Buildcal Landscape and Shawgrass turf changed my life! I've doubled my living space and entertaining area. We don't wear shoes in our home, and now, with the wonderful turf and concrete, our yard is SO CLEAN that we can be barefoot inside and out! No more stopping to put shoes on and take them off at the doors; no dirt dragged into the house - it's heaven! I met Olivier a couple years ago when he came to give me a quote for Duraturf artificial grass. He gave me valuable feedback and helped me realize that I was only in the beginning planning phase of my project. He suggested I think about more detailed plans for my yard so that I don't waste money installing something for a short term and have the added cost of redoing it later. I really appreciate that he wasn't a high-pressure salesperson. The product that I ended up choosing is the Shawgrass Coastal collection. It looks FANTASTIC - like grass, but better! It has great color and shine like live grass. It's made in America, kid safe, made with no lead. I love that it's low maintenance and saves water and I don't have to use pesticides. PLUS it has a 15-year warranty. I figure if I have to replace it in 15 years, I will have gotten my money's worth by then! The sand-type filling at the base between the blades of turf is called Hydrochill. It's pet friendly, FDA-approved, and it keeps the turf cool. I think it works by trapping moisture at night and releasing it during the day via evaporation to keep it cool. Does it get hot? Well, yes, but only in very peak times when it's 100 degrees out and the sun has been beating down on it for a couple hours straight. And even then it's no worse than walking barefoot on hot sand or concrete (I know this because I've hopped back and forth from my concrete to turf during one really peak time, and they were equally hot.) If I water the turf, the Hydrochill does its magic and all is fine. But I've only had one day in the last 2 months (June and July in Culver City) that watering it was necessary. Olivier and Arin manage a great crew. They're always on time, work hard, are respectful, and clean up after themselves. They were great in accommodating me by working sometimes with my back gate closed so my small dog could have access to the yard while they worked. Their craftmanship is good. I can't see any seams or any problems in my turf and it's already held up to lots of kids playing on it and driving a little electric kids car on it. Another awesome benefit - for me - is that when they put in turf, they put in drainage! And I happen to be a mom whose retail therapy involved buying my kids an inflatable water slide. I also have a bounce house. And when I had grass, it was a huge pain to have to pick up the inflatable toys and move them so that the grass didn't die underneath; or so that bugs from the grass wouldn't get into it; or for the gardener to come every week. And it was always annoying and gross having grass clippings, etc. Plus there was the time the bounce house was accidentally hit by a weedwacker and needed a repair. Just a little added value :) I'd like to emphasize one more time that I love how CLEAN turf is! And I love that I don't have loud lawnmowers and other machinery in my yard every week making a racket and waking my kids or disturbing my work. We chose BuildCal Turf after reviewing multiple quotes. Olivier was the most thorough and pointed out items such as gopher holes and how to address existing plants we had in our yard. His quote came in a timely manner and was also detailed with each line item broken out so we could easily determine what we wanted to include within our budget. We ended up installing a dog run (better drainage and shorter blades), as well as normal length "grass", all with organic infill. The installation was scheduled and completed as promised with updates of potential delays due to weather. The entire job took 2 days and the work site was left completely clean at the end of each day, including when the crew knew they were returning the very next day. While BuildCal Turf may seem like a newer company, the owner and many of the employees have been in the business for a long time. I discovered this quite by accident as I had gotten a bid from a fellow named Olivier working for DuraTurf back in 2017. Things came up in my life and I had to delay the project until this summer. I immediately contacted DuraTurf only to discover they had gone out of business. I got a couple of bids from other 5 star yelp reviewed companies, but neither had the price or quality I'd gotten from Olivier at DuraTurf. Part of the higher price estimate was due to padding the square footage which Olivier did not do. Since I had his full name from the initial quote, I googled him to discover that he had started up a new company called BuildCal Turf right around the time DuraTurf folded. I called them up and Olivier came out the next morning and took measurements again (still lower square footage than the others). He also recommended and based his estimate on the Shawgrass Luxury Burmuda 86 oz. turf which was in my opinion more natural looking than the others had. He emailed me an estimate which I immediately approved and signed. While he was at the house Olivier explained to me what had happened at DuraTurf. Apparently the guy that owned it died at a young age, leaving a young daughter. Very sad. The whole business was liquidated and the proceeds went towards the daughter's care. Lots of good employees were left without a job, so Olivier decided to start up his own company to keep them employed. One gets the impression that Olivier really cares about both his workers and his customers as he truly listens and quickly responds to emails. The morning before they were to start the install, Olivier emailed me to let me know that his crew were going to come out that afternoon to do some prep work. They were all very polite and neatly dressed. Carlos wanted to know about my sprinkler system so we discussed that. They capped off my sprinklers and prepped the whole area and Carlos told me they'd be back the next day. There were many workers coming and going at different times during the day, but the basic crew that remained were former DuraTurf employees, Domingo, Luis, and Jesus. Apparently Carlos had also worked for them. I knew about Domingo from DuraTurf yelp reviews as he was the person they often used to do the detailed work around the tree roots, and I was really glad he was the one to also work on my tree roots. He did a great job, check out my photos. The team was friendly, professional, and detail oriented. They seemed to enjoy their work and take pride in their craftsmanship. And they worked like clockwork - very well coordinated for the many tasks involved in the whole process. When it came time to clean up they left the whole yard spotless, even the surrounding areas they hadn't worked on. If you need artificial turf and have found BuildCal Turf you are already 50 percent lucky. If you get an estimate from Olivier you are 75 percent lucky (plus you might be surprised to find out your actual square footage). And if you hire this team to install your turf, you are 100 percent lucky! I guarantee you will be delighted with your new turf and I recommend Olivier and his crew without reservation. We decided we wanted to put turf in our small side/back yard of our home in Hermosa Beach. Our yard was a mess! It was mostly dirt as well as a 6x8 slab of concrete from where a jacuzzi use to sit. I contacted Olivier at BuildCal-Turf and he came to my house within a couple of days to look at the job.
