1 Star (only because zero isn't an option) This place is a total disaster from start to finish. First off, there's no actual service -- it's seat-yourself and order-on-your-own, which would be fine if anything about the process made sense. The ordering system is clunky, slow, and somehow still confusing. It felt like they went out of their way to make the experience as frustrating as possible. Now, the food... absolutely disgusting. I'm not sure what I ate, but it tasted like someone gave up halfway through cooking and just said, "Eh, good enough." Everything was either cold, soggy, burnt, or bland -- and sometimes all four at once. The fries were limp and greasy, like they'd been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. I wouldn't feed this stuff to a raccoon. I left annoyed, hungry, and honestly kind of grossed out. The best part of the meal was throwing it in the trash. I grew up in Santa Cruz coming to the Boardwalk Bowl all the time for birthday parties!! Of course, I never went to Coasters because I was underage then, but I've recently discovered it as an adult and it's a great place. Fast service and kind staff. My friends like it a lot for karaoke which I still haven't tried, but want to soon. On a recent visit, I ordered a double "gin-gin" (Ginger beer and Hendricks gin) and this was $15, which I thought was not a bad value for what you get. A bunch of my friends and I headed down to the Santa Cruz boardwalk for a friend's birthday. We ended up at Coasters to watch a Warriors game - I was not prepared for what followed. The bar began karaoke during the Warriors game. It started out slowly at first, but within an hour it was the most fun karaoke outing I have ever had. The entire crowd was into every song. It was a mix of all ages and all types of people. It is the most fun I've had on a night out in years! I cannot recommend it enough. That said: keep your act together. So let's be clear. The food is 3 stars at best, but the Karaoke is AMAZING. I noticed in a lot of the old one star reviews they said that the person who ran the karaoke was really rude - I'm certain that this employee has now moved on. The current KJ is great. What makes the karaoke so amazing is that there is such a great variety of people and talents there and everyone supports everyone. No need to feel embarrassed. Go for it! The crowd will be with you. And, despite it being in the Bar, under 21 is allowed until 9pm. I just took my 6 year old and she LOVED it. She did two songs and the crowd was great to her and she was so pumped. But truly a great show all around and an amazing way to see a real slice of Santa Cruz life. Food: The curly fries are quite good. The fries with nacho cheese are exactly that - and sometimes that's just what you need. The pizza is mediocre at best - but my kids ate it, so really no complaints there. Asked for a shot and a beer back and Latina working the bar said she couldn't do that just one drink at a time. Ok... Cool...I was the only one at the bar for hours (4 beers and a shot over 4 hrs just chilling watching the cowboys and 49ers game)...white group comes in orders 3 beer 3 shots and she serves them. When i asked why I couldn't get a beer and a shot and they could Bartender said it was different and that she'd call security... sometimes it's your own people...f%^& her and f%$# this place. This is a fun spot right across from the boardwalk in Santa Cruz. They're connected to the bowling alley adding some adult entertainment options for the parents who don't bowl or like to bowl with their buzz on! They also serve food to the bowlers in case they get hungry. I've been coming here off and on over the years and it usually involves some karaoke with some friends. Up till 9pm they do cater to kids accompanied by their parents so you get a lot of kids singing. Once 9pm rolls around they quickly kick the kids out and it becomes more of a "bar" and now the adults get to sing as well. Although the bar is very strict on portions (they have an electronic metering system for the pours) the prices are pretty reasonable considering the location. Beer is always a safe bet as you can't cheat 16oz's and they have a pretty good selection of local draft beers. The food is not that good so I would would eat before you get here but if you want it all in one place you can get it here. Last comment is the quality of the karaoke music is bad. The lyrics often are incorrect and the timing to the music makes most people choke. If you need to read the lyrics as you sing don't follow the highlight prompts. It's feels like the lyrics were translated in China... Karaoke is usually pretty hard to stomach but the poor quality content means only people with real talent sound good, nobody else stands a chance. read more

