I have always brought my car to get it serviced at Cobra Auto Repair. About a year ago, there was an issue with my Mercedes E320 that Mike was unable to diagnose because his computer was unable to read it, so he asked that I take it to another place to get it done. After a $2000 bill from the other auto repair place, they recommended that I fixed all the other things that were wrong ($4500 worth) after they did a full diagnostic test on it. They said my engine was leaking oil and gaskets had to be replace along with a slew of other things. Needless to say, I did not have it done. I took my car home and for a year, it leaked oil. When it was time to get my car serviced again, Mike said that some of the screws were loose and he tightened it, changed the oil and my car was good as new. He is the most honest mechanic there is. I was nervous about finding a new mechanic and my car was due for an oil change. I called my old one to compare costs, which was $30 more than what Cobra would've charged me. Upon arriving there was no wait, and when they opened the car hood they immediately spotted a coolant liquid had leaked. He pointed it out to me, and asked if my car was new-ish so that I could take it to the dealership if it's going to be covered under warranty. He told me to he didn't want to mess with it and have the dealership avoid blame. I was so grateful for their honesty. 2 hrs later and my car dealership confirmed it was a defective water pump, so they replaced it free of charge. Cobra saved me $800, which they could've tried to deceive me and not mention the warranty. I brought my car back to them to do the oil service. It was taken care of, and they were super friendly! I feel like they were my trustworthy relative who is looking out for me and the cost of the service was super affordable! Not sure why practically almost all mechanics on Yelp suspiciously have all close to 5 stars. I really had a tough time with these guys. Maybe because of Covid-19 affecting businesses but they were just unprofessional and didn't have that "uncle" or any friendly vibe. 1. I got a Check Engine Light and needed a Oil Change. Instead of going to Walmart or Jiffy Lube, I decided to give a local a try as a support amid Covid-19. Cobra Auto Repair was one of three I looked up. 2. Usually, i just go to mechanics but decided to call make an appointment since Covid-19. I asked to come next day at 9 AM for Oil Change and Check Engine Light on, and the person accepts. However, when i arrived the following day, he says he's booked all day and I re-schedule for available day (which was 2 days after) at the same time... 3. Next day, I go and see the guy (long hair old man). As soon as I saw the guy's face expression, i knew the service wasn't gonna be provided. He said he's busy all day Again! 4. It occurred on 8/3 today again. Fortunately, I knew it was gonna happen again so i made an appointment with another mechanic. Don't make a mistake by just simply reading reviews. If you don't believe me, try calling their number and just hear their voice/tone to feel their business's standard. PS. 1. I didn't haggle or even try. No discussion involving money was mentioned. 2. For Oil Change, no i didn't or intend to bring my own oil. As i mentioned, the purpose was to support local business. 3. For those who's been to the shop, repair and replacement cost are relatively and slightly cheaper because it's used from junkyard or refurbished from MPA or etc that will require another change within a year or two. I've been going to Cobra for years. Mike is an honest mechanic that can fix anything related to cars. He's maintained my 2001 Toyota Solara for the past ten years...he even replaced the engine. My passenger side window was stuck so I went to Mike. Mike replaced the switches on both doors and the regulator and motor for my passenger window. It's a small and unassuming shop with a side entrance off the street. Although they specialize in collision repair, they do small jobs too like oil changes and brake pad replacements etc. Very reasonable prices and turnaround time. The success of Yelp depends on its product, which is to form a collection of opinions of places which you are not familiar with, and I'm reminded how much I like Yelp because of the places it lets you find. I don't know how else you can come up a random auto repair shop like this one, but in a street or neighborhoods with different options, this looks just like another so you just have to take your chances and that's the idea with which I visited Cobra, hoping I could find a mechanic I could lend some mutual trust to with an honesty and openness that should be adult and fair, with a friendly understanding of the business, which if required will be given. First of all, I went there because the quote was reasonable. Mike on the phone answered my questions and I said I'd show up so I did. When I got there, he had the time to