After nearly 20 years, I felt compelled to share my experience with Dr. Tooma and the LASIK procedure I had through his practice. Before moving forward with surgery, I spent a significant amount of time researching surgeons to ensure I was making the best possible decision. I am so incredibly happy I came to Dr. Tooma! I've always wanted to get LASIK but would get anxious of the thought of having my eye cut! Last year my optometrist gave me reassurance and highly recommended for me to make a consultation with NVision. AMAZING experience. Had the pleasure of working with Stephanie. She has a great personality and provided 5 star customer service by way of texting/email/phone calls. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Tooma and his family roughly twenty-five years ago when our children attended elementary school together. I quickly came to know him as kind, generous and caring. I did not realize at the time that he was already a highly-regarded Loma-Linda University trained eye surgeon. While attending graduate school, my eyes went from "perfect" to severely near-sighted. At 40, my correction was -8.50, meaning, I could barely see my hand in front of my face. When I began researching the possibility of eye surgery in 1996, I learned from independent sources that my friend Dr. Tooma was indeed considered a top-tier surgeon with substantial experience in corneal transplants, cataract lens replacements and in the emerging field LASIK techniques. Based on my own independent research of Dr. Tooma's qualifications along with my personal relationship with him, I decided I could trust him with my eyes and asked him to perform LASIK on me. That was back in 1997, just as LASIK was becoming available. As every other LASIK patient has since shared with me, my result had a profound effect on me. I went from what I consider as "functionally blind" to "sight fully restored" within one day and then to 20/15 within a week or so. The procedure lasted only a few minutes. It consisted of applying numbing and "anti-blink" drops, prepping and draping each eye. Retractors hold each eyelid open while the laser creates a thin "flap" that is held back while the laser painlessly re-sculpts the cornea. It was fast and painless. Was I scared? Yes I was. But Dr. Tooma is a pro; he let me know what to expect and talked me calmly through each step. I also knew that Dr. Tooma equipped his office with state-of-the-art testing, optical and laser equipment and that my vision had been carefully evaluated several times, checked and cross-checked before the procedure. For years afterward, I had to remind myself that I no longer needed to reach for my glasses; that I can throw away my contact lens supplies and that I can open my eyes in the ocean. Full sight affected my ability to read, enjoy TV, movies, theater, sports, family life and even avoid fatigue I previously experienced from straining to focus. That is why LASIK patients will tell you their results are profound. Dr. Tooma told me in 1997 that eventually I would experience cataracts and loss of clear vision when I read due to normal aging. Indeed, I began using reading glasses about 5 years ago and my distance vision began deteriorating last year. When a local optometrist failed to properly diagnose my issues, I visited Dr. Tooma and learned about the cataracts. After Dr. Tooma corrected my cataracts and a performed a "touch-up" LASIK, my distance vision is as good as ever. I still use minor correction for reading, but otherwise, I am back to 20/15 and I am again in disbelief that my vision is so good. But enough about Dr. Tooma. This time, while scheduling and preparing for my cataract and LASIK surgeries, I encouraged my lovely bride, Cheryl, to consider LASIK for her nearsightedness. Cheryl, who is a registered nurse, was impressed with Dr. Tooma, the eye center, the equipment and the medical professionalism displayed throughout. She underwent her surgery before mine and is also enjoying her new vision. During the process, Cheryl and I spent considerable time at the NVISION Newport Beach Eye Center and became quite fond of all of the doctors, technicians, advisors and support staff. My LASIK surgery with Doctor Tom Tooma at NVISION Newport Beach location was very successful. I was able to see right after the surgery and recognized my husband waiting for me at the lobby. I said Hi Honey! I am truly amaze! I remember my first word was "Wow this is so cool" with my happiness. I saw Dr Tooma smiled and gave him a slight hugged/handshake. (Before the surgery I was struggling with my vision because I can hardly see. My distance was at 475 and my reading was 175). I did not feel any pain. I heard Dr. Tooma voice as he kept me informed the steps he is performing and what to expect like seeing the blue light, will get dark and how much time left. I feel so bless and thankful for the work and help he can do. His team of staff to me are well trained, systematically organize, great customer service. They manage time and procedure well. I first review their website to get an idea of the procedure and cost. Check reviews and compared other choices. I made the call, got the appointment I preferred and an email was sent to me right after I hang up. In this email were forms I can answer their questions ahead of time. I like that system because I read and answer on my own schedule instead of reading and filling it out in a lobby day of appointment. I met my counselor, Apollo and my eyes were checked for candidacy. He was very nice and professional. He called and gathered the rest with my Optometry. Gave me his direct number I can text or call. He text me to checked and confirmed I did my pre-op. All of team members explained verbally, the instructions were simple, clear to understand and follow. Then there is an iPad video for visual. Then there is an organized folder pamphlet. I find it convenient I had the option to buy what I need from them (drops and vitamins). They