A liquor store this size is rare in DC, and Lions does not disappoint. They have a full selection of beer, wine, and liquor - as well as those important side items you always forget, like a mixer. If you're buying in bulk or just looking for variety, this is a great option that doesn't involve driving out to the burbs. As far as their wine selection goes, I didn't see as many Italian wines as have caught my eye at smaller but more focused liquor/wine stores, but they probably did have a greater variety if wines (I'm just stuck on Italian wines or nothin'). No parking lot, so if you drove you'll have to contend with finding a space on busy Georgia Ave. Probably best just to have a walk up or take transit, but ya know, you do you. read more

If you'd been to Lion's before the renovation, you'll understand what a welcome change this is for the block below the Georgia Ave-Petworth Metro. Shiny like a penny, Lion's is attempting to go upscale but doesn't yet have the selection that will make them a competitor to Calvert-Woodley or Schneider's. That said, the staff are very friendly and seem genuinely interested in finding out what their customers want in a neighborhood liquor store. So...on to the details. The wine selection, sad to say, is nothing to scream about. Mostly these are the same brands you'll find in any of the larger liquor stores around town, at least the ones that don't specialize in wine. But giving Lion's the benefit of the doubt, they've got plenty of floor space. So hopefully we'll see an expanded wine selection soon. The beer selection is, to say the least, eclectic. A whole bunch of brewers I've never heard of with prices that are a little on the high side--neither of which bother me...really, as I'm always up for trying new beers, especially if I don't have to drive to purchase them. My only real complaint here is that Lion's keeps pretty much all the beer cold, and frankly that's just a waste of electricity. Keep the Bud cold for the weekend tailgaters, but for the rest of us...it's OK to stock more brands in fewer fridges. We can manage the chilling of the beer ourselves. The quality of the spirits varies by type. Are you a Vodka drinker? Well then Lion's does pretty well. Unfortunately if you prefer Gin, you're going to probably need to keep searching, that is, unless Bombay is good enough. Unlike with the beer, the prices for the spirits are very competitive. Close to the best I've seen in DC. All in all, Lion's did a great job on the renovation. They've got a lot of space to fill, they just need to fill it--hopefully with a whole lot of interesting libations. read more

Solid place to wager on the Race2Riches horses of the D.C. Lottery. The store also has a good selection of liquor and beer. From nips to handles, you will likely find what you need. I just wish the store opened earlier, but I understand the employees work long hours and need some down time. I know I do. The store has a growler station. I asked if instead of using a growler, I could just put my mouth under the nozzle and guzzle the craft beer. The employee told me the growler station wasn't working that day. Someone forgot to tell the owner of Lions Liquor what a Georgia Ave. liquor store is supposed to look like. Where's the fridge full of cheap domestics? Why are there more bottles of wine than wine coolers? Where is the bullet-proof glass protecting the clerks and hard liquor from riff-raff like us? This place breaks all the rules. The first thing that you notice about the space is the large, open floor plan. There are wine aisles, a growler station, and an awesome refrigerated section full of constantly changing craft beer. The place is always clean and bright, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I would appreciate more hard liquor offerings, especially whiskey; they generally have the stand-bys, but don't expect to see any unique or hard-to-find selections. Despite this limitation, you're not gonna find a nicer liquor store this far north in DC. read more

Showed up here randomly the other night after my girlfriend told me the liquor store that they've been working on for months looked like it was open. Turns out they weren't quite open; their doors were open and they would sell me booze, but their floor was only half stocked and kind of unorganized. While I was wandering around inside the owner came up and introduced himself and said they weren't really open, they were going to have a soft open later in the day and a grand opening sometime later, but I could feel free to look around and buy whatever they had out at the time. I had wanted to get a Spanish sherry, Amontillado or Oloroso, for a punch I wanted to make for a party (Captain Russell's Punch, its the best) and some other assorted liquor. Even in their half-stocked state they had three varieties of amontillado to pick from, and their liquor prices were excellent. The inside is clean and classy. The owner is awesome. As he stated, they plan on specializing in "bourbon, single-malt scotch, and craft beer." My kind of place. read more

On the one hand it's nice to this place does not have plexiglass dividers, on the other hand it's extremely annoying that their liquor is behind the counter. Their prices aren't very good and the service isn't particularly welcoming. If you need booze in a hurry try this place, but if you're looking for a good shopping experience, look elsewhere. read more