look at my car and begin to see what was wrong. I went in asking for a wheel bearing replacement on my driver's side wheel, so he just made sure to check that the wheel would make noise when it was lifted and spun. It did, so he got to work at his own pace, getting one tool here another there and all the time we were able to talk which I enjoyed, since I got to know him. It turned out that I just hung around and saw him work for the first part of the job where he took the wheel bearing inside to get replaced. Then he went in and he begin getting busy in that time so he took some time in there. And all along cars kept coming, and not just cars that show up and drive up to ask for a price, but people who parked and had their keys at the ready to just tell him what the problem was and possibly have him check it out or leave it for later, apparently knowing that he will look at it and give you a call. So he would come up and talk to them about the problem and a couple of people decided to wait and in the middle of it he fixed my wheel. We took a ride to check it out and he helped me out with further tips. There are also a number of other mechanics in the shop who seem to be working on more long-term projects but still seem active in the general activity, I can't say how much I would like to believe and trust in a good mechanic. My dad found Cobra through yelp and we decided to check it out since it was down the street and the quote for my car was amazing ($100 for front brake replacement on my honda!!) I happen to find out about this place when I was buying a car from someone and they wanted to get the car inspected here since it was the seller's regular mechanic. I ended up buying the car and got my other car fixed at the same time! Mike is very professional and honest. His prices were so reasonable, especially for only using Toyota's parts. He was so fast at diagnosing my car problems while other mechanics I've dealt with in the past gave me the run around and said they had to do a smoke test and more testing to even know where the oil was leaking from. Mike literally looked down under my car and saw the viscosity of the oil and knew right away that it was coming from the axel! Wow, I was blown away. My car was back to tip top shape after Mike was done. I am so grateful I found this shop!! I do have to point out that the shop is dirty and covered with old oily car parts. Mike is great. He remembers his customers and takes care of them quickly. He doesn't charge those pesky $75 fees to check you check engine light and will always give you the most practical recommendation. He will also look for the best solution given the situation. One example is that I brought in my in-laws Geo that had a gas tank leak. Their mechanic said $1200 to get a replacement tank plus an additional cost for install. Mike said that he could get the tank from a junk yard for $75 and then $200 for install. The car was worth practically nothing other than the significant savings in gas. He also said that the A/C would cost way too much to fix and removed it while completing the gas tank install. Mike is a great guy, will not take advantage of you, and is seriously knowledgeable with automobiles. There have been times when I've gotten an oil change somewhere else and the mechanic will tell me that I need certain things done or it will be detrimental to my engine and I tell them to write it up and I will have my mechanic look at it. The actual price he charged me was **below** the price he quoted because he ended up not needing a part that he thought he might. Who does that? How rad is that? Not only has he always provided me with high quality after market products (which cost me less), but always gives me the option to go with factory parts as well. Here are a few reasons why I'll never leave Mike: 1 - The quality and reliability of his work is amazing and top-notch. 2 - He has, on occasion, installed superfluous parts for me that my husband couldn't install at home. Super nice! 3 - He pointed out that my recent oil change at Valvoline was not done well and that after only 1,500 miles, my oil was already ready to be changed. After my service with Mike, I went straight to Valvoline and watched them redo my oil change and made sure they actually changed it out. Without Mike, I would likely have continued to go to Valvoline for years. Now I'll make the trek to Mike instead. 4 - When parts need to be replaced, he'll tell me the truth about how much longer I can actually go before replacing the part without sacrificing safety. He could have swapped out my timing belt at my 90,000 mile tune up but gave me the option to wait another 10,000 miles. 5 - His final costs are often lower than his estimate. Awesome! 6 - He offers me quality after market options if I don't want to pay for factory parts. 7 - He installed our trailer hitch as a favor. Super cool. 8 - He's always courteous and friendly.
