This next part is really what I am basing most of this review upon. Dr. Nguyen did call us back, and on speakerphone where I heard every bit of this conversation, she proceeded to put the fear of god into my mother about ever fixing this problem. She explained that any corrective procedure would most likely damage the retina and cause severe long term issues with my mother's vision. Several times she referred to my mother's "anxiety" and "excessive worrying". (Incidentally, my mother was perfectly calm on this phone call). Dr. Nguyen NEVER once offered anything remotely like an apology or sympathy for this situation. She then launched into a whole personal account of a tragic circumstance that happened to herself when she was young, and how she used it to capitalize and make herself a better person, so my mother should use this situation to see the positive and better her life from it (at this point I could tell Dr. Nguyen was grasping at straws to try and say ANYTHING to spin this in a better light, which felt very self-serving and not at all for my mother's comfort). Telling a 70 year old woman that sometimes bad things happen in life felt patronizing and awkward to all of us listening. My mother then answered that she has survived cancer twice, so she understands all of that. Dr Nguyen then said exactly this: "Well if you keep going like this you're definitely going to give yourself cancer again, because it's well documented that stress is the leading causes of cancer, so you don't want to do that to yourself again." At this point I cut her off, interrupting her to say "Ok we don't need to talk about cancer let's please stick to the topic at hand." I will never forget the look on my mother's face hearing her eye surgeon say that being concerned about her botched cataract surgery was going to cause cancer, and that it would be her own fault. No apologies, just, 'you're going to give yourself cancer.' I was absolutely appalled and instantly did not want my mother ever going back to this doctor with ZERO people skills. Flash forward several months, we were fortunate enough to find Dr. Kline who referred us to Dr Matthew Wade, who was able to perform the corrective procedure that Dr. Nguyen said just could not be done. Dr. Wade did a wonderful job assuring my mother that this was absolutely fixable. Also it turns out none of the shell was left behind, part of the capsular bag was torn and damaged during the initial procedure. THAT'S what resulted in the lens unseating itself, so we don't even understand where the bogus explanation came from that anything was left behind at all. My mother's vision is now on the mend thanks to the incredible doctors we saw once we left Coastal Vision and never looked back. The mental toll this whole ordeal took on her cannot be overstated, and trusting the assurances of the doctors who promised to fix it after Dr. Nguyen so adamantly stressed it could not be fixed and then shamed her for her fear was very challenging for our entire family. I am so grateful to the doctors that made it right. Shame on Dr. Nguyen for how she spoke to my mother in the aftermath of this ordeal. I would think that implying a patient could give herself cancer over concern for a mistake YOU made would be a common sense avoid for anyone in the medical profession, or really, anyone with a heart. read more

Dr. Betsy Nguyen performed cataract surgery on my left eye on August 1, 2024 and the results were terrible. It left me with double vision, glares and blurring. She gave vague explanations for what had happened and admonished me for worrying. In a phone call on speaker, that my whole family clearly heard, Dr. Nguyen told me to stop worrying or I would get cancer. When I told her that I had had cancer twice, she said, "Well, you'll get it again." She also told me I should learn to live with the results because it was too risky to repair the eye. I never went back to her. When I went to another ophthalmologist, Dr. Daniel Kline, he informed me that the capsular bag which holds the lens had been torn and the the lens was shifting and could move more. I finally knew what had happened to my eye. Dr. Kline referred me to a magnificent doctor at UC Irvine, Dr. Matthew Wade, who operated on my left eye and gave me back normal vision. My experience with Dr. Betsy Nguyen was absolutely horrible. read more

Bottom line: Coastal Vision Medical is a great company to do your LASIK with. Everything from their facilities and technology to their staff is beyond exceptional. I would gladly work with them again. I called the office to schedule a consultation (free) at their Irvine office (there is also one in Orange - this is also the current surgery center) and spoke to Sandy who was very helpful, personable and knowledgeable. Paperwork and a questionnaire was emailed to me the next day.. I like much more than sitting in the office and filling it out. The day of the consultation I arrived to the office and I was seen almost immediately. The office was very clean and modern, the receptionist was really sweet as well. A technician ran various eye exams to determine whether or not I was a good candidate. I then met an OD who confirmed I was a good