What a gem, what a pearl. Beyond rubies is our little.... local liquor store. My first impression was a startled response to its cavernous size. This place is spacious! Lion strikes a good balance between keeping a lot of product while preventing their aisles from feeling claustrophobic. They have a solid beer selection, which they do pretty well to rotate. Their prices on cheap beer are completely reasonable, and while they don't have elite prices on the nicest beer, they don't gouge either. Keep an eye out on the occasional sale to get rid of seasonal beer, because you can strike some amazing bargains (like $5 for 6-packs of winter beer). Lion also boasts a pretty extensive liquor selection, and the staff have provided on-the-money recommendations. I haven't noticed particularly high nor particularly low prices on their liquor. The staff is exceptional. Courteous, friendly, helpful, everything I could hope for. I try to make it a point to get on good terms with the staff of whatever liquor/beer stores I frequent, and there's a big staff at Lion, so it took a bit of time. It is worth it though. From casual everyday purchases, to supplying for a party, to bulk supply-and-delivery for a big event, Lion has met all of my alcohol needs. When I recently considered moving out of Petworth, I was sad to think I'd be leaving Lion behind. read more

Lion's liquors is the prettiest liquor store I've ever been in. Not only is it recently (as in JUST OPENED) renovated, they spared NO expense cleaning the space up. The contents? Blow your mind good. You could spend hours in here perusing the aisles. They have everything from malt liquor up to the most expensive liquors you can think of. While I am a beer drinker, and was completely satisfied with their numerous craft offerings, I've been venturing into the world of wine, and appreciated the rows and rows upon different whites and reds from every corner of the Earth. I love that our corner of DC is stepping up its game with retailers such as Lion's liquors. Further, everyone working there, including the owners, are incredibly nice and very helpful. I've found my new liquor store. I hope they'll offer tastings! Bottom line: Georgia Avenue, embrace Lion's. It has everything you need, well, liquor-wise. read more

Nice place but parking can be difficult. Nice selection of red wines and craft beers. Had to knock my stars down from 4 to 3 because I went because they had a red wine I was looking for and they had a growler fill station. When I arrived at the location the growler fill station was down and the person working and I had to pry information about it from the person working at the cash register. He could only tell me that it might be working by the summer time. read more

If there is one thing I hate, it's when vendors don't honor their prices. Went in on July 2nd to grab a few bottles for a party. Low a behold I see a bottle of "Deep Eddy Lemonade" marked for $9.99! Of course I'm going to buy it because it usually retails for approximately $26. The kicker is the cashier wouldn't sell it to us. His excuse was it was mismarked. Mmm that's not my fault, you're supposed to sell it at the marked price. The manager comes over and refuses to sell me the $9.99 bottle. Pretty decent liquor store if I must say! If you can find some parking it's definitely worth a visit! I actually was eating at a place around the area and just so happened to need a bottle of something before I headed back to my hotel! I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted but looking from the outside in it looked as if there was a huge selection! Sake was on my mind but after I got inside to only see they offer maybe all but 3 different brands I immediately had a change of heart! I went for the margaritas.. with plenty of different brands and sizes, I ended up with the 1800 traditional! Pre-mixed and already ready to pour! The price was a tad bit higher than what I was normally use to paying back home in Las Vegas but I was on vacation so whatev's! What caught my attention though was this umm "bag fee" of $0.05 lol like really? Never seen anything like that but the cashier explained to me that it's a fee that all liquor stores have to charge in Washington DC.. interesting! He stated it must go to like help clean up the Potomac River or something? Puzzled as I was I grabbed my Margarita and 5 cent bag and went about my business! read more