give you a kit (sunglass, eye protection) after the surgery and in it was repeat copy sheet of the post-op instructions. I slept it off. Now (less than a week), I find it easier and comfortable to do my daily activities and do my work. I then called their Corp Office after my surgery if I can buy my vitamins from them. I saw them available online (local store did not have them). However I prefer I pick up than delivered when it comes to medicines. A little late for a review but I had PRK done around May 2015. Fast forward to 2022 and I'm still seeing 20/20 with no issues. I'd recommend Dr. Tooma to anyone that is considering PRK or LASIK. Without Dr. Tooma and the NVISION team, I would never have become a pilot. I was turned down by the Army due to my poor eyesight, was told by the recruiter I would never be a pilot and should consider a different career path. Well, here I am. I still have perfect vision, no issues, and am flying! Dr. Tooma and the team were great in the whole process from the consultation, explaining what medications were needed, what PRK consisted of, how it was going to be done, and also explained what I needed to do during my recovery. I could not be happier up to this point. Shawna has done an excellent job at my pre surgical care. Taking care of all the loose ends and making sure I was ready for surgery. This is a very late comment. I had lasik done by Dr Tooma about 8 yrs ago. I have been very happy with the result ever since. My eyes are still doing well and no dryness or blurry whatsoever!!. Reflecting of that time when I first going there (office in Fullerton), receptionist and the other doctor who checked my eyes all were professional and thorough!! Dr Tooma performed great on mono vision as my vision of seeing far and near are seamless as I don't feel like I have to adjust my eyes. I had the pleasure of working with Apollo, Such a charismatic loving person! I came in for a consultation just to check it out but Apollo's ambiance is so down to earth very calming yet assertive. I came out of there with a date for Lasik surgery two week out! Throughout those two weeks any question/concern that came to mind was answered with patience and most importantly honesty. I was scared to open my eyes the very next morning but i had the greatest experience ever realizing i could freaking see EVERYTHING!!! My prescription was at -8.00 with a cylinder of -2.50 (pretty high up there) The next day after the procedure i'm reading 20/20. This review is from my wife, Catherine... It's now been almost two months since my LASIK surgery - and I LOVE It!! I'm so grateful to Dr. Tooma and his entire team. They are professional, caring, and efficient. They listen to all your concerns and keep it real. If possible, they will accommodate to your requests and do what they can to make it work for you. In fact, I went to a different surgeon first (I had not heard about NVISION yet) and they disqualified me from LASIK due to lack of enough thickness of my cornea. They said I was not a candidate for LASIK and that I had to go the PRK route, which was very disappointing. Then I came to NVISION, the team took many measurements and calculations, and Dr. Tooma told me he was confident he could do LASIK because of the newest methods/technology and laser machines he's working with. I even opted for the Contoura treatment that allows an even more precise treatment of the cornea and therefore more precise vision. So worth the money! I was at 20/650 vision, but now I'm at 20/15!!! Truly a lifetime investment! Dr. Tooma is really kind and caring too. He makes time for you and answers all your questions, not rushing out of the room. And Apollo is awesome too! This review pertains to the Nvision newport beach facility. I waited until after my 6 months follow up to write the review to make sure my vision is stable. I had lasik with the contour option (an additional $500 as the staffs and the optometrist said it yields better results) bringing the total to $5500. The low rating is for the result, as the left eye was under corrected by 0.5 diopter causing my initial blurry vision. The right works perfectly and daytime vision is crisp. I'm getting use to the bluriness due to the under corrected eye and it is bothering me much less now. However, if I focus with my left eye, the blurriness is still there. On my final follow up, the optometrist recommended against further touch up and he thought I will benefit from the under correction in 5 to 10 years when middle age hits and reading glass is needed. Night vision glare is an issue with both eyes and has not improved. In terms of dry eyes, it was an issue early on within the first 3 months but not an issue now. During the postop 1 week visit, the optometrist found a small hazy gap/cavity in my left cornea created when they made the flap. She had two other colleagues look at it but not the surgeon himself. They said it was improving in subsequent visits and that it was not affecting my vision. I made the choice to come to this facility with all the great reviews and recommendations from coworkers and I don't mind paying the extra premium price if the results are justified. In my case, the results did not justify the premium price, especially the contour option their staff were touting. The 15 mins procedure was done by Dr. Toomi but the initial screening and postop visits were with their optometrists (the day after, 1 week, 1 mo, 3 mo, and 6mo). On two occasions the wait time was 30 and 45 minutes after the medical assistant already did their measurements and seated me in a room. On other visits, the wait time averaged 15 mins. The front office staffs were great as should be expected from such an establishment. I definitely think the care could be improved if the postup visits were with one specific optometrist for continuity. Knowing what I know now, I would not have gone through with lasik and I would not have pay the extra premium price for this facility. read more