candidate.. she went over different types of surgery and answered all my questions. I met with the tech again who went over pricing, scheduling, and pre-op information. I was not pressured at all but I already knew I was going to move forward so I scheduled my surgery for exactly one week later! The day of surgery (10/22) was very easy going. I went to the Orange office and again I was immediately pulled back. I paid and signed consent forms then the OD checked my eyes one more time to make sure I was ok for surgery. I met the surgeon (Dr. Marvasti) beforehand.. he is very polite, reassuring, and knowledgeable about LASIK and eye health. There is a relaxation room they have you wind down in before going into the surgery room (also to let the meds kick in). Once in the surgery room, I was met by my surgeon again and we got started! The surgery itself was very easy! The best I could describe it was like someone putting their thumb over your eye... just some pressure. Your eyes are numb and you still feel the blinking sensation so it's completely comfortable. Plus the procedure is only about 15 minutes! Afterwards, I slept all day (doctor's orders)! The next day I had 20/15 vision (that's better than 20/20!!) and was able to work and drive. No more glasses/contacts for me!!! I am soooo glad I went through with it!!!! I recently had Lasik done by Dr Amir Marvasti at Coastal Vision and I'm extremely satisfied so far with my results and experience with their team. From my first appointment at the office, I felt comfortable and at ease with my decision. I got to meet Dr Marvasti at my consult visit and that made the choice for me between two providers I was looking at bc it showed me he cared about his patients. The care and dedication from his team is exceptional and Sandy was great! During the procedure the doctor talked me through it and kept me at ease with his voice. sent here on suspicion of glaucoma . Each time they had patient use little machine from the 70s resembling an arcade game wherein one must press a button whenever one senses dots appearing . Patient gets charged for this. No definitive conclusion is able to be drawn from results of this machine game so they have patient return periodically to redo the dots game machine . Furthermore Dr betsy Nguyen has rough bedside manners . She without warning grabbed and yanked patient's head to a much lower angle to examine patient . No smile . Won't be coming back . I was referred here my optometrist, they are VERY over priced. Friendly staff and nice office, followed up with me and made several attempts to get me back in, I confronted them about costing $1,100 more than competitors in the area. Once I messaged them back telling them their pricing was too much and I was going to get my lasik (SAME EXACT PROCEDURE) done with a different doctor they just dropped me like a hot potato. Do your home work, look around and find a better deal, read all the reviews too. I found an amazing local doctor. I paid $2,900 for the same surgery they were trying to charge me $4,000 for... Lasik, such a scary thought and procedure to think about doing. My optometrist, Dr. Le from Horizon optometry highly recommended coming to coastal vision and seeing Dr. Tran. Dr. Tran has a very impressive resume. He's very patient and seems very nice. He's one of the pioneers that first started doing lasik and PRK. He also does cataract surgery as well. Facility is pretty new and everything is in great condition. They accept care credit so you don't have to worry about Paying the whole lump sum all at once. LOVED: Staff here are all super nice and friendly. they seem to really love their jobs because i always see a smile on their face and they are super approachable. i felt a lot of support the day of the surgery. staff was in the viewing room narrating my procedure to my bf so he would know exactly what they were doing to me. Dr. Tran makes sure that your prescription is on point before he does the surgery. i even got called out of the room when i was laying down getting ready for my procedure because they wanted to make sure my left eye prescription matched my optometrist. so you'll be in good hands if you come here. Angel, the patient counselor is so NICE! she has a very friendly and warm personality. she explains everything and takes her time to answer all questions that one may have. trust me, my gf and i both had tons of questions. they were very accommodating. my gf and i wanted to do the procedure together and ask questions at the same time [consultation] and they allowed us to be inseparable. of course my gf did her surgery first because i wasn't as brave to go first but they offered me the chance to watch her procedure which i said no thanks because i was chicken and had to do my procedure a few minutes after hers. i would highly recommend coastal vision! my vision is still adjusting since i've only done my procedure less than a week but i felt like i was in such good hands and well taken care of. 2 thumbs up! 5 stars all around! tips: *The waiting room does get pretty full. *Private parking lot. *Free candy in the candy jar at the check in counter. *There's a tv in the lobby. *One restroom shared by both gender.