I love Lions. I come here at least several times per week, and I've recommended this store to at least a dozen friends who stop by Petworth. There are a couple things that make this place awesome: - Alicia, the beautiful owner, often works at the register and is one of the sweetest people around. She's got wine recommendations readily available, and she always has kind words for me and mine. - Ryan, the beer guy, is friendly, helpful, and generous with his beer and his beer knowledge. He's seems pretty excited about the upcoming growler station, so be sure to come back and check it out! - The beer. This shop is somewhat of a crowd pleaser in that the average party host can find cases of college faves like Bud, but the more sophisticated brew guzzler can also find boxed bottles of Firestone Walker's DDBA, Parabola, and special Dogfish head bottles. Pricing can also be pretty great as I've been able to find bottles of Allagash curieux at a surprisingly great discount. While wine takes up a good 2/3 of the shop's well-lit floor space, I love heading to the back to check out discounted beers and new arrivals. I'm not much of an expert on liquor, but the liquor wall behind the cash register looks pretty impressive and extensive. There are occasionally promoters hanging out in the front letting folks try random things like Tennessee honey whiskey or cordials. There's going to be a growler station soon as well, which is of course pretty darn thrilling as I live across the street. And while I'm hoping this neighborhood gem stays relatively hidden, I'm also so consistently impressed by the selection and service that it seems silly to keep this secret to myself! Beautifully renovated space, friendly and enthustiastic owners, excellent prices! I stumbled upon Lions Liquor in Petworth one evening, and was truly impressed. The store is airy with warm lighting and invites browsing along the different shelves and displays, and they have wines available for tasting. The owners and staff were truly friendly and interested in feedback on how to better serve their customers (though it seems like they are doing it right!!!). If they don't have a wine or liquor that you are looking for, make sure to mention it because the owner will make a note of it. Also, the prices here are excellent, much better than most places I've seen in DC! Anyhoo, I ended up leaving with a bottle of wine and a bottle of vodka...I foresee this being one of those "go-to" places that I can't walk by without stopping in to chat with the staff and pick up a bottle. Great space, especially for the neighborhood. Good selection but be sure to check the born on dates, have gotten old beer a few times. The reason for 2 stars is that on two occasions they have double charged my credit card for a single transaction. In each case I had to go back in with my credit card statement and wait around for 20-30 minutes while they called their credit card processor. Very unprofessional for an establishment that presents themselves as top of the line to face these basic issues. There is no excuse for erroneously charging your customers. Having it happen to me twice makes me think it happens to many others as well. read more

Another great place classin up Georgia Ave. Well lit, and just gorgeously designed and clean. The prices seemed on par with what I've seen elsewhere, so it's definitely great to support the local businesses. I have heard (and it's described in a few spots) about needing to check the beer. Also, one guy at the counter kinda leered at me and called me sweetie. It's a personal pet peeve of mine, if you don't know me, don't call me honey, sweetie, darling, whatever. I'm a beer drinker and the selection here is pretty huge. But that's not a good thing if they can't keep the product moving. I walked out with a $13 six pack of IPA before checking the bottled on date. I got home and sure enough it was at 120 days, which is the "best by date" for IPAs. Why wasn't this on sale at least? Wouldn't be surprised if most of the beer in there is not fresh. read more

Dope beer spot right in the neighborhood. Lots of options and relatively reasonably priced. But I'm giving 8/10 because they don't seem too knowledgeable about the freshness of their beers (or seem to care much). They just care about expiration dates, which doesn't really mean much in the craft beer world. I usually get my wine from Trader Joe's (oh yes, I can come out of the closet as a 2-buck-chuck-drinker, no lover!) and beer from the Giant down the street and certainly will not be writing reviews about either of those places... but now come to think of it... (-: Let's get back to the topic at hand... Lion's Liquor. It's just South of the Petworth Metro next to the public charter school (which has a strip club on the other side... hmmm) They just renovated and reopened. This is one huuuuge liquor store with a good wine and beer selection and good prices. Behind the counter they also have a good liquor selection. You may say that there are so many liquor stores in the neck of the woods who needs another one... This one is definitely different and I am going to come here now instead. Absolutely stunning. Seriously. This liquor store is about as good as it gets. Great selection of liqour and outstanding wine selection. I was impressed with how clean the place was compared to the other unkempt liquor shops throughout the District. Prices are average, but the place is really amazing. I wish the liquor was available on the floor, but perhaps it's to prevent shoplifting. But the staff was super friendly and helpful. Lion's is definitely a gem on Georgia. read more

until today, i'd had excellent experiences with customer service at lion liquor. don't recall seeing this cashier/customer service rep before so perhaps he is the exception to my experiential rule. i've had cards not scan properly here before. in each of those instances the staff person went above and beyond to fix it...even restarting the pos system. in each case the sale ended up going thru on the card. thanks to the staff effort. today, not at all. today, "it's your card" not our problem. now it is your problem. service fail. i'd critique directly if such a link existed. read more