Went in this past Thursday for a quick drink, was not having a great day and was in the area for work so I decided to stop by. Your typical bar, nothing to fancy. Food was not great, had the tenders and fries but didn't expect much since it is "bar food". If it weren't for the service I would have gave this place a 1 star. The bartender is was made up the stars, I believe her name was Cindy. She was super attentive and nice. I told her to make me something special and ended giving me a "Cindy special" which was a drink that had guava which is now my new favorite drink. I really wish I could give 0 stars because this place doesn't deserve one. I have never been racially discriminated against so outright. Went in for a drink and Cindy asked for our ID with an attitude which honestly I didn't even care about but then she said she needed to verify they were real which is weird considering I've never had trouble anywhere else but I still just said okay. 10mins later she comes back and says I have to wait for security to come verify your IDs. At this point we have waited for longer than we should have with her just holding our IDs hostage , she didn't want to give the IDs back but we asked for them back and said we would just go to the arcade bar because we were tired of this. Once we got to the arcade, I was purchasing white claws after the cashier verified our ID as REAL but before the purchase was over (within 3mins) a security guard came up to us and said they had to check our IDs. That was fine because we understood it could have seemed like we were trying to avoid the ID check; we gave them to him and he verified they were REAL once again. However, he told us that we would have to leave the premises because the bartender Cindy said we made her uncomfortable and our attitudes weren't acceptable for the environment of the park. This is what really pissed me off because we literally had not said anything to Cindy other than "ok" and "we are tired of waiting, we will just go to the arcade bar." There was no attitude and never any disrespect towards her at all. I try to be respectful at all times when it comes to those in the service industry (even when I'm not happy with the service) because I am in the service industry as well so the fact that she lied like that really blew my mind. On top of this, they had 3 security officers follow us from the arcade all the way to our car which was blocks away as if we posed a threat. That was the most disrespectful thing to me. We are two petite women, even when they told us we had to leave, we kept it polite so the fact that you tried to paint us as these angry black women who were rude just really just shows me that it's not about how we acted but rather Cindy discriminating against us and lying so that we would get kicked out. She should be fired though I doubt that will happen. I highly recommend not going here. This was truly the worst experience. read more

Normally don't write reviews but this place was a bummer. There's just no customer service here at all. I came in ready to sit and order in rounds as I planned on being there a while. I ordered a drink and appetizer and planned on ordering more but a server never came to check on me. Only time they did was to literally toss me my bill across the table. I ordered an appetizer so it sucks they just assumed I was done as I literally came there to have lunch, drinks and get some work done on the patio. Food was ok, and it's right by the boardwalk so I'm sure business isn't an issue. Just sucks that they know that and won't employ servers with some customer service skills beyond saying, "Yeah" when I thank them. Just had the worst experience at this bar on Sunday night. The bartender Nicole refused to serve my two friends and I a second shot because she said we "looked too buzzed." At this point we had only had a shot and a modelo. We decided to walk away from the bar and then later found out that she had been serving our other friends (who were male) three or four shots/drinks at the time without question. We talked to the manager about her behavior and he was very accommodating, but we hope to never be served by this bartender again. Walked in and had to wait at least 15 mins to order a drink while the female bartender was sitting at a table eating food. My two friends went ahead of me and ordered drinks with no problem but when it came to me she gave me a nasty look and with attitude told me she had to scan my ID. Came back and told me my ID wouldn't scan which is funny since it's a real ID and I've never had any problem with it scanning. She held on to my ID and told me she was going to call security. She then goes to the back for 20 mins with my ID while she had her coworkers come out and stare me down. Security finally comes and confirms it's a real ID in less than 10 seconds. I understand she's doing her job but it seems like she was just on a power trip since she only scanned mine out of my friends. It was nice and cool on the frigging 90+ Monday so there's that. No one approached us for seating and it was not obvious how we were supposed to ask to order food. I approached the bar and the bartender said to order next door and they will bring it over. We went in the bowling alley and placed our order with B.B's (?) And waited for our food in Coasters. While waiting, the same bartender brought a menu for the table next to us that read "Coasters" soooo confused. The food arrived in a timely manner. They appearantly did not hear me order my chicken sandwich with tots and brought the chicken sandwich with fries each entree was about $9 the burger was ok.. my honey mustard chicken sandwich was reasonable. I was a bit miffed about the tots, but the mr. Offered to swap half of his with me. In the end the food was meh-ok.. it was confusing to place an order.. First of all, the kids need to go. My wife and I visited on a Saturday for Karaoke. We arrived shortly before six. The bar was relatively quiet, with a handful of people watching basketball. Danielle, the bartender greeted us very warmly. Danielle is phenomenal, with a smile the lasts for days. By 7:00 the place was inundated with kids - little hoodlums who have no intention of spending any money. So one might ask, "why on earth are they here?" I'm not sure.